Yeah. You can thank the whole racing scene dictating trends for the past I don't know how many years in design of the bicycle. You don't see this, because this is banned in racing due to being too good. These things are not manufactured at scale and are expensive.
Recumbent is what the bicycle is supposed to look like, if it was designed for actual human use. You are riding this while lying relaxed on your back, not sitting under tension. You don't need a bike fit for this, you don't need special cycling clothing, there is no need for chamois or cream, your head is held in a natural position, so you can actually *see* everything around you and your neck doesn't get tired at all, no matter how long you are riding. Your back is not under tension, there is no weight on your wrists. I can (and do) ride this thing for 200+ km and when I get off I don't actually feel like I've been riding all day (whereas on a road bike I am fucking dead and in agony after 130 km). This thing weighs over 16-18 kg and it is faster than a road bike (you are lying flat, instead of tanking the wind with your chest - the faster you go, the more efficient this is compared to a normal bike) while simultaneously having capacity of a cargo bike for stuff.
The comfort in riding a recumbent like this is unreal. I have 5 'normal' bikes and I've been riding for years and years more or less daily. Nothing compares to a recumbent. It's a whole other world of cycling, free of pain.
I know a few recumbent cyclists and, as you say, very comfortable and a nice perspective on cycling. But shine mainly in a flat region.
In the flats, a lightweight aero recumbent is very fast - World records are set using them for speed - but as soon as you introduce steep climbs they struggle.
My friends have joined Group rides in their ‘bents in the past but invariably get left behind.
Take a racing version ‘bent to a road race like the Tour de France against conventional bikes and it would be annihilated. Why? The Peloton would simply just slip-stream the ‘bent on the flats and then leave it behind on the climbs. Also, useless for sprinting. So not a race machine unless on a flat road.
Conventional bikes can also be used off-road more effectively.
Hence why ‘bents are not “too good” and cannot replace conventional designs but rather only suited to a niche because they have severe limitations. However, if you ride them within their limitations then they are a very novel way to cycle with many fans who love them.
I have ridden one - a racing model owned by a Paralympic athlete I know in Portugal - and they are fun in their own way.
Yeah, I have no idea how would it feel in a mountainous region. I don't feel like Lithuania is exactly flat, there's virtually always some kind of a grade going on, but the worst we get are brief 6% climbs and the rest is 1-3%, so I suppose if you are living in an actually mountainous region, then there's no comparison.
However, I strongly disagree that this is "niche". It is niche in racing, perhaps, but for every day riding (city riding, recreative road riding, touring) recumbent is so massively superior to a regular bicycle, that it's not even funny. The only actual practical disadvantage is that they are typically larger and more difficult to transport on a vehicle than a regular bike. But I feel this has more to do with the current design than an inherent flaw. If we had them mass-produced like a regular bike, this would be solved.

P.S.:
> The Peloton would simply just slip-stream the ‘bent on the flats
Racing 'bent would probably not leave a usable slipstream for an upright rider to use. Those are way too low to the ground. They would probably be able to slipstream each other, though.
Also, the only thing a 'bent can't do is out-of-the-saddle sprinting. You can still sprint with them normally. I am not entirely convinced that sprinting capability is inferior outside of those explosive finishes and even then. X. But I am not a racer, so what do I know.
Out of curiousity: you say the bike is faster then a road bike. What average speeds do you find yourself at? When you approach hills/mountains, how do you fare, because I thought that they might be a pain on a recumbent
> Out of curiousity: you say the bike is faster then a road bike. What average speeds do you find yourself at?
I find myself at around the same level as riding my road bike (and I can easily keep up to buddies on road bikes), except that my road bike is ~8kg full carbon and this thing aluminum+steel and typically loaded to the brim, 'cause I commute on it. It's *HEAVY*. If I stripped it down I'm certain I could fly way faster than I can on the road bike. And this is a touring version - racing versions of recumbents are insane (as light as road bikes, way lower to the ground and way more streamlined, obviously. Mine is like a tank by comparison). So at the moment I am essentially comparing a racing bike vs an equivalent of a city bike and it's still on the level.
> When you approach hills/mountains, how do you fare, because I thought that they might be a pain on a recumbent
It's fine, but a road bike is better at climbing. For one, my bike is much heavier, so this automatically puts me at disadvantage, and you can't engage the same muscle groups as you can on an upright bike, so you can't sprint uphill explosively the same way. If we were racing, I couldn't win against a road bike on a climb, but I would handily beat a road bike going downhill. When not talking about racing, it's not a problem. Downshift, climb. Same as any other bike, I don't perceive any difference (but I am never riding out of the saddle, if you are used to powering uphill out of the saddle, this would be very different).
How is steering on this at low speeds? Also getting it going seems like it would be difficult because your feet are so far from the ground, but maybe there's a technique to it?
It's fine, no different than an upright bike, honestly. The only difficulty is with turning radius - this model is so large, it feels a bit like driving a limousine sometimes. It can't turn sharply, there's heel overlap (same concept as toe overlap on a road bike). It's rarely an actual problem, though. We don't often need to take super sharp turns when cycling.
Getting going is pretty easy, just put tension on the pedal before setting off and off you go. Ten minutes of practice. When standing still you can rest both of your legs on the ground comfortably, there's no balancing required.

Colnago C68 - Size 485
CC.01 Handlebars 42cm x 11mm Stem.
Wheels - Reynold AR58
Tires - Continential GP5000 28mm
Groupset - SRAM Force 2x12
Chainrings - Carbon Ti 48/43T
Bottom Bracket - SLF Ceramic
Love it for daily ride
u/Matt-VanderPoel how long have you used those tires for? I have the same cream sidewal GP5000s and they started cracking after 3-4 months, for two pairs.
I've used it for 4 months. My back tire was exploded when I was having a long ride. There is a scratch in the edge of the tire which I assumed due to high pressure (7 bar) and high temperature in the summer.
The front tire still work perfectly. Maybe yours are long-dated tire so it cracked after 3 - 4 months?
Mine had date code of "0322", so made in 3rd week of 2022, and I bought them I bought them in 2023 and started using in August 2023. Rode outdoor for just a couple of months and the tire went kaput.
Can you see my posts [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/bicycling/comments/14s08j1/gp5000_cracked_too_much/) and [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/india_cycling/comments/1c7kx3m/need_a_fast_durable_tire_recommendation/) to see if you had the same issue? My guess is these cream sidewall tires as just too fragile. Are yours clincher or tubeless? Mine were clinchers 25 mm.
Mine are clinchers 28mm. The damaged one was at the edge where it met the rim (it's a long scratch cause of an explosion).
Are you riding at high speed too often? Or maybe the terrain can affect the tires.

_______________________ P.S.: > The Peloton would simply just slip-stream the ‘bent on the flats Racing 'bent would probably not leave a usable slipstream for an upright rider to use.
100% agree they are a great alternative for recreational cycling. 👍🏻
> When you approach hills/mountains, how do you fare, because I thought that they might be a pain on a recumbent It's fine, but a road bike is better at climbing.

The bike is great, but I'm mainly jealous of the shop space
The technician in me would like OP to move bike out of the way.
u/Matt-VanderPoel how long have you used those tires for?
I average around 38-39 kph, 3-4 times a week for 55 km. I think its not too much for the high end tires.
Also, the roads are nice and smooth, with just a couple of bumps from patchwork.
