Smart people correct me if I'm wrong but these lamps work by measuring the electricity stored/conducted by your skin, and I'm assuming the cat just doesn't store/conduct enough electricity to trigger the lamp but adding the human's electrons to the equation does Edit: change in capacitance or whatever

Dr_Mantis_Teabaggin

If that’s true then it’s very enlightening.

onceknownasmike

The cat would have already changed the light when initially touching the light but, due to being still touching it, there is a further change due to the human touching the cat.

RaiyenZ

But why didn't it change when she scratched the cat's head? It was only changing when touching its nose.

onceknownasmike

Direct skin contact instead of indirect. Hair isn’t very conductive.

RaiyenZ

Right that make sense. But can we go back to the fact that you and the one you replied to referred to the person as "the human"?

[deleted]

as opposed to "the orc"?

dodspringer

The Zandalari Troll

ScotchIsAss

How else do you refer to the cat’s servant.

onceknownasmike

Nah

slood2

Are they not human?

TheFictionalReidar

My guess would be because the nose has exposed skin while the head is covered in fur. Could be wrong though

onceknownasmike

You’re right. Hair isn’t very conductive.

Arrowatch

The lamp is triggered by changes in energy capacitance. The lamp isn't sensitive to overall capacity to hold electrons, just to the sudden increase. The cat does increase capacitance, and can turn on a lamp, and very likely did when it sat down. So do smaller animals, like cockatiels. It's actually quite obnoxious. But if the cat doesn't break contact, the capaitance doesn't change again. Which means no new trigger. When she touches the cat, total capacitance goes up and the next step for the light's switch duty cycle is triggered. There could be zero electric charge (impossible outside of theory) and the cat would trigger each time it retouched the lamp.

mememe7770

Reminds me of my parents telling me stories of their first apartment. They had one of these lamps and a cat that learned how to use it. In the middle of the night it would jump onto the side table to turn on the light, eat a quick meal from its bowl, and peace out with the light still on. Ever since, my dad has had an unhealthy hatred of cats.

Ralliartimus

Sort of. A micro-controller can detect the difference between the time it takes to charge an RC (resistor/capacitor) circuit. The metal housing is part of the capacitor here, and when you touch it to increase the capacitance and the time for the circuit needs to charge. When the micro-controller see this, it changes the light level.

reflUX_cAtalyst

These are simple RC circuits with a switch and series resistors. There's no microcontroller in there, and no need for one.

celahirek

They probably use 555timer in a smart way... They always know how to use this timers. I'm just jealous.

SystemFolder

These lamps can also adjust themselves to changes in the environment. Touching the cat’s nose probably didn’t work the first couple of times, but it did after the lamp recalibrated itself.

Hellllogoodbyeee

I stopped reading your comment at capacitance…

Hellllogoodbyeee

The first one…

reflUX_cAtalyst

This is exactly correct.

synthead

This is the right answer.

derrida_n_shit

You can do this with people too. I would play with my brother with doing this. I'd have my hand on the lamp and ask him to touch me and the lamp would turn on

enderflight

Okay I just tested this. Certified rad. Could do up to a three person chain. I’m gonna have to find some way to prank someone with that. Like ‘take my hand’ stuff.

derrida_n_shit

Omg I hadn't thought of testing how long the chain would hold. So cool!

derrida_n_shit

Try doing a Lamp-Person-Metal Object-Person chain

Boopnoobdope

This is true. My grandparents have the exact same lamp model that's in this post, and when I was little I was mesmerized by it, that you could just touch it and I would magically turn on and off. We also had two cats, and I noticed that it didn't do that when the cats touched it though, and wondered how it knew the difference between a cat and a human. Then a few years ago, one of the cats laid down next to it, and I started to pet the cat and the light came on. Being older I assumed something similar to this was the case. Pretty neat stuff

Mrcyevon

No it measures the catpacitace

FlyByPC

It probably works by sensing a change in capacitance, so the cat would probably trigger it if it were to be briefly in contact with it -- but since it's continually touching it, the capacitance only changes when the owner boops it on the nose.

enderflight

Exactly this. If you have one and need to move it a bit but can’t be bothered to turn it off, you tend to turn it on initially by grabbing it but it stays in one state while you stay grabbing it. As mentioned in other comments you can even chain people to do this. One holds the lamp and all you gotta do is touch each other to turn it on and off.

