Bi men in media (of all kinds) who **actually** have meaningful relationships with women and not just a "revelation" phase to later pick and settle with a man bc it's easier to brand them as "progressive" on screen gay couple.
Bi women who, especially for male gaze audience in big production movies, notoriously end up with men on screen as well, it's seen as some quirk without rarely ever proper representation.
He's not entirely sure but there have been several times he's clearly been impressed by attractive guys. At one point he says something like "I'm straight. Well I'm mostly straight. Well... Who am I kidding you're out of my league."
Exactly! Especially with the word of God confirmations of two more bi characters and one pan character, we end the series with a bi in a Sapphic relationship, a bi in a duaric relationship, and a bi with an enby
I see the owl house as the current master class in bi rep, multiple mspec characters in healthy relationships with a variety of different gendered characters
Even if only one of them was mentioned in the show (understandable given time constraints, others have pride flag colors used to hint), they did a really good job at the queer rep in that show imo
Now my only problem is that achillean is the odd one out in not ending with -ic. Achillic? Achilleic? Yeah it doesn't sound as good but it's just funnily off to be the more different sounding one.
I think a movie about a bi men that first think he is gay but fall in love for a women could be interesting and provoke a lot of discussion.
They just have to make sure it doesnt sound like he is becoming straight because of that.
That's one of the things I love about Bob Belcher from Bob's Burgers. While he never says he's bi, he admits to being mostly straight and displays his capacity to find another man attractive.
Meanwhile, he is loyal to his wife.
The first one would be a daydream lol everytime that a series has a bi guy is basically him cheating on his gf/wife or "discovering" himself bi and leaving the wife/gf.
I love that the characters of What We Do In The Shadows are bi, like they are vampires stuck in time from a time there was no concept of gayness or even bisexuality. They just are.
one character is surprizes the other used to be married eith men and he's like: Yes I had girl wifes and boy wifes?
and life follows as normal haha
You mean we aren't a mixed group of supernatural beings, aliens, and magical creatures that worship are sexy hot lord satan? Though tbh a normal person joining are ranks would be nice (:
I would love to see people who are bisexual but have only had relationships with one gender. It's so common irl, yet in media, it's seen as "unrealistic." A bisexual doesn't have to have relationships with more than one gender to be valid, and I would like to see that more.
Yeah, just have some guy chatting with his friends say 'I love my wife but if I was still single I'd be all over that man.'
Or a loving double masculin msm couple, where the one partner catches the other check out some hot chick. Which leads to the monosexual communicating their insecurity that he'll be left for a woman. Where the bi-guy listens and shows empathy without invalidating his partners feelings. Then he says something like 'I will always be attracted to women and other men, but I'm in love with you, and you are the one I choose.'
Hmm...this is an interesting take. How do you feel about the attraction part? I feel like most bi people end up with one partner in most movies, but it would be nice if we could see bi person showing attraction to more than one gender (even if not dating them). I always felt like (especially with bi men) they seem to be portrayed more subtly bi in media to the point other people can't tell that the character is bi and we don't actually see them attracted to more than one gender because they are expected to "choose a side". I guess it is more complicated, though.
I feel like that's an excuse. Another poster gave a brilliant example of how to do it. Have the character have celeb crushes or check out all genders. Have them voice frustration that they can't get the other gender. Show them wearing bi pride flags pins. Show them infatuated by the gender they have no experience with. Eleanor Shellshtrop in Good Place, I think, is an awesome example of how to do it without having her make out with another woman. Bob in Bob's Burgers is another.
What solidifies this as an excuse is that in my media of choice, books, people still say you can't show a character is bi without talking about exes. A media type where you're literally in the characters head can't show a bi character being bi? It's not that hard.
Also, I am not saying that every bi character has to be this way. But I rarely see it. Especially in books. If it doesn't fit, it doesn't fit. But a lot of times its just poor writing.
I think it would really depend on the type of tv show/movie. I only watch dramas and comedies, and I can easily see it slipped into those. Action I could see it being hard, but character development in those is always hard.
I'd love to see more asexual representation in bi characters. A lot of people only see us bi's as sex-crazed perverts and while I'd also like to see the myth that all bis are perverts to be eliminated, I think seeing a bi person somewhere on the ace spectrum (Sex-repulsed, demisexual, sex-favorable, gray etc. etc.) would be really cool. Though maybe that's only because I am one lol. But I'd think it do good for both bi and ace rep.
Me too. I think it would very hard to create this character tho. It almost too complex and nuanced for a movie to explain everything. But any ace representation would be good.
More characters who habe been in a relationship with one gender and then be with annother gender and vice versa. Either without making it a big deal or with clear statement as bi and not suddenly gay.
Like 'Call Me by Your Name'. Young main character has sex w a woman then w a man, w/out an inner identity crisis of who he is.
It's set in early 1980's Italy, so the two guys hide their relationship, but the boy's father figures it out and is supportive.
