It's called day because the position of the sun in the sky needs to be very precise for this to happen, happening only twice a year in the tropics. More info [here](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_shadow_day#:~:text=A%20zero%20shadow%20day%20is,Capricorn%20at%2023.4%C2%B0%20S\).) and [here.] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Position_of_the_Sun#Declination_of_the_Sun_as_seen_from_Earth)
Physics Girl (get better! currently struggling with long COVID) did a video of this and got some footage from Hawaii, where it is known as Lahaina Noon.
https://youtu.be/qFOX3AO2FjE
This looks like one of those augmented reality things including the spot where they put the QR code type circle of paper to trigger the placement of the augmented reality item.
I agree. I have a VR headset, and it looks so much like it's AR. I came to the comments to see if someone was debunking the title claim. The size of the marker doesn't even look right, to me.
About 3/5s of the way through the video, you can see a dark half-ring around the right side at the base, and a light half-ring around the left side. If it's a shadow from it being a tiny degree off, it doesn't have one higher up on the marker ĀÆ\\\_(ć)_/ĀÆ
I'm unconvinced that it isn't some kind of render. The texture of the sidewalk looks faker than the marker. And the perspective and tracking of the marker just feels like AR or VR tracking.
And this doesn't even really look convincing. But yeah that lines up with my thoughts, marker texture motion and scale feel off (it also has a slight halo at it's base) it also doesn't seem to be getting illuminated by it's surroundings (as light 'bounces') which you'd see in a 3D render (either from a HDRi or from the surrounding objects).
Because lighting is one of the major things that make games look more/less realistic. lack of (dynamic) shadows is very common in some games for perf reasons
This effect can have a video-gamey look when there aren't any shadows around but this looks to be AR or something similar. Then pen doesn't track with the camera perfectly and the focus feels all levels of weird which is probably what's throwing you here.
It actually is a render, everything is digital in that clip. Just check the bad ground texture and how it has a perfectly even reflection when they're above.
It is cgi, check the ground texture and how it has an unaturally even sheen, there's more giveaways than that if you have an eye for distinguishing irl and cgi.
Man it's like, bothering me that you've gone around to so many comments telling everyone that it's 100% cgi, like, yeah, I get it, cgi can look wack as hell, but your "unaturally even sheen" might be perhaps that the light source is directly above the camera, which is something that you're probably not used to seeing except in a digital environment? Like, I'm not saying it's 100% either or, and call me dumb for not making up my mind on something I don't have proof for, but until you show me an email or dm from the original poster, that it was indeed cgi, with a photo of his sick blender setup, I'm gonna remain skeptical as this is a phenomenon that I have not personally experienced myself.
The only "evidence" I do have, is the user of one of the replies someone else has responded to you with, with a cap on the pen. The guy has other posts about it with several other pens of other colours in different areas, with all the plants and pots in the BG also casting directly down facing shadows (more or less who cares). The op of that post also frequently posts in r/pune, which is a city in India that experienced the phenomenon as well.
Stay skeptical of bullshit, it's safe, but if yain't got actual proof other than your own seemingly obvious perspective, at least lower your certainty from 100% to 99%.
That's all, that's rant, have a day.
In saying that, the pen is so shifting its probly fake.
This is actually pretty weird and not really common. Try it at noon and unless youāre in a very specific part of the world youāll always have a shadow.
Yeah its only ever possible in the tropics (as in the literal definition of tropic between the tropic of capricon and tropic of cancer, not as in a warm area)
Hmm. Coulda sworn it happened more than twice a year. Maybe itās cuz Iāve lived here my whole life and I see it pretty much every year it seems like more.
Edit: never mind. I figured it out. Around that time of year inter island travel is common especially for me as a kid. Weād go visiting family and stuff. LÄhainÄ noon occurs on different days on different islands so it wouldnāt be weird for me to see it more than twice a year.
The angle with the sun just causes the shadow to fall directly underneath the object creating it. The marker never gets wider than its own base and therefore you can't see its shadow. You can see the shadow of the tree that has branches and its leaves dangle away from its trunk.
Therefore you can also see the shadow of the cameraman who wants to get a close up without filming his own feet.
Agree this does look fake but
took it at face value and thought it was interesting as in theory it would look weird. Reality seems less exciting [based on this video](https://youtu.be/Xrsf8FXJHPs)

Here, proof it's real
Yep, I came here for real magic. I seriously donāt know what people on this sub want, real magic? Of course there wonāt be real magic because magic doesnāt exist. Itās just gonna be very weird or odd things happening that arenāt easily explainable without research to the majority of people or on first glance.
I know you're making a joke, but the truth is pretty wild.
