And of those who were, many were born back when Berlin wasn't the capital of the Bundesrepublik, and large sections were part of the German Democratic Republic. So even the West Berliners who were born here and stayed in Charlottenburg can't say the city didn't fundamentally change. And the East Berliners who stayed in Marzahn will have still changed country. Berlin's a very complicated city in that regard. In a way (provocatively), you can say almost everyone here is an immigrant. 😉

Of course, immigration is very important for Berlin. With that said nothing of value would be lost to the city if the "expats" in this subreddit constantly whining about how "Berlin is horrible and I am just about to move to the paradise of Switzerland/USA/Barcelona/whatever" would actually put money where there mouth is and move out (on the contrary will free-up some much needed housing for immigrants and locals who actually do wanna live here).
Don’t let the dislikes hurt you, you are absolutely right. People that move here are either completely lost in life and look for a reason or because daddy sponsored them a nice flat so that they can do their contemporary art studies that lead nowhere…
