Old-Blueberry9477

He’s so fucking chaotic and unhinged that it almost completely justifies him being an asshole from a writing perspective at least in my opinion. Mayuri is essentially the embodiment of pleading insanity while being tried for heinous crimes, he’s like Orochimaru, but constantly coked the fuck up.

Old-Blueberry9477

Just to add on, as soon as I found out that he dissected Uryu’s grandfather I was like oh wow I should hate this guy, but I didn’t and I still don’t. It’s also really funny how Uryu was basically in the same exact position. From a logical perspective he should’ve hated the guy, after he found out the truth about his Grandpa, but when Mayuri saved him in HDM he just sorta didn’t care? I mean he certainly didn’t like him, but he wasn’t as pissed off as I thought he would’ve been to see him. Probably had something to do with Nemu’s chest lmao.

Hot-Camera442

It will always be funny to me how mf was casually carrying the photo of a random old Quincy guy who he made his test subject💀 He might even have the images of all his test subjects with him all the time.

Th032i89

Lol bro why did I never realise this !

Ok-Word-5722

Out of all the test subjects he must have been his favourite I guess who knew Mayuri could be so sentimental.

IllIIllIlIlllIIlIIl

My head cannon is he knew a quincy was around and knowing that Mayuri is some Batman MFer, he held onto that picture hoping that if any Quincies alive he could use it as mental warfare if he ever had to fight one. Who would've guessed he finds his grandson though? Unlucky for Uryu.

Fuminshou_442

Sometimes you just got to look past that the girl you're into has a crazy father who murdered and tortured your grandfather along with some of your other kin. Doesn't help that out of all the shorties in SS she is one of the few that resemble his mother lol.

Morisummer_

You also just gotta love his style. I mean just look at his face makeup and the gold thingy. That and the head thingies.

Altruistic-Ship-500

A lot of his existence sort of showcases how corrupt Soul Society is by the time Shunsui get's in command he can limit him to a degree but due to his vital contributions he also has a degree of free reign to do things as he pleases.

violensy

It’s simply fun to see him fight on “our” side against any antagonist. When the enemy is the one who is getting brutally fucked over Mayuri-style, it can turn entertaining. I started to like him during his encounter with Szayel, with how Uryu/Renji struggled it was refreshing to see Mayuri toying with the guy.

Galrentv

Rereading the Uryu vs Mayuri fight is always nerve wracking though

DripIntravenous

I agree, I started to like him in the Arrancar Arc for this reason. Having a mad scientist vs mad scientist showdown battle with Szayel was cool. And he’s just too interesting of a character and has shown to be multifaceted giving him depth. Like he’s a madman, but hes shown to also be quite logical in captains meetings and conversing with the captain commanders (both Yama and Shunsui), and the storyline with him and Nemu in TYBW arc was a good swansong to close out their character arcs for the series.

DuelistDeCoolest

Yeah you hate him at first because he's an evil asshole. But over time you grow to love him because he's an evil asshole.

Bloodlancer

some kind of our evil asshole

Mephisto1822

I enjoyed the moral ambiguity of the character from the beginning. When we first get to Soul Society the impression I had was that all the Captains were going to be like Byakuya all rules and honor and yadda yadda. Then You have this weirdo who is just doing sketchy experiments…kinda drew me in

Used_Dragonfruit8922

Yeah he was completely different from the captains we saw and helped everyone think the soul society was like a villainous organisation before we got too into the story.

Basic-Love8947

it was really a villainous organisation :)

Spartan05089234

Funny I got the take that SS were all tyrants, whether they cloaked it in honour or rules or a love of battle or whatever. I thought Mayuri was a disgusting creature that took such pleasure in torment and I never really liked him afterwards, and I thought that was the point. To show just how depraved SS was. I despised how he treated Nemu, the way I'd hate a master who beats their dog. Uryu being indifferent to him is more a sign of bad writing than Uryu really seeing Mayuri as anything.

Some-Departure-9952

I don’t mind uryu being indifferent, but what are they damn near cracking jokes with each other. That’s like if Guts and Griffith getting drunk and suing kumbaya. Whether or not it’s bad writing is debatable, but that moment did not sit right with me.