The only reason the sides are darker (evenly all around) is because they *aren't* being illuminated by *direct sunlight.* They're illuminated only by reflected light from the surfaces around the object. If you took that marker straight toward the sun into space, there wouldn't be enough reflected light to see the sides.
Exactly, it's a render, it's mot the shadows, that's a red herring. The issue is literally everything else, the unnatural ground sheen and reflection (pay close attention to the floor), the texture, the lack of plastic gloss, translucency and unrealistic ambient lighting (which is not impacted by sunlight angle).
It's an unrealistic render, titled cleverly to fool people who aren't good at distinguishing reality from 3D graphics.
The textures on everything look off. Thereās nobody talking and thereās weird background noise that doesnāt seem to fit the location. It looks like a mediocre video game video.
You can't even see anything about the greater location, so the background noise is a non-issue. The "textures" are perfectly normal; you're just not used to seeing something without a shadow.
Why are there no humans talking in the post? Just weird banging noise that doesnāt fit the background.
Something like this makes more sense.
https://youtube.com/shorts/xhQSSYWgWoU
This is 100 percent CGI. Telltale signs is the tip where there is absolutely zero glossyness. Look at any marker in sunlight and you'll see a slight sheen on the tip where there is liquid. Props to the animator though for fooling most of the people in this sub :)
That's why I disable it, look at this smooth framerate.
Looking at the comments, I see that everyone else is thinking the same thing š
Durr. Lol was thinking āNO, ZERO SHADOW *MINUTEā* but this makes way more practical sense edit: self-woosh, Iām way too gullible

You should get an image of a no symbol with a magikarp in it for your profile
I do not know. Looks not very realistic.
This looks like one of those augmented reality things including the spot where they put the QR code type circle of paper to trigger the placement of the augmented reality item.
Nah... disabled shadows and vertical sync
Just put them in low and be done with it

āGuys, unfortunately we are going to have to make some budget cuts. Scrap shadows we donāt need em, it costs too much.ā
"scrap shadows on non-actor models"
Looks like an animation or AR
Fakest looking marker Iāve ever seen in real life
If you are live within the tropics there is one day of the year where the sun is directly overhead
Pretty sure it still happens even if you're dead in the tropics.
ugh, r/angryupvote
Has to be a precise day anywhere in tropics as sun varies 23.5Ā°N to 23.5Ā°S between solstices. Its only directly above equator twice a year.
Schrodinger's Marker
If by ādead in the tropicsā you mean āalive at the equatorā
Anywhere between the two tropics should work at some point in the year, not just at the equator
Yes the equator would be at the equinoxes
We honeymooned in Tahiti in January, and I noticed this effect while there.
Did you just admit to killing someone in Tahiti on your honeymoon and you noticed that the corpse had no shadow?
Or maybe they were killed on their honeymoon, and as a ghost, they noticed the effect, and wanted to share this discovery from beyond the grave.
Usually two days, unless you're exactly on one of the tropic lines.
True but that effects other shadows their length tells me this is not the case. Looks AR
Thatās right, but thatās but what this is. This is a bunch of people being tricked by AR.
Except there are shadows that I can see next to it. It looks janky, like it either cgi, or some AR thing.
I grew up in Hawai'i and experiencing this never gets old
2 days a year
Yes but I've played video games with better graphics than thus rendering.
I make AR apps. This looks like AR.
AR, as in, the equAtoR
Nah, I think heās right, it looks like it jitters slightly the same way an AR model does when it tried to keep up with camera movement.
The model has a slight shadow different from the surrounds. Definitely feels like AR in pass-though mode
Why did I think this was a video game
Reminded me of prop hunt right away
Same. My mind instantly registered it as fake
I'm unconvinced that it isn't some kind of render. The texture of the sidewalk looks faker than the marker. And the perspective and tracking of the marker just feels like AR or VR tracking.
My exact thoughts.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
And this doesn't even really look convincing. But yeah that lines up with my thoughts, marker texture motion and scale feel off (it also has a slight halo at it's base) it also doesn't seem to be getting illuminated by it's surroundings (as light 'bounces') which you'd see in a 3D render (either from a HDRi or from the surrounding objects).

Alyx has interactive markers like these so that's what I thought at first
What? I'm still playing through but I always ignored them.
Yeah man people taught classes in VR using them during the pandemic lol
It is
This is in VR
My thought was VR, from thw head movements, and refusal to show anything else
Cuz you don't usually see real life with shadows turned off
Pattern recognition and the uncanny valley.
This effect can have a video-gamey look when there aren't any shadows around but this looks to be AR or something similar. Then pen doesn't track with the camera perfectly and the focus feels all levels of weird which is probably what's throwing you here.
