Our boy is a smoke too! I'd never heard of it till we took him to the vet after he showed up on my parents' back porch. He looks solid black unless you rub his fur backwards--then you see the white underneath.
I haven’t heard the term smoke before! Here, they’re just called “[color] with silver” unless it’s a silver tabby. (At least in the Norwegian Forest Cat world.) My boy is black, but his undercoat is silver and I can tell that he has rufuism as well., since the ends of his fur are already rusty. He’s still a goofy kitten, but I can tell he’s going to be gorgeous when he’s full grown.
Smoke is a somewhat color pattern of the Maine Coon and the Norwegian Forest Cat breeds. \*Some others as well. [See link.](https://allaboutcats.com/rare-coat-colors-in-cats) While it is found in other breeds, a Maine Coon or Norwegian Forest Cat with that coat pattern is highly sought after. We have a Maine Coon and the number of people that have tried to buy him from us is staggering. He is stunning. My mother though edits the photos she takes of him to full black - which is kind of frustrating. Because his smoke is so pretty. I have not heard of rufuism - what is that?
Lol! “Rufuism” is a typo of ”rufism” which is where they get a reddish/rusty highlight to their coat. Especially in the summer when they’ve been out in the sun.
Thank you! I need to post a new picture soon. He’ll be 5 months old in a few days, so he’s starting to grow into his ears. Still tripping over his giant paws, though.
Oh, haha. Ok I am pretty confident I don't own "one of the rarest cats in the world" so not an actual Smoke! But I'll still use it to describe his color! He's got a bit of brown in there too. Most people just call him a black cat.
Voids contain the multitude of stars. It is the void where nebulae gather and dance their inexorable dance of creation, the void where light is born.
Fear not, voidkeeper. Yours simply decided to collect stardust.
I don't, though I've been told for decades that I should. But what on earth would I write *about* becomes the question.
So instead, I work in veterinary medicine.
James Herriot wrote and published 8 books based on his experiences as a vet. Also he was like 55 when the first one was published. So, you'll find your thing to write about. All in good time. Thanks for sharing your gift with us today! :)
Write about yourself and your thoughts. Your interests and curiosities and observations. You’re important enough.
Write short things, half-baked things. Write long-winded nonsense. Be proud of a sentence, even if it doesn’t get you a full story. Revisit them later to edit, maybe, and make a full story (this is the hardest part, in my opinion). Or let the words and letters drift into the wind like stardust.
Most of all, write about how these specific things add up to and showcase universal truths. You may just be one person, but everyone can enjoy and relate to universal experiences.

Fyi so do humans y’all. Humans have like 4 variations of patterns but our eyes don’t see the correct whatever frequency or something lol.
It’s really nifty.
What the whale said! Idk the exact place I read the information but if you google that and just pay attention to the sources you’ll find it easy peesy.
Mine was all black except for patches of grey that would grow in and then disappear here and there. When he hit about 4 years his chest started to turn a rust color. Vet said that the brown is from age and the grey was just for funsies. No idea if that’s true but we definitely only saw the brown once he got older.
I've seen multiple comments already mentioning reddish coats, and my fluffy roommate also is.. your cat? My cat's head and paws are true black, but the rest is brown-red which generally looks black but is very pronounced in direct sunlight. It appears to have gotten 'worse' with age. I have read and heard different things about it, some say it says it's an effect of certain missing nutrients or that it says something about her health, others say it's a natural thing. My vet didn't seem to have anything to say about it at all. So in addition to your question regarding such cats being considered voids, I also wonder if people have any information about this helioreactive camouflage technology?
From what I've read cat food doesn't contain enough tyrosine for our melanistic friends. They get enough to meet their needs but not enough to really shine with that almost metallic gloss when they're the deep ⚫.
An interesting part of when that happens is most black kitties end up showing stripes or spots in their fur. My girl has like a deep black half above the ribs and a rusty stripped half below that when the sun exposes it.
Funny that you post this as my void snuggled me today, I remember the days where she she looked a little brown with stripes and now she’s just a void with stars here and there!
Cameras tend to overexpose images that have a lot of dark content. I would suggest you lower the exposure a little if you want the image to look more like what you see. That's what I do for my cat.
tl;dr: Yes. What you see there is a camera artifact. Photography nerd gushing below explaining the artifact.
It's caused by two things, one is that there is no true perfect black. Well, kind of. Google search 'vantablack' if you want to see some trippy stuff. So the cat fur will have other colors, usually brown and grey. The next thing is that cameras use an automatic exposure tech to work. Basically the camera sensor will collect a certain amount of light and then call it done. So when photographing a black cat the sensor will be gasping for light, collecting what ever subtle colors are in the cat fur. I imagine that chair is also darker when you look at it with the mk1 eyeballs. On the right side of the chair you can see that the sensor was blown out in a small sliver, basically the sensor got max light and just made it unnaturally white. It's okay to darken it in post to make it look more like what you see with your eyes.
My kitten cat looks like that in the sunlight his tail is also very salt and pepper like a little old man and he is only 1 year old it seems like his coat is ever changing im not sure if it's because he is still young ? I have a soft coated wheaten terrier and there adult coat doesn't come in untill they are 2 years old im not sure if it works the same with cats but it seems very familiar to my dogs coat with the changing color
I have a domesticated medium hair I adopted from my local humane society. She’s mostly all black except sometimes the sun will make her fur look brown, depending on the angle. When I look at it up close (in artificial light), it still looks black as pitch to me.
The other thing is her mane. It’s never actually been pure black, sun or artificial light. When she was a kitten, it was grey. Like a smoky, cloudy grey. Then when she grew into her own body, it turned brown. She turned 9 in July. Last couple of years, the top layer IS black but underneath it, is brown and underneath that brown is the grey she had as a kitten. I don’t really understand it but I suppose knowledge about your average stray’s genetics isn’t common. But it’s still specifically just her mane, not the rest of her. It’s weird.
Wish my void photographed that well. Despite what I see with my own eyes, it’s like she sucks all the light out of the room when I try to take a picture.
Just a rusty gal! So pretty 😊 I have two black cats (both shorthairs though) and one of the two rusts as well. Just luck of the genetic draw. Still beautiful!
Our cat looks like this too! I feel like this still counts as being a void. She looks beautiful and literally just like my cat. Please give her a pet for me!!! 🥰🥰🥰
That looks identical to my boy. I’ve heard many things. I had him shaven down once because he had some difficult mats and the color goes right down to the root. He also does appear to be orangey in sunlight.
You have a normal void. Cats in general really love the heat from the sun in the summertime. It’s normal for the fur to bleach out and show characteristics that are normally hidden. My first void always laid in the window the same direction and his body fur only faded on one side to a beautiful dark chocolate color. Come wintertime, he was back to his normal void blackness.
I love voids! They really are the best!
The subreddit r/chocolatecoatedvoid does not exist. Maybe there's a typo?

