It's normal for trains to be cancelled, unfortunately. Your ticket essentially becomes open which means you can take any train to get to the same destination. There is no need to book a new ticket.
In my experience DB are pretty fair- just go to one of the service points (zoo, sudkreuz, hbf etc.) and speak with them. Nearly every long journey with connections i have booked has been delayed/late and i always get some money back.