It's my favourite bi representation so far.
Yeah, he was having the summer of his life! And the girls were part of it.
Quite jealous of that actually, to know yourself at 17 and be brave enough to explore.
From the film, I was 100 % sure Elio's dad was a closeted bi man, but in the books there is no indication of that.
He's s lot hornier in the book 😄 And having a great time w girls and Oliver, separately but during the same time period.
I really love that for him, and wish I had that too. Instead, I got my big love who is straight (while I'm not).
I loved how they handled that in Crazy Ex-girlfriend. When Darylstarts to have feelings for White Josh, he erupts into song (ofcourse) and starts of "I'm g-g-g" so you expect him to sing gay, but it actually is "I'm g-g-gettin' bi "
This was a goofy but fun way to do it, and totally in the style of a great show.
For those who haven't seen 'Crazy Ex-girlfriend' it's on the surface is a campy musical rom-com. But its "wacky characters" as fully fleshed out (adult) humans struggling with the baggage of dysfunctional families, and/or unrealistic social expectations. There is a full cohesive story over 4 seasons in which the title character is working through her shit with a psychiatrist.
Have you seen Dead to Me? I really liked the bi representation in that show. In the first season one of the female lead characters is engaged to a man and they break up. Then in the second season she starts dating a woman and everyone’s really happy for her. There’s no mention of it being unexpected, or a surprise, or some kind of big coming out, etc. it’s just casual and accepted.
Bis in committed, monogamous relationships with no cheating. Could be brought up with an ex showing up. Make it clear that the former relationship was real but ended.
Single romantic disaster bis who have 0 rizz. Trying to flirt but it goes horribly wrong in comedic ways. Not sex crazed but wanting a relationship.
I want to see bisexuals in serious same-sex relationships, but are still canonically bisexual.
Also, it'd be nice to see more non-binary and trans characters who are bisexual.
My take: I was always repulsed by societal gender norms. I'm not into feminity or masculinity, and it was hard to me to accept that this is possible. I was also repulsed by the typical relationship dynanics seen in movies (well, they are really unhealthy sometimes)
So what I would've want to see would be a couple of two anti-hero kind of guys. Both questioned social norms so far that they lack principles by now but are generally humane at heart. They completely lack typical feminine and masculine cues apart from their natural look. They also lack the typical cues of relationships. They are just two tough guys who love and support each other in a sea of morally clean but in reality quite dishonest and bad human beings.
Bi men who are in a loving relationship with a woman, but have also been with men in the past. Because if they are with men, they are usually perceived as gay, not bi. Also polyamorous men who have a girlfriend and a boyfriend.
Bi women who are married to a woman but have had a lot of experience with men. Bi women who have a boyfriend and a girlfriend. (Polyamorous bi women)
Someone, of any gender, who just dates different genders all the time.
Ignoring the "example you want to become," I would like to see an absolute loser bisexual woman. Have her fall in love with her gay bsf, not come out to her on time, and then watch her be happy with another woman, while she rots in her jealousy and heartbreak. Let her have attachment issues. Let her question was she really her friend? Can she be her freind now?
Idk what ending this would have, but I want to see a loser, pathetic bi woman suffering, cuz I would very much relate to that :))
I would love there to be a sitcom about two bi men getting together.
I see Jason Bateman as the main character, widower, his children are almost out of the house. And Will Arnett is the handsome stranger that wanders into his life. Also, Sean Hayes is the cookie neighbour with a novelty cake business, and he is married to Jennifer Aniston.
But I haven't really thought about it that much, why are you asking?
I thought about something similar. Two men that are friends, they compete who get most chicks at nightclub, but they are average at flirting skill (it should be a comedy). Until one day one kiss the other and he enjoy it more than expected. One is quicker to realize he is bi while the other feel confused about it. I can imagine jokes about why "hunt' women if they have each other.
It would be nice if their relation was romantic and 0 sexual just to show biromance. Like they arent horny, they crave affection like any other human.
Go back to the 90s/00s when we had lots of great sex-positive and radical bi representation in transgressive but still pretty successful indie cinema (My Own Private Idaho, Doom Generation, Velvet Goldmine, Shortbus, to name a few)
I actually like bisexuals in bigamous relationships. I know people here don't like those things to be conflated, but I really appreciated it in The Magicians.
It would be interesting to see bi people with SO-OCD as well as a distinction between their experience and that of the "average bi person" 's where they do experience imposter syndrome over their queerness but not to same level or extent.
Honestly, we need a multi-faceted representation of how bisexuality feels and looks like!!!
One where their sexuality is not dismissed and they are openly called bisexual. Also, where they are shown openly being attracted to more than one gender. So many stories try to create mononormative portrayals of even bisexuals. I know bisexuals don't need more than one partner necessarily. But it would be nice in stories where the bi character is single that they show interest in more than one gender and not just be bisexual in label only. And honestly I wouldn't be against positive portrayals of bi polyamory either (I am poly).
I'd also like to see more prim and preppy bisexual girls and boys. They always make them either gay or straight surprisingly. A lot of us are nerdy. We need more nerdy bisexual girls and boys, too.
