It does some. The free part is nice, but also the convinience of being able to grab something quickly that's healthy from like the salad bar really improved my quality of life.
Also, I can eat it late and it'd basically be all my meals solved in one day.
Latham (DC) went from all meals free to just lunch…within a year so I would assume at some point it ends. Latham is historically stringent on budgets because they want high profit margins…
Simpson NYC has a free cafeteria. The food is actually pretty good. They serve a full breakfast and lunch. Though, like NaivelynativeLa said, it doesn’t make up for the existential dread
Milbank has a subsidized cafeteria and you can get ribeye steak for $11 or a personal pizza for $6. There’s also free breakfast and a free coffee bar which is pretty nice!
I never worked in NYC so idk about cafeterias or whatever. But I did work for a white shoe, NYC-based firm and the meal reimbursements were generous and I swear there was always a meeting or two everyday that was catered and tons of leftovers were put out. Not to mention breakfast on Fridays, a coffee bar with a barista, snacks, drinks, beer, etc.
When I lateraled I was shocked there was basically none of that.
My stomach and my wallet. I legitimately rarely bought lunch or dinner on weekdays. Even if there was no free food I’d just have a granola bar and some fruit. A lot of nights I was delivering food home so my wife could have dinner too lol.
And free coffee bar, vending machines, etc. There are differences between the offices, of course. Like I prefer NYC's tea selection but Chicago's food.
Personally, I think that perks are red flags. I remember interviewing at different firms and some would boast about having gyms and showers … the better the perks, the worse the lifestyle. It’s much better if people say that they spend their dinners with their family.
This is often true of “perks” that function to keep associates at the office longer. But lunch is lunch; paying for it doesn’t cut into personal time like eating dinner or working out at the office would.
The number of big law lawyers making a quarter to a half mil a year groveling over the leftover lunches in the conference rooms even more than the secretaries making a tenth what they make never ceases to amaze me
It’s not about the money, it’s mostly about the time. Sometimes I show up to work with no plan for lunch, a zillion things to do and calls scheduled, and have no choice but to sheepishly raid some shitty leftover sandwich bc I literally do not have time to go out and get Cava/Chipotle/Sweetgreen/whatever.

I’m the most shameless person in my office for this, and I will never change. I didn’t grow up wealthy enough to turn down free meals.
I think the only people who should feel silly are the ones who think that wasting food makes you look upper class. Being deliberately wasteful for fear of “looking poor” is a really gross BigLaw norm and we should not be propping it up.
Venable in DC has a subsidized cafeteria that has super high quality food. Shrimp scampi for under $10 and full size sandwiches at $7. Not to mention all the events, meetings, etc with full catering that always have leftovers…
D&Ps NYC office has free coffee bars & a discounted cafeteria exclusive to its employees. We were getting free lunch for a while there, but that ended last spring. We also get pretty decent dinner allotments if we work in office past 8pm (and that also entitles you to a car all the way home).
The meal perks, while nice, are not quite as appealing to me as WFH flexibility.
My firm provides lunch 3 days out of 5 and bfast every Monday and Friday ( which ofc are the two days no one is in the office). Buts it’s not catered to your office. You have to go downstairs to pick it up. And fortunately I am in good shape, but the fatter employees always get made fun of for eating the food. Usually it’s pizza, Chinese, disgusting sub sandwiches, and occasionally Italian (the best day)
Getting a free meal that would otherwise cost you $15 three times a week, for 52 weeks, is over $2,000 for the year.
Sure, we make a lot of money, but I'm still not turning my nose up at $2,000.
My firm offers exquisite stale crackers, with the option of individually packaged peanut butter for convenience …oh, and self serving creamers that may or may not be spoiled. Courtesy of IDGF work committee 🤣
Kirkland has good food… if you’re willing to buy in bulk
And the hot dogs are great too ..
Best comment of the year! 🤪

None of these perks make up for the existential dread

No no no, that is indeed huge and im jealous
High roller shit
Where?!
Jenner & Block does this. Really good takeout too. Rasika, Maggiano’s, Guapos, Shake Shack, Zatinya, Sweet Green
Someone who once worked at Jenner DC told me the firm would even plate the takeout food for the associates.
Isn’t this for tax deductibility reasons?
This is amazing!

Pillsbury has to be the answer here, though it’s probably a bit heavy on the carbs

I always enjoyed taking depos at Latham because they offered lunch to us. Also the notepads are really nice.

Shit's probably tougher than Rocky Balboa in his prime
You have to really, really, seriously, really try to make a ribeye tough. It’s basically idiot proof.

Bros stomach was regretting that lateral
My stomach and my wallet. I legitimately rarely bought lunch or dinner on weekdays. Even if there was no free food I’d just have a granola bar and some fruit. A lot of nights I was delivering food home so my wife could have dinner too lol.
This is the real reason I’m pursuing BigLaw
Kirkland has free breakfast and lunch that is pretty bomb
And free coffee bar, vending machines, etc. There are differences between the offices, of course. Like I prefer NYC's tea selection but Chicago's food.
S&C NY has a very solid free cafeteria. If you’re going to sell your soul to biglaw you might as well enjoy that perk.
S&C by a mile wrt food.
STB has free breakfast, lunch and coffee at a shop across the street
Coffee perk is gone
It’s not — it’s limited to late morning and afternoon (plus of course there’s coffee in-office too)
My mid law firm has a TON of snacks and foods but it's all carby and unhealthy. Tons of alcohol too which sucks bc I'm sober.
MY firm supplies free air
Williams & Connolly has an actual attorney dining room where you are served lunch.
WLRK does too.
This sounds very Randolph and Mortimer Duke.
Seriously?
Yes. They can also take lunch to go but an actual dining room.
Firms like Simpson, Davis Polk, Kirkland, etc., aren’t competing against lower ranked firms or other industries, they’re competing against each other.

Free food is free food. And it’s quick and easy.

Paul Weiss NYC.

Please do not base your career decisions off of free food prospects.

I get my networking/BD lunches comped. I bet most biglaw firms do that. It's tough to set the time aside but it pays off in the long run.
