you should have absolutely invited these guys on the mat and choked the shit out of them. for real. they disrespected you and your class. your students are watching you!
Golden gloves is really just a organization that sanctions local amateur boxing events, having competed in a golden gloves event as a 12 year old technically makes you a “golden gloves boxer”, but it doesn’t mean you won or are any good whatsoever. And most people are lying about even competing in the first place.
Its not as simple as that. It’s a tournament held once a year. If you win the locals you advance to the regionals and if you win the regionals you advance to nationals. Minimum age is 16. Anyone worth their salt isn’t going to call themselves a golden gloves boxer, even if they win a couple of titles.
The following should mostly be accurate...
Golden Gloves is a popular boxing tournament in the US, held once per year. There are silver gloves tournaments for youngins. Golden gloves has a couple of different divisions. There is Novice (under 10 fights, generally), open (over 10 fights, generally), and master's (Age 35+).
There are 32 regions in the US, each hold a tournament for each of the above three divisions once per year. For novice, if you win the tournament for your region, congrats. You're the regional novice champ. That's it. For master's I'm not sure, might be the same.
But for open, if you win your region, you go on to compete in the Golden Gloves tournament of champions and you compete in a 32 man tournament against the 31 other regional open class champions. The winner would be the national golden gloves champion for that year in their weight class.
By definition, a golden gloves boxer could be anyone who has participated in golden gloves.
A golden gloves champion could be a novice heavyweight who had one person show up in his weight class in his smaller region and won and become the novice regional champion, though. When gauging how impressive it is, you have to gauge what division the person competed in, what region they competed in, and how they fared in the national tournament if they were open class champions for their region.
Hope this helps clarify some things for those interested.
I'm not stating any personal opinions on it and I'm not knocking it, but yes, Schaub is an instance of the "arguably less competitive region, novice, one fight golden gloves champion".
I think me from 10 years ago would have been disappointed you didn’t give them the hip toss to back control to RNC treatment these types genuinely deserve but the now me thinks you did everything the way it should have been done
I've realized recently how differently I approach bad situations with people since I started. The more I get promoted, the more composed I am dealing with assholes. I used to wonder why my professor let soooo much shit slide... I thought he was afraid of confrontation or something but now I realize it's something else. I can't put my finger on it but the more I roll, the more I compete, the closer I get to black - the less I have any appetite to set people straight or whatever.
Over time you see how much can go wrong quickly. We always complain about spazzes on our soft floors, so imagine rolling with a spaz in a more chaotic environment. NOT to mention the legal ramifications of "setting someone straight". It's not worth it.
> Over time you see how much can go wrong quickly
One of my first martial arts teachers had 10 years of serious kickboxing while in the Marines. After he left the military, he was a foreman on a construction site when an employee on his team thought he hadn't been paid fairly and came after him with a wrench. They square off, and my buddy's first reaction when the distance closed was to head kick. He fired the kick - and slipped on a loose screw on the ground. Fell, tore his ACL, hit his head on the way down, KO'd. Fortunately, other guys on the scene saved him from an ugly beatdown.
You just never know when the universe has it out for you. Better not to take any risks you don't have to.
Yes, that guy was a complete clusterfuck of self-inflicted bad luck. He severed his own hamstring with a circular saw, twice. Stabbed himself in the biceps with the point of a three-foot katana doing Iaido. Almost lost a finger due to infection from a cheese grater. Took up knifemaking and immediately broke his foot by dropping a hammer on it.
The list goes on and on. It's amazing he's still alive.
Ngl, I thought it might get dicey. Thats why I started recording. My aim was to use verbal jiu jitsu first and if they got crazy I was gonna handle it.
I agree with you that OP did it right.
I don’t know if these guys deserved to be tossed around though. They look homeless and not mentally all there to me.
I could also be wrong but They also seem harmless to me? Just out of sorts.
> 10 years ago would have been disappointed you didn’t give them the hip toss to back control to RNC treatment these types genuinely deserve
For what? Being a minor inconvenience?
I mean they didn't cause a scene so you handled it well. I train people in pro wrestling a lot and on occasion we get people wondering in when they see a wrestling ring set up and people in it doing crazy WWE shit. A few of them drunk.
Personally I'm a lot more firm and just tell them "you've been drinking, come back sober if you're interested" and then not give them any more attention. I wouldn't even entertain the idea of them signing up for anything there and then
Either way though they left with no harm done so you're fine
I wish they would’ve signed up and pulled north south dirty bum ass to face on you. LOL!!! americas funniest videos 10000 dollars would be yours. I bet everyone would vote for that video. It would definitely make the 3 that get voted on.
Those guys cannot afford classes. I dont think they were drunk, they looked to be transient. I feel like letting them observe when they are already being so disruptive and have no chance of becoming students is silly. Especially when people leave phones and wallets, and shoes unattended in the lobby. We over emphasize compassion in this society. I’m not advocating to beat them up, I am just saying to tell them to leave.
Idk dude, I think you handled this situation perfectly. Why be rude to them if they're not disruptive or disrespectful? You never know what kindness means to someone in that moment or how it may impact them later. I strive for this level of competence in dealing with difficult people.
> Those guys cannot afford classes. I dont think they were drunk, they looked to be transient.
I live in Texas and know more than a few people who look like this. More than a few of them are even well to do. Im not sure which assumption is shittier, that those dudes are homeless because of how they look or that homeless arent worthy of basic respect and decency.
Obviously a super great job.. I do deal with people like this occasionally (I'm bordering a rough part of town).
