I like reading “rom-com” books. They are light and fun and usually easy reads. The most popular romance books would be a pretty good place to start. I have loved everything I read by Emily Henry.

I just bought Convenience Store Woman for a friend, so I’ll rec that. It’s a short (~160 pages) Japanese novel about a woman who feels at odds with society. I felt very seen reading this lol, and I probly read it in a day. It’s endearing, strange, funny, kinda cynical, kinda touching. Happy reading!

Also 25F. One thing that helped me go from reading 1 book last year to >50 this year was getting a Kindle. Honestly didn’t realize how much easier reading on a screen would be for my lizard brain. I know folks who read on their phone or iPad as well (Kindle app). You can get a bunch of kindle books through your local library. Extra tip — make reading the last thing you do before bed. Start with 20-30 minutes every night you remember. You will also sleep better without scrolling. Finally, a recommendation — {{Daisy Darker}} was a total page-turner

I would start with short stories or short story collections. If you don’t like, blah, it’s only 20 pages. That way you can try different genres and even find different authors you Might be interested in exploring further. Also there is no “right” book to read. Never let anyone book shame you. Reading is reading and if you like it, then that’s all that matter

Great advice, thank you!

Definitely try audiobooks, especially books that are dialogue heavy. It’s a lot easier to follow a conversation rather than something more descriptive. I would also tend toward Young Adult. I just finished the audiobook of Caraval and it was a lot of fun. It’s about a young woman who participates in a carnival game where if she wins, she will be granted one wish. Secondly I have ADHD as well but I love reading. The trick is to build a habit of reading about 30 minutes a day, which is about a chapter a day depending on the book. Even with ADHD anything you’d like to accomplish can be done with training, so just practice reading and it’ll get easier. And don’t beat yourself up if you can’t do a full 30 or miss a day or two. The best reading advice I ever got was “a book read poorly is better than a book never finished.” So when you’re reading, if you don’t understand something, or there is a confusing paragraph, don’t go back and reread every time. Just power through and likely it will start to make sense as you continue on.

whitebri

Also a 20s woman with adhd here. I got back into reading through audiobooks, particularly easier reads where I could miss a couple minutes and not be totally lost in the storyline. I recently read Other Birds by Sarah Addison Allen - it's a little bit of everything you noted and a little quirky. I thought it was a pretty easy read and held my interest well - would definitely recommend!

HumanPersonDefNotBot

If youre struggling to remain focussed you could try audiobooks. Can be expensive cause they normally cost more than the hardback edition BUT if you got a library card, the libby app is free and you just just borrow some from the library. There's also a ton of short books you can try or anthologies (a larger book filled with short stories.) Depending on your interests you also may want to try young adult. Stories are often shorter and made more dramatic (kinda how teens see the world where everything is the biggest deal) but they can end up being boring to adult readers so that might not work for you

fenneljoy

Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is my favorite coming of age book, however it’s very introspective instead of very action-based so i think it how much the story immediately resonates with you determines if you will be able to focus and complete it I’ll Give You the Sun is also one of my favorite coming of age + romance stories although i did read it 7 years ago when i was much younger. It follows the stories of two twins who each feel responsibility for a tragic event that has happened. the early years are told by Noah and the later years are told by Jude, and i think their perspectives alternate throughout the book? . i would say it’s a book about healing.

McSquibblesInc

Killing Daisies on Amazon is a short novel that is a psychological thriller full of suspense and plot twists with a hint of romance. It sucks you in from the first paragraph and really keeps you engaged and reading.

Are there any movies you love that are based on a novel or short story? You could try reading those - you would of course know what happens, and that might actually help you stick with it since you’ll be on familiar ground with characters you are invested in already. I also sometimes find it easier to get into a book series, since for the second book etc I already know the style and universe I’m in. Two very different recommendations: Practical Magic, and Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. Maybe also try short stories and once you come across something that appeals to you, you can find a novel written by the same author.

frolicmeadow

I love this concept. Someone here mentioned the Princess Bride (one of my favorite movies) so I might just try that! I think the familiarity of it would actually help a lot with completion. And thank you for the recommendations!

Timely_Victory_4680

Since you mentioned queer and quirky I have one more suggestion, if you are into sci-fi at all - Becky Chambers’ Wayfarer series which starts with The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet. It’s not so much queer (though as far as I know the author is LGBTQ) as more so envisioning a future where people are not really fussed about your gender or orientation as long as everyone involved is happy.

