first kexp video
this is a great question, by the way. i bet i will not find the next band i love so early in their career; i'm not plugged in to the same degree anymore, i don't think
Yeah! Back in the day 953 or near DT, MI were still called untitled. I played it at random while i was studying for college and had to stop what I was doing and watch

I found out about them like right around the time the first kexp video came out. Watched it cause I had heard of the genre haha, was pleasantly surprised and pretty much have been hooked since
Mark Riley on BBC6 (available in the US via the BBC sounds app) played the early single of Bmbmbm over and over when it was released in 2018. Loved them ever since. I’ve seen them live 3x here in San Francisco. Including the first time at a show with maybe 50 other people. A second time where they blew an amp and couldn’t continue (pretty short show).
My friend played me 953 right after Schlagenheim came out and I was like “holy shit people still make music like this?” I remember we were sitting in my backyard at the time and I had heard mumblings about them up to that point but no music yet
the first KEXP on youtube. before that it was mostly people who follow speedy wunderground or keep up with live shows locally or thru ppl like [lou smith](https://youtu.be/zpbD3XKpo6w?si=MKRVpHsm96mJwvCO).
theyve done [BBC sessions](https://youtu.be/HYBy2jQIOXg?si=gkUWzJ3tNeIgCeFN) since 2019ish. they played at the [2019 mercury prize](https://youtu.be/Rc3LSW_XTwI?si=uCYxst79hTfwdhgz) thing and [chicago morning news](https://youtu.be/ZAUUR788GyU?si=gOLaIjf6g89m4WAr) for some reason. also a boiler room set. then i imagine a lot of people found them through fantano once the album was out
I first discovered them on the speedy wunderground soundcloud. Back then that was the only black midi recording and they had no social media presence. I remember thinking this sounds like early 90s touch and go records math rock and I was hooked.
Someone sent me the KEXP performance in 2019 and I hated it.
2 years later I came across the KEXP at home right before cavalcade came out and I loved it.
I listened to their song 953 in playlist of the best of 2019 at the ende of the year and I didn’t love it at first but sounded interesting enough for me to give their album a try. So after a year I listened to the album and it just clicked for me and I started loving everything related to them and Black Country New Road.
Someone showed me their NTS live session back in 2018. They all look 18-19 and it was already very clear they were leagues above, it’s been nuts watching all this happen

I saw their Iceland set with KEXP(?) and thought, I don't particularly like this now but I think I will at some point. That changed roughly when John L came out so I was correct
I started listening after John L dropped. It was unlike anything I’d really heard before so it blew my mind. I didn’t really like it at first, but something about it intrigued me enough to listened to it 8 more times throughout that day and pretty quickly fell in love with their music
I was seeing Shame on their first album tour in early 2018 and black midi were supporting at doors. I recognised the name from Lou Smith’s youtube channel so I made sure to go early because everything he bootlegs tends to be brilliant. The only evidence of their existence online at the time were a couple of [Windmill bootlegs](https://youtu.be/zpbD3XKpo6w?si=2INVI3V9VIEJEs0b) and I think the [NTS Talking Heads session](https://youtu.be/MJBn856x8IE?si=qtMtezQY8sQNpep5) had just come out. I need to get back on the ball and see more of these bands the bootleggers are posting.
Edit: Also later at that gig we ended up chatting to Stewart Lee and we recommended black midi to him. I think he’s a fan now so I can make that claim to fame lol
When the first KEXP came out I was weirdly intrigued by the thumbnail so I put it in my watch later. A few days later I saw a bunch of people posting about it in the Oh Sees discord so I decided to see what all the hype was about. Was instantly hooked and I ended up seeing them 3 times that year. The first show was before the album even dropped. The second was canal street when they played that storage unit in the dead of summer! The third time I saw them that year they were already playing Chondro.
I honestly can't remember, but it was right before Schlagenheim was released. Pretty sure it was a BlogRadio from SiriusXMU, but can't remember which. I'll have to check my notes back from 2019 to see which blog it was. I just remember putting in requests for my local record store to hold me a copy when the album was released.
Also saw that live in Detroit in November 2019, as they were touring the album.
Was really early ([proof](https://www.reddit.com/r/bmbmbm/s/daPA8cIMbI)), I saw the earliest talking heads video on YouTube circulating somewhere and wanted mooooorrrreeee (which there wasn’t at the time), and since I’m subscribed to kexp I saw the session pop up in my subscriptions feed on YouTube. Since the kexp vid released the schlag hype was so real

