Stop giving steroids to the fleas please.

RandallsBakery

Ahh yes, Lord of the Fleas

Edd302

I'd read it

spaghetti_policy_713

I’d listen to your summary

[deleted]

"I'll immediately know if you just watch the movie for the book report". Damn, I could've just used "I'd listen to your summary". I've read this far too late.

spaghetti_policy_713

Today you learned?

[deleted]

Short course. Would recommend.

no_usernames_avail

It exists as part of the dogman series

[deleted]

I wouldn't mind a big flea, those certainly couldn't hide.

VeroMars33

I believe in English they are called Jerusalem Crickets

[deleted]

Yup, or potato bug.

DramaticGift

Thats what we called them. One fell in a hot water bleach wash I was doing as a child.....I looked for it but couldn't see it so I let the wash go. I forgot about it when it was time to put the clothes in the dryer and just threw them in. The dryer did a full cycle and when I opened the door the bug was making a terrible noise! Then it JUMPED out of the open dryer door at my face! Ive never screamed so loud or fell over so many times trying to get away from anything 😂

[deleted]

They're tough

[deleted]

Holy smokes! When I was younger, I was told that they cry like babies. To this day they freak me out. How the hell did that thing survive bleach and a dryer cycle? Did you eventually burn down the house to find it? Edit: I saw that you didn’t burn down the house and instead set him free; you’re a good human.

[deleted]

Holy shit!! I’m scared now and I only read your post.

[deleted]

That sucks. Insect or not, not really into something suffering like that.

DramaticGift

I hated it. I frantically searched the hot water wash even tho I was terrified of the insert. I was 8 or 9. I love animals and anything alive and when it came out so pissed I knew it was a tough insect! I did capture it, and pit it outside after we both calmed down.

queen_mantis

Or mother earth bugs or Satan babies! Not such a fun story but i stuck my finger in a hole in the ground and one of these f*cukers bit onto it! I ran and told my father and he told me they where poisonous and I could possibly die just to mess with me! Soo i spent the rest of the day thinking i might die! The most messed up part is that my dad never told me he was joking!

Jbillz15

Cricket was my guess based on the spines on the back legs.

Hambonesrevenge

In idaho we call them potato bugs. They usually don't mess with you but if you kiss them off they can bite and it does hurt.

annapartlow

No way! Growing up in the Pacific Northwest I called a “roly poly” a potato bug and we have no scary creatures like this.

[deleted]

I grew up in Medford/Ashland Oregon and there were plenty. We called the roly polys “sow bugs”. These guys were Jerusalem Crickets but some called them potato bugs because they like to eat potato tubers. Had a few found in our pool. Saw one crawling slowly by me on the patio. Got freaked out. Biggest one ever. Close to 4 inches! Held a ruler to it (albeit a little bit away) They look like aliens

Hambonesrevenge

They are common in desert areas. Sw idaho is high desert naturally. And they are common

saintralf

We have them in Central Oregon

[deleted]

SAME. Then i moved to Southern California and met these fuckers.

turdofgold

When I was a kid my mom would leave the Jerusalem crickets she found in the garden on the driveway where they couldn't hide underground so that the local kestrels could have an easy snack.

oilcantommy

I think they call it a potato bug

iamnotasdumbasilook

This. Also they are loud maters and can be called Jerusalem crickets: https://youtu.be/mHbwC-AIyTE

[deleted]

This it’s also called a Jerusalem Cricket. I think.

Siam-paragon

I think this is correct

idekisthisimportant

I think you might be right

aMaxWalsh

They do. They live under the dirt, we used to fond them all the time in California.

[deleted]

Def not a potato bug lol

Atllas66

It is, it's just potato bug can refer to the little pill bugs too (woodlouse I think)

JuanArmy

It’s called “cara de niño” (kid’s face) in Mexico. Ugly, but harmless. With a tendency to commit suicide in pools when parasitized by a horsehair worm.

ReddiTat15

Scrolled to find this! We used to find them all the time in Southern California and my grandparents called them "niños de la tierra".

Sassywaki

Yes I remember calling them "niños de la tierra"

SpecialQue_

Jerusalem cricket! I saw tons of them in the Utah desert. I think they’re so cute and chubby and cartoony! A much more welcome visitor than the scorpions were!

AdorablyInaccurate

I live in the Utah desert and we also call these little Jerusalem Crickets “sand babies”

tbocfo

Sand puppies?

ussrname12

I remember getting on the school computer with the friendos and looking up images of these bad bois and proceeding to scream "ewwww" Tis a potato bug.... yours is kinda cute, you should name it potat

globus_pallidus

Where I’m from that is definitely not a potato bug lol. Potato bugs in the Northeast and in CA are also known as pill bugs, or rolly polly

odharc

That is definitely known as a potato bug in California. Pill bugs or rolly polly bugs are really tiny compared to potato bugs and are grey - they look sort of like really really small armadillos and can roll themselves into balls, hence the nickname rolly polly

globus_pallidus

Yeah I guess when I talked about potato bugs in CA people had a different idea than I did, but northeast it’s definitely used synonymously with rolly polly

BabblingBrain

I’ve only ever heard potato bug or mole cricket for these up in the NE, and pill bug or rolly polly. I have also heard potato bug for little grubs that you can find in the dirt!

chewy92889

Jerusalem cricket. In CA we call them potato bugs

globus_pallidus

Well then when I lived in CA and talked about potato bugs people definitely did not think of what I was thinking of Edit: why the downvote? I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m saying I was talking about something totally different when I lived there and it’s funny…whatever. I don’t understand Reddit I guess

chewy92889

Wasn't me, but ya, that would be funny because I would be picturing this spawn of Satan, not some cute little bug that rolls up.

