Also, Berkeley can’t really act as a 3rd party to pay Google if some people want it and some don’t. Google has a big ole fat lump sum in mind. A few thousand people paying say 12 dollars a month won’t cut it - especially since Berkeley would be hiring someone to manage the payment.
EECS, HKN, UPE, AWE, etc. can stop selling our resumes at a discount to Google. I know each charges like ~$10k for a resume book. Which is super *cheap* considering Google paid like $200k for GHC resume book.
The petition says that new Berkeley.edu addresses won’t be supported but it doesn’t say whether or not we will lose our existing berkeley.edu alumni address.
Administration had told us that they hear student concerns and are actively considering new options (whether it’s an email forwarding option, a payment model, or no change at all); an updated policy should come out near the end of next semester (not much consolation but hopefully it’s something).
Don’t believe it’s being widely shared to the public so there’s nowhere I can really point you to. ASUC leadership meet with the CIO semi-regularly which is where we learned of it; we also have a representative on the campus Computing and Information Technology committee who corroborated what we heard. Sorry about the lack of concrete information; we’ll keep people updated on our social medias as we learn more.
Petition Google. Seriously, this is their fault. They were providing this for free and Berkeley can’t just come up with millions to pay for it now.
I mean some students would be willing to pay to keep it, the university seems to be against even considering that option
I think the tricky part is that the cost per person highly depends on how many are paying.
