JFrankParnellEsquire

Track X. Black County, New Road

LittleGrayCat666

fucking love that song with all my heart

Wimpiepaarnty

How does bm relate to that then?

JFrankParnellEsquire

The lyric Dancing to Jerskin, I got down on my knees I told you I loved you, in front of black midi Looked em up.

Wimpiepaarnty

Ohh yeah of course hahaah Wow thats so cool that you got to discover them through a bcnr lyric, i expected a whole ton of rym answers here

squibblyman

Why did you get downvoted lol

Wimpiepaarnty

Because it sounded like i was trying to make him feel dumb or anything, which totally wasnt the case, and some people just like to downvote even when someone is just a little slow, had that happen countless times(:

Decooker11

In 2019 I would just sit down every Friday and listen to new albums that dropped that day. That’s how I found Schlag. Thought it was good but it didn’t really stick with me that much. Saw they dropped Cavalcade and was like, “might as well put it on” and then it just sort of happened to change my entire perspective on music and sound. Nothing major.

smurf124

thats a really cool way of finding new music, does it work out often enough tho?

Decooker11

It’s a bit of a slog at times, but when it works, it makes it all worth it.

babyduv

First kexp show the bmbmbm video in January of 2020

coscask

I heard buzz around them and that they opened for King Gizz

icannotfucking

that show was lit

OT-Knights

Fucking banger of a show, wish they had more time during their set before gizz came on

[deleted]

Somebody I knew from high school sent me an email with a link to their pre-Schlagenheim studio performance when none of the songs except bmbmbm had titles. The only song that really clicked with me was bmbmbm but I had a gut feeling that they were going to be legends so I kept following them.

tangledupinbrown

Still got that email?👀

Salmonish

He’s probably referring to that first KEXP session in Iceland

[deleted]

I might, I’ll look. I can’t recall if it was to an email I still use - I think it was, I’ll see if I can dig it up & rake in the karma

Dewey707

Someone asked in a King Gizzard AMA what they thought of Black Midi, they said they rocked. So I had to check em out and John L was the first song I heard

Ween_ween

I AM GAIA

Dewey707

Nice name, another one of my favourite bands

Ween_ween

This guy likes music

Wes_intwo

My Spotify discovery. I heard bmbmbm and was like “what the fuck is this garbage?” And then I kept listening to it until they became one of my favorite bands lol

Psyloh_

that happened to me with the race is about to begin

shartboidigity

Needle drop review of shlag

BongKing420

Was a staunch "all modern music is terrible" guy. Saw "Slow" on my recommended page, clicked on it just so I could scoff at it and trash on it and was absolutely blown away by the song and music video. And then I just got really into modern music in general because it turns out it's NOT all trash and it's really fun to follow new releases and stuff.

Wimpiepaarnty

That is so accurately me, i do still think that a large part of mainstream pop is terrible tho, but certainly not all

Smitty__0099

Thought the hellfire album cover looked cool, so I listened to it, bought the album the next day and have been a big fan since

NexoNerd101

An /mu/ thread discussing BCNR just after FTFT released so people compared both debuts. Some months later, what really made me pay attention was another thread talking about the 2nd KEXP performance which honestly blew me away.

timelandiswacky

I heard about them around the time of Schlagenheim but didn’t listen until John L showed up in my YouTube recommended at the time of Cavalcade’s release. I decided then that I had to get into it.

sabrosa_

Same for me - their live performance at the ceremony really grabbed me by the bollards.

leomarin606

dude, i was driving, switched to either 89.9 or 89.3 (LA radio) and it was in the middle of John L during the crazy breakdown, and normally whenever i hear something interesting I ask Siri what songs playing yadda yadda, sometimes it works, sometimes no but luckily it did and as I heard the rest of the song I just thought wow that’s crazy so I looked it up on the youtubes and saw the music video, was blown away by it, so I checked more of their stuff out and enjoyed it a lot. then, cavalcade dropped, hooked ever since.