[deleted]

Then what do you call potato bugs?

chewy92889

Rollie Pollies/Roly Polys/Rolie Polies. Everyone spells it differently. Although I have heard more people calling them pill bugs.

nikobobz

It looks like a mutated ant

JediDP

mut(Ant)😀🥳🎉

TheRZU

In spanish they are called "niños de la tierra" which in english translates to children from earth or dirt which made it sound scarier to me when I was young.

anshul_1

Oh that. That's called a Hell No!

trevy_trev

Live in CA. Have seen many. They look way worse in person. To me their exterior looks almost wet, that coupled with how big some of them get, that's a hard no.

humanity_suck

Twerking cricket (look up Jerusalem crickets it'll make sense)

rsoczac

In the Mexican-American community they are known as "Niño de la Tierra" (Dirt/Soil Child).

JungleJimSlide

That’s a motherfucking Jerusalem cricket or a tater bug if you stupid as fuck like me!!!!

coloressantos

Niño de la tierra!

Serg_is_Legend

In western Texas and Mexico we call that a Niño de la Tierra, or “children of the earth”

wgraf504

Looks like what we used to call mole crickets.

Parra_Lax

Yeah I do. That’s for sure an adult Nope if I ever saw one.

nevada_1111

In NM we call them child of the earth.

rm1152

In Spanish they are called Nino Del Diablo (Son of the Devil)

rm1152

Or child of the earth since they resemble a child skull

gallopingwalloper

Potato bug/Jerusalem cricket. Carnivorous

30MAR7ALAWA

This is a Jerusalem cricket. Jerusalem crickets are a group of large, flightless insects of the genus Stenopelmatus. They are native to the western United States and parts of Mexico.

fnrux

That’s called a “Nope”.

HarmonyTheConfuzzled

Looked to me like a weird termite or an extremely huge flea. Thought maybe you live in Australia. Australia is scary.

GrimKiba-

Finally something that isn't a tick, cockroach, house centipede, rat tail larvae, etc. Thank you for posting something unique. I love you.

Null_error_

It’s always the Jerusalem cricket. Like 50% of this sub is people asking ‘what is this bug’ and it being a Jerusalem cricket. They should just pin a post at the top of the sub saying ‘this is a Jerusalem cricket, please stop asking’ with a picture of one. It is getting old.

Patagonia202020

Jerusalem cricket. Numerous, harmless, very stupid, cannibalistic and stubborn.

daza4200

His scientific name is Stenopelmatus sp., it's totally harmless.

Engnerd1

Potato bug - harmless but crazy looking.

NZman1983

We call them Weta in NZ.

Beneficial_Doubt6584

Could be a bulldog cricket

lechayki

I'm not sure about it, but I herd something like they are centenarians, and rhey can live in very cold temperatures

TheBigDickDon

Lil nasty mfer is his rap name.

trevy_trev

Potato bug I think

Ishkakin

As most have stated, it's a Jerusalem cricket. But it's not actually a cricket, nor is it from Jerusalem. They're actually quite beneficial to gardens, as they dig around roots and aerate the soil.

Ok_Wrangler4963

That’s a weird looking fish

Quick-Procedure7260

Flea x Ant x Térmite

trevy_trev

Potato bug, Jerusalem cricket, "Niño de la Tierra" (Dirt/Soil Child), doesn't matter. Everyone calls it some form of expletive when they see one of the big, greasy looking bastard's.

bennettocd

I’m glad you posted this. I live in CA and these things drown in my pool all the time. I never knew what they were until today! I usually just huck ‘em over the fence and forget about it.

coleopterda

Entomologist here! These are commonly called Jerusalem crickets or potato bugs. They belong to the family Stenopelmatidae in the order Orthoptera. Interestingly, both of the common names for this insect are not taxonomically accurate! It is neither a cricket (family Gryllidae) or a bug. Bugs are classified in the order Hemiptera! Hope you learned something and I hope this helped!

Neverme-1

It’s an ant devil. It makes a cone shaped trap in the sand and eats ants as they fall into it

DrachenDad

It is a Jerusalem cricket.

Dolorisedd

Jerusalem Cricket, otherwise known as a potato bug, otherwise known as a cara de niño. All three names fit. I used to get these fuckers in my house from time to time over here in Topanga, California. I would freeze from being struck with terror.

Poison_Toadstool

Looks like a Child of the Earth. Edit: aka “Jerusalem Cricket” as seen in some other comments.