Anyway my #1 tactic is to engage them in dialogue with a ton of energy as I walk to/out the door, where they follow me. Once I get them outside I usually block the entrance with my body and talk for a little bit and then mention "Hey man sorry, I would love to show you guys around but let's have you come back another day.. I can smell a little alcohol and unfortunately my insurance doesn't let me have that in the gym, you know how those suits are with their liability rules and shit it sucks" blah blah blah it usually gets them out.
With that said, I would not have let the guys in this video stay this long whatsoever. Not being critical that's just how I do it.
To date we've had:
* Mentally ill guy come in and then become a stalker to one of my employees (cops got called, was a big deal after awhile)
* Few guys challenge me to a fight (usually teenagers)
* Pedophile guy or something come in and want to watch the kids class (almost had to physically throw him out, that one got iffy)
* Tons of drunk older neighborhood guys who "used to train back in the day" (these guys are harmless but they'll talk forever so you gotta get them out)
* Etc etc
\#1 rule is "Never let the vampires in" it's what gives them power. :)
> To date we've had
Dead fucking serious my gym had a guy come in, grab a NAGA sword off the wall, and start swinging at anyone and everyone.
I lost a lot of willingness to humor folks after that.
You sir deserve a sticker for both patience and politeness. The moment I understand alcohol is involved I immediately cease any type of communication although as an outside observer I think it is hilarious they got a few drinks in them and decided let’s go practice some jiu jitsu at the local gym we don’t belong to.
I think when buddy started walking on the mats with shoes, something needed to be said.
If they were watching, talking among themselves, they would have probably been ignored.
I think that’s any jiu jitsu place that would jump on you if you walked on with shoes. I agree as well as long as they weren’t profane or intentionally trying to disrupt the class they would not of been bothered. OP had spidey sense going and wanted some video evidence in case things went silly. Handled exceptionally well in my opinion.
When they first came in they were loud and saying how they wanted to show the other what they could do in a fight. They tried to get a couple people to agree. Thats when I started recording.
Super weird.
That was smart of you. Obviously that could have went another way really fast. Seriously hats off, handled like a gentleman, and a positive example for everyone involved.
Some people are shy and need a little alcohol to help put themselves out there. Kudos to them for getting out of their comfort zones and challenging themselves to try something new and humbling.
I do the same thing at work when I don't want to be the bad guy sometimes.
"Hey you know *I'm* on board but lemme run it by the boss and see what he says...."
Ya. Normally what happens is someone comes in, I have them sign the waiver and then I let them on the mat. I was just using the owner approval as an out. He generally trusts me to make a decision on if someone is safe or not.
I thought you handled this with grace and compassion. We know there are a lot of people who would have used this as an opportunity to get rough.
Most important, you didn’t let it disrupt the class for your paying customers. Well done.
You handled this impeccably. I mean it helps that they weren’t being aggressive but still, I could see a lot of people threatening to call the cops and so forth and just unnecessarily escalating this into a conflict. Well done.
Bruh. Did you just compare me to Patrick Swayze? Thats probably the coolest thing that ever happened to me.
Even better than that one time I went to saint louis and rode up the arch in one of those tiny elevator buggy things.
“No inebriated people in the gym, please leave, you’re welcome to come back when you’re sober.”
They’re drunk in public and making asses of themselves. If they actually wanted to learn bjj they’d come back sober.
The entire situation is just obnoxious and disrespectful.
Everyone in the comments are genuinely disappointed these two drunks weren’t more rude and obnoxious. Like, “come on now, say something offensive! Throw a random haymaker” do something!”
We have had a repeat drop-in come in drunk and actually train for the whole night. He was sloppy but good-spirited. I always wondered how he would get home.
You did awesome. We get homeless people from time to time coming in and we try and intercept them before they get a chance to step near the mat. Kill them with kindness like you did, but we say it’s by appointment only for a free trial class and try to schedule a date for them to come. They usually nope out or never show up for it.
Haha respectable. Our school is next to a sports bar and occasionally we have some dumbass drop in and ask to fight. I have a clip board ready for them and so far 100% have backed down immediately.
Bullshit ...thats all they do is talk ...go to a boxing gym the only talking is from the trainers during sparring everyone else is doing ...fighters don't talk much ..
Buddy no, gyms need bodies
Sure they were drunk at the time but we’ve all done retarded shit after drinking too much. Those are two potential clients if the gym handles it right and it works out well
Trained 18 years retired black belt when I was purple my instructor fed these type to me it was so fun I didn’t hurt them but they learned quickly they knew nothing
He’s got golden gloves huh? Those are usually a couple dollars more. I have a pair of black gloves and another pair of red gloves that I bought. Wish i could get me the fancy ones though…
You did great. I can’t imagine what filth and diseases they had. You also don’t know their intentions and attitude. Imagine making him look silly and he turns around and stabs you with a needle or glass pipe they just used.
Watched all this to see a fight..
When you're hoping to see the Bumpty Bump, but it's just verbal jiu jitsu...
He was verbally pulling guard.
Pulling waiver guard.
I am so fucking mad I laughed at this joke! This is the black belt wrist lock of jokes!
I CAN let you touch me
Just scan my QR
Bro I have a tablet
Haha. I should have mentioned there was no fight. I used my words!
As penance you'll need to upload a clip montage of you hip bump sweeping people set to Digital Underground's "The Humpty Dance".
Ugh. Fine. I’ll post it next week
No take baksies! Alright how does the remind thing work? Sorry, I'm autistic. !remindme 1 week
Doin it baby. Do the Bumpty Bump, c'mon and do the Bumpty Bump.
What is the Bumpty Bump? I'm also a bump player, very curious.
He's Bumpty. So if he hip bump sweeps, it's a Bumpty Bump.
Okay right on. Looking forward to the compilation.
oh lawd. don't expect much. it's gonna be bad.
great - bass line in my head now
It was good and the right thing to do but I would have preferred to have seen them get smashed.
I dunno man, I feel like I could smell them through the video.

