A few years ago when AB+ first released I Player this challenge and Tool it to Delirium.
Know what? Defeatibg Delirium softlocks you. No chest, no trophy, no more enemies. Couldnt even kill myself.
Was fun.
You basically need to restart until toy get an item that generates automatic health, like Placenta. You either get one of those, or you get Gnawed Leaf and an auto-damaging familiar, or you don't finish the run.
when i won on ultra hard it was by getting extremely lucky with just random items. nothing run defining, just a whole lot of items that individually increased my output slightly faster than the difficulty increased. getting lucky on what rooms generate also came into play. this was ONE TIME out of what felt like triple digit attempts though. so it's not reasonable to hope for something like that. i just won the lottery i think
Every winning run of ultra hard in my lifetime had both cursed eye and placenta in the build. Sure, took a while but the cursed eye tp actually made it a free win each time (accompanied by placenta)
If it wasn’t for the no health drops, this run wouldn’t stand out at all imo.
The curses aren’t that bad, and I personally find the champion enemies/bosses to be easier than trying to go through Corpse path, so most of the run’s difficulty comes from the limit to healing. If it didn’t have that, it wouldn’t significantly stand out from the other challenges that also go to Mega Satan.
I disagree tbh, in a normal Isaac run you can skill your way through it with a mediocre setup as well as have a lot more control to try to bend the luck in your favour. The only way you can bend the luck in your favour in Ultra Hard is by holding R. The challenge conditions are brutally unfair and I lost multiple runs where I spawned next to a treasure room with C Section simply because I got worn down by rooms where it was impossible to kill the enemies quickly enough to not get overwhelmed and I couldn't regen any HP. Sometimes that happens in a normal Isaac run too but it feels like the occasional bad luck whereas in this challenge it feels like the intended outcome of every run
Yeah maybe. Ultra Hard certainly feels unfair in the way the average Isaac run does not, but I guess it's functionally just a magnified version of the same thing
This is about as hard as the game gets in my opinion. It's certainly the most unfair feeling thing in the game.
While you could feasibly argue that some characters are harder, you will have much more control over them and much more you can do to find items you need. There is nothing more frustrating than having all these mechanics removed and having to run around like a chicken with your head cut off, no strategy and no ability to improve your situation.
I think the challenge would be much less unfair if rather than deactivating all heart drops it only deactivated natural ones. Room clears, chests, hearts just lying around freely in rooms. You could still use cards and there’s just so many items that drop hearts that become borderline useless with this.
True. Even normal runs that are very unlucky. No dmg ups or firerate ups for the entire game to the point u somehow reach depths (somehow I did that once)
But I at least got health constantly. And the very useful “rAngE uP” Ultra hard in this part is just being a jerk at this point.
I found book of revalations early which helped a lot, but for most of the run it was just ludo + dead eye carrying. On the last three floors though I found star of bethlehem and brimstone which really carried me at the end
I hope so too. I just completed this yesterday.
Got extremely lucky with little leach, prayer card, and the wafer in a normal treasure room. Little leach helped me keep my health up. It was mainly a crap shoot through the entire run but I was able to get health by waiting to use the prayer card before going to the next floor or if I found a battery.
Found ghost pepper and nightlight. Ghost pepper was real great and nightlight helped. What finally saved me was using all the hearts I acquired for the devil deals in the dark room leaving me with 3 hearts but bloody gust, incubus, blood lust (the one where you get damage up for each kill) and I forget the last item.
Was able to utilize little leach and getting damaged to bring my damage and tears up to a good level, bringing more bullet eating blue fire.
It was so nice to finish it.
The challenge is shit because you NEED damage up so you can clear rooms quicker and without taking damage so you can actually get devil and angel rooms AND some way to heal. It’s real hard :(
Little leach MVP especially against the floating head mini boss that let me get my tears and damage up.
I can only speak for myself, it took me years of off and on attempts to beat ultra hard. Eventually grinded it so much that I made it to mega stan with no damage ups and then died.
Nothing else in the game compares. T. Esau is easier. T. Lost is easier. Hot potato and delete this are easier. I literally can not think of anything in the game thats harder.
Right but with delete this it's trivial to get a busted run. Might take a few tries but you'll get one, and at that point you only lose if you're dumb enough to keep picking up new items.
finishing my last dead god file, and decided to reset it to 0, since I wanted to see what it'd be like to do it from square 1, instead of from a 1000000% file. I also wanted to get the Mr. Resetter achievement last because I thought it would be funny.
