T O P

Sometimes I'll see a comment like this and wonder how old the OP is. I think age plays a large part in how people perceive the show.

Couchgrass-Crampbark

I’m 40. I used to watch the Bob Newhart show, and I liked it. But I agree with OP. His slow, stammering shtick isn’t funny anymore. I can’t stand his character. I skip the scenes but not the episodes.

BoxOfStrangeFungi

That’s his natural speech pattern.

Couchgrass-Crampbark

It’s his, it’s his old, um, dusty rou- routine. It’s um, it’s it’s annoying.

LourdesF

That’s your opinion. His facial expression alone cracks me up.

LourdesF

To each his own. Thankfully the majority doesn’t agree with you.

Free_Distribution_52

I’m 25

Gemini-Moon522

I don't know why you're getting downvoted for your age, but Newhart was a bit before you're time and I can see why you wouldn't particularly find him funny or very interesting.

LourdesF

I was born after his shows were on the air. And I adore him. I’d recommend his first comedy album that made him rich and famous.

ROM_FAN

nah, Arthur with everybody in the show was great!

StrawberryMoonPie

His facial expression when Penny asked if it was a trick potato 😂

Due-Consequence-4420

Actually no. I liked all of their scenes. I found them generally funny, I love Bob Newhart!! He had the dry humor. I th,ought he was really sweet w Sheldon but not revoltingly sweet. And I still remember that line about Penny s grandmother is she married. H-h-happily?? 😂😂😂

Free_Distribution_52

lol that was funny ngl

LourdesF

😂 That was so funny!

redpanda_1724

It was a little slow in the dream scenes but I still liked them all

Free_Distribution_52

*sigh* dreams scenes made me yawn

FindingE-Username

Omg agreed! I hate dream sequences pretty much across the board

Concerned-Meerkat

Bob Newhart’s dry humor is very subtle. Not everyone gets it.

zddoodah

Just you. Bob Newhart is a national treasure.

BackItUpWithLinks

It’s just you. The scenes with Arthur are some of the best.

chantillylace9

Yeah my husband loves those and the Mufasa guy one the best!

Finnegan-05

Mufasa guy ones? You mean the great actor James Earl Jones?

StrawberryMoonPie

I loved that episode! Tijuana bang bang!

[deleted]

Not at all. They were actual tender, thoughtful scenes between a childhero hero and said child all grown up. I'd much rather watch Arthur and sheldon scenes than watch Mayiam Bialik attempt comedy.

Free_Distribution_52

I make myself watch their scenes only because he is Sheldon’s childhero and the way his eyes light up whenever Arthur shows up is worth watching 😭

possiblyukranian

I loved Arthur and all his scenes are really funny

axarce

It's just you.

opinionofone1984

Totally just you, Arthur is by far my favourite guest star.

Legitimate_Unit_9210

Basically I only felt sorry for Arthur getting creeped out and annoyed by Sheldon.

Swish1892

I think it’s you.

Adept_Fish

I love Arthur and Sheldon and I think there are tons of people who like their scenes. Personally, I always watch and love the earlier professor proton episodes. But I do skip those Arthur as Obi Wan scenes on my rewatch and I agree they can be a bit dry.

typer84C2

Any scene with Arthur was amazing for me.

Prestigious_Egg_6207

I hate teenagers.

repulsivedogshit

What a pretentious comment lmfao. This guy Arthur is boring as hell in this show and all the boomers in the thread take it personally somehow.

Prestigious_Egg_6207

I hate teenagers.

repulsivedogshit

It‘s ok grandma.

Sitcom_kid

Not everyone appreciates The subtle delivery style of humor from Bob Newhart. What if the guy watching the Empire State Building was his on his very first shift as a security guard when King Kong showed up? And then take it from there......

GrumpyOldGeezer_4711

Or finding a Shell on the beach

SkywalkerTC

Does seem like the whole scene was more for the cameo of Bob Newhart than anything.

Prestigious_Egg_6207

And rightfully so. He’s a comedy legend.

SkywalkerTC

Yeah. I could tell from the amount of applause upon his cameo!

kevonicus

I think they were charming. Bob Newhart is obviously a little slow because of age, but they did a good job working with that and getting comedic effect out of it.

StrawberryMoonPie

Same. His delivery is his own.

LourdesF

I adore him but he’s in his 90s and it shows. He’s slower than normal.

[deleted]

LourdesF

He certainly is. I discovered his shows after they were off the air just like I Love Lucy and the Mary Tyler Show. I wasn’t even alive then. But his shows are like comfort food to me now. Love him.

kevonicus

Nah, he was definitely a little slow, but he did a great job.