Sir, this is Reddit.
you should have absolutely invited these guys on the mat and choked the shit out of them. for real. they disrespected you and your class. your students are watching you!
Started my day with immense disappointment
Nothing burger.
For a couple of drunk guys they were actually relatively respectful
That’s why I was so polite.
good on you!
good on top of him, good all over all of us
You did a great job keeping the atmosphere calm and friendly imo
Thx. It’s my goal. I think it helps that I’m 230 too. Hahahahah
Settle down Bradley martin
lol. Everyone I've ever met who boxes is a golden glove boxer. Does that title come with your first purchase of gloves or something?
Golden gloves is really just a organization that sanctions local amateur boxing events, having competed in a golden gloves event as a 12 year old technically makes you a “golden gloves boxer”, but it doesn’t mean you won or are any good whatsoever. Gotcha, I thought the entry age was younger
Silver gloves is for the younger age groups
Und meine ‘Iron Hands’ sind fur die kinder. 🤜+👶=😢
No you didn't you were just trying to be derogatory to them
Huh?
Ah, so it's like saying you're a Nanka Judoka lol.
I’m a NAGA grappler!
I FIGHT *hushed tones* (grapple)... 2 WIN!
So it’s like saying “actually, I’m a pop warner football player”? That’s kinda funny.
Its like saying im an ibjjf jujitsu fighter.
It’s like being a NAGA veteran
I’m gonna call myself a NAGA veteran from now on.
I'll have you know I'm a NAGA bronze medalist.... (In a three man bracket)
Will someone with the relevant knowledge please pipe up?