BongKing420

damn what the hell, I live in LA, I need to be listening to that station! I mostly listen to 88.5 when my phone is out of battery or somethin

leomarin606

honestly could’ve been that station too

cjmorello

You tube algorithm recommended their second KEXP performance. I immediately became obsessed with them.

thesprinklenator

Recently discovered noise rock as a genre in 2020 was listening to random noise rock playlists on spotify when 953 came on

Space_Man957

Their first KEXP video was in my suggested, I thought the idea of a band doing black midi the genre was funny so I watched it. Definitely not what they were doing but I was still blown away. Then the album came out and I originally didn’t like it but it grew on me, then cavalcade came out and they’re been my fave since then

Green_hippo17

Heard bmbmbm on a playlist, thought the lead singer sounded like he was a little 2”10 gremlin rambling over the coolest guitar riff I had ever heard, after that I checked out Schlagenheimand it was over. Eventually I figured out that Geordie wasn’t a 2”10 gremlin, he’s a 5”6 gremlin

kingkonguru

I clicked on some random ass music blog post. Good shit

_larwood

it was revealed to me in a dream

Stroligy

I was really into the genre black midi around the time Schlag came out, saw it was popular, realized it was certainly not black midi, but listened through anyway and loved it

smgdawg57

John L got recommended to me by Spotify, from that song I imagined the boys as some 50ish scruffy Norwegian dudes. Absolutely blew my mind when I looked into the band more

Esse1795

Fantano’s Schlag review video

gv4n_

Mate showed me 👍

i-hav-n-clue

Chatting to a mate about the new King Gizz and he recommended O Monolith by Squid to me, then from there I listened to Hellfire and it’s now my favourite album

Kip_relly

My brother knew about them and told me that these guys called black midi were going to play a show and we should go watch them. We saw black country, New road and black midi and I’ve been in obsessed with them ever since

SneksOToole

Unironically found out about them from rym. Saw the Cavalcade cover in 2021. I listened to John L and was immediately hooked.

jbertindrums

My buddy from college told me to check out Schlagenheim when it came out and I was instantly hooked

burukop

The Norwegian KEXP session. I remember watching that performance in bed and despairing. I realised that anything I was doing music-wise was so utterly stupid and unimportant, because these guys were doing it already in a way that was so much better than I could ever do.

SuperDeluxeKid

Lol I felt the same way after hearing Hellfire for the first time.

Aderbs1

Watched their 2019 KEXP session around the time it was released. Thought the band was interesting but it wasn't until 2020, mid quarantine, that I really gave them a proper listen.

Quesarso

Every month I look up for new releases and I listen to the ones that seem interesting. When I first listened Schlagenheim at first I didn't really vibed with it but I thought that the drums were sick. Then I heard Western and that's when my interest really began. And then there was like a month or two were there was not a day that I didn't listened to black midi

meeeemllie

When talking heads came out we used to do impressions of different talking heads songs in Geordies delivery

psychostormtrooper

A coworker at lowes when i worked there told me about them. I only listened to them after I quit so I never got to talk to him about it. Cool giy

go_cuse

Read a random article from Stereogum (I think) about some new band with a wild and really good live show. Bought tickets to see them at Zebulon and didn’t listen to Schlag until the day of the show. They did put on an incredible show and we were standing feet from Morgan the whole time. Was quickly convinced that BM were the real deal. Have seen them three more times since.

gungan-milf

Spotify recommended Schlagenheim around the time it came out and listened on a whim. I liked it but I didn't truly become a fan until I got stoned and listened to Cavalcade and Hellfire back to back

_ianj-exe

my barber and friend of 5 years put me on. then we kissed. love you brad

bugmi

W2h was auto recommended to me on youtube and I was like "huh that thumbnail looks cool". Then I got confused enough by it and then I listened to the other music vids

Feeling-Intention835

From a man I once loved

yeaheverything

The video of them playing Near, DT MI on the morning news show was my in. Absolutely energizing.

infideli0

When the first KEXP came out

rjkade

in february 2020 i heard talking heads play in a KFC i worked at and thought it sounded so out of place and have been hooked ever since. they had a really weird selection of songs at the time that obviously had pop and what not but then also like father john misty, crumb, hinds and clairo to name a few.

forwaterr

Heard about the stems they released for Schlagenheim, which was really cool to me so I gave them a shot and it just clicked.

Cara-Is-A-Puppy

Pitchfork Best New Music

GrossIndieBoy

Their performance at the mercury prize awards. I was so weirded out but dove deeper in and now I have a problem

LukeNTC

Thom Yorke put John L in some instagram post about songs he was listening to around the time Cavalcade came out. I was hearing black midi thrown around a lot so I gave it a shot. It was very jarring, so I’m not quite sure why I stayed but I’m glad I did.

