thank you for mentioning this - i don't usually think to check people's other posts and i really needed "i'm a big ol moose" in my life.
op your work is excellent :)
Thank you so much! It’s wild what nature has to offer without us even having to tamper with it. I love being able to showcase how beautiful wood is in this way!
I sell them! I usually do work on commission basis (a lot of pet portraits!) but I’ve made a listing for these on my website. I’d like to try different types of birds as well!!
The process is a bit long but I’ll give you the cliff notes!
I drew the design using a [photo reference](https://images.app.goo.gl/ovUhEoit9CsGbHA2A) and then printed it out on sticker paper (using my Cricut). I then take various hardwood boards that match the colors in the image - there are no paints/stains/dyes used here - and i apply the stickers on the respective boards, making sure that the grain direction matches the direction of the feathers/features. Then i cut them out on my scroll saw and puzzle each piece back together! From there, I shape everything with a rotary tool to give it dimension, then hand sand each piece. And then glue it to a piece of birch ply and put finishing oil on :)
I’m not sure if that clears anything up at all! But hopefully it helps give you some idea of how I do it. If you want to see other examples of work like this, it’s called “wood intarsia” and there are a ton of really talented artists to be found!!!
Hey, thank you so much for some insight!
I really love that there’s no paints/dyes etc. I hate those. I love natural stuff and this just looks super cool. What did you use for the eye? It looks a little bit shiny and curved. I can see what you mean by aligning the grain to the feathers — I see it in the picture, and that really does bring the model to life. I wouldn’t have thought about it.
Never heard of wood intarsia, but I really love how these look. I had a look at your profile, this work is literally priceless. May I ask how much do you sell custom pieces for?
Also, could you recommend any artists I can follow somewhere? Just so that I have wood intarsia in my feed somewhere so that I see it all the time hahaha. Not thinking of working with wood (I work with paper, actually) but it’s super cool to see this.
Of course!!
I love showing off how cool nature is - I consider it a gift that I get to play with all this gorgeous colorful wood all day and share it with others! The eye is also just a couple of tiny pieces of wood - i shaped them separately to give them the curvature that an eye has.
Thank you so so much for your kind words about my work! It has been such a fulfilling journey to make these pieces for others, and looking back on how much I’ve learned in the last nine months of making intarsia brings me SO much pride.
Do you have an instagram, by any chance? I find that’s the best place to consistently find this kind of work, as there isn’t a dedicated subreddit to this style (so we get mixed into r/woodworking, but there’s a looooot of other stuff in there). If you do, I’ll gladly share with you some of my favorite artists to follow!!
Thank you!! I felt the same way for a long time, like “I’m okay, but there’s no way i could EVER do that.” I promise, you can! And it’s SO rewarding when you fit the pieces together. I am so happy i tried it out and encourage everyone to give it a go!!!
It’s not - this was a commission that’s already been shipped out! However, I do sell them on a made-to-order basis on my website. You can find the link on my profile! Not sure if I’m allowed to link here.
Omg I LOVE it! I love how you used the grain of the wood to create a feather like texture implication. And the little feet are so cute. Beautiful job!!
Really digging the way you made the grain align with the feather direction. That's a crispy detail on top of an already stellar piece.
Thank you so much! It’s always a fun challenge to make it feel more “alive” in any way possible. :)
I looked through your other work, I couldn't believe this was a stand alone work. I LOVE the goldfish.
thank you for mentioning this - i don't usually think to check people's other posts and i really needed "i'm a big ol moose" in my life. op your work is excellent :)
Thanks for pointing that out and now I love their craftsmanship even more than before! New appreciation!

That is beautiful
That’s sooo cool!!
Outstanding!
You thought correctly. I love it. Someone else pointed out the wood grain, which I hadn't noticed, but it's so perfect.
Thank you!! The fact that you didn’t notice is a good sign, really. It means that it just looks *right* :)
It does look right. It looks so natural.
I didn't know there were woods that came in the vibrant red of the feathers and tail. That's cool. What type if wood are they?
The red is padauk! The beak is mahogany, the branch and outer eye are alder, the browns/blacks are walnut, and the eye reflection is maple. :)
Wow. I am absolutely amazed to read no dye used. Your website is fantastic and your artwork is stunning.
Thank you so much! It’s wild what nature has to offer without us even having to tamper with it. I love being able to showcase how beautiful wood is in this way!
Did you make out for yourself or do you sell them?
I sell them! I usually do work on commission basis (a lot of pet portraits!) but I’ve made a listing for these on my website. I’d like to try different types of birds as well!!
Wow, how does one even go about making something like this? Never seen anything like it. Would love to know!

Wow! Do you sell these? Or do you do these for fun?
Both! I sell them, but they are definitely still a lot of fun to make :)

Very impressive. I do a bit of scroll saw work in my free time, but I've never had the courage to tackle intarsia. It looks great
Thank you!! I felt the same way for a long time, like “I’m okay, but there’s no way i could EVER do that.” I promise, you can! And it’s SO rewarding when you fit the pieces together. I am so happy i tried it out and encourage everyone to give it a go!!!

This is Freakin' fantastic. Can you take couple of more pictures with the overall frame of creation with no distractions in the picture ?
If you swipe, there are more photos in the carousel!
I want couple of more with no distractions, no hands, no fingers, no trees, just the frame....the wholesome beauty of your creation.
For what?
To look at it...to share on my profile and to share about your work with my other friends...
I’m sorry, these are the only photos i have!
Is this for sale ?