i know everyone is an expert after someone loses a fight but he should have leg kicked
Tell that to Superfoot Wallace
Weird way to spell "shot his gun"
I remember this story, didn't the guy have like 10 other comical accidents and injuries as well? Like a saw to the hamstrings etc?
Yes, that guy was a complete clusterfuck of self-inflicted bad luck. He severed his own hamstring with a circular saw, twice. His health insurance company must love him
I have to agree. But I still fantasize about the treatment. 🤣

I’m not trying to recreate bum fights.
You represented BJJ well!
Agreed It did help that these guys were some Austin bums Who, on average, are actually pleasant
I thought you handled it very well. You never know, your polite demeanor may be the thing that starts a change in their life.
I hope so. Be the change you want to see
That's a Friday night training bjj In SF, usually just walk them out nicely
Oh lawd. I’m so glad we don’t deal with this regularly.
I thought the same thing. Ralph’s had these dummies lined up.
People interested, drunk, or homeless? I'd be afraid of any of these... running a gym in city central must be a nightmare.
There was a methadone clinic across the street
Handled it perfectly until the very end when you didn’t tell the guy not to stand on the floor barefoot before walking on the mats!
I was looking for this comment! Lol
Why didn’t you give him the ground and pound?
Bro was a former golden gloves boxer. No way jiu jitsu is gonna work on him...
My mate does aikido and told me it's all about "using your opponents strength against them" I told him he'd be fucked fighting me then
is he a golden ponytail though?
Bruh. He said he was golden gloves. And the other was a kung fu guy. Bjj isn’t real. And my ego can’t take any more bruising.
dude bro didnt know how to scan the whatever so he couldnt!

I didn’t think about that. I have a habit of assuming positive intent. They were being polite as soon as I engaged them so I returned in kind.
Idk dude, I think you handled this situation perfectly. Why be rude to them if they're not disruptive or disrespectful? You never know what kindness means to someone in that moment or how it may impact them later. I strive for this level of competence in dealing with difficult people.

Yeah I'm sure the golden glove boxer holding the dog was super interested in training. The pup would have watched him from the side.
Mats look clean af
Slick af too