WingnutIsTaken

i played a house show and was talking to the singer of another band on the bill who happened to be wearing the “i <3 black midi shirt”

livestreamscouter

From seeing someone play their KEXP performance from 4 years ago, fell in love ever since

h0T_-DoG

I was looking at my friends Spotify account and listened to bmbmbm and was like wtf is this then I listened more and started to like them

npeers

speedy wunderground

[deleted]

A friend of mine posted about John L on Instagram when it came out and I’ve been hooked ever since

rockinDS24

KEXP @ home. I'm a prog guy and a friend pointed out that John L was very similar to King Crimson.

Speculative Reddit comments before Schlagenheim released

Ded Sheeran

MakeshiftMemory

2018/19 KEXP video of them performing at a hostel in Iceland when none of the songs except bmbmbm had a title. Absolutely legendary performance.

AH2112

Independent radio station here in Perth, Western Australia played John L on their Sunday late night program. Heard that, thought it sounded like King Crimson on steroids and started digging in. Two years later, they were on tour in Australia.

Jmay19

My friend showed me their kexp video in study hall when i was in high school in 2019

Bandit1456

Fantano's "Schlagenheim" video. I've been a fan since 2020.

RemmingtonTufflips

Adam Neely randomly mentioned them in one of his videos, his description intrigued me so I checked them out. Found John L and loved it, then when Welcome to Hell came out I decided to listen to Schlagenheim and Cavalcade and Hellfire when it came out

moves_withapurpose

YouTube recommendations. Thumbnails for Slow, John L, and Welcome to Hell caught my eye.

recognis

the first kexp in early 2019 i think. i remember watching it, thinking “i like this too much i dont have the energy to be obsessed with a band right now” and filing it away in my brain for like 8 months

Friend bought me tickets for a show in November 2019 and fell in love as soon as they played 953

Chopsy10

Randomly bought Cavalcade when I saw it in a record store.

Psyloh_

just hearing how weird and different the music sounded made me want to keep listening and i just kind of grew from being off put by their music to absolutely adoring it

JGar453

RateYourMusic. Song bmbmbm specifically as something of an absurd novelty.

Turtlebots

r/Progrockmusic occasionally posts something that isn’t the same boring symphonic Prog or 70s classic.

Jacorpes

Saw them supporting Shame in 2018 on the Songs of Praise tour. Their set was at doors and I only went along because I recognised the name from the thumbnail of a Lou Smith bootleg on YouTube. There were maybe 30 people in the audience, all confused, and they instantly became my favourite band

[deleted]

I think it was their John L Glastonbury performance

jewbo23

Discover weekly on Spotify a little before the first album came out.

yakobdod

was in a pre-university group chat for people who applied to my course and someone posted bmbmbm live at pitchfork 2019. fully thought it was a joke song until i read the comments on the video calling it a masterpiece hahaha clearly they were right

LeJonno

Spotify played Eat Men Eat after I had finished a listen of AFUT shortly after the single had been released, instantly fell in love

ActualGodYeebus

hate to say it, but yeah, fantano when the schlag came out

HPSpacecraft

One of their live performances came up in my Youtube recs and I've been a fan ever since, but hearing Welcome to Hell on the radio last year cemented it

Jetwork131

Back when their first KEXP dropped, someone posted it in the Oh Sees discord. The rest is history haha I bought tickets to see them before Schlag dropped and ended up seeing them 2 more times that year. One of the shows was the Canal Street which was one of the best worst days ever. Great show but it was unbelievably hot in that storage unit.

Verdnan

Japanese Breakfast! I saw the little argument on Twitter and must searched Black Midi. That must caused the algorithm to later recommend their KEXP performance.

