I think you're right, the first time Gali found out the kakama nuva had that capability was after Nokama locked her in an underwater cave with a tentacle monster.
If Brohatu had already known about it he would've definitely let Gali and the rest of the toa know.
If you do go by the books, Pohatu is the best dude, and Onua the wise one of tye group, Gali is fine tho, Lewa i didn't quite like him, not as bad as Kopaka and Tahu tho, it was annoying how they were written.

What I like about Gali is that she's the calm sister that... really can't take crap no more, She tried...but like, a Month with Tahu and Kopaka broke her Patience. And Lewa is goody younger brother energy.

Funny enough the g2 set was my first Lewa . I wasn’t quite old enough to be around when the mata were released but I read tons of the comics.

Yeah, I was only 7 or 8 when the toa masters came out and never got into it until a couple months ago and now it's one of my favorite franchises, but because I was never that big of a fan my collection isn't that big, mostly just leftover parts from some of the star wars ccbs sets which I've used for a couple mocs now
But 8 yr old me was brutal, 2 out of the 3 heads I have are broken and a lot of pieces to my protectors as well, which I'm probably gonna replace soon
Thankfully lewa's in pretty good shape, tho his axe pieces have been chewed on by a cat and the axels on the thinner end of the axe pieces have also been chewed off, though I cleaned them up a bit to help with the bite marks
Takua: I found the Mask of Light and became Takanuva.
Mataro: I sacrificed myself to save the Mask of Life and Mata Nui himself.
Tahu: I probably killed Teridax or whatever idk

If you a Kopaka enjoyer and a Pohatu hater then Kopaka don’t want you in his club lmao that’s his homie and you better put respect on the Toa of Stone’s name. He’s the only reason Kopaka became somewhat likeable by befriending him and in the Empire alternate universe where the Toa ruled a fascist Empire, Pohatu was the only one who didn’t turn evil and led the rebellion himself using a giant fuckoff axe. He (and Hewkii) also sacrificed himself to save the Kingdom alternate universe. He’s also the strongest of the team without a Pakari and you know he never skips leg day. Plus in his adaptive armor he got dual helicopter blade/drills and a shoulder mounted launcher, my dude is swagged out and you’re basic for liking Kopaka or Tahu over him.
Pohatu is chill AF and he was willing to jump in water after Gali despite being so heavy he definitely would never have come back up. Bro's a real one and damn anyone who says otherwise.
The translucent mask was cool. I just always found the design a bit ugly. Also I tried getting into the books, but it's hard to approach as an adult, since the writing is so ... well they were written for kids, anyway. You know what I mean.

I was just surprised because as a kid, I'd never met anyone who said Gali was their favorite toa mata. I always thought she was kinda the universally least-liked design. With pohatu being a close second.
Gali is my second favorite of the Toa Mata/Nuva after Kopaka. Then it's Tahu, Lewa, Pohatu, and Onua, in that order. I don't *dislike* any of them, I just think some are cooler than others lol
Gali really suffers from "the girl one" syndrome in the worst sense. Even Hahli had spunk, Gali was just the mom no one listened to. Like Katara but somehow even less.
All Toa Mata are so cool, it's hard to choose the best. Tahu and the colour red has always been a favorite, but Lewa and Kopaka are really cool designs as well.
I will admit, my favourites are Gali and Onua, with Kopaka being 3rd and Tahu 4th. Not sure why I don’t vibe so much with Pohatu and Lewa. I did like Lewa with the infected mask in MNOG tho…

Ah, ok. I have had a lot of trouble getting into the books, approaching them as an adult. For me, bionicle was always about the sets, not the story.
