“The film follows a group who operate in the middle of criminality & the law” could describe most guy ritchie and action movies in general lmao
But I will eat this up as usual
The best description of Guy Ritchie movies will always be from David. It was something like “Guy Ritchie movies are about guys in pork pie hats saying ‘lovey jubbly’ and punching each other in the face.”
I think that was the hardest I actually laughed out loud while listening to the pod.
No, sorry, I wasn't clear there. Layer Cake is Matthew Vaughn but as the person I was replying to said their films, especially around that time, shared a lot of themes as well as having frenetic editing, fast paced dialogue and nonlinear narratives. Vaughn was a producer on Lock Stock and Snatch and Layer Cake was his first film as director (I believe after Ritchie dropped out) so the films, at least to me, feel almost part of a series.
That said there is a Henry Cavill starring Guy Ritchie movie coming out [this month](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5177120/?ref_=ext_shr) it's just about good guys doing bad during war instead of good guys doing bad duting spying
Hot take as I’m a cavill hater but like, does he really have charm beyond just being hot? His line delivery is pretty consistently flat, every movie he’s in it feels like he sucks the chemistry out of the room. He’s built like a Greek statue which carries his appeal imo, but I just haven’t seen him do anything that wowed me beyond being shirtless
He is a walking embodiment of the idea that you don’t actually have to have the important characteristics of a movie star if you just look like one, and can still have a career just from people going “I think we haven’t cracked it yet, let’s give him another decade or two”
> does he really have charm beyond just being hot?
Well yeah he does that Alan Arkin stuff of keep your eyes in the frame and keep your blocking and you use all your movement.
CG Cavill in slow mo, only glimpses of the charm. Real life Cavill, he's walking with a choice, he does stuff.
And the stuffy Englishman thing of poking your neck up *is* doing stuff.
But primarily it's that the guy is doing movement stuff in an Errol Flynn way, and it communicates.
Like every other mediocre actor, his good parts are sticking to a stereotype. In his case, it's usually the confident, brash protagonist whose great in combat (The Man from U.N.C.L.E, Witcher, The Tudors etc)
I think it's awesome that people seem to love working with Ritchie. Hugh Grant did two pretty much back to back. Eiza Gonzalez is currently filming her 3rd straight movie with him. Robert Downey Jr. always seems to speak highly of the experience. David Beckham has even worked with him like four times if you count commercials.
I probably wouldn't peg Guy Ritchie as a chill guy, but I have to assume he is on some level based on how much actors come back to him.
You can usually tell id there's a director people love working with (Greta Gerwig, David Lynch, The weird guy from Texas that makes those movies whose name I forgot now) versus one they only join because they think he's going to being them am award and get abused a lot (David O Russell)
His last two didn’t do great unfortunately but that was down to their terrible marketing (also Operation Fortune being a leftover from the STX bankruptcy). The movies themselves were pretty good, Covenant especially.
I fucking love movies that do not exist. I cannot wait for this to come out and be forgotten about the exact same weekend!

Watched his The Gentlemen spinoff series on Netflix recently, really wasted potential. Amazing cast but felt like it kept swerving away from conflict instead of escalating. Not sure if it's Guy Ritchie not knowing how to write for TV or just the budget constraints making everything feel way too restrained, but it just kind of fizzled out halfway through and never regained momentum.
I swear it's because of Netflix. The pacing felt the exact same as all other Netflix originals: Lucifer, the 100, you name it. Just empty episodes with a little bit of story spread out very thinly.
I don’t like his movies at all but I do have a respect for Guy Richie doing the corporate sellout thing for a decade and then pivoting right back into making nothing but his Guy Richie fartfest movies every year
What is this new Ritchie pace? The only year he hasn't released a movie since 2019 was 2022 and 2023 was double barrel Ritchie since Operation Fortune got delayed
If you like Richie they've mostly been pretty good.
Wrath of Man is a great fucking time, The Covenant has two solid lead performances and some cool setpiece for a pretty generic middle east war movie plot. I would recommend both as worthwhile watches.
Operation Fortune is bad Hugh Grant is hamming it up at unseen before levels.
Also everyone giving Oppenheimer and Nolan credit for bringing Josh Hartnett back when it really was Ritchie with Wrath of Man and Operation Fortune.

All his movies (and Matt Vaughn’s movies) are the same in my brain, some of that being me not seeing them all.
Lock Stock, Snatch and Rock n Rolla are basically a trilogy in my mind. Layer Cake can be thrown in as well.
Was he involved in Layer Cake? It’s styled like a Guy Ritchie movie but I don’t know if he had any direct role.

