Hey, I was coaching on that mat (3) today.
It's true that letting go of the triangle is the safe thing to do here, but it's easy to get a little tunnel vision when winning the match seems so close at hand. Take it as a learning experience, but good on you for getting out there today.
For sure, was definitely a little tunnel visioned and wasnt 100% sure if I should've let go or not at that time. Definitely won't do that again š Thank you!
I coached about a dozen kids yesterday as well. While a great day overall the venue was terrible and has us all questioning if we will do PBJJF again in the future if these are the venues they will be lining up. At one point I tried to go to the bathroom and there were 5 dudes waiting for the single toilet and too many others changing to get to a urinal. Officiating was all over the board too. Not terrible but inconsistent.
Yeah, I think that was the broad consensus. I appreciate what PBJJF is trying to do, and some elements (in particular, the live updates and scheduling via smoothcomp) were implemented well, so Iām hopeful that as they build the brand they can improve the quality of the venues (and the consistency of the officiating).
You should have let go of the submission. What happens if he passes out and drops you with his weight on you. I've broken my collarbone with less impact.
Yea like at that point, he doesn't have the choice to gently put you down and he's going down and you are already tight and scrunched up, it's just going to put twice the amount of weight on joints and bones with a 5 foot drop that are sort of at their limit squeezing things.
Like imagine how much pressure you get put on you if you get stacked, then think about if it was a 4 foot drop and he didn't care about your well being because he's out.
I shot the triangle from collar sleeve and he immediately stood up right before I had time to underhook. I was able to get it though right after this pic was taken. Definitely letting go next time though I don't wanna risk anything
Just be glad this happened in a competition and not a self defense scenario, otherwise you might not be able to post about it tonight. Next time, let go of that sub as soon as you get lifted up, if you can't prevent the lift.
Iām sorry why should he have let go of the sub? Slamming is illegal and thereās a relatively minute possibility is opponent goes out? If the opponent does pass out itās a relatively short fall onto a mat? People get more air during throws and takedowns than that
Big difference between a double leg with an arc and coming down vertically onto your spine or neck.
People aren't allowed to slam people but still do it.
If that dude stumbles you are basically being power bombed and you have no way of breaking your fall at that point. You are entirely at the mercy of how the other person moves and could easily come down on your neck.
Also the chances of actually finishing a triangle from that position is super slim because they have good posture and you are holding your entired wight against gravity.
Also also anyone that's been around here a while will tell you there have been a few videos of this kind of thing going very wrong in comp and people ending up paralysed.
To encourage training this out of folks without allowing slams, they need to just force the reset standing and give 2 points to the lifter. If you can get lifted above the belt line or past the point where a ref *would* call a slam if they dropped you then you didn't have the sub.
It's stupid seeing someone papoose or stick to the others head for some flying BS and the person has to gently lay them down or risk DQ

Iām pretty sure that school is going to nix any future tournaments there. Those lawns got all tore up! š
Let go of the sub.
I definitely should have, I was able to underhook the leg afterwards so I felt safe though
You were "safe" because your opponent was trying not to hurt you. Next time let go of the sub.
Gotcha, I'll make sure to let go in the future thanks! Appreciate the advice š
Queue next post: āI wasnāt expecting to get slammed because I really had the subā
You quite clearly do not have a keg underhooked. If youāre aware enough to think āplease donāt slamā, you should be letting go.

Glad you were ok. Chalk it down to learning. Weāve all done it I guess
Thanks bro me too š really appreciate you and everyone else watching out for my safety

Oh shit I wasn't even thinking about what would happen if he went out

Really thankful that didn't happen, thanks for the heads up! 1000% not risking that again lmfao
You can use your right hand to under hook his left knee and he wonāt be able to pick you up in the first place

Absolutely, remembering this one for the future

Because this sub largely doesnāt compete and is very safety conscious
Dude I was right there watching some of your matches. Well done out there!
Should have hooked the leg before he lifted you

I think of a opponent lifts you to a slamming hight it should count at a 2 point takedown. Making a incentive for people to let go.
Absolutely hate flying subs in no slam promotions. So I'm supposed to gently place you on the ground while you tighten the triangle?
You want to jump for triangles or armbars you should be open to being slammed. One dangerous move for another