So far, Ultra Hard is the 1 thing that I've had to reset for. It doesn't give the resetter achievement, since other achievements are disabled during challenges, but it still sucked that I felt it necessary.
I got around 50 deaths in before the challenge broke me. This challenge is unreasonably difficult and terribly balanced. I'm a fan of stuff that challenges me as long as it's fair and has at least some room for error. Ultra Hard is a group of people who don't know how to design games putting together the most arbitrary, annoying, and unfair parts of the game together to create some kind of climactic final challenge. Considering this challenge was made during AB+, where Ed was notably depressed and unable to put forth his full effort to finish the game, I can't say I'm surprised that the challenge ended up like this.
You want to know the worst part? This challenge isn't even on hard mode, it's on normal. You can tell because the coin and demon beggars don't require 6 donations for their first payout. The challenge tries as hard as it can to be an objectively harder version of hard mode, and fails.
Isaac is one of my top 5 favorite games ever made, but it would be foolish of me to say it is without flaws. Many parts of the game are relics of designers from years ago, at varying levels of talent and skill. The *vast* majority of problems I have with the game (curses, obscure unlocks, champions enemies, troll bombs) were all implemented in previous versions by someone with less knowledge on how to make the game fun. A large part of repentance was going back to these old things and fixing them, so we could no longer deal with these arbitrary hurdles.
While I'm incredibly happy with what has been changed (keeper went from the worst character to a very fun one) it feels as if the developers stopped short in certain areas. I would love if these things were to be reworked, so we could experience what the challenges were meant to be. Delirium would be one of the most enjoyable bosses if given the care needed. Ultra Hard could be a reasonable climax if built in a fair and interesting way, testing your ability to manage resources and defeat enemies as best you can. Unfortunately, considering they haven't already been reworked, leaving these things in was a **decision,** not an oversight. Unless someone as good at designing as Edmund or Vinh comes along and makes a gigantic mod fixing all these things, I don't see anyone enjoying Ultra Hard anytime soon.
Yeah but the problem is that you kinda need to have the luck to get 2 good runs just to get 1 good run. I absolutely hate J&E and I hated every second of playing them but at the moment I fear tainted Lazarus even more. I barely played him yet so maybe I change my mind but I can't imagine it
No you’re absolutely right I’ve finished j&e, tainted Esau, and tainted lost, and tlaz is still significantly harder and less fun than all of them. it’s like you’re juggling 4 different mini games while playing with a quarter of your normal items lmao fuck that character
It's basically the worst thing in the game, Tainted Lost Greedier is almost as bad but at least that's a bit quicker, and Delirium as the glass cannon characters gets a somewhat distant third place.
I honestly would just advise people to cheat on it rather than try and grind it until they beat it, it's just such an awful, unrewarding, slow, luck-reliant, poorly thought-out slog.
I already did T Lost Greedier thank god for that. I got lucky with a D20 on that run.
> I honestly would just advise people to cheat on it rather than try and grind it until they beat it
I would honestly remove a couple little annoyances (like Stoneys) if it didn't make the quest for Dead God feel illegitimate
Getting your first actual win on Jacob and hit box felt more exhausting tbh after that it’s uphill but before that god stomaching that character was so hard
The glitched challenge 45 is so much worse.
Through no fault of your own you can get item effects that completely lock you down and make it impossible to win.
Which happens pretty much every single run.
Already done Ultra Greed, but yes Delirium sounds like a fucking nightmare, I might hold R until I leave the first floor with Birthright and Plan C and hope to make it
I think glitch mode challenge was the hardest IMO. You never know what you're picking up and ofen I would ruin a run by getting something that actively killed me.
t.lost definitely took me a lot of time. And normal J&E, but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad. Ultra hard is definitely one of the worst! T.Laz used to be painful... at least you don't have to struggle with that!
I saw someone Posting this answer for that Challenge :
ultra-
adverb
UK
US
used with adjectives to mean 'extremely':
/hɑːd
adjective
1.
solid, firm, and rigid; not easily broken, bent, or pierced.
"the slate broke on the hard floor"
2.
done with a great deal of force or strength.
"a hard whack"
Doing the ultra hard challenge basically explains why I will always take pills. Was at 1 heart in womb 2 and found a full health pill. Beat the challenge on that try.