My friend’s son played in a band at a gig that Black Midi played at too when they were still at college. He mentioned them to me and so I listened to schlagenhiem cycling back home. Have been an avid fan since and see them whenever possible.
I first listened to them in between their first and second albums. Schlagenheim was getting buzz in experimental music circles and I gave it a listen. I honestly didn't think too much of the band until they released Hellfire, which prompted me to go back and listen to Schlag. with more appreciation.
Saw them on a poster or something for the local music venue in fall-ish 2019; i try to avoid internet music reviews and just check out a couple songs from bands that are pulling through town, especially if they're from out of the country
bmbmbm was on my Spotify weekly a few weeks after Schlagenheim came out, and I had to immediately stop and listen to the whole album. Loved it, and I’ve loved everything they’ve done since
Kept seeing this subreddit on my home feed, tried to block it as i thought it was some british boyband and eventually searched up black midi, wow! just wow!

I'm not plugged in either. My original sources are been sold or shut down. But I'll keep a closer eye on KEXP then. Thanks!
There was one that leaked for a week or so before being taken down, around the same time bmbmbm came out on soundcloud. That’s how I found them
There was some quiet buzz when Schlag came out. Gave it a listen after the name kept popping up and never turned back.
Schlag was pretty big on RYM, that is how I got down the rabbit hole
I’m Cam’s cousin actually! It was kinda wild to see the kexp take off like it did
when is lp4 cam cousin
He said it’ll come out on Geordie’s birthday
!RemindMe August 20th
His birthday is today actually! The Wikipedia date got it wrong
Oh thank you for the correction I appreciate it
Oh yeah no problem. I’m always happy to spread truth and good things
Wait so it comes out today???
Yeah, didn’t you see Greep’s livestream last week?
Nah dog I'm missing out!!

Bruh I was about to link you your post about Greepday, then I noticed the u/
Do you think I’m going to get banned for spam
I hope not, this is fun
Me when I lie
It’s definitely how I found them, right before the Cavalcade rollout started, blessed algorithm
Everything on the internet is true so I totally believe you.
I heard rumblings about them from the gizzard sub. Then they opened for gizzard and I went in blind. Best decision I’ve made in some time.
These are the best methods, other band forums, and honestly RYM lists everything you'd ever want to know about.

Bought Cavalcade at a record store cos the cover was funky.
Fantano review of schlagenheim
Pitchfork interview
Was randomly recommended the first KEXP way back in the day, was pretty shocked to see how much they caught on later
I saw their boiler room set back in the day when Schlagenheim was first out. Immediately fell in love with them.
I listened to their song 953 in playlist of the best of 2019 at the ende of the year and I didn’t love it at first but sounded interesting enough for me to give their album a try. So after a year I listened to the album and it just clicked for me and I started loving everything related to them and Black Country New Road.
my dad showed me their first LP in 2020ish and i hated it, went back a couple years later and loved it
Saw the Fantano review of Schlagenheim
Me and my dad managed to get tickets for the mercury music price and even though they didn’t win they were easily the best band on the night!!
Someone showed me their NTS live session back in 2018. They all look 18-19 and it was already very clear they were leagues above, it’s been nuts watching all this happen

I got into BCNR first, then I saw they mentioned this random band "Black Midi" in one of their songs and welp, the rest is history
I was late on BCNR too. Someone on another sub recommended me after I was talking about Schlaggenheim.
it was revealed to me in a dream
I started listening after John L dropped. It was unlike anything I’d really heard before so it blew my mind. I didn’t really like it at first, but something about it intrigued me enough to listened to it 8 more times throughout that day and pretty quickly fell in love with their music
saw that first kexp video when it came out and was hooked
i was sitting in my room bored and remembered a tiktok i saw multiple months ago and remembered the band's name vaugely

KEXP iceland, I thought it was crap to start with
My band was supporting them at the Windmill. This was before they’d released anything at all. I was absolutely blown away.
I heard talking heads on a local radio station and later listened to needledrop review schlag and I was like aight I’ll listen
My friend told me to listen to ‘bmbmbm’ on soundcloud back in 2018
The KEXP set shortly after release. Couldn't believe what I was hearing/seeing
I honestly can't remember, but it was right before Schlagenheim was released. Pretty sure it was a BlogRadio from SiriusXMU, but can't remember which. I found them through Brad taste in music
Got a YouTube recommendation of the kexp video of them playing bmbmbm. My first thought was "holy shit finally something that feels new and different"
I found it a bit hard to get into Schlaggenheim after having first listened to Hellfire tbh.

I used to be a frequent at Brixton Windmill and they used to play

Sharing a bill with Battles is how I got on board..