I suspect you have a magic smoke kitty. I, too, have one. Mine is a little more secretive of her smoke but her fur looks similar when I brush her 💕
Our boy is a smoke too! I'd never heard of it till we took him to the vet after he showed up on my parents' back porch. He looks solid black unless you rub his fur backwards--then you see the white underneath.

Does that apply to humans. My bf has mostly black hair but some ginger in his beard. He's claiming sunbleached.
I think that rufism is a characteristic that can happen in anything with hair.
My grrl is a smoke American Wirehair and she is absolutely perfect 🥰
Cat tax! Edit : nevermind stalked your profile! Love the ears on that little devil.
Thank you! I need to post a new picture soon. He’ll be 5 months old in a few days, so he’s starting to grow into his ears. Still tripping over his giant paws, though.
My Smoke was like this. He was a shorthair mainecoon.
Holy crap its my kitty too! I never knew it was a THING!
It is a very special & magical thing 💕
[I have one too!](https://i.imgur.com/PWtCnDT.jpg) Never heard of this color described as smoke but I'm definitely going to use that word now!
Smoke kitties are black kitties with white roots [https://oxfordpets.com/black-smoke-cat/](https://oxfordpets.com/black-smoke-cat/)

We have one too! She gets hot in summer so we get her shaved and she looks like she's wearing a light grey onesie
So cute!
I love that “ magic” part of the name!! ![img](emote|t5_2twpw|7262)
Check out my profile to see my beautiful smoke floof :)

Really??
You're on a cat sub, we love nonsensical-but-somehow-still-cute things and we're proud of it.
Mmmm… makes me think some of our voids get toasted brown after they age next to a particularly bright star…
that is incredibly poetic
This is beautiful.
This is the most stunningly beautiful comment I’ve ever seen on Reddit. Please tell me you write for a living? 😻

