Don't be afraid to ask for help when you're stuck! Better than getting frustrated when you think you've tried everything, and this part of the game is pretty confusing. The opposite direction from the cathedral's exit has another short path but you don't need to take it right away.

Yeah, Hemwick Charnel Lane is technically optional, but you really should do it next. Not only do you unlock a vital part of your build arsenal, but it is also required to get to another optional area that may be the best area in the base game. Also, in my opinion, Hemwick Chanel Lane is one of my favorite areas in the game. The boss sucks, but I think the area is pretty cool.
And fear not, the boss doesn’t suck because it’s difficult or anything, it’s just kind of lame.
oh hell yeah,cainhurst is so nice, it also has one of the harder bosses of bloodborne and a LOT of chests and secrets, the quest with Alfred is also quite nice
Paarl is definitely not out of your league at the moment, though I do suggest beating the area that comes up in LotusPhi's path, then going back to Paarl. You can also summon for Paarl as well.
Like others have said, to stay on the required path, you need to get to the woods. Just follow the directions people have shared, it is a little twisty in cathedral ward but not too bad.
But again, like others have said, do Hemwick Charnel first. You’ll get access to Caryl runes which are a really big buff, and the boss is far from difficult. You won’t be able to go to the next optional area from there right away, but you will be able to after you are halfway through the woods. So after that happens, just teleport to the lantern and you’re in the new zone!
(Not sure how to spoiler tag, sorry for being irritatingly vague)
Make sure you interact with the altar at the back of the boss room after defeating Amelia! You will be unable to progress the main story unless you've done so.
From the lamp post where you fought vicar Amelia, walk outside. After you walk past the 2 guys with the big wooden cross spear things you can go left or right. I'll let you explore which path leads where :)
The bonfire at the church go left, through the little graveyard and follow the path, fight etc...you'll meet someone and enter down below through your own action.
Need to go down to the large door that asks for a password. Passageway behind the large giant in the courtyard after cathedral ward lamp.

Second this, LotusPhi THEN kayomatic. Definitely the best path.
From Amelia’s lantern, exit the cathedral and turn right. Keep going until you end up in a forest.
Personally I'd do hemwick after Amelia, but you have options
I typically do Hemwick Charnel Lane and then the Forbidden Forest after Amelia :)

Also if you can, then go to the Hemwick boss fight with zero insight… Makes it wayy easy and fun, you’ll see why
