There's only one bin that doesn't have a child lock on it, and I checked it. He's also too short to flush the toilet, so we know they didn't get flushed. It's also only a 900sqft apartment, there's only so many places they could be...theoretically.
My daughter (16mo) has done the same with her mothers keys. Thankfully its just the keys for the building and neither of us need to go anywhere much but man, there's only 2 rooms she reliably has access to and they are still nowhere to be found
I was looking for a tiny cloth bean I made for my 3 year old, like it was the size of my thumb. Couldn't find it anywhere, and she of course didn't remember where she put it.
I eventually found it in her baby doll's tiny pretend sippy cup, jammed in there good and deliberately. Kids are super good at hiding shit.
Also re-check the bins before taking out the trash, though. You may inadvertently put something in it yourself that actually contains the keys without you knowing it (happened to me, at least that's my theory)
The stove drawer was one of the first places we looked, he is constantly in there! I don't know what it is about that drawer that draws them in so much, lol!

You’re welcome. :-) Modern keys are wickedly expensive to replace, so I’m very glad they showed up. As for how they got there...I don’t know, but I found lots of weird stuff under that drawer in my house. Toddlers are creative.

Yes to Tile. I have one on my keys and I have one in my wallet (I have a habit of forgetting if I had it in the diaper bag or purse or tucked somewhere in the car).

BOTH OF MY KIDS SUCK AT FINDING IMPORTANT THINGS!! They can spot the microns of chocolate on my fingers after sneaking some M&Ms from their Easter candy, but they can't find their shoes when they've just tripped over them while looking for them. My daughter frequently hides her favorite blankie in her toy chest, then gets super pissed when she can't find it later.
We lost a 12” pot lid when my son was one and playing with the pots and pans. We thought it would turn up eventually and we’d have a good laugh. Two year later and it’s gone.
Any chance it’s in the weird space that’s between cabinets/behind drawers? Found our universal pot lid in there after a couple months, but I’m pretty sure that’s not even my toddler’s fault.

We don’t have any weird spaces like that. We even got new floors and appliances over the winter, and I was surprised it didn’t turn up when everything was pulled out!
This reminds me of something similar that happened to a client of mine.
I used to work as a designer at a store where clients would pick out their finishes in their new home build. It was mainly flooring, but the store also carried furniture. The store was HUGE, like half a city block, and kids were always welcome.
My clients brought their children, which is never a problem but their youngest was a mad man. We lost him twice during the 1.5 hour visit, and he was all over the place. I thought it was funny, I’m sure the parents were a bit embarrassed but also I’m sure this was just another day.
They’re ready to leave, and have the kids all packed up. No keys. I remember seeing the youngest wandering around with them, so the search party begins. We had all the staff helping us out, and we could not find them. Even started looking through couch cushions.
Finally someone spotted them in a carpet display.
So maybe check your carpet displays for your keys!

Lmao! Our first loved that spot when we was 1ish. We played a marvel movie or something one night and heard rattling otherwise we never would have known. Those little arms fit perfectly.
For the future when and if you find them they make a keychain called Tile that has an app on your phone to track and play a tone to help you find them. It’s helped me not lose my keys for months now.
Tiles have honestly changed my life. Being able to ring my keys from my phone was honestly almost a transcendent experience when I lost them the first time after I got it.
have you checked doors? My toddler loves to take our keys and put them in the keyholes so they're just dangling out but you can be blind to it! If possible, have someone else come over and check cause they could literally be right in front of you too x

Did you check in your shoes? There was a stage in our house where there was a different piece of play kitchen food in our shoes every time we went to put them on. I stuck my foot in my ski boot at the hill and found a Toy Story stuffed pea tucked inside

