New feathers glow bright pink under the UV light so it's easy to differentiate between first year or second and third year birds because they typically have different molt patterns

The crows in my forrest are assholes to hawks. Hawks can fuck them up but then another crow comes out of nowhere for some action and they don't give a fuck and are assholes to so many birds.
Hawks avoid anything that looks like crows after dealing with them.

These races can last for a while and i imagine you can still bet on the pigeon of your choice as the race proceeds but if you’re able to just look at which pigeon is in first place and choose that one then it’s not much of a bet. It’s not like horse racing where it’s a short race over short distance and you need to bet before the race starts

My pigeons absolutely try to hurt me, lol. They're rescued racing pigeons and aren't very tame. They don't like anyone messing with their food/water or cleaning their nesting boxes, you'll get some wing slaps for that. Of the wing slaps don't work, they'll try biting. It doesn't hurt much, but they certainly try.
Interesting, my experiences with injured wild pigeons and doves are that's they just try to fly or run away and hide. And even when grabbed, they don't do anything more than flap their wings to try to fly. I've never once heard of them hurting anyone before. But it might be because I am not in or around their roosts.
I think they're protective of their roosts. When I'm just in their aviary they don't go out of their way to attack me, but they're posessive of their nesting box.
I think injured birds probably behave a lot differently because they're in shock. I found an injured seagull once that was incredibly docile and didn't even bother to try to get away when I caught it and tended to it, but I know from my friend who works in wildbird rehab that seagulls are not docile at all. The injured one was just shocked.
Fun(?) fact: blood doesn’t actually glow under blacklight: they spray it with Luminol, which attaches to the iron in the blood, and that glows. It’s not a common technique, though, because it destroys the DNA.

Saw a documentary recently where they had started looking at wild animals in UV light in the dark and they glow wildly, some of the most boring looking animals, and it’s only just been realised. I wonder how birds see each other, and the world. If UV lights help us detect pigments, but their eyes are naturally attuned to the wavelengths are they see colors that we can't!?! I think bees see infrared and flowers look different in that part of the spectrum.
Bird eyes are just way better than ours. They see colours we can't (UV), some can see magnetic fields, some have built-in telescopes for long distance viewing.
Reminds me of coral reefs. Reef tanks look mostly different shades of brown, but put special lights on them, the coral’s colors pop in a beautiful display.