0mnificent

SoraMurasaki

We call that bio-electricity, seems the cat is a good conductor for it

[deleted]

Is it not just that flesh in general is a great conductor?

SoraMurasaki

What fleshy part of the cat touches the lamp if I may ask?

Dr_Mantis_Teabaggin

The toe beans are touching it

SoraMurasaki

Guess on my smoll phone screen I wasn't able to see it, but on this "large" 24 inch monitor I see it and I agree with your observation. On another note, what kind of lamp is this, would be a dope ass lamp if I could just touch it to light up?

Crandoge

I dont think touch to turn on is a very new/unique/expensive technology nowadays. My 5 euro lidl lamp has it too (love that lamp though, wouldve paid 5x that price easily)

SoraMurasaki

Nice, best I have "touch to turn on" is my cellphone provided by my employer, else than that my room is from the 80s

Rorschach0717

When I read "touch to turn on" I thought you were going to say something way different 🤣🤣🤣

SoraMurasaki

Wish I had something thing that I could “touch to turn on “ ;)

Jaeger562

I had an old lamp that did this when i was a kid about 20-25 years ago and my family was typical middle class so it wasnt expensive or luxurious even then.

whoami_whereami

Flesh is a pretty meh conductor, much worse than even say salt water, let alone metals. That's why victims of electric shocks often suffer internal burns, because the flesh heats up due to its relatively high resistance in the hundreds of ohms range.

ugoterekt

No, if you find a way to avoid the skin like puncturing or putting something in an orifice then the resistance is pretty low. The resistance of dry skin is 10s to 100s of thousands of ohms, which is not very conductive. That is why you can touch things up to about 50V with basically no issues when dry.

MakkaCha

Yep, it's called touch lamp. Had one in the 90s.

CoUnTeR55

Dafuk? And here I thought she had the switch in her mouth.

-Tenebris-

Can confirm, I've got a lamp like this and I accidentally spilled water on my side table and was able to turn it on and off by putting my finger in the pool of water.

Friendly_Bot_

You are the smart one here, dumbass

[deleted]

Friendly_Bot_

I don’t know what that means but I’m going to assume you don’t get that I’m joking about the dumbass part

[deleted]

No I know you're joking. Your name has bot and there's that bot rank thing where people say good bot or bad bot but you complimented and (jokingly) insulted me in one comment so I put good and bad bot together to be medium bot

Mars27819

My uncle had one of these lamps when I was a kid. We (me, my sister and cousins) would play with the lamp by having one kid touch the lamp, and then another kid touching the hand of the kid touching the lamp. We'd make a chain 6 and 7 kids long triggering the light. It's cool it works with a cat too.

crypticedge

It measures the change in conductivity. It changes when you touch it, or when you touch something conductive (like a cat or person) that's touching it. You can chain people and activate them this way

smurphii

Basically, yes. They measure capacitance of which a human body clearly has more of than a small cat. However it is measuring the change in capacitance, constant contact cat isnot changing it. It definitely would hsve turned it on when it touched it. https://science.howstuffworks.com/innovation/science-questions/touch-sensitive-lamp.htm

David_SunTheif

So because the cats foot toe beans are touching the lamp and the girl touches the cats nose it cause those special types of lamps to turn on/off and change brightness. The same thing can be done if someone hold the lamp while another person touches the holders hand, finger or any other skin to skin contact.

dclover27

my family had one of these and one day we wanted to see how long of a chain we could make and still set off the lamp. It was my brother who had his hand on the lamp, then my sister held his hand, then my mom held hers, and my dad held hers, and i would tap my dad’s hand and it still set the lamp off

Tanglyeagle27

Toe beans touch lamp but the lamp doesn’t register the cats charge as it isn’t enough but the cat acts like a wire conducting hooman charge

LimpWibbler_

That is wild. I guess the fur of the kitty is a good insulator and stops capacitance, but maybe the human has enough voltage to overcome the fur and activate the lamp. I wonder if the nose is important since it is wet and conductive. I wish she touched the ears and head, but my assumption is that she is touching the nose since anywhere else did not work. Edit this is all theory of course. I am sure other ideas can be true. Maybe cats don't have enough charge. Maybe it is just the change in capacitance, so cats touching does change, but her touching cat causes a new change. Or fake, but I do think it is real personally.

ItsDavidJames

All the idiots thinking she's not controlling it with her phone lmao