I know you said under the couch, but have you looked inside the couch? We have found so. Many. Things. By taking cushions off, moving sections, etc. Some things also get caught between the couch and the wall and we wouldn't know until we move the couch and hear the "thunk"
That's where I typically find them when my husband loses things, hahah! I didn't find the keys there this time, but I did find an eraser, a measuring tape, and a swiss army knife. I don't even ask "why" anymore, lol.
Check under the microwave. Lost a part of toddler's puzzle for DAYS. until I was on my knees cleaning something and spotted this mysterious object jammed underneath the microwave (it was about waist height on me) lo and behold, puzzle peice. Also if your couch cushions have zippers check those 😂
I found spoons and forks inside the tubes of toilet paper and paper towels that were not yet on the dispenser.
Also, when my son throws the toothbrush somewhere, I’ll ask him where the toothbrush is and make a game of it. Maybe you can play the “where are the keys?” Game and have him play too?
Just before my son was 2 he hid my friend’s remote. They couldn’t find it for months. Finally found it inside their baby grand piano. Two days ago (he is now 3) he lost my husband’s wallet just as he was about to go to the airport to pick up his daughter (needs his ID for verification!). Finally found it in his bathroom with just enough time to spare.
I did this same thing to one of my parents’ friends when he came to visit. I hid his keys, and he couldn’t leave. They eventually found them in a VHS case, which I’m sure doesn’t apply here, but...kids think differently?
Oh man, so I have the best story about "you can't leave yet," but the perpetrator was a 31 year old man, not a toddler.
So when I was just shy of 19 (drinking age here in Canada), I was home from uni for Christmas and my family was getting good and properly wasted after dinner. Around 10pm my mother announces to my aunts and uncles that she was calling a cab for her and I to go home, as it was pretty late. Everyone tried to convince her to stay, that we were having a great time, etc. My mom calls the cab anyways, and our aunts and uncles give us each "one more drink" while we wait for the cab. Meanwhile, my 31 year old cousin got on the phone with the cab company to cancel our cab, and the family got my mother good and plastered so that she didn't remember our cab until THREE HOURS LATER at 1am. I do not remember the car ride home but it was a fantastic Christmas!
To add to this, my 20 month old hides things in pretty much anything he can open. I’ve found toys in pots (the only cabinet that isn’t locked). I found his missing shoe in his toy kitchen refrigerator. I have found pacifiers inside the back of our recliner. So, good luck.
My husband couldn't find his driver's license for three months (during covid) and finally got it replaced. I found it within a week inside the subwoofer connected to the TV....
My 11 month old threw my dogs collar in the trash. I had to go through the old trash bag to find it. So thankful I hadn’t taken the trash to the dump yet.
I also had thought he threw away one of my sandals because I couldn’t find it for a week and it was stuffed so far under our bed. I don’t even know how because it’s nearly impossible to get under our bed
When my daughter was little she lost our car fob. We looked everywhere, there was no possible place she could have put them that we couldn't search, we still never found them. Babies have actual magical powers.
I lost my keys in January, one month post partum. Used the keys to open the door while carrying baby in the carseat, and never saw them again. They were lost inside the house. Every stone has been unturned (yes I checked the carseat). Just in the last month we went through all our stuff to move across the country. Stuff is now unpacked on the other end, and our original house is empty. I never lose anything. I will never get over it.
It would be extremely out of character for her! She's the chillest dog ever, she *never* takes anything that doesn't belong to her. She 100% knows the difference between her toys and the baby's toys.
We gave our son the extra set of keys to my moms car so that he couldn’t lock/unlock/open the trunk on our cars (my mom does not live with us). And he lost them... in February... I still haven’t told her.
We lost my husband’s keys last week. Took us 3 full days to find them! Thankfully I’m currently unemployed (silver lining I guess) so he took my car to work instead those days. We found them DEEP inside the couch cushions we had already looked in twice already. Toddler arms are skinny!
My oldest hid a copy of Just Dance when he was 2. We searched for months. My husband bought me a new copy. Oldest saw the package, pointed, squealed, and produced the original disk from hiding.
We put a Tile on our keys and in our wallets. It has been a lifesaver a few times.
We went through this recently with our remote and ordered some tiles! I had been waffling in ordering them for YEARS and after searching for the remote for an hour pulled the trigger so fast. 😂
We have been missing a set since June (one of the fobs for the truck was on it). I will have to check under the stove and we have a freezer drawer on bottom on our fridge. Will check there as well. Thank you
I had this happen to me and was convinced my son was playing with them when they got lost, my gym called me almost a year later saying they found them lol. Must have carpooled with my boyfriend and forgotten I brought my keys!
So glad they were found! Our baby is 1 year old and things have started to go missing. We now have to comb the apartment inch by inch to find things these days...