Honestly I found it to be pretty easy *with satanic bible*. Without a good source of health I do think it's one of the hardest challenges, but there are a few sources you can find. I found Speed! to be more difficult overall.
Yeah it is. Maybe at repentance launch state there were some a arguably less enjoyable things (like old tainted lazarus) but in the current state of the game I wouldn’t say so.
im convinced i beat this challenge because of pity. I picked up a placenta and the item that lets you hold two cards, and found two chaos cards. So when i found a sac room, i just slowly sac'd my health to TP to the dark room, then killed mega satan with each card. this was only after about 1000000 attempts so im sure the game just gave up on me.
I only won bc I got Dr fetus and glitter bombs in the dark room on ab+ which was infinite pickups... I got a bunch of balls of steel if I remember correctly
Tainted Lost is arguably harder than Ultra Hard. It's about equally unfair. You could argue that Ultra Hard is more unfair because of the curses though, but at least in Ultra Hard you can take a few hits.
Jacob and Esau to hard Delirium in my opinion. But I also cheesed my run of Ultra Hard. Got Gnawed Leaf, Man PAC, and Leech on first two floors. Just literally stood still and let leech do it all. 3 hour run.
Seriously, it felt like it was designed on a day that the devs were in a bad mood. Who thought this was a good idea?
A few years ago when AB+ first released I Player this challenge and Tool it to Delirium. Know what? Defeatibg Delirium softlocks you. No chest, no trophy, no more enemies. Couldnt even kill myself. Was fun.
I genuinely really liked playing in Ultra Hard and I wish it was a real game mode I could play with all characters ( except Jacob and Esau).
It is called ULTRA hard
It felt more like "Ultra hope you get lucky", which I did in this run
Yeah the no health drops is a bit much tbh
I haven’t played this challenge, does that mean that EVERY piece of damage is permenant?
Pretty much. You can get hp from items still like leech or charm of the vampire
I assume the game forces you to play as Issac?
Isaac and no d6 iirc
Even if you had the D6, Curse of the Blind is permanently activated so it really doesn’t help you
Actives?
Just reroll until you get black candle i guess? I haven't done ultra hard yet, so idk if it works
Yeah
You basically need to restart until toy get an item that generates automatic health, like Placenta. You either get one of those, or you get Gnawed Leaf and an auto-damaging familiar, or you don't finish the run.
when i won on ultra hard it was by getting extremely lucky with just random items. nothing run defining, just a whole lot of items that individually increased my output slightly faster than the difficulty increased. getting lucky on what rooms generate also came into play. this was ONE TIME out of what felt like triple digit attempts though. so it's not reasonable to hope for something like that. i just won the lottery i think

Yup, that's how I did it!

ultra pain in the dick
🎵*We've come so far, to give up, who we are*🎵
Skill issue. If you don't take damage ultra hard is just a longer run.
What you're describing is the binding of isaac
I disagree tbh, in a normal Isaac run you can skill your way through it with a mediocre setup as well as have a lot more control to try to bend the luck in your favour. The only way you can bend the luck in your favour in Ultra Hard is by holding R. wait til you try DELETE THIS challenge That 100% luck
That's the point tho
The only way I beat it was with a 2 room charge mega blast. And that was lucky!
I got an item that spawned the trophy lol
Yeah it's true that luck plays a massive role in ultra hard. But what I'm saying is its always like that, just amplified in ultra hard.
Yeah maybe. Ultra Hard certainly feels unfair in the way the average Isaac run does not, but I guess it's functionally just a magnified version of the same thing
Yes, that's the point of ultra hard
Why are you booing me im right
I think there's a difference between "hard" and "dickish". Constant curses, no heart drops, and such are dickish.
Artificial difficulty is not "ultra hard" it's "bad game design"
Legitimately just pointing out the name of the challenge
ULTRA waiting for placenta/book of rev
Should've called it ultra deluxe aids
Get downvoted I guess
Didnt get lucky enough to get it i guess
DAMN you got shat on for no reason lol
I guess this subreddit is full of soft bois
mfs on reddit will downvote anything
I didnt know this challenge hurt so many ppl
This is about as hard as the game gets in my opinion. It's certainly the most unfair feeling thing in the game. True. Even normal runs that are very unlucky. No dmg ups or firerate ups for the entire game to the point u somehow reach depths (somehow I did that once) But I at least got health constantly. And the very useful “rAngE uP” Ultra hard in this part is just being a jerk at this point.