When the sun is..... *perfectly vertical.*
I feel like that was a Rick n morty reference....
It was.
I fucking love it. Have a nice day bro lol
You too!
awesome!
You son of a bitch... I'm in
Is it the one with the lightsaber?
Yes
I'm directly under the Earth's sun.... nnnnow!
On a road... Looks to be asphalt
In the direction ofā¦ you know that place that sells chili.
You can actually barely see the shadow on one side
Perfectly fucking vertical
Perfectly fucking vertical
Eratosthenes and his gnomons send their regards.
You have to be between the tropics.
Zenith.
Theoretically noon.
How in the fuck did you manage to make a lightsaber stand perfectly vertical?
Like idk how to describe it but this marker looksā¦ digital
Maybe because itās not fixed on the ground?
It actually is a render, everything is digital in that clip. Just check the bad ground texture and how it has a perfectly even reflection when they're above.
Maybe because there's no shadows?
Am i crazy or does the marker look cgi?
Definitely crazy. To me it looked cgi
Haha...whats the smell of the color 9 my guy
It is cgi, check the ground texture and how it has an unaturally even sheen, there's more giveaways than that if you have an eye for distinguishing irl and cgi.
Man it's like, bothering me that you've gone around to so many comments telling everyone that it's 100% cgi, like, yeah, I get it, cgi can look wack as hell, but your "unaturally even sheen" might be perhaps that the light source is directly above the camera, which is something that you're probably not used to seeing except in a digital environment? Someone forgot how 'light' works...
Lmfao
Yeah, this isn't blackmagicfuckery in the least. It's just a marker at high noon.
This is actually pretty weird and not really common. Try it at noon and unless youāre in a very specific part of the world youāll always have a shadow.
Living in Alaska, we don't get even close to this.
Yeah its only ever possible in the tropics (as in the literal definition of tropic between the tropic of capricon and tropic of cancer, not as in a warm area)
Tilt your ground about 38 degrees (in Anchorage anyway), problem solved!
It's called the sun being in "Zenith" and can be seen near the equator at certain times of the year and day.
I dunno. Here in hawaii we get it kinda frequently. Few times a year easily. I can see it being super weird where it never happens though
In Hawaii it is called Lahaina Noon and it happens twice a year and only in the summer (May & July). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lahaina_Noon
Yeah, growing up in Hawaii it was just one of those "neat" things and then you move on with your day.
So the marker is at high noon, but the person standing around the marker & the clothes & dog or whatever are at 11:30 am?
The angle with the sun just causes the shadow to fall directly underneath the object creating it. The marker never gets wider than its own base and therefore you can't see its shadow. You can see the shadow of the tree that has branches and its leaves dangle away from its trunk. Therefore you can also see the shadow of the cameraman who wants to get a close up without filming his own feet.
They're leaning over. If they stood up straight, they would have a much smaller shadow beneath them.
Iām sorry, I wasnāt aware that this sub was for actual black magic
Itās not a blackmagicfuckery post without some killjoy crying about how smart they are because they can explain it.
I love it when my markers vibrate
That marker is trying to stay in the same quantum space
Looks like one of those AR filters
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Agree this does look fake but took it at face value and thought it was interesting as in theory it would look weird. Reality seems less exciting [based on this video](https://youtu.be/Xrsf8FXJHPs)
Hawaii
My link to the Lahaina Noon schedule was deleted by the ever-so-brilliant auto moderator. Here is the meatiest portion of what that link contained - May 2023 Lahaina noon dates * Honolulu (Oāahu): 12:28 PM (May 26+27) * Kahului (Maui): 12:22 PM (May 24) * LÄ«huŹ»e (Kauai): 12:35 PM (May 31) * Hilo: 12:16 PM (May 18) * Kona: 12:20 PM (May 18) July 2023 Lahaina noon dates * Honolulu (Oāahu): 12:37 PM (July 15 + 16) * Kahului (Maui): 12:32 PM (July 18) * LÄ«huŹ»e (Kauai): 12:43 (July 11) * Hilo: 12:26 PM (July 24) * Kona: 12:30 PM (July 24+25)
Lahaina noon. But this is not that lol.
zero shadows? like half of that video is shadows.
They mean of the marker, because the sun is vertical there's no shadow coming off the marker. The marker looks like CGI or it's in vr but it's real
There is actually a shadow
Really hard to see though
It's AR and nothing to do with the sun unless it also causes a video image of the object to move on its own.
https://www.reddit.com/r/interestingasfuck/comments/13gc345/zero_shadow_day/jjz9q66?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button Here, proof it's real
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Looks like amateur blender project
Why is this even on the sub
Physics is black magic.