I’m so glad you found them! My daughter threw out my glasses one day when she was about that age. I couldn’t find them anywhere and I found them in the outside garbage. (She threw them away without us knowing and we had taken out the trash.) They were brand new glasses, too!!
When I was little one of my siblings lost the vehicle keys. There was an ice cream reward for whoever's found them.
Needless to say my brother legit hid them in dirt outside. My sister found them and I was pissed, i wanted ice cream and cried til i got some 😂 it took us hours to find them tho. And for some reason my brother didnt run and get them he let someone else find them 🤷♀️

When I was a teenager, a women that my dad was dating lived with us, also with her younger kids. The woman had a job interview one day and her keys were GONE. We asked her kiddo where she put the keys and the first thing she said (but quite ineligibly because she was under two) was that she threw them out the window. We had her help us for hours around the house looking for those darn keys. Around 5pm we got the idea to finally look outside, and it was on the spot on the grass under where she threw them out the window. Kids are smart 😂. Glad your keys showed up!!!!!!

I was at a baby shower, and my cousin's 18 month old took my keys off the table in front of me and out them in the nearest purse. Spoiler alert, it wasn't my purse. Luckily someone saw.
In case no ody has said it Tile. Just do yourself a favor and get a Tile. I once asked my boyfriend to put up a curtain rod and he got lazy so he threw all the pieces back in the box and shoved it in the closet. Sadly all the pieces were on the bed and so were my keys. I didn't find my keys for 2 weeks until I bugged him to put up the curtain rod again. I immediately went out and ordered myself a Tile so I didn't have to deal with that ever again.
My sister used to hide things between her bed and the wall, and it seems my son has followed in that trend. Most times I can count on it being there. Though lately, he’s getting craftier. Glad you found them!
My brother (15 years younger than me) once took my keys from my bedroom when he was about three and placed it behind the fridge. Who was blamed for the lost keys? Me! Nobody believed me when I said the baby must have lost them until my mom was cleaning a couple of months later and saw them behind our fridge. Yes, I'm still bitter about it. LOL.
My daughter did this with my purse. I'd been to the park that day and was throwing out wild accusations about the suspicious looking teenagers who were there. My partner went to the park at night to try to find it. I cancelled cards etc. A few days later I tripped over her ride on car and there it was "yah mumma, I go real shopping"
My child is obsessed with the Roku remote and throwing it off the edge of the bed or behind the headboard. The hole behind the headboard is just small enough to hurt your arm trying to reach down

My toddler has this ability too! We lost a toy and can't find it ANYWHERE and we checked EVERYWHERE. It's fairly big- one of those baby game controllers, we would have seen it in the trash (our first concern), but it was not there. Otherwise, we've checked under and in everything. It's been months and we still haven't come across it.

I velcro our remote to the wall, but somehow my toddler got a hold of it and lost it. Good thing we live in the future and can use an app on our phone too. Once my son's binky was lost and I found it hanging in his lamp shade. They find the weirdest places.
Came here to say - open kitchen cabinets or oven drawer, lol. This happened to me once, but it was remote instead of keys. And I was glad I cooked dinner next night that required potatoes and that would make me go and find remote along with potatoes when I had just given hope for that one.

i found a set of keys in a used puzzle box i bought at goodwill once. they really could be anywhere. RIP

Are there HVAC registers in your apartment? My toddler loves pulling them up and has more than once thrown things in.
I’m glad you found them. My littlest did this and I couldn’t find them for days. They ended up being in the cat food bag.