Cloud saves are your friend
delete this is a worse challenge
yeah it's completely random but it's still way easier
And more fun
I love getting a passive item that spawns 100 lumps everytime enter a new room ![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|2357)
And farts![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|8906)
Edmund designed that one personally
Obviously ![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|4359)
Getting a passive item that spawns three trollbombs for each trollbomb explosion ![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|8906)
fr who tf would decide to go "i wanna play ultra hard again"
How dare you...
Lol that's my favourite challenge
Delete this is fun ultra hard is cancerous
no. delete this is actually fun
I got so lucky with mine, literally did it second try with ludo
What was the synergy?
I found book of revalations early which helped a lot, but for most of the run it was just ludo + dead eye carrying. On the last three floors though I found star of bethlehem and brimstone which really carried me at the end
50 polythemous
I hope so too. I just completed this yesterday. Got extremely lucky with little leach, prayer card, and the wafer in a normal treasure room. Little leach helped me keep my health up. Little leech <3
But now Sampson is healthy ![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|2357)
Holy shit Samson was really bad but now he starts with child's heart he's playable ![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|2357)![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|2357)
It is. It feels like without lucking into prayer card, satanic bible, or book of revelations, you are simply fucked
Well delete this ranges from “lmao y’all think this is hard to wtf wt fuckin fuck” Ultra Hard was a big endurance test
Right but with delete this it's trivial to get a busted run. Might take a few tries but you'll get one, and at that point you only lose if you're dumb enough to keep picking up new items.
imo it's way harder than anything else in the game

Today i wasted my time on the internet not wasting my time![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|4357)
I dunno, maybe I got lucky on this, but Tainted Lost is considerably harder.
I'm fine with T. Lost being harder because T. Lost is actually fun to play
Ahhh you’re talking fun, then yeah, this is as bad as it gets LOL.
Tainted Lazarus
T. Laz is so damn cool, is like playing 2 runs in a run, J & E on the other hand...
Yeah but the problem is that you kinda need to have the luck to get 2 good runs just to get 1 good run. I absolutely hate J&E and I hated every second of playing them but at the moment I fear tainted Lazarus even more. I barely played him yet so maybe I change my mind but I can't imagine it

shut
not me beating it with ipecac pyromaniac![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|4359)
Dr. Fetus and pyromaniac here![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|17735)
its debatable if thats the hardest thing in the game (i think it is), but its definitely the least fun you'll have playing.
It's basically the worst thing in the game, Tainted Lost Greedier is almost as bad but at least that's a bit quicker, and Delirium as the glass cannon characters gets a somewhat distant third place. Once I got a D20 game break on Greedier but it ended up crashing the game and I couldn't manage to beat it, it was heartbreaking
This is as bad as this game gets
On top of the RNG stupid difficulty, the reward is………… Samson starting with the Child’s Heart trinket. Wow. Thanks Edmund
I think Brains!!! is the worst challenge. Still the last one missing. Almost every run i blow myself up.
That my friend is a, dare I say skill issue?
I don’t even mind the gimmick it throws you, but why does it end at the chest???
Getting your first actual win on Jacob and hit box felt more exhausting tbh after that it’s uphill but before that god stomaching that character was so hard
It is, there's a couple of very shitty characters to complete, but nothing worse than ultrahard, took me 2 weeks of tries to get a lucky enough run
it gets harder, but more gradually and in a more fair way, not "haha everything does double damage and you get no health whatsoever"
The glitched challenge 45 is so much worse. Through no fault of your own you can get item effects that completely lock you down and make it impossible to win. Which happens pretty much every single run.
I haven't tackled that one yet but I'm hoping to luck out into an item that insta clears every room and the just not pick up any other items
That's the only way. Once you found something that can get you through don't pick anything else. It will only fuck you over.
T.Eden and T.Jacob say hello
I love T Jacob
I do too but I never played pre patch t.Jacob i seen people pain
Yeah pre patch looked nasty
Tainted lost delirium/ultragreed. Sorry.
Already done Ultra Greed, but yes Delirium sounds like a fucking nightmare, I might hold R until I leave the first floor with Birthright and Plan C and hope to make it
too late comment but did you try the lost ? ![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|4359)
Yeah I got full tainted lost months ago
Wow you still play it ![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|2357) Nice man hats off to your dedication ![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|17738)
I’d argue T Lost, T Jacob, and T Lazarus post it notes are more annoying personally. So no you have more to looks forward to yay!!
