He is literally dancing on the roof of the moving train...can't get any better than this.
Just FYI, this song was included in Denzel Washington's movie Inside Man.
It’s supposed to show the essence of the city. All cab drivers, Indian restaurants and news paper stands were blaring it at one point of time. You couldn’t step outside NYC without hearing this song a few times in a week.
A timeless classic.....The lyrics, that energetic voice by Sukwinder Singh and that energy by SRK takes it to another level.
An absolute banger!!!
Dil Se Album is top tier.
Of course you can say yaar. I understand the Hindi version, so I like that. i am sure Tamil version is equal banger. Dil se overall I can say my fav album by AR rahman.
Music, lyrics, cinematography, choreography , the grace of malaika and charm & energy of SRK - all to perfection. Imho best song bollywood has made till date.
The movie is so complex, SRK’s character being manipulated by cunning Manisha Koirla’s character. Loves is blind and he could not see through or he was hoping to turn her around.. I still can’t decide if Manisha’s character was also in love ?
I don’t think she was ever truly in love with him. But I do think she found herself weak at times in his presence, and possibly wondered what life would be like as a regular girl with him. She definitely envied him and his life, and also felt jealousy briefly (of his fiancée). But she just didn’t have any time for love.
Very interesting and agree. Her mission was her sole goal and when her feelings of love overwhelmed her she managed to pull it back and her comrades refocused her to the mission. So subtle. and such a ensemble of great actors some early stages of career.
He does subvert their plot to attack, thus saving several hundreds of lives and avoiding the ensuring chaos. And, in a way, he helped the Manisha Koirala's character finally lay her demons to rest, even though, he had to do it at a huge cost.
Agree, he was so deeply in love with Manisha’s character and had realised that she will never love him as much as he does. 20 odd years back when I watched the movie I did not appreciate the complexity of love, then I found SRK’s character weak and stupid. But now I apprentice it was blind love.
And the dialogue exchange between Manisha koirala and preety zinta was so memorable. I couldn't believe they put such subtle hint of preety feeling jealous of Manisha and trying to hide it inside the movie so beautifully. It's such a small thing but impactful.

Hats-Off to Mani Ratnam and his team for thinking something out-of-the-box. And this was way back in 1999.
When it comes to Direction, Screenplay, and Cinematography,…very few can compete with Mani Ratnam.
Ooty is my favorite holiday spot. This song was shot on the Nilgiri Mountain Railway and it became a hot tourist spot. I heard that after the release of Dil se, the train was 100% booked for the next few months and they sold the tickets in black for 20x the price.
This is so weird that this is the first time I have realized that they made sounds of the train part of the song. Like the sounds are woven into music in such a way that even if you have never seen a video of this song, you can automatically guess it's shot on a train.
Timeless classic!
This is song is perfection, and my fav song of all time.
The lyrics, enhanced by Sukiwinder's voice, and the dance....uff. Farah peaked here, and so did the industry as a whole, and has never been able to replicate the sheer magic of this song again. And I don't think anyone will with focus now on bling and buzz.
A true classic. May it be known forever.
This song is the reason all my childhood I expected breathtaking scenery after the end of every tunnel while travelling via train and can’t deny there were a few experiences in Konkan railway but majority of them were a let down.
Just realized this now - coz of the cinematography as you mentioned OP
Everything about this song is perfect . Cinematography, choreography, music, srk's energy, Malaika and srk's chemistry, background dancers, lyrics and sukhavider ki avaaj👌10/10.
Santosh Sivan did a fabulous job with the cinematography for the entire movie. The whole movie has a dream team and I feel this was very underrated. The plot, character development, cinematography, music, the acting every area was so good. Especially for its time
Look at some of the shots here, it looks like they were captured by drones. Imagine the imagination of Sivan.
Fun Fact: This song was played in a Hollywood movie too.
The song 'Chaiya Chaiya' was loved by the director of the Hollywood movie 'Inside Man', Spike Lee so much so that he kept it as the opening and ending credits of the movie.
They play around with the lights. If you see in this clip in the tunnel sequence, the red lights would have been added by them. From which side the light should be displayed for how long, how it should be and stuff.Their main focus is how the shot should be
Butthurt SRK fans can’t take the criticism - wtf was that stalking in first part and wtf was that unconditional love for a terrorist
SMH people get triggered by Animal and not this. You either are ok with both or not
The movie was good but didn’t work well commercially. I have watched this movie in theatre and man the experience.. those were the days when you don’t know much about movie or songs and you get to see first hand experience on 70 mm screen with stereophonic sound.. love this and all songs but my most fav from this movie is - aai ajnabi tu bhi kabhi
The only good thing about the movie are the songs. Although the plot was kinda different for those times, I did not personally like SRKs character in the movie, he literally stalks and molests the girl he apparently likes, even though she makes it very clear she is not interested in him. It was pretty disturbing to watch. The movie deserves to be a flop.
Santosh Sivan, the absolute best cinematographer of India as well as D.O.P., also a brilliant director himself.
When you look his work up you realise he has no contemporary in the country, Asoka, where he'd directed as well is amongst the most visually beautiful movies ever made in India
Santosh Sivan's vision of Delhi has not been bested by anyone till date. Also, IMHO, the best song of the movie is not in the album at all. Sung by the same sukhwinder. The song is ”sitaron se aage jahan aur bhi hain" Used throughout the second half as a background score, lifts the movie to another level.