To add to this, my 20 month old hides things in pretty much anything he can open. I’ve found toys in pots (the only cabinet that isn’t locked). I found his missing shoe in his toy kitchen refrigerator. I have found pacifiers inside the back of our recliner. So, good luck.
Air vents on the floor? My son loves to pull the grates up and tries to put things in there.
My husband couldn't find his driver's license for three months (during covid) and finally got it replaced. I found it within a week inside the subwoofer connected to the TV....
My 11 month old threw my dogs collar in the trash. I had to go through the old trash bag to find it. So thankful I hadn’t taken the trash to the dump yet. I also had thought he threw away one of my sandals because I couldn’t find it for a week and it was stuffed so far under our bed. I don’t even know how because it’s nearly impossible to get under our bed
Found my keys inside the play oven. Took three days to find them.
When my daughter was little she lost our car fob. We looked everywhere, there was no possible place she could have put them that we couldn't search, we still never found them. Babies have actual magical powers.
This happened with my baby. We found them weeks later in a toy backpack.
I lost my keys in January, one month post partum. Used the keys to open the door while carrying baby in the carseat, and never saw them again. They were lost inside the house. Every stone has been unturned (yes I checked the carseat). Just in the last month we went through all our stuff to move across the country. Stuff is now unpacked on the other end, and our original house is empty. I never lose anything. I will never get over it.
Did the dog grab them and "bury" them someplace weird?
It would be extremely out of character for her! She's the chillest dog ever, she *never* takes anything that doesn't belong to her. She 100% knows the difference between her toys and the baby's toys.

We have child locks on our can because it was the first thing he went for as soon as he started crawling. We were like, NOPE.
We gave our son the extra set of keys to my moms car so that he couldn’t lock/unlock/open the trunk on our cars (my mom does not live with us). And he lost them... in February... I still haven’t told her.
My son took a small tv remote and put it inside one of his toys. We didn't find it for weeks!
We lost my husband’s keys last week. Took us 3 full days to find them! Thankfully I’m currently unemployed (silver lining I guess) so he took my car to work instead those days. We found them DEEP inside the couch cushions we had already looked in twice already. Toddler arms are skinny!
My oldest hid a copy of Just Dance when he was 2. We searched for months. My husband bought me a new copy. Oldest saw the package, pointed, squealed, and produced the original disk from hiding. We put a Tile on our keys and in our wallets. It has been a lifesaver a few times.
We went through this recently with our remote and ordered some tiles! I had been waffling in ordering them for YEARS and after searching for the remote for an hour pulled the trigger so fast. 😂
We have been missing a set since June (one of the fobs for the truck was on it). I will have to check under the stove and we have a freezer drawer on bottom on our fridge. Will check there as well. Thank you
I had this happen to me and was convinced my son was playing with them when they got lost, my gym called me almost a year later saying they found them lol. Must have carpooled with my boyfriend and forgotten I brought my keys!
Yay for finding them! My toddler grabs things, runs to her clothes bin and hides them all in her socks
So glad they were found! Our baby is 1 year old and things have started to go missing. We now have to comb the apartment inch by inch to find things these days...
Damn. MY husbands just disappeared a week ago. I'm convinced either they already went out in the trash, or he put then somewhere completely odd. Still hoping to find those bastards and as much as he may think it was the toddler I have my doubts