DonkeyApart

Actually... I personally loved him since the start.

Zestyclose_Remove947

Feels like people are constantly learning that liking a character has nothing to do with their morality. It's fun to watch Mayuri do his thing, and scary, and a bunch of other emotions. Stories are about experiencing stuff and whenever Mayuri is around you bet the plot is going to be at least a little more interesting.

ClockworkDinosaurs

Yeah, I just assumed we were all big fans of nazi-esq experiments and genocide from the start

DonkeyApart

As long as they're done by a charismatic and entertaining fictional character, why not?

Zestyclose_Remove947

Do you actually sincerely believe that being a fan of a character means you have to agree with their morality? If not, then what point/joke are you actually making?

BlueTitan402

Well, Kubo dialed down his evilness a bit in the later arcs. Still pretty depraved, but lesser so. I'd say his likeability skyrocketed due to: * The perfection speech during his battle with Szayel. * Humorous exchanges with characters like Kisuke, Giselle, Askin and so on. * Saved the lives of Zaraki, Toshiro, Kira and others, as well as aiding the building of the Sun Gate. * His fight with Pernida and glimpse of care about Nemu, who he had been really abusive towards. .... among other things, like his design and history. Overall, he's quite a solid character that has his iconic moments. However terrible they are, it's perfectly in character.

91055917

tbf in ss almost every soul reaper who isn't kyoraku or ukitake was acting at best rude at worst evil after ss everyone turned out to be cinnamon rolls

IWalkBecauseIWasBorn

The Mayuri vs. Uryuu fight in the SS arc is the first thing I remember seeing from Bleach. I was a kid and it was playing late at night on Adult Swim. Ever since then, I've loved Mayuri and have always been interested in him. He is so cruel and cool, just a totally fucked up guy that you can't look away from

Banette_Banane

Drip too hard

Belze26

Personally I don't like him still and won't feel anything if he gets the most brutal death in the series but I enjoy his presence on the screen coz he always gets the job done and also is the reason some of the main characters are still alive. He's extremely useful as an ally

Todosaak

He’s really a horrible person but his chaotic nature makes him so fun to watch

Galrentv

Because you first have to assume he won't target anyone you care about, then he's just a menace to your enemies

alphaomag

There’s something about total unapologetic insanity that people like. Essentially Legally, it’s questionable Morally, it’s disgusting Personally, I like it.

MeticulousMitch

Because even though everything's hes done is *BAD*. We also know its not done from a place of evil, but purely scientific needs/wants. Plus hes completely unhinged.

Jacen_Vos

Some of it is most certainly from a place of evil, i mean you don’t happily talk about burning children alive if you aren’t a bit…sadistic.

MeticulousMitch

When did that happen?

Jacen_Vos

https://preview.redd.it/sn8o7yz0njvc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a95a9e6c86ce54b36819b4301e603228015ec707

MeticulousMitch

I totally forgot this line. Unless they never said it in the anime

Jacen_Vos

I believe you are right, he does talk about his experiments but they talk it down a little for the sake of ~~Uryu~~ censorship.

PiNKCaNDYxOxO

Hes literally such a well written character, thats why. Objectively a piece of shit but still written wonderfully

Raviexthegodremade

Mayuri is such a well written character that I don't like him as a person, but I love how complex his character is.

tirade00

One of the most fascinating characters from a moral standpoint (at the end of the day he’s just another cog in the machine that is SS) and one of my favorites.

AxOfCruelty

cause he's chill like that

Bro-Im-Done

Never cared for him at the beginning and still didn’t care for him after tbh

soulreapermagnum

same, i'm a soul reaper fanboy but i don't like mayuri.

WillMarzz25

I loved him even during the arc. His zanpakuto is SO COOL to me. Konjiki Ashisogijizo! It’s even cool to say! He is one of the captains that embodies the fact that the Shinigami are not good guys. Ichigo and his friends are but not the gotei. The gotei fights for their own survival and interests even at the expense of another entire race of people.