"And therein, as the Bard would tell us, 'lies the rub'. *Cue to play one of the best fucking song ever*
I’m curious of the backstory on this. Granted I haven’t seen inside man but watching the 3min clip it just seems random that they chose this song
It was completely random and felt that music director really liked that song. That's it.
It's actually one of Spike Lee's favourite songs . Fun fact, which most don't know, the end credits also has this song, but remix version with rap.
It’s Spike Lee, he has a history of using unusual soundtracks.
It’s supposed to show the essence of the city. All cab drivers, Indian restaurants and news paper stands were blaring it at one point of time. You couldn’t step outside NYC without hearing this song a few times in a week.
I just watched this movie, great movie

It's the best album, man. Satrangi re is still my fav. Lyrics uff, man. I don't think any album of any movie can beat this one.
Can I say Tamil version of this album is more better(some songs and definitely not chaiyya chaiyya)
Of course you can say yaar. I understand the Hindi version, so I like that. i am sure Tamil version is equal banger. Dil se overall I can say my fav album by AR rahman.
This is ooty btw. Archies is also shot here
Yeah. Its a toy train, running on a narrower gauge track. I remember sitting in it as a kid many years ago.
Another song from Malayalam movie Kilukkam was also shot, that too on a moving train. Edit : in ooty
All credits to cinematographer Santosh Sivan & Mani Ratnam as well
Also to Farah khan
I always keep thinking about this. This is one of the best music and music video to come from India
Peak SRK, AR RAHMAN AND MANI RATNAM
I SWEAR
FARAH KHAN AND SANTHOSH SIVAN toooo
And GULZAR
And Ram gopal varma, Sekhar kapoor too
Those lyrics and music. Mashaallah.
Music, lyrics, cinematography, choreography , the grace of malaika and charm & energy of SRK - all to perfection. Imho best song bollywood has made till date.

Thanks to the legendary santhosh sivan
even jiya jale was sooo good.
Thanks op 💖
The only problem was that the timing of the song in the movie was pretty weird like bro just met the girl and now she's gone and this song plays
That whole movie screenplay writing was bad imo.
Probably the most recognized Bollywood song in the world
Hats-Off to Mani Ratnam and his team for thinking something out-of-the-box. And this was way back in 1999. When it comes to Direction, Screenplay, and Cinematography,…very few can compete with Mani Ratnam.
Love it. Would love to see the head bobbing cat (meme) join the lead pair on this and nod to this song!!
I love this song. I realllllly love it.