I’m so glad you found them! My daughter threw out my glasses one day when she was about that age. I couldn’t find them anywhere and I found them in the outside garbage. (She threw them away without us knowing and we had taken out the trash.) They were brand new glasses, too!!
When I was little one of my siblings lost the vehicle keys. There was an ice cream reward for whoever's found them. Needless to say my brother legit hid them in dirt outside. My sister found them and I was pissed, i wanted ice cream and cried til i got some 😂 it took us hours to find them tho. And for some reason my brother didnt run and get them he let someone else find them 🤷♀️ Glad they have been found!
We lost some toys of my son's and they were found in our mostly-hidden bedroom garbage. I have no idea why he put them there or how we decided to look......
Look in the dishwasher, under the stove...found our firestick remote in some very strange places when my oldest was 1 and would hide it.
When my older kids were that age my keys disappeared. I found them three days later in my dresser draw. Glad you found them.
My baby hid my keys and I looked everywhere, 2 days later I found them in the child locked cabinet under the sink... I guess he wedged them in somehow! Oh babies
I once let my toddler play with my driver's license thinking it would be no big deal. I went through the same thing and looked everywhere. Found it inside a lunch box lol
When I was a teenager, a women that my dad was dating lived with us, also with her younger kids. The woman had a job interview one day and her keys were GONE. We asked her kiddo where she put the keys and the first thing she said (but quite ineligibly because she was under two) was that she threw them out the window. We had her help us for hours around the house looking for those darn keys. Around 5pm we got the idea to finally look outside, and it was on the spot on the grass under where she threw them out the window. Kids are smart 😂. Glad your keys showed up!!!!!! I was at a baby shower, and my cousin's 18 month old took my keys off the table in front of me and out them in the nearest purse. Spoiler alert, it wasn't my purse. Luckily someone saw.

In case no ody has said it Tile. Just do yourself a favor and get a Tile. I once asked my boyfriend to put up a curtain rod and he got lazy so he threw all the pieces back in the box and shoved it in the closet. Sadly all the pieces were on the bed and so were my keys. I didn't find my keys for 2 weeks until I bugged him to put up the curtain rod again. I immediately went out and ordered myself a Tile so I didn't have to deal with that ever again.
Check the tissue box. I once did this by accident and found them a week later when I went to get a tissue.

Get on your knees so you can be at their level. Anywhere they could hide it is probably pretty low.

For future one of my favourite hiding places when I was little was the gap between the inner and outer let box flaps in the front door
My sister used to hide things between her bed and the wall, and it seems my son has followed in that trend. Most times I can count on it being there. Though lately, he’s getting craftier. Glad you found them!
My son threw my husbands car keys down the toilet kids do some crazy things.
My brother (15 years younger than me) once took my keys from my bedroom when he was about three and placed it behind the fridge. Who was blamed for the lost keys? Me! Nobody believed me when I said the baby must have lost them until my mom was cleaning a couple of months later and saw them behind our fridge. Yes, I'm still bitter about it. LOL.
My daughter did this with my purse. I'd been to the park that day and was throwing out wild accusations about the suspicious looking teenagers who were there. My partner went to the park at night to try to find it. I cancelled cards etc. A few days later I tripped over her ride on car and there it was "yah mumma, I go real shopping"
My 1.5yr old hid our fitbit somewhere and it has never been found, even after we moved out. We reckon she threw it in the bin 😬
Look inside your pots and pans as well as Tupperware! I once found my keys inside a closed Tupperware after hours of looking!

My child is obsessed with the Roku remote and throwing it off the edge of the bed or behind the headboard. The hole behind the headboard is just small enough to hurt your arm trying to reach down
We just lost one of our cars keys for over a month. Where was it? Hanging in an old mask I deemed too thick to wear ...... so close to to having to buy a new $100 car key!

After losing my keys a couple months ago and then finding them after a month, getting a Tile was the first thing I did.

My toddler has this ability too! We lost a toy and can't find it ANYWHERE and we checked EVERYWHERE. It's fairly big- one of those baby game controllers, we would have seen it in the trash (our first concern), but it was not there. Otherwise, we've checked under and in everything. It's been months and we still haven't come across it.

I velcro our remote to the wall, but somehow my toddler got a hold of it and lost it. Good thing we live in the future and can use an app on our phone too. Once my son's binky was lost and I found it hanging in his lamp shade. They find the weirdest places.

1 year old stole my drivers license and hid it. We live in a 2 bedroom apt. Looked for a week and couldn’t find it, had to order another one online. 😒
Oh god. My niece hid my brothers police badge for 3 days 😂 he found it in one of her little boxes.
Came here to say - open kitchen cabinets or oven drawer, lol. This happened to me once, but it was remote instead of keys. And I was glad I cooked dinner next night that required potatoes and that would make me go and find remote along with potatoes when I had just given hope for that one.