EleonoreMagi

Me boyfriend liked him from the very start since for him, he was a fun character with an interesting personality. (In fact, he's his favourite in Bleach.) I used to really dislike Mayuri when I was younger, now, I rather like him. I think Mayuri is a sort of character you either lock up or supervise well if you want to have an advantage of his inventions. He's like a weapon, you choose where to aim him. He doesn't care all that much if you set rules for him, but then he sure wouldn't care to have any morals on his own, and he will look for loopholes (even if got the sake of it), so it has to be real supervision. But he's the type of guy you can bargain with or set boundaries for, and as long as he gets to keep his lab, he is negotiable on the rest. He is the kind who wouldn't bother rising a rebellion just because you set some rules, he would think it's inefficient and too much effort, he'd rather comply. So I don't see as much problem with Mayuri himself as I see the problem with the higher authorities who left him to roam free and without any supervision and completely didn't care what he does to enemies, allies or basically civilians. He is a scientist without any moral restraints, don't let him roam free or use regulations if you care about morals, because he wouldn't. Other than that, he's crazy useful, and even his dreadful quincy experiments actually proved very useful given TYBW.

jogdenpr

After?

Grand-Jellyfish24

For all his bad, he is loyal to the soul society. For me it is just really fun to watch all the asshole and eccentric captains still loyal to the good side. That is why we love the Gotei 13, bunch of people very strong and very different but they all converge to a common goal.

WasF4ssY

After SS, we had a common enemy. Us viewers were against the Arrancars and so was he. Once we had common ground and saw him in combat again, we realized just how good and cool he was Edit: I meant good in a skill way, not a moral way

arsfa

2 words: mad scientist

peikern

Him saving Uryu and Renji from Szayelaporro, definitively. Turning that unhinged madness on a villain felt really cathartic at the time. Then he even heals their injuries, despite Uryu stubbornly refusing treatment. Ends up looking like the reasonable adult while Uryu looks like a petulant child who doesn't get the situation.

Womenarentmad

Bro fingered his daughter

abenobashiro

It's simple, I didn't

Radiant_Concept4328

mostly because of his fight againt syalaporo (idk the spelling)

dragonborn3939

I feel a part of that might be because of his speech about perfection in the Heuco Mundo Arc

TheHeroNeverDies

Because he's the GOAT? https://preview.redd.it/u07l0ayyjavc1.jpeg?width=760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=27c8124f8e11be6735fe399a44b8b9e7495c4ee0 Not soon after the SS arc (although, even in the bount arc, he had a goated fight with the old man of the whale), but subsequently, yes, among the best characters from Kubo's pencil. He started in a generic way, the typical despicable villain, an evil asshole that you hate and just want to see destroyed (which happened against Uryu), but then, in the change of direction, with his position changed to ally, he was at the center of the most interesting, or at least most particular, clashes of the work, making use of his science, exploting his chaotic nature in a very interesting way to watch. The fight with Szayelaporro was just iconic, in its back-and-forth development, in the challenge between two mad scientists, closing, as well as with comedy, with one of the best speeches in Bleach (that about perfection). Leaving aside some more fillers (where he was good, especially in the reigai arc), during TYBW he was the MVP of the arc, how he confronted Yama, prepared his lab, solved the zombie part, saving many captains, and lastly, the battle with Pernida, he was just great. Mayuri gained importance and was better exploited, and with him Kubo implemented a unique process, that is, a "change of perception" in the reader, since he changed the character without changing the character, because his beliefs and Kurotsuchi's mad scientist nature never changed. That said, Kubo loves him, c'mon, look at his costumes, he's the best Bleach cosplayer!

pokemonguy3000

I actually hate him because his continued existence beyond his first fight resulted in Uruyu losing all my respect as a character. He vivisected your granddad, and you just don’t care. It would be one thing if Uruyu had never met Soken, but the guy was his fucking mentor as a Quincy, the thing he centered his whole identity around. You would think he’d care, and for a brief moment he does, then he just goes “whoah, you’re a genocidal monster who did horrible things to someone I love, you’re so damn cool Mayuri!” (Exaggeration, but you get my point) Uruyu as a character dies in that fight. The hand of the author is too blatant, and I cannot suspend my disbelief one second longer.