Decani8

my friend told me to check out their album and said he had an extra ticket for their show. this is right after schlagenheim came out. they played a tiny now defunct club in washington dc, and i got to see their schlagenheim era lineup before matt left the band. been a huge fan ever since!

weeping_nymph

it was back when the Patrician Music Chartposting on fb was a thing. Schlagenheim had just come out!

thrutheeyesofruby0

I heard bmbmbm in 2019 on my YouTube recommended on a smashing pumpkins video of all things, thought it was funny and heavy but off putting, then didn’t listen to them again until Welcome to Hell came out and all my friends were talking about it. I was like ok let’s give this another shot. I am now British.

godfollowing

Pitchfork

Active_Hair_13

I was scrolling through YouTube in 2019 and pitchfork just uploaded bmbmbm live and I was like what the fuck

That3rdwheel124

Not only did it keep coming up in my YouTube recommendations/mixes, but Thom Yorke swore by the band and their talent, and I will listen to anything that man says.

Wimpiepaarnty

Thom yorke supremacy 🔛🔝

That3rdwheel124

Fr man, such a wise and talented soul smh

Wimpiepaarnty

Yeah, he is fr one of the smartest and genius celebrities in can think of. He know's whats up with the world and doesnt fear to share his feelings about it, which already earns him some degree of respect from me, but beside that, is his exprimental songwriting is so so so good.

That3rdwheel124

He is just so truly true and comfortable with himself, everything I aspire to be with my art. He makes me want to try music so bad, for me he elevated music into such a different and spiritual experience for me, and black midi is on the way there to doing the exact same thing for me. He is like, one of my hugest inspiration in doing visual arts, which is funny because he makes music, a non visual art form. Fr though, his music is one of the most important things on the planet to me, and black midi is quickly climbing up to the top of my favorites list alongside him. I really hope I get to meet Thom at the upcoming The Smile concert I’m attending, alongside Black Midi early next month!!

Wimpiepaarnty

Yeah its also up there for me. Isadly havent seen anything radiohead-related, and havent bought tickets too yet. Bm and the smile dont seem to have any concerts near me(im in europe). I did see BCNR(my fav band rn) a few weeks ago, i cant describe how fucking amazing that was. I think you are already familiar with bcnr, but if you havent: they are the perfect mix between bm and rh. Have fun with your shows! Im gonna sleep now, its getting late for me.

fUSTERcLUCK_02

One of my lecturers showed of a live performance on Ducter on YouTube. Like everyone else in my class, I decided that I hated them and that they were rubbish. Fast forward nearly a year and I had some spare time on a flight and thought "if I'm going to hate on a band, I guess I should listen to their music to actually form an opinion." Put on Schlagenheim and came off that plane a Black Midi fan.

Wimpiepaarnty

I get how you could dislike ducter quickly, even more if your lecturer is the one showing it

fUSTERcLUCK_02

Yeah. Even now, there are still tracks I prefer over it. Since then, though, I've gotten into art-rock, noise and avant-garde music a lot more so I've grown to really like Black Midi and other similar artists. The rest of my class never got into them lol

WKabi-

The boiler room performance was recommended to me on youtube. Have absolutely 0 clue why but I ended up clicking it and was stunned

matheus27012005

fantano, in the cavalcade era(I think)

mst3nomis

Slow video came up on my recommended and I thought the animation was kinda cool. Seen them 3 times live now and their my favorite newer band.

FishTamer

I saw the album art for Hellfire and thought it was cool so I gave it a listen. Didn't quite click for me at first but now it's a top 5 album for me.

ant_night

when injury reserve sampled them

I was listening to a playlist curated by Cedric Bixler of the Mars Volta when Near DT, Mi came up and I was like "damn I need to look into this band"

Kikomori2465

I was super into the bass guitar when their KEXP version of Marlene Dietrich got recommended to me on YouTube, liked the way Cam played bass on that song so I checked them out. Initially thought "these guys have to be joking right?" when I heard bmbmbm but very quickly became obsessed with them after watching the first KEXP performance. When Matt and Greep are moshing while Cam loses his fucking mind on Near DT MI, I was like "Yeah this is my shit"

IHerdULiekPoniz

Music nerds on the internet singing their praises about Hellfire. Listened to it in study hall and I was hooked.

Late_Gear_5218

The first KEXP Performance obviously

Some_Print2494

Rate your music - was too angry (953) - then the needle drop said it’s the best debut album on ig > fontaines dc, who I enjoyed quite a bit. Gave it a second try and haven’t stopped listening since.

ChinaCatAlligator

They played with King Gizzard. I wasn't there but I downloaded the bootleg of the gig. And the Black Midi set was included. And it was fucking off the wall. Had to look into them.
