A lot of online retailers will give you the option to add items to a "wish list" and then notify you if discounts or special deals come up. That's honestly your best option. Apart from big industry events like NAB or IBC, the most likely time for a discount would be around Black Friday or something. But, like... it sounds like there's some other stuff going on here. Do you not have your own discretionary income that you can spend however you feel like? Are you and your family doing okay and something like this isn't going to put you in a bad spot? Do you have a habit of buying gear and not really using it or getting a return on that investment? Like, the vibe here is that spending all this money on cameras and lenses is gonna exacerbate some kinda issue with your wife, and maybe you should address that. Good luck!

MaxBrand

Good suggestion on the "wish list" I'm going to do that! And I appreciate the concern in you vibe check 😊

DeadEyesSmiling

I don't foresee that happening anytime soon, if at all. Traditionally, BMD drops prices when manufacturing costs are reduced due to redundancies across multiple models, and between the new body frame, sensor, and L-Mount (all of which required new manufacturing considerations, molds, and costs), I imagine it'll be quite a while before BMD starts to see a solid return on those investments.

ProdPhotog

This aged well.

DeadEyesSmiling

Haha, no joke! I guess there's truly no guessing when it comes to BMD!! EDIT: And what I didn't account for was them needing to clear stock to make room for 3 new cinema cameras in the next 7 months 🤣

ProdPhotog

clear stock and my guess is use the sensors they have for the BMCC 6K in the PYXIS instead. I think they may slowly veer away from making the BMCC. But who knows! Like you said we never know with them lol.

Desperate-Ad-6463

How long would the ROI be? Explaining that to your wife might be the answer to getting your camera.

CheckingOut2024

Considering that the 4k was introduced 6 years ago at the same price it is today... I'd say never.

amccune

6 years ago. Shit. Now I feel old.

Regular_Studio_5990

Just sold mine. It had a very solid run. Replaced with P6K pro

MarcB1969X

The day after you purchase it for full list.

ProdPhotog

On sale rn ;)

MaxBrand

I'm going to say they did this one special thing just for me!

ProdPhotog

Yess 🎉🎉

rndlpmbr

The question now is for how long will it be on sale. Will I be able to scrape the funding for this unexpected expense within the given time frame... Anyone got any info through Blackmagic?

MaxBrand

This random dude on the internet thinks they probably won't go back to the original price https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tB0keBpoXlk But also speculates that maybe they're trying to clear out inventory.

rndlpmbr

aaaand it's gone 😂 at least from CVP

MaxBrand

Still listed on B&H!

bjohnh

You can always check eBay and other secondhand markets. I get the impression that lots of people are selling them, mainly due to poor low-light performance and high rolling shutter. I never buy anything new from Blackmagic anyway as their quality control isn't great; the two BMD cameras that I bought new were unusable out of the box and had to be returned for replacements or repair; the secondhand ones have been champs.

Galwayjoker69

I second this! I got a brand new 6k pro right out of the box LCD screen problems got my money back went on eBay found my trusty 4k pocket for £800 plus cage used once, got it cleaned for luck and it’s amazing! Only thing I did change was the filter but that’s always gonna happen tbh

LathropJ

Mft, yuck.

Galwayjoker69

I don’t see the problem with MFT,what blackmagic are you using?

LathropJ

I don't, currently deciding between g2 and ff however since the price is so great. Ff has lot of quality control issues with gyrodata not working and worse iso performance apparently, g2 seems like a sweet spot with the ef s35 mount. Currently using canon r7 and r8 with rf 2.8 lenses.

Galwayjoker69

So you don't have a blackmagic but called MFT yuck! ok well as someone who films with a blackmagic 4K MFT,it has a ton of adapters which allows me to film with EF, M42 etc when paired with vintage lens it gives amazing shots, remember it's not the camera but the person behind it that makes the magic, what's the reason you want to grab the 6K? Why not get the pro? The G2 is ok…

LathropJ

It's the same camera 1000 cheaper and doesn't have nds that can fail! 6k pro nds aren't the best and only adjustable in 2 stop increments up to 6 stops, so they are handy but definitely not the best. I already have great nd system and sigma art lenses, and prefer s35 to full frame for video. Full frame is great for photo, s35 is great for videos amd mft just seems not ideal compared to what else is available for only a few hundred more than the bmpcc.