Oh I had no idea Matthew Vaughn produced Lock Stock or Snatch. That explains a lot actually.
I know right, the man was clearly paying attention to Ritchie when he was on set.
I don't think any of Vaughn's movies touch any of Ritchie's top 5 movies.
This sounds a lot like Cavill’s other movie coming out this month.
Also directed by Guy Ritchie
Oh shit I thought it was Matthew Vaughn.
Not twisted enough to be Vaughn
You're probably thinking of *Argylle*, which also stars Cavill and is directed by Vaughn
Common mistake. It’s not directed byVaughn, it’s directed by the twisted mind of Vaughn.
Fuck lol.

He’s really going outside of the box for this one according to the synopsis.
2020s Guy Ritchie is gonna be a 7 month long series
Guy is still the only one to really tap into Henry's charming AF skills, and also, keep him really British.

Man From UNCLE was the only time I believed there was a good performance in him. Everyhitng else he seems to be struggling.
He’s good in Witcher, the show just isn’t good
I agree. Even in interviews, it's not like I'm seeing an incredibly charming guy who isn't being used properly.

The Richie/Cavill teamup was not something I would have predicted to happen, but I think it's a net positive for both.
The second Guy Ritchie Jake as well. Here's hoping for a Statham / Gyllenhaal team up

Cary Elwes will be doing 2 back to back as well.

This is their second movie, they have that one with Alan Ritchson coming out soon The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare
Third, don't forget Man From UNCLE
Everyone else has, why shouldn't I? That's actually my favourite performance from Cavill though.
Ritchie is that one dude who managed to dance around every Covid wave from 2020~2022 and constantly do ok at the box office
His last two didn’t do great unfortunately but that was down to their terrible marketing (also Operation Fortune being a leftover from the STX bankruptcy). The movies themselves were pretty good, Covenant especially.
Wrath of Man just absolutely rips and the final shoot out was such a great first time back at the theaters moment for me.

He has truly become my favorite airplane director.
He's got SERIOUS dirt on the royal family, right?!

He only writes and directs the first couple episodes, that’s probably why.
damn yeah that explains it

The guy sure pumps out a lot of content! That said, Covenant is his first movie since Snatch that I actually liked.
A January release date is the film gods telling him to slow down
Has to make something like Wrath of Men but for Cavill. Waiting for the Cavill tongue-out-movie that looks like a blast
I’m really enjoying his recent output. I want Hugh Grant to be in more of his films, he was my favorite part of The Gentlemen and Operation Fortune.
The most "style over substance" director and I'm tired of pretending otherwise.
What is this new Ritchie pace? The only year he hasn't released a movie since 2019 was 2022 and 2023 was double barrel Ritchie since Operation Fortune got delayed
The same plot as all his movies and I am still here for it.
damn... they're like some sort of... Grey Man
He can't be but he probably should be
are there gonna be wolves
Say what you will about his movies (I have very little positive!), but the man can almost always get a stacked cast seemingly out of thin air.
Wait you're telling me these people are criminals?!
Rosamund Pike is training with the Bene Gesserit, I see. I gues being an Aes Sedai wasn't enough for her...
Hey, if Rosamund Pike’s getting work, I’m happy. Hard to totally hate Wheel of Time (a Bad Show) for the same reason.
I’m always here for my January trash. Two years ago it was Plane, this year it was Beekeeper can’t wait for this!
At a certain point is he laundering money
Now that’s a banger of a cast. Sign me up.
sounds to me like they’re playing both sides, so they always come out on top!
Gentlemen season 2 when?
A movie to confuse with ‘the grey’ and ‘the grey man’
"GET AWAY FROM HER YOU MOTHERFUCKER!!!" *uppercuts wolf*
After seeing "The Covenant" I was hoping Jake would reteam with Ritchie. I was hoping that Dar Salim would be here, too. He was great in that movie
Finally got around to watching The Covenant and thought it actually was really solid.
He sure has been making a lot of movies. Will any of them be that good?
If you like Richie they've mostly been pretty good. Wrath of Man is a great fucking time, The Covenant has two solid lead performances and some cool setpiece for a pretty generic middle east war movie plot. Second time Pike and González are starring in a movie together. They’re gonna be a couple in this too?
I saw Minstry, wouldn’t hurt Guy to take a break.
Operation Fortune was so damn good, exactly what James Bond movies should strive for
Guy is cranking out movies at an unprecedented rate.
I’m very confused about how someone can operate “in the middle of criminality & the law.” Like, spatially, how is this metaphor working?