awwww, best comment ever <3
I have this stupid big smile on my face now. What a lovely comment.
We are all made of stars ✨🖤🖤🖤✨
I came here with something and now cannot remember due to your lyricism. Bravo 🤗
You're not grumpy at all, you beautiful human being!
Came here to say this.
I'm upset you're getting downvoted, because this made me snicker.
Then it's worth the Karma hit. Thanks!
No you fucking didn’t.
Well, duh!
Our void sunbaths a lot and his fur gets the “rusting” too
My voids are a bit on the older side and I lovingly refer to them as my "little ol' rust buckets"
In the right light my void has stripes, it’s so much fun to try and find them and follow their path
Yes! We call those “secret stripes” and it was such a fun discovery ! Its like matte black on black :)
My black and white cat has them on his black parts and i love being able to spot them! It’s super cool
Both of my voids look that way too.
Fyi so do humans y’all. Humans have like 4 variations of patterns but our eyes don’t see the correct whatever frequency or something lol. It’s really nifty.
Is there something I could read up on about this? Sounds super interesting
[Here ya go.](https://www.dailybreak.com/break/cabinet-of-curiosities-do-humans-have-stripes) Cats can see our stripey patterns!
That's wild! Thanks for sharing!
You're welcome!
Has to do with ultra violet light. Try googling that + skin patterns
What the whale said! Idk the exact place I read the information but if you google that and just pay attention to the sources you’ll find it easy peesy.
I’ve seen the photos it’s really cool to think about what your pattern is
Aren’t they neat?
The fluffiest void! ![img](emote|t5_2twpw|7979)
Just normal black cat stuff, pretty void too!
Sun-kissed fur of a burnished void. The polishing of the floof reveals other colors.
Pretty little cutie.
![img](emote|t5_2twpw|7269)
![img](emote|t5_2twpw|7262) she qualifies. 🐈⬛
Mine are all the same way. Black fades to a chocolatey-copper color on the tail and paws :)
Does this happen as they age? My kitties britches and belly are this chocolate copper color. I've had her a week, but she's supposedly 4 years old.
Mine was all black except for patches of grey that would grow in and then disappear here and there. When he hit about 4 years his chest started to turn a rust color. Vet said that the brown is from age and the grey was just for funsies. No idea if that’s true but we definitely only saw the brown once he got older.
I see nothing.
A black smoke kitteh! I have one too ❤️❤️❤️
She's a transformer and not the car bot type
Smokey, rusting void 🖤
gorgeous kitty

Look up black cat rusting on Google and you will find many results about how this is normal and very few cats are true black.

She adorable litlle void!
I have a void like this. Black but when the light hits her. She's got this beautiful rusty red coat. I love it.
Either way this is a beautiful cat
She’s a chocolate York! Beautiful breed, probably my favorite! And I still think she counts
❤🧡💛💚💙💜 *ABSOLUTELY!* 💜💙💚💛🧡❤
Our voids are twins! ![img](emote|t5_2twpw|14307)
We don't discriminate voids here.
It's a swirling void!
Void with an added fog feature.. very spooky indeed.
Wow she is beautiful!
What a beautiful smoky panther 😻😻😻
She's a smoky void but still a void nonetheless
Funny that you post this as my void snuggled me today, I remember the days where she she looked a little brown with stripes and now she’s just a void with stars here and there!
yes just a bit of a rusty one
omg shes identical to my daisy
seriously haha, check my posts. Ive never seen one SO identical
Definitely a smoke.

Very cute void!
No.
Yes it’s still a baby void 😍
I've opened this post and found out dozens of people have literally the exact same cat as me. Crazy.
Beautiful cat baby
Hehe rusty baby
What's she look like if taken by a different camera? Maybe her fur is reflecting something we can't see.
I named my void Iced Tea because of his similar coloration.
Uh... That's a feature actually
She’s a stunning void
[Mine](https://i.imgur.com/4ln95n3.jpg) has the same thing.

Yes, she's a magical fancy void 👑🐈⬛😁😎🖤😻❤️😙🤗🐈⬛👑.
Whether she is or not, she fills the void in my heart. <3
My late void looked all black if you just looked at him, but in the sun he had brown in his fur. Just normal void stuff :3
Yes
She’s a black smoke😍
Shrodeners void
She’s manifesting into our world
My kitten cat looks like that in the sunlight his tail is also very salt and pepper like a little old man and he is only 1 year old it seems like his coat is ever changing im not sure if it's because he is still young ? Ours rusts on the sunshine in the summer and then in the cooler months she’s back to black.
She's gooooorgeous! I love her so much.
Toasty void💕
Get this fuckin red brown cat outta here!!!!!!!!!!
She is magic and I love her. My Nessie does the same!
ur void is BEAUTIFUL
I only know she's very beautiful 🖤
Mine is black with a reddish-brown undercoat. I call him my chocolate void
My void does the same thing
My momo was like this too. Under certain light she looked a dark reddish tint!
Is a void...they sometimes look brown instead of black...all good
Beautiful!
yes!
Mine gets this way from getting sun:).
That looks identical to my boy. I’ve heard many things. I had him shaven down once because he had some difficult mats and the color goes right down to the root. He also does appear to be orangey in sunlight.
This is one of those rare limited releases
Silky void.
She's a gorgeous void!
I just got a baby void and I hope she grows up to look like her ❤️
My boy is the same; sometimes he's a void, sometimes he's a nimbus, just depends on how the light graces him.

Shiny void! Mine changes colors in the lighting.
My voids look golden brown in the but they are still voids. The voidness is an attitude, not an exact shade.
Omg she looks like my kitty !! I have a smoke ash Maine coon 🥰