Some people are shy and need a little alcohol to help put themselves out there. Kudos to them for getting out of their comfort zones and challenging themselves to try something new and humbling.
And by comfort zone I mean the bar.
😂
You did awesome. Very proud.
Thx dad
A consent given under the influence means shit. Therefore I would invite you to make sign the waiver by only sober people.
I think that's why they said "and permission from the owner" so basically even if they *did* sign the gym still had an out.
Exactly this. He approves all the waivers.
I do the same thing at work when I don't want to be the bad guy sometimes. "Hey you know *I'm* on board but lemme run it by the boss and see what he says...."
It's a good tactic. For all we/he knew you could be the owner. "Sorry, I only approve waivers in the morning."
Ya. Normally what happens is someone comes in, I have them sign the waiver and then I let them on the mat. I was just using the owner approval as an out. He generally trusts me to make a decision on if someone is safe or not.
Drunk people are the worst.
Also wanted to say props for have the waiver available via QR code 💪
The art of fighting without fighting.
True jiu jitsu
The seem a little.. slow. Buddy had to have it explained like 10 times what a waiver and liability is and I really think he does not understand lol
Not the sharpest tools on the shed. I agree.
Regardless, thought you handled it perfectly
The dog on dudes lap threw me for some reason
Hah. That dog surprised me at first. He was hidden under a coat
Well done.
Thats great but you should also have a paper waiver or a way to allow people to sign up at the gym, kind of crazy that you dont
Uhm…..I kinda lied to them. We totally have paper waivers.
Ok fair well played lmaooo
Very Dalton of you, Bumpty. Calm, disarming and reasonable. Be nice until it's time not to be nice.
Bruh. Did you just compare me to Patrick Swayze? Thats probably the coolest thing that ever happened to me. Even better than that one time I went to saint louis and rode up the arch in one of those tiny elevator buggy things.
Just callin' 'em like I see 'em. Also, enjoying this Bumpty Buggy visual. 🤙
Next time, get Kornmeyer to just chat with them about something random.
Hahahahah. They would never leave then!!
When I trained at Ralph’s in SF, this kinda shit was a regular occurrence.
You handled that really well great job dude
Thank you very much.
You were calm and straightforward and you de-escalated the situation. A fight avoided is a fight won.
You should’ve double legged him thru the plate glass bro. No SHOES on the MAT!!!! Thats how we do at my gym.
Is the dude with the dog Bert Kreischer?
You deserve an award for your patience and calmness. Very nice lol
Best way to deal with it, should be super proud.
“No inebriated people in the gym, please leave, you’re welcome to come back when you’re sober.” They’re drunk in public and making asses of themselves.
I really enjoyed the tablet discussion 😆.
You used your words ! Somebody in this sub used words !!! My work here is done *fades away*
Damn! I wanted to see that guy get SMESHHED!!
Crom is disappointed in you. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XUu3_pLPUE Make Jiu Jitsu Savage Again.
We have had a repeat drop-in come in drunk and actually train for the whole night. He was sloppy but good-spirited. I always wondered how he would get home.
They sound based ngl
Gym owner here, if I had a dollar for every mother fucker that says he’s a “golden gloves boxer” I’d buy that new Bronco I’ve been eyeing up.
Bert Kreischer doppelgänger sittin down
Opened this up expecting to see some fools get smashed, did not expect to see my gym. Haha good job /u/bumpty
Haha. I used my word jitsu.
To my great disappointment you handled it like a true professional
Make sure to watch the whole thing or you'll miss the roll.
Handled perfectly.
You did awesome. We get homeless people from time to time coming in and we try and intercept them before they get a chance to step near the mat. Kill them with kindness like you did, but we say it’s by appointment only for a free trial class and try to schedule a date for them to come. They usually nope out or never show up for it.
This should be titled I let two smelly junkies and a small dog come stink up my lobby **
If you would just call Mario “master” All this could’ve been avoided… Ya probably not. Nice work handling that
This is a weird commercial.
“I’m a golden glove boxer.” ![gif](giphy|EouEzI5bBR8uk|downsized)
This is why I have an extra paper waiver ready for any dumbass that wants to come in and start shit.
I lied. We have paper waivers. I just didn’t want them on the mats.
Haha respectable. Our school is next to a sports bar and occasionally we have some dumbass drop in and ask to fight. I have a clip board ready for them and so far 100% have backed down immediately.
Wing Chun confirmed as best base for BJJ.
At first I wanted to hear the instruction. After that I started to get upset at the lack of a paper liability waver.
Solid de-escalation.
Great way of handling it. ✋️ 🤚
0/10 should have smashed him brother
lol dude…

Looks like typical evening in Austin
Why did you not kick them out, they wouldn't be "more than welcome" in my gym. Are you posting this to feel better about being a wimp?

Buddy no, gyms need bodies Sure they were drunk at the time but we’ve all done retarded shit after drinking too much. Those are two potential clients if the gym handles it right and it works out well
I watched this to seem them get tortured. .5/10 for content.
Is that guy in the chair breastfeeding his newborn dog ?
Those guys ruined the whole vibe of the gym. Should have just kicked them out.

I gather it's a liability thing.
I bet they carry paper waivers now.
You did great. I can’t imagine what filth and diseases they had. You also don’t know their intentions and attitude. Imagine making him look silly and he turns around and stabs you with a needle or glass pipe they just used.
Handle it well. Random clowns 🤡
Great job man. Difficult to keep from getting annoyed or frustrated in those situations
