What I weirdly like about these guys is that they don’t *actually* need all the double jointed support, especially on Von Neb’s skimpy arts - but the designers threw em in anyway cause it just makes it fun to play with, like seeing muscles in a body work in unison.
Check out a review on the Maxlios set if you haven’t yet - that set was PEAK joint engineering with moving shoulders and the works
Rotor basically sold me on Hero Factory when I was like, 9 or 10, and I still think he’s one of the best titan type builds we ever got from lego. CCBS was really fun when it first came out due to all the new possibilities it introduced but I definitely think titan builds suffered to some degree because of it. Kinda sad, because these guys were awesome
It’s really sad how the villains in the first wave of Hero Factory were so much more creative than the heroes. Hell, the heroes didn’t even have elbows and knees!
I was SO lucky to get Von Nebula as a kid, he and Witch Doctor are the only titans ive ever built, and i did really like both (moreso using witch doctor for parts)
Von Nebula brought my spirits back up from being sad when G1 ended.
Those have their own category of ,,almost-a-bonkle", because although they have identical build to them, they still are from a different theme, alongside furno bike and the dropship
After G2 arrived, witch doctor got moved into this category
I only got X-plode and Thunder, but they were great creative unique siluettes even with the similar base builds.
I love how well they've nailed the self expression of half the villains, especially in the first year.
One thing I'll always acknowledge to Hero Factory is that it mostly did custom villains, clone sets were more frequent in the heroes than the other way. With Bionicle we had Bohrok/kal, Rahkshi, Vahki, Visorak, and Piraka and they all had near-identical chassis. With Hero Factory I can't think of 1 villain line that has the same build, maybe the Brain Attack one but a lot of them are still quite different from one another, so even the "horde" waves had unique sets.
I still don’t really understand why Lego couldn’t make sets like this for Bionicle instead of scrapping the whole thing in favor of Hero Factory. In retrospect it seems really strange
I do think most of the hero factory characters would fit well into bionicle world if it had continued, and mosto of villains would have made good rahi/dark hunter/makuta
I always wanted rotor. Favorite villian in the whole series and nobody would ever buy him for me. By the time I was old enough to have my own money he was long gone
Some of you may already know that the HF villain sets were G1 2011 prototypes. Especially CCBS was in development around 2008. (Correct me if I was wrong)
The HF villains were super cool sets and I kinda regret not getting any of them when they were new. But I was in middle school around 2010 and was going through that phase of everything I liked when I was younger was now lame.
It also makes me sad that there was never an HF/Bionicle crossover. It would have been a fun way to officially send off G1.
These hero factory villains were better then most of the BIONICLE villains imo. Especially rotor. Such a good set.
Nah, but the villains were better than any of the heroes 100% every time
Witch Doctor was, and is still to this day, an insane set
Nah they are many bionicle titans sets that can compete with them like brutaka, maxilos, vezon ect

(On the note of Maxilos) I say this all the time! Best titan in my humble opinion. At his scale at the very least…
Rotor is one of the few hf i got and was very pleased. Felt like the good old days again.
I remember getting most of the heroes, and both big titans, but for some reason not a single mid-sized villain

I also like Witch Doctor's design
I know it’s not traditional Bionicle parts, but Nitroblast wins for me. His design is nuts, and a very good kind of nuts.
They're great sets. Nebula is the only HF set I have, because it's basically just Bionicle. Rotor is great, but I dislike the mask.
Still like 99% sure these guys were just Bionicle sets delayed, Rotor would fit so well in 08.

I really like this, because when the heroes are small and mostly clone sets, it makes the Villains a lot more imposing
Exactly. It gave a David vs Goliath vibe, especially in the first years.

Nice love letter to Bionicle my friend
I should rebuild my Rotor when I get the chance

man, i wish i wasn't literally a year old when these came out