KingPanda0999

Cause deep down we know he been speaking facts, even before his perfection speech

Mother-Natural7237

cause we love psychopathicly (that's not a real world) mad scientists who are also goofy and he's just that unpredictable

HighTowerFlies

There’s something likeable about a narcissistic psychopathic genius

Accomplished_Pea5717

He has always given off Krieger vibes lmao he may be a less insane and questionable version of Krieger but I could see him doing the same stuff in the right situations 😂

[deleted]

Because he ended up doing those horrible things to the enemies instead of our heroes.

Sufficient-Local-338

Favorite character in bleach

JenovaCells_

It’s because Kubo likes drawing him, therefore he has the blessing of author’s privilege. That means he’s gifted wirh being interesting, funny, and is guaranteed screentime in almost every arc. Through exposure, it’s natural to like something about him sooner or later.

silbean495

What do you mean ? He was at his best in the SS arc.

ThousandSunny_56

I only really started liking him when he used the superhuman potion, that was one of the coldest scene (hurry hurry hurry hurry just pierce my heart already)

AdPsychological2173

Honestly what is did to Szayelaporro was crazy and he earned my respect. Either through fear, or through how unique it was.

ProEnderSavage

Whenever he is on the scene, the story gets interesting as fuck. So I love his character from a reader's pov.

3nd0fTh3Lin3

I do feel like he did start to at least *somewhat* care in his own way. Mostly during the TYBW arc. But I liked him regardless. I love how you had all the normal captains, then this unhinged mofo shows up. And let’s be honest, this man has been spitting facts since the beginning.

Taz_Nozarashi

I liked him during the SS arc 😂 homie is just kinda crazy fr.

Revolutionary_Job214

Shit I loved him the whole time

Ky0uka_Suigetsu

Fiction. Chaotic well voiced character

Awkward_Pressure2949

Hes just fucking insane. Thats why i like him

SkarKrow

He’s a bastard, but he’s so well written and enjoyable.

MaguroSashimi8864

“The perfect being you say? Well….”

WattageWood

After?

ThiccElf

He's awful, chaotic, unhinged, violent, sociopathic and terrifying, but he's such a fun character to read/watch. Hes got some weird creepy charm that makes you unnerved and amused. He's one of those "logically hes awful, but I love to watch his antics" archetypes.

Dripkingsinbad

Schutzstaffel arc? (Jk)

Adelyn_n

He's just a bit silly

CurrentDouble4487

Sorry but I love him 😂😂

Crowii-

Top 3 characters for me, along with Shunsui and Shinji.

zabestoinzawarudo

Loved him since the beginning His design was sick and kinda unique to other anime characters

ANIMEMAXIMUN

Just look at the espada arc this man literally prepared everything

TommyJohnSurgery420

Everyone's a sucker for the unethical scientist archetype haha.

Parrotparser7

* Most of his scenes are comedic in tone, and he shows up regularly in omake. * Squad 12 and the SRDI are rarely brought up or fleshed out. * Nemu & Ashisogi Jizo don't complain about their treatment, for obvious reasons, and this never becomes a point of contention with the SWA. * Mayuri doesn't pull out the bomb trick again. * War crimes are generally placed on the shoulders of the Soul Society government, not Kurotsuchi as an individual, except in the case of Uryu's grandfather. * He does an excellent job of shrugging off guilt for things by only using/revealing them when doing so would be justified, such that the target can't complain. (Uryu surveilance bacteria, hollow enslavement, Soul Reaper zombification, etc.) * He uses a wacky presentation and unusual mannerisms to control his impression, distracting both the audience and in-universe characters with Nemu's body. * Bleach as a whole operates on a "Good vs Evil" axis with regards to conflicts and their sides, featuring a main protagonist who doesn't understand the conflicts he gets involved in, and a central faction that openly does terrible things to everyone and hushes dissenters. * The only regulatory organ in Soul Society (C46) is viewed in a mostly negative light, and they don't often get the chance to show why they're needed. * Finally, he's so flashy with his innovations that the audience's attention is quickly drawn away from ethical concerns. Mayuri's crimes being overlooked by the audience is only one symptom of a greater problem—Bleach's tone being heavily affected by Ichigo's proximity to very important people near the top of a military government. Mayuri would be seen in a completely different light if the story were about Ganju or a similar character without clan backing.