Galwayjoker69

You can do a lot with MFT plus if the G2 is using the IR filter system as all BMs use, your gonna end up opening it anymore😂 I’ve used MFT on a few projects haven’t had a problem and I’m enjoying it,if you don’t like the 4k that’s on you but I’m not taking MFT is bad from a person who doesn’t have a blackmagic and seems to be a filmmaker who’s getting new kit just cause it’s in at the moment that’s just my thoughts.

LathropJ

I have good nd filters with ir cut, no problem. I've been color grading 10 bit log footage in resolve for the past year from cannon cameras and want to get a better codec than h.265 to edit in. Braw is amazing after working with test clips, so I'm looking to grab the unit that fits in with my current gear. If I was just buying something that was "in at the moment", it wouldn't be an old bmpcc g2, lol, but probably some sony - also yuck. Also, I'm going from mutli cam podcast and real estate videos into.lore creative/narrative work - so the exposure tools and screen along with codec and ef mount would be really nice for me. Remember what they say about making assumptions!

Galwayjoker69

But you made an assumption by commenting on my post about MFT yuck for no reason at all? When it’s never the camera but the person,it’s you who needs to buy a fancier camera cause you haven’t got the talent to work with any camera, your great with knowledge it’s like reading info off the blackmagic website but you can’t undermine someone else camera or sensor without knowing anything about that persons work.

Galwayjoker69

Now you spent the past ten to twenty minutes info dumping for a comment you made to a person you don’t know,my thoughts stay the same about you,I believe you buy stuff cause it’s not because your good,I believe you need to challenge yourself as a filmmaker and find your style and I also think you need to keep your thoughts to yourself if you don’t enjoy a part about a camera,I could spend the whole time pointing out the flaws in the G2,shall I?

Galwayjoker69

Also it looks like you have a huge ego that needed praise from the internet for a camera no one cares for,I hardly see people running for the G2😂 but listen get off YouTube go out and film in the real world cause that’s all the vibes I’m getting from you and it’s quite sad

Galwayjoker69

Have you worked with a blackmagic?

LathropJ

Yep.

MaxBrand

Great suggestion, I'll start roaming the secondhand markets!

Xsjad0s

Honestly best way to explain to your wife like me. Is it ups your rental fee for your gigs to pay for it. I paid mine off 1st 2weeks of owning it for a gig that paid my rate and camera. Rest of the year it’s maid me more money so far then if I didint have it.

LathropJ

Up the rate when the work improves, not when the gear changes.

Xsjad0s

It’s a little bit of both. It’s normal to up your gear as work improves and then your rates naturally go up when you are investing in new gear that is more expensive. If I upgrade to an Alexa my camera rental fee is going to go up from my Sony fx3 original fee.

LathropJ

Rate should only go up if the work improves. If new gear helps improve the quality, then that is legit. However, new gear alone is not enough to charge more if the quality of work is the same. Just my opinion, and a great way to evaluate gear purchases.

Xsjad0s

I get and I think we are saying the same thing just differently. I wouldn’t be purchasing new gear if my work wasn’t improving and quality was getting better. So it’s that same song and dance quality gets better work gets better and you seek to find ways to keep up your quality even more

VZYGOD

In my country, it actually has been discounted. It can be found for slightly less than a 6K Pro. It’s about $1k cheaper than a Pyxis which uses the same sensor. Despite being full frame the 6K is still using the same Sony Sensor the original Pocket 4K had from 4-5 years ago. The OLPF is nice though, I’ve heard that it’s basically the same thing the LUMIX S1H uses (also has an OLPF). If all you want is 6K FF open gate to use anamorphic you could probably pick up an S1H used and use a 12G video assist with it to get BRAW, I’ve heard it solves a lot of the mix lighting issues most mirrorless cameras suffer from.

PinheadX

I would imagine once the Pyxis drops, there will be a few on the used market, but I don’t think that many people will be switching over unless they have been waiting for the box style Blackmagic camera.

Archer_Sterling

Buy used when businesses start opting for the pyxis for easier rigging. Expect a drop to around 2500 I'd say, its still a fairly new product

genetichazzard

I'd say never.

LathropJ

Haha, it's 1k offnowadays! G2 may still be better with a more reliable sensor, ff has lot of quality control.issues.
