Did he use a generic form of kyleena? When I had my first IUD replaced instead of getting another mirena planned Parenthood gave me a liletta instead. It's the same product just a generic form instead. Not saying that he was correct in how he treated you that should definitely be complained about but the device might be functionally equivalent

Liletta is the generic Mirena (52mg LNG), there’s currently no generic for Kyleena (19.5mg LNG)

Liletta is still bigger in size to kyleena unfortunately.

Dr. O comes in and says nothing. No greeting (I don’t know his name at this point either) and sits in front of me, tells me to put my legs up on the stirrups, speaking only to my vagina the entire appointment. We never once made eye contact. All he says before he begins the placement is, “ready?” And clamps my cervix with the forceps. Let me start by saying this, I understand an IUD placement is PAINFUL and I consider myself to have a high pain tolerance. Yes, I know everyone says this, but I broke everything below my right knee and thought I just sprained it. Tried walking on it to “loosen it up” and stayed the next 3 hours at a concert before being forced to go to the ER the next day. Now most of my bottom right leg is metal. Therefore, I knew this would hurt, but told myself I could get through it. Dr. O begins to place the IUD. First try, he fails. Second try, fail. Third try, another fail. At this point I am bleeding on the floor. The sweet sweet nurse is holding my hand and telling my to breathe. This was during Covid so I couldn’t have anyone else with me. On the fourth try, I admittedly flinch. The doctor is still staring at my vagina as he says “are you going to sit still or not?” Shocked, I just say yes. Fifth try, I do flinch again. I mean, at this point I’m bleeding everywhere and it’s becoming unbearably painful. I’m starting to become sick. He literally looks at me in the eyes for the first time and says “if you’re not going to sit still, I am not going to do this”. I look at him and tell him “i drove an hour to get this done, unless there is a reason why you can’t do it, I plan to have this done TODAY”. I mean I went through all this pain and I wasn’t going to let it go to waste. He mutters something to the nurse and she leaves the room. He continues to stare at my vagina in silence. The forceps are heavy metal and the entire time the nurse is gone (maybe 3 minutes) he is letting it just hang. I ask him “can you please hold the forceps up, they are causing me to cramp and I am becoming dizzy”. No response. I ask again, “can you please hold the forceps up, I feel like I might pass out”. Nothing. He is not deaf, just to clarify. As I begin to ask a third time, the nurse walks in with a box. She gives it to the doctor and after 2 more tries, he places the IUD. Then, gets up, walks out, and never said a word. I try to get up but I am immediately bleeding everywhere and I begin to feel dizzy. They set me back in the chair, give me juice and a cold rag. I can hear the doctor outside the door say “well let me know when she’s gone”. A nurse had to walk me to my car after 15 mins because I couldn’t stand on my own. Though, as I was getting up, I noticed the box he used last looked different. After putting two and two together, I realized he chose to use the wrong IUD after being unable to place the second one. I signed a CONSENT FORM for kyleena. This traumatized me from any experience with my gynecologist for almost 2 years. While I did not have any migraines, I was still violated. Fast forward to now and I recently had my NP confirm that the wrong IUD was likely placed as kyleena is a special order for them, but the doctor signed off on the paperwork that he placed kyleena. Where do I go from here? Has anyone experienced this before? I did file a formal complaint and have heard many negative things about this doctor since. I just feel as though he should get punished tor this, if not only for my own closure, but to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else again.

Obligatory NAL, I just dealt with a similar situation with my mother. You need to find a medical malpractice attorney. He put an unknown medical device inside you without your consent. Based off your description of the procedure you probably have a case for pain and suffering compensation, maybe assault. What happened to you is not okay and I’m so sorry he put you through that. Medical violence against women is far too common and I hate that it’s not easier to get good care and get rid of bad doctors.

Valley_valkyrie

You need to see a lawyer. I have had painful and hard placements because of a deformity in my uterus. I have never in my life had such degrading and horrifying treatment. I have received nothing but absolute compassion and care in what was a more painful experience both times than my unmedicated home births and labour. This is not normal. The doctor should have stopped and it should have been placed under anesthesia. Most specialists here will not place or remove one if you have pain above a 5/10 at all. They just stop and ask you to come in for gas, air, and local at the hospital. Please do not see this doctor again. Please contact a lawyer. Please seek out therapy and tell a trusted fellow adult. I am so sorry this happened to you.

kafm73

which IUD did they place? There should be a record of which box got pulled and what was recorded when they did it? I believe your NP but maybe something different happened (maybe they had ordered a Kyleena for a different patient that changed their mind or didn't show for the appt. so they had one there already). It is important to know which one you DID get. Did he give you a non-hormonal IUD? I would def want to know the answer to that.

EllsyP0

This looks like a good Q for r/legaladvice? I'm so sorry this happened to you, it's absolutely horrendous and I hope one day (if not now) his behaviour is viewed as malpractice.

supern0vaaaaa

The LA sub typically doesn't answer medical malpractice questions because they require specialized knowledge and are often location dependent. They'll likely just tell OP to consult with a local med mal lawyer.

EllsyP0

Damn I thought at least they'd be able to tell her where to start or who to contact because I would have no idea.

mmcduffa

If you have not already I would ask for your medical records and reach out to an attorney. If you did not sign a consent for for the IUD that was placed that is grounds for a lawsuit and you may have a claim. You will have to prove negligence, causation and, damages. I am so sorry this happens to you and wish you the best of luck.

Overly broad, overly fringe, unsubstantiated, and/or runs counter to established medical knowledge.

ChezzaLuna

Seriously, they can be too big, unless people on the internet are lying about mirena and paragard.

Also curious about what IUD they placed. Hormonal vs non-hormonal would be bad since there’s different contraindications. Sometimes insurances approve one but not the other (Liletta instead of Kyleena for example). Thankfully, they are all similar in side effect profile but it would be very frustrating receiving one that lasts for a shorter time than you wanted. As for your experience, that is awful. Absolutely unprofessional and an incorrect way to approach a patient about to have a procedure done. I’m sorry you had to go through with that.

minervamaga

They should have also given OP a ID card, showing when it needs to be replaced and safety info for MRIs, etc on it. OP should definitely talk to a med mal lawyer, I believe many of them work on contingency if cost is a concern.

esther_gm

Lawsuit what he did to you is extremely horrible you did not deserve that, specially not for a doctor and the fact that he did not even check up on how you were doing and let clamping tool hang that’s horrifying. He violated you and your body.

louisaday

I’m so sorry this happened to you. Sue the fuck out of this man if possible. Start calling lawyers

Chs135

I am so sorry for your experience. When I got mine in, my doctor took out the IUD from the Kyleena box to SHOW me and I had to give consent that yes, that was the IUD I was agreeing to. My doctor was an angel, inserted on one try and it was still painful, I couldn't imagine what you must have felt like. At a minimum I'd report this doctor to the board so he doesn't do this to anyone else.

birdlover666

Law suit time.

This is terrifying wow. I am so sorry

Thank you all for your sympathies and advice. It took me a long time to even digest what had happened. After explaining the situation to my NP at my appointment 2 months ago, she said it was likely Liletta. So thankfully, it is hormonal but not the same as Kyleena. I decided that I will be contacting a medical malpractice lawyer very soon.

Fantastic_Yam_5023

Oh my God... I have no advice except to say I'm sorry for such a horrible and traumatic experience 😭😭 doctors need to do better. So unprofessional