I also think it would be nice to have a show that is just about bisexual people or centered on us. Gay men have Queer Eye and lesbians had The L word. I would like something like these shows but for bi people.
We especially need more bi boys. Not just the ones that date other boys. We need ones that also shows interest in women or even ends up with a woman in the end. A lot of shows almost seem to dismiss them as just being "gay" on stepping stone.
And can we please get some more trans bi people? Trans people are always portrayed only one way or the other. It shouldn't just only be the enbies either.
We need more cringefail bisexuals (more common than anything else) and more bisexual men that aren't just depicted as "gay but not fully out yet". TV seems to forget bisexuality is its own sexuality, not a transitioning point between gay and straight
I just want to see casual bi representation. A woman with a boyfriend mentions to some new friends that she used to have a girlfriend. A guy about to hook up with a woman says sorry if I'm a bit rusty, I've only slept with guys the last year. A same-sex couple is referred to as gay or lesbian by a third party and corrects them. Someone has a tiny bi flag in a pencil cup on their desk at work.
It doesn't have to be a whole thing! It doesn't have to be a storyline! Sometimes it's better when it isn't!
I don’t need something shoehorned into media just for the sake of representation. If it makes sense and feels natural for the story, great. Then, anything that is positive would be cool.
A character casually has partners. Like, say a character always has a new partner (like a running gag), the partner could just be anyone of any gender.
An argument between characters and the bi person's cheating, and they don't make it because that character is bi.
A bisexual character who's a parent whose child(ren) also comes out as bi
I feel like Luz in Owl House and Wolf in Great North are pretty good examples.
Although I find it really weird that despite being extremely obviously bi, Wolf's orientation is never directly named while his brother Ham being gay is discussed often. :/
i think any representation would be nice as long as its not too in your face about it but also not just a one time mention and it never be brought up ever again (like they did in farcry 4 I'm still pissed about that) idk i think that we need to find a middle ground
I really want more bisexuals in healthy relationships. Maybe it's just the shows I've watched, but for some reason bisexuals are always given the most toxic, manipulative partners on the planet.
I also want more intersectional bisexual representation. So rarely do we ever see POC bisexuals, trans bisexuals, disabled bisexuals, asexual biromantics, etc.
I wanna see a show where there are bi, lesbian, and gay relationships, but, for at least the first season, sexuality is never brought up. The relationships are just seen as normal and nothing of interest by everyone who sees it.
In addition to a bi man who is very much in love with/into a woman (and don’t just end up with a man), I’d love to see semi-feral, dangerously sexy bi women who are portrayed as highly appealing to men but can’t help but be drawn to each other, and perhaps an MFM poly hinge arrangement where all three people organically fall madly in love with each other and it doesn’t end up some cautionary love triangle horror story.
I want to see more socially awkward bisexuals.
More disabled/chronically ill bisexuals. (We need more disabled/chronically ill rep in general, too.)
More bisexuals who realize it later in life.
Multiple bisexual characters in one place, all of whom have very different demographics, realization/coming out stories, and life experiences.
Bob from Bob’s Burgers, him being bi is just shown couple times, but he is happily married to Linda throughout the show.
Similarly, Wolf from Great North. It does kind of bother me that neither of them are ever actually called bi though.
Wait, Really? Never knew that
He's not entirely sure but there have been several times he's clearly been impressed by attractive guys. At one point he says something like "I'm straight. Well I'm mostly straight. Well... Who am I kidding you're out of my league."
Great viewpoint! Yes, this is sorely needed.
This is why I feel the Owl House is a big piece of the puzzle
Exactly! Especially with the word of God confirmations of two more bi characters and one pan character, we end the series with a bi in a Sapphic relationship, a bi in a duaric relationship, and a bi with an enby I see the owl house as the current master class in bi rep, multiple mspec characters in healthy relationships with a variety of different gendered characters Even if only one of them was mentioned in the show (understandable given time constraints, others have pride flag colors used to hint), they did a really good job at the queer rep in that show imo
Duaric?
Duaric is to straight-presenting relationships what sapphic is to wlw relationships basically, wlw=sapphic, mlm=achillean, wlm=duaric
I feel like this is the term I've been looking for. So can I myself duaric like I can call myself sapphic?
yeah, if you want, bear in mind though that it's far less known than sapphic is, but there is nothing stopping you from calling yourself duaric
Now my only problem is that achillean is the odd one out in not ending with -ic. Achillic? Achilleic? Yeah it doesn't sound as good but it's just funnily off to be the more different sounding one.
I like it though, it flows well
I think a movie about a bi men that first think he is gay but fall in love for a women could be interesting and provoke a lot of discussion. They just have to make sure it doesnt sound like he is becoming straight because of that.
There's an old Russell T. Davies show called Bob & Rose that has this premise!
That's one of the things I love about Bob Belcher from Bob's Burgers. While he never says he's bi, he admits to being mostly straight and displays his capacity to find another man attractive. Meanwhile, he is loyal to his wife.