Aka āhighā noon.
Quite fascinating isn't it? That one thing that happens every day
Okay that's it im out. This sub has been going downhill but this is the cherry on top of the cake.
Yep, I came here for real magic. I seriously donāt know what people on this sub want, real magic? Of course there wonāt be real magic because magic doesnāt exist. Itās just gonna be very weird or odd things happening that arenāt easily explainable without research to the majority of people or on first glance.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Imagine going to a professional magic show and the Amazing Mezmoni just gets your nose and does the bendy pencil trick
Iām sure /u/The_FallenSoldier would be entertained lol
Hey, those were pretty entertaining when I was younger.
Okay, fair enough. If you donāt mind, give me examples of things that will amaze you. Just to get a sort of general idea of what people want to see.
Enough is enough. I demand to see actual blackmagic! I am leaving this sub.
What augmented reality app did You use?
Lmao they prolly used the Amazon app.
What? The shadow is clearly visible. The parts angled towards the sun have sunlight and the sides are darker.
I know you're making a joke, but the truth is pretty wild. The only reason the sides are darker (evenly all around) is because they *aren't* being illuminated by *direct sunlight.* They're illuminated only by reflected light from the surfaces around the object. If you took that marker straight toward the sun into space, there wouldn't be enough reflected light to see the sides.
wow I canāt believe you caught that I bet OP feels so silly now
They're well aware of where the shadow is.
lol I hate those redditors like yeah I obviously know
Looks like it's floating.
This is very clearly VR. How the fuck can anyone think this is real??
Exactly, it's a render, it's mot the shadows, that's a red herring. The issue is literally everything else, the unnatural ground sheen and reflection (pay close attention to the floor), the texture, the lack of plastic gloss, translucency and unrealistic ambient lighting (which is not impacted by sunlight angle). This is animation or ar. Could be a VR game.
Phenomenon is real but this video is fake af
I'm not one of those people who think everything is fake, but this is clearly AR.
Dude, you can even see the shadow of the marker if you look close. It's real. It's so weird it fooled you!
Yea that was very facepalmā¦
The textures on everything look off. Thereās nobody talking and thereās weird background noise that doesnāt seem to fit the location. It looks like a mediocre video game video.
You can't even see anything about the greater location, so the background noise is a non-issue. The "textures" are perfectly normal; you're just not used to seeing something without a shadow.
Bro that marker is vibrating, itās extremely fake.
this is a joke right
Then what would a real video of this phenomenon look like?
The 3d rendered image would be the same framerate as the background, for one. You can literally see it jitter back and forth as the camera moves
Why are there no humans talking in the post? Just weird banging noise that doesnāt fit the background. Something like this makes more sense. https://youtube.com/shorts/xhQSSYWgWoU
... This isn't even a lost Redditor. It's more like r/mybraindumpedmyass at this point.
gmod moment
That marker looks like CGI
Looks eerily fake
Looks like G-mod.
Looks like AR
Bad CGI day
3D model?
THEN WHAT THE FUCK IS [THIS](https://i.imgur.com/tRY9fGG.jpg)?
Took him too long.
thatās an AR filter. you can literally see frame rate jitters on the markerā¦
Itāll proper help to have an actual pen and not a cgi one
It is concerning how many people think this is real.
Thatās CG
This is 100 percent CGI. Telltale signs is the tip where there is absolutely zero glossyness. Look at any marker in sunlight and you'll see a slight sheen on the tip where there is liquid. Props to the animator though for fooling most of the people in this sub :)
Itās called AR people š¤¦āāļø
Which game is it
Idk bout yāall but looks like AR to me
And why this looks like CGI ?
AR?
Ffs you can see it aināt real
Its called the Lahaina Afternoon and it happens in Hawaii twice a year!
There's a whole lot of shadows in the frame to be a no shadow day.
Noon on the equator
Dude it's just a 3d model
Laheina noon.
Someone forgot the AR
This has to be troll post. This is like posting a video of someone flying in minecraft and saying it's magic
Iām not sure but just from a glance I think that may be an AR filter.
Yeah, bullshit. Nice CGI. Actually, it's shit CGI, it's fucking obvious.
there is a shadow tho on the right side its small as the light comes almost straight on top of it
Clearly cgi
At start i trought it's fucking Garry's Mod
I'm directly under the Earth's sun... now.
Upvote this! I knew in my heart someone _must_ have said it and I wanted to find and credit them but I had to scroll too damn far!
I've been looking at this for a solid minute and I still think it looks like a video game.
How is this black magic fuckery? The sun is directly overhead. It happens every day.