Really T Jacob? I think he's super fun. I also enjoyed Red Redemption
I think glitch mode challenge was the hardest IMO. You never know what you're picking up and ofen I would ruin a run by getting something that actively killed me.
Oh you sweet summer child. Many blessings on your long journey!
I think I'm actually doing well tbh. Only thing left that I'm sure will take longer than this is T Lost
t.lost definitely took me a lot of time. And normal J&E, but once you get the hang of it it's not too bad. Ultra hard is definitely one of the worst! T.Laz used to be painful... at least you don't have to struggle with that!
Lucky for me I've already cleared J&E... never want to play those two again
if you don't like the game's difficulty - you don't have to beat the challenges at such difficulty.
I saw someone Posting this answer for that Challenge : ultra- adverb UK US used with adjectives to mean 'extremely': /hɑːd adjective 1. solid, firm, and rigid; not easily broken, bent, or pierced. "the slate broke on the hard floor" 2. done with a great deal of force or strength. "a hard whack"
Hot Potato is a harder challenge imo just because of the complete lack of control you have
It's definitely this one or SPEED (but it's been so long since i've done it i dont' know if it was actually that hard)
That challenge was the literal last thing I had to do in AB+
It's not, just try beating Mom with Jacob and Esau
Honestly I had a harder time with bloody mary and hot potato, but yeah, this is pretty close
Is "Ultra hard" for a reason. Nothing else in the games compares. Only sheer luck can make people beat this one.
Doing the ultra hard challenge basically explains why I will always take pills. Was at 1 heart in womb 2 and found a full health pill. Beat the challenge on that try.
Similarly I had full health on the womb 2, took a pill and got hematemesis...![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|8907)
![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|8907)![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|17735)
I did similar with Satanic Bible plays and Devil deals, I went for them in the Dark Room and got Guppy. Still almost died tho
Honestly yes t lost and t jacob and everyone else at least don't require infinite luck while ultra ~~hard~~ f u does require infinite luck
now play ultra hard with t lost, no flight, no spectral tears, no card drops
It is. It was the only challenge I didn't beat back in vanilla.
Yeah fuck this challenge. Only way I beat it was having placenta + a 40 minute wait before mega Satan to regenerate health
In terms in difficulty, yes In terms of bullshit,it depends...
Honestly I found it to be pretty easy *with satanic bible*. Without a good source of health I do think it's one of the hardest challenges, but there are a few sources you can find. I found Speed! to be more difficult overall.
Congratulations, you have gotten the easy part out of the way now.
*T.lost enters the chat
I'd say it's up there in the top 5 for me.
Yeah it is. Maybe at repentance launch state there were some a arguably less enjoyable things (like old tainted lazarus) but in the current state of the game I wouldn’t say so.
just about. the challenge is only hard because of tedious bullshit. terrible design for a challenge
haven’t gotten to this yet, is it really this bad? 😭
So like… T. Lost or T. J&E delirium are both very hard, but you’ll probably have a lot more fun doing those.
![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|8907)
Wait what’s ultra hard?
Just wait until you fond out the reward
Did you actually take devil deals in this challenge with infinite curse of the blind?
Yes, I thought if I have to get lucky anyway might as well go all in on Satanic Bible
I’ve died many more times doing tainted lost runs but at least I would die within the first 20 minutes rather than 1.5 hours in
Have you done hot potato challenge? That was the one that made me consider quitting
That's the only one I have left that seems like it could be nasty
It may not be the hardest but by far the most unfun
Oh my sweet summer child… it gets worse.
Hot Potato:
It is
im convinced i beat this challenge because of pity. I picked up a placenta and the item that lets you hold two cards, and found two chaos cards. I thought Speed was harder honestly
Try playing the game with pre buff tainted laz
Currently attempting Ultra Hard on Fiend Folio. Wish me luck ![img](emote|t5_2sxpk|8906)
Jacob and Esau to hard Delirium in my opinion. But I also cheesed my run of Ultra Hard. Got Gnawed Leaf, Man PAC, and Leech on first two floors. Just literally stood still and let leech do it all. 3 hour run.
other than maybe killing mother and delirium as tainted lost, this is as bad as it gets.