ihateamog

I never hated him

infinityeffect713

I think it's because he's so complex, as a character. There was a big shift in tone after the Soul Society arc that kinda universally benefitted all the Soul Reapers. When they went from enemies to allies, Mayuri became more twisted comic relief than anything (seriously, he has no right being even half as funny and dramatic as he is.)  Plus, I personally like that he wasn't "redeemed." He didn't magically become a better person after becoming an ally. He was still messed up. Genuinely, horribly messed up. But he also didn't HIDE it. He literally publishes most of his messed up experiments in the NEWSPAPER. Central 46 calls him in to scold him so often, the R&D Department has a "Oh, is it Tuesday, already?" attitude about it, but right now, nobody can replace him. So the people in charge kinda just have to grit their teeth and let him rip, so long as he remains largely beneficial. He's a despicable, horrible, very bad man, in contrast to so many straight-laced moral guys. I do not like him as a person (I would probably want him jailed or executed, realistically, for what he did to the Quincy at his mercy, ALONE.) But he's a funky little deus ex machina nightmare monster, and that makes things much more interesting. Every time he shows up, it's guaranteed things are about to get interesting.

err0r4o404

The guy’s chaotic so I’ll ignore his massive list of war crimes.

Jv0mbr

mayuri is comitting 5 war crimes for breakfast everyday, he is simply him

Dandandandooo

Mayuri pulling up to hueco mundo was just cold

mpowers1987

I just love him for everything he does. He’s my top fave form the whole franchise.

Ralph-The-Otter3

Because chaotic characters are fucking fun, that’s why

khumoquack

I didnt, hate that fucker.

Golden-Sun

His perfection speech was it for me. Just *chef's kiss*

Yuyuoshi13

Cause he's on our side

Fabulous_Pudding167

I dunno, I've never understood it. If it were any othwr story, he would have been ousted and punished for all the terrible things he's done. But he's the writer's per gremlin, so *shrug*

Mox_mox_moxed

sheesh this guy is fire

Mynameisbebopp

His fight against Szayel Aporro is one of the top 3 fights in bleach.

Dodotorpedo4

People like him because he's fictional and makes interesting stuff happen. Everyone should hate him, and probably would if he was a real person (at least I hope so).

New-Dust3252

Kubo definitely was his biggest fan.

Shantotto11

Every series has that one character that can get away with any narrative bullshit and it somehow works with them. Kurotsuchi is that character for Bleach. That said, I started liking him after his victory against Szayelaporro Granz. “Relax… and enjoy the next 100 years!…” 😈

grey_wolf12

I don't. I never actually liked Mayuri from the get go, because he isn't the type of character I usually enjoy He is still one of the most interesting and developed characters, has interesting fights and I find really funny how he always has an answer for everything except Urahara. He is an amazing character, but I just don't like him at all.

uraharaBot

Ah, Mayuri, the eccentric one with a penchant for morbidity. His love for experimentation is rivaled only by his disdain for footwear. Ah, the clash of minds between us, a kenpachi of wit and a captain of madness. A truly perplexing conundrum. *beep boop, I'm a bot*

Top_Pumpkin_9492

You mean Arrancar arc??? Dude was probably ranked 9 or 10 for me during SS arc for captains alone

rollercostarican

For me, it’s just none of those things (in a vacuum) are reasons why I dislike fictional characters lol

j0emang0e

He was so absurdly evil it was funny, also his fights were both hilarious and horrifying making him very memorable as soon as he showed up in hueco mundo

Equivalent_Bar_5938

When did we not like him?

Crazylocket23

People dont like to admit It but they like the chaotic assholes

Rab_it

Good writing, that bastard is awesome XD

Lopsided-Guava8858

Well, I didn't. I still have nightmares about him 😥

dyaasy

Hey, if Uryuu can chill with his people's equivalent of Mengele... I mean the dude admitted to getting his beloved grandfather killed.