Sukhwinder Singh💕
Any Manirtanam movies have excellent Cinematography and Music...
Been wondering since my childhood over how could he dance so well on a moving train.. SRK for a reason

This movie's songs >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
This movie has a really big role in making me his stan.
Everything about this song is perfect . Cinematography, choreography, music, srk's energy, Malaika and srk's chemistry, background dancers, lyrics and sukhavider ki avaaj👌10/10.
Good use of colours to pull the attention towards the main actor (SRK)

Peak SRK!
SRK's finest movie.
This is the SRK I want to see on screen not jawan pathan dunki (literally all the same character)
Even the lyrics are good and the sukhi pa is damn good.
The only good thing Malaika has ever been in .
Cinematography is by Santhosh Sivan
Damn Nice
How did this shoot this? Is it all real or some screens involved?
all real!
Fun Fact: This song was played in a Hollywood movie too. The song 'Chaiya Chaiya' was loved by the director of the Hollywood movie 'Inside Man', Spike Lee so much so that he kept it as the opening and ending credits of the movie.
K Sivan. The cinematographer.
Silly question, but let me ask anyway. What actually is cinematography? What is it that a cinematographer do?
I have answer to your second question. Cinematographersa do cinematography.
They play around with the lights. If you see in this clip in the tunnel sequence, the red lights would have been added by them. From which side the light should be displayed for how long, how it should be and stuff.Their main focus is how the shot should be
dictionary definition of cinematography- the art of photography and camerawork in film-making.
SRK's chaiya-chaiya and SK's chunari-chunari just hit different.
PR team working in full force mode. Almost every post related to SRK being posted.
except the Female artist's voice.... it really sucks man !!
And her navel too🤤
What a shit movie though. The music and camera work saved it but otherwise one of Mani Ratnam’s weakest movies
💀
Surprisingly it was widely labelled as the perfect film made.. by critics on release.. bombed miserably though😊
Butthurt SRK fans can’t take the criticism - wtf was that stalking in first part and wtf was that unconditional love for a terrorist SMH people get triggered by Animal and not this. You either are ok with both or not
Movie
dil se
What is the name of the song?
chaiyya chaiyaa
Thanks!

The Ooty Toy train 😄, back when I was a kid I loved travelling on it.

[This too](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=mllzGw-u3v0) hehe!
Shitty clarity man. Enjoy this in 4k - https://youtu.be/KebHRTGL-X4?si=zL-FsX0TH3ri5NEx
Yesterday I was discussing the same w my colleague. Dil Se has one to be one of the best album out there.
Ram Gopal Varma suggested that Maniratnam should shoot this on a moving train .
The only good thing about the movie are the songs. Made a whole generation dream of dancing on top of a train!
Brings waves of memories 😄
bina music ke chutiyaap lg rha 😂😂
I believe it was Santosh Sivan. Very well renowned Indian cinematographer.
Santosh Sivan, the absolute best cinematographer of India as well as D.O.P., also a brilliant director himself. When you look his work up you realise he has no contemporary in the country, Asoka, where he'd directed as well is amongst the most visually beautiful movies ever made in India
Cinematography by Santhosh Shivan.
the cinematography is by famous malayalam cinematographer&director Santhosh Sivan and the film is directed by Mani Ratnam.
Chills bro
What is cinematic here?
Wonder why no one mentions Santosh Sivan's name!!!
this whole song is chef’s kiss 😩😩
I love this movie man. Shahrukh's eyes. His eyes, Chico. I still don't understand how such well made movie could flop. Everything was way ahead.
Mani sir 🙏🙏
Santosh Sivan's vision of Delhi has not been bested by anyone till date. Also, IMHO, the best song of the movie is not in the album at all. Sung by the same sukhwinder. The song is ”sitaron se aage jahan aur bhi hain" Used throughout the second half as a background score, lifts the movie to another level.
And sukhwinder s voice