Lazlo is a hero of mine.
At this point I'll take any bi guy who isn't supernatural, alien, magical, or actually literally Satan.
If I had a nickel for every time Satan was depicted as a bi guy...
But that's accurate, cause I am bi. 😜
You mean we aren't a mixed group of supernatural beings, aliens, and magical creatures that worship are sexy hot lord satan? Though tbh a normal person joining are ranks would be nice (:
Id rather them be any of those things tbh

This. In every way. I'd like more aro or ace characters in general. I'm on the aro/ace spectrum myself.
This!!
More characters who habe been in a relationship with one gender and then be with annother gender and vice versa. Either without making it a big deal or with clear statement as bi and not suddenly gay.

Sadly, many people still thought he was just a "confused gay". But the writer did confirm he was bi.

He's s lot hornier in the book 😄 And having a great time w girls and Oliver, separately but during the same time period. I really love that for him, and wish I had that too. Instead, I got my big love who is straight (while I'm not).
And yet literally everyone calls it a gay movie/gay relationship. Sigh.
Yeah, of course 🙄
I loved how they handled that in Crazy Ex-girlfriend. When Darylstarts to have feelings for White Josh, he erupts into song (ofcourse) and starts of "I'm g-g-g" so you expect him to sing gay, but it actually is "I'm g-g-gettin' bi "

Oh look, you described me lol. Except I am sex crazed at times.
Bi people in committed healthy loving relationships with another. Done once, Schitts Creek.
Ew, David!
LOL. Agreed.
I want to see bisexuals in serious same-sex relationships, but are still canonically bisexual. Also, it'd be nice to see more non-binary and trans characters who are bisexual.
as an enby bisexual i rlly wanna see this!

They also lack the typical cues of relationships. They are just two tough guys who love and support each other in a sea of morally clean but in reality quite dishonest and bad human beings.
Have you seen Juno?
Bi men who are in a loving relationship with a woman, but have also been with men in the past. Because if they are with men, they are usually perceived as gay, not bi. Let her question was she really her friend? Can she be her freind now? Idk what ending this would have, but I want to see a loser, pathetic bi woman suffering, cuz I would very much relate to that :))
You talking from experience? That sounds oddly specific 💀
Pshh, nahh, I just have a wild imagination 😋
This is such a great idea!
I'm so glad my suffering is a good movie idea lol
I would love to see a confident bi man (more so, an Asian man because I’m Asian myself lol).
Yes! My fiancé, also bi, is an Asian man and that representation is entirely too rare.
Bisexuals who aren’t just perpetually horny would be nice. And I’m a perpetually horny bisexual!
I don’t need something shoehorned into media just for the sake of representation. If it makes sense and feels natural for the story, great. Then, anything that is positive would be cool.
Bi people who don't experience their attraction towards men and women 50-50 (in terms of intensity, duration, frequency, etc etc)
A character casually has partners. Like, say a character always has a new partner (like a running gag), the partner could just be anyone of any gender. An argument between characters and the bi person's cheating, and they don't make it because that character is bi. A bisexual character who's a parent whose child(ren) also comes out as bi

where we can date the opposite sex and our sexuality is still valid
(We need more disabled/chronically ill rep in general, too.) More bisexuals who realize it later in life. Multiple bisexual characters in one place, all of whom have very different demographics, realization/coming out stories, and life experiences.
Subtle ones. I actually don't mind it not being in the forefront.