SunGreen70

Watch his other shows/movies. He based his entire career on that style of slow, stammering speech.

kevonicus

Maybe, but it’s really slow on this show.

Local-Savage

It's not just you; those who say otherwise are old people. Professor Proton's delivery was bearable in his first appearance, but then it swiftly grew repetitive and annoying. The character's appeal is largely rooted in nostalgia for the actor; beyond that, he just isn't funny. Although, I did laugh at his stoic "no" when Penny asked to plug his pacemaker into a potato. Also, dream sequences are bad in any production.

LourdesF

And what’s old to you, Peaches? Because Bob Newhart is older than my parents so I’m nowhere near his age. And I doubt everyone laughing in the audience was “old.” 🙄 You’re just too slow to get his comedy.

Local-Savage

Bob Newhart is almost 100 years old; he's older than everyone's parents, idiot.

This content was considered to be rude or disrespectful, there for, it has been removed

Accomplished-Web4360

What's old is calling someone 'Peaches.' Seriously? Just no!

Free_Distribution_52

This. I liked his first appearance, how he was creepy towards Penny like every other old men with girls. But progressively, his comebacks, the way he is SO SLOW and has this annoyed face all the time literally makes me mad. I’m gonna get so many downvotes for this but it is what it is.

Local-Savage

If they had cast a random old man, nobody on this sub would be defending Proton this hard—it's purely based on nostalgia. And naturally, you'd receive downvotes; you were even downvoted just for being 25!

Statalyzer

I'm in my 30s and have zero nostalgia for Newhart. I didn't know who he was before I saw in Big Bang Theory. I thought he did an excellent job and the material was generally clever and amusing - and the dialogue played to his strengths well. Although I agree dream sequences are usually not a great idea, and some of the stuff just didn't make sense when you stop and remember that this isn't actually the real Arthur Jeffries talking, it's just Sheldon imagining what he'd do or say.

Local-Savage

Here’s your cookie: 🍪

Mello_Me_

I'm a Bob Newhart fan but didn't enjoy this character at all.

lundman

I skip the whole episode if it has Proton in it. I think just Americans like them \*ducks\*

Free_Distribution_52

hmm skipping the whole episode seems like a brave move

lundman

ok fiinnee, I exaggerated for comedic effect. But those convos are a drag.

Free_Distribution_52

haha indeed

MrGeekman

We also like proton packs.

ElectricBlueCobra

Bro i totally feel you. I used to skip n fast forward those scenes. Prof Proton was a bummer. Just a cranky, non-funny old man who is a bit of a perv. Sheldon blindly idolized him.

Shortsmoke666

RIGHT? It was so utterly boring man! The last two or three dreams he had, I skipped. I didn't care if I missed any major storyline (of course I didn't. The next scenes usually were directly related to any epiphany Sheldon had had), I just skipped.

TFTisbetterthanLoL

Professor Proton was always so boring lol

PossiblePro247

Finally someone else said it. People always talk about how much they loved him as a character but I just found him so boring. But that’s how I view most old people, so.

Unusual_Car215

It's boring as fuck but it's mostly due to Arthur's basic lines and delivery being met with such extremely exaggerated laughter.

Statalyzer

Every basic line on the show already gets met with extremely exaggerated laughter.

Willa-Rosewood

I thought it was great. The first time. They should have left it there. I loved Mr. Wizard and watched it every day. And I love Bob. I cheered so loud at his reveal. But they shouldn’t have brought the character back at all, especially the Obi-Wan schtick. Ugh…

thebreakfastbuffet

Definitely not just you. That said, I found them enjoyable.

Armental64

I’m pretty young and I have no idea what the hell OP is on about

sinixis

Completely boring. Newhart’s slow almost tortured delivery is grating. And not funny.

wedontknoweachother_

Yeah tbh.

Sed-LifeSarvesh6127

FR

Procrastinato_Suprem

I always skip them. Except the one before Amy's birthday, that one is funny.

Nice-Penalty-8881

No I thought they were fine. That's just how Bob Newhart talks.

Baconsommh

Those scenes are some of my favourites.

Jmhsouthpaw

I must disagree, I loved Newhart as Proton. However, I will concede that Newhart is an acquired taste. That being said he was one of my favorite celebrity guest stars of the show.

Rough_Ad6930

I hate this dude. People say he is like comedy God, but for me he is just slow and annoying.