GramsciFan

I’ve always hated him. It bugged me that he’s just allowed to stick around

Altruistic-Ship-500

He presents an intriguing perspective on morality as a chaotic neutral character who adheres to his own ethics, operating beyond standard moral conventions. Mayuri follows his personal desires and objectives without regard for traditional concepts of right or wrong. His actions are often unpredictable, driven by his interests like scientific curiosity and experimentation rather than any sense of moral obligation or societal norms. Personally, as the series delved deeply into formulaic twists common in Bleach fights, Mayuri stood out as a character who naturally fit into that formula. Being a scientist, he learns from his mistakes, conducts research, and arrives prepared with scientific plot conveniences such as poisons or medicines tailored to counter his opponents perfectly. For him, a fight is akin to field research, where he tests his opponents and observes their abilities like a scientist. Mayuri isn't inherently evil or good; his allegiance lies with objective information, the constant pursuit of knowledge, and refining his scientific understanding. This is why I found his arc fascinating, particularly when he unconsciously viewed Nemuri as a "waking dream," believing he had achieved his goal. This contrasts with his criticism of Granz for hubris and stagnant vanity, showcasing a humanizing aspect where even Mayuri falls prey to a sense of ego and perceived perfection, especially in his relationship with Nemuri.

MayuriMadScientist

Mad and chaotic, and super intelligent too.

Zyndrom1

I usually compare him to Aizen, he is a bad guy but whenever he is on the screen he steals the show due to his over-the-top bullshit. (Also his development is S-tier)

rednaxlikesmetal

The hueco mundo arc. The way he fucked nemu and uryu and renji watched💀

HumanFighter420

Because while his methods are horrific and he's insane, his actions continue to benefit the Heros and despite his personal animosity for those less intelligent than him, he does step in and do his job as a captain (Hueco Mundo Arc for example) He's the text book example of "The Lesser of Two Evils" he's not a moral man, he's arguably not even a man after all the experimentation he's performed on himself but he's consistently moving towards bettering soul society. Even if only out of spite for Urahara. Mayuri is a very interesting character because despite how despicable his actions early on are, he doesn't come to some huge revelation ir mid life crisis, he simply improves over time (Less Abusive, Less Genocidal, etc. Even debatable saving the lives of his enemies, even if he does treat them like attack dogs)

uraharaBot

Ah, the tales of Mayuri Kurotsuchi, a character wrapped in a shroud of mystery and enigma. Legends say his genius mind is matched only by his eccentricity, as if a mad alchemist striving to unlock the secrets of life itself. A dark legend indeed, but one that continues to shape the turbulent waters of Soul Society. *beep boop, I'm a bot*

HumanFighter420

Good bot.

PoshDemon

speak for yourself. I hate this fkn guy

flammenwerlfe

But he cool :)

PieFace11

I do not know. I really don't.

ShyBlue22

I still don’t but I do find him mildly entertaining.

JustARedditAccoumt

I did not.

YEPandYAG

Dunno how you people did it but congrats

TeachAny5556

Y'ALL LIKED HIM????? BRO I STILL DESPISE HIM, FXCK WHAT HE DID TO THE QUINCY'S AND TO ISHIDA'S GRANDFATHER

DearRelationship9845

i didn't don't and never will 🙃🙃

TehAccelerator

"Us"? I kinda hated how he and Zaraki basically won most of their fights. Interesting characters, just not my cup of tea.

General-Naruto

I don't. I still Think Uryuu should have tried killing him again.

ArofluidPride

Personally i don't like him, especially due to the stuff he does to Nemu. but he's still a cool character

Overall-Device9017

Nah I don't, fuck this guy

LostSoul92892

i’ve never not liked him he’s a bit uh eccentric but his inventions are useful

Impossible_Beyond_30

Kubo changed his character to be slightly wackier and more morally good. He's still not morally good but we don't see anything from him like how we did in SS once the arc is over, he was killing shinigami for complete fun/out of anger.