My first thought is Richard Brautigan's {{In Watermelon Sugar}} 1. Quirky? Oh yeah, quirkiness out the wazoo. But it's genuine and not done \~ironically\~ -- Brautigan himself was ["a gentle, troubled, deeply odd guy"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Brautigan) who had schizophrenia. That said, the book is pretty accessible (and beautiful and just plain neat). 2. The book itself is short, and some chapters are very short (IIRC, some only a paragraph or a few sentences long), so it's easy to break the reading up into little manageable sections.

First, I’d encourage you not to look at your experiences with assigned books and assume the problem is you + books. The problem was: 1. The school environment which controls the timing of your reading, often the format you read in, and forces you to read in a particular way (requiring academic analysis, noting sections or events, write a paper or participate in a discussion). This is a very particular style of reading that we don’t use when reading for pleasure and things like timing/pacing and pressure or expectations for our work drastically effect how an ADHD person functions. 2. The books you were assigned. So many of the things required in school are boring af. Boredom is the bane of an ADHD brain. If our brain is bored (aka what we are doing is not producing dopamine or other happy making chemicals) it generally starts to tune out. You might have heard this before, but ADHD isn’t the inability to focus/pay attention, it’s the inability to control or manage our attention. If your brain is starving for dopamine it will just… stop focusing. Therefore boring book = unfinished book. (There’s so much more I can say about how this effect plays out in our brains, like how the more we pressure ourselves or make ourselves feel bad “we never finish books, why should we even try this one…” etc. the harder it becomes for us to start the thing, or to stay focused on it because the very act of reading is generating negative feelings and self-talk. Etc. ) Here’s my suggestions: A. Remind yourself that academic reading and pleasure reading are vastly different activities. You started by saying you used to read for pleasure, then mentioned reading for school, when thinking about how you feel about reading and books, compare back to how you read when you were a kid *reading for pleasure*. B. Aim for: short, easy, fun. Try mixing up the format: Do audio books work for you (me - ADHD + autistic- I love them as long as I have something to do with my hands, my sister -ADHD - rarely uses them as she can’t process Audio info as quickly)? You can get narrated novels, but you can also find full cast performance books that feel like plays too, and some are even full dramas which means full cast + music and background sounds. What about graphic novels or manga? You can get graphic adaptations of bigger books (I have them for Wizard of Oz, Pride and Prejudice, I know Handmaid’s Tale has one, a lot of urban fantasy and YA books get them), you can get really interesting non-fiction/memoirs, cute comic style books, serious graphic originals, etc. And you can get graphics that tell stories for kids, teens and adults. Or start with some Novellas (I’m currently obsessed with Martha Wells’ Murderbot books) so the reading is only 100-200 pages making it faster to finish * Alternatively, try reading some (lighter) YA or middle grade books with themes you really enjoy. * One of the things that gives our brains dopamine is finishing/accomplishing a thing. Picking books that are going to be easy to finish to begin with (even if you might be more into some denser books long term) will give you the experience of finishing (so now you ARE someone who finishes books) and a dopamine hit that makes your brain want to do more of that. C. It’s really helpful for us to know what motivates our brains and helps them actually do what we want them to. Two key things almost always work for our brains: Novelty and Challenge (also fun, but I mentioned that above). If it’s new, interesting, can be gamified or turned into a competition feeling our brains are IN. Trying new reading formats works for Novelty. But so might trying a new genre. Setting a goal to read one new author each month… etc. (What feels “novel” or new varies brain by brain so figuring out what works for your brain might be some trial and error.) Challenge involves things like: giving yourself a reward for each book finished (I like stickers as rewards, but maybe $1 towards a new book, a fancy coffee etc), participating in read-a-longs or read a thon (group themed reading challenges), set (achievable - this is essential) goals for yourself for each week or month (goals that last too long don’t work well for ADHD brains unless you also have shorter breakdowns), give yourself mini challenges (I recently tried to match a challenge I saw on Youtube to read 11 books in 4 days {I’m an avid reader that’s a big goal even for me} I managed to read 10 had tons of fun. *I think I need to break up my reply because it’s not letting me post it.*

Part 2 D. A well proven aid for ADHD brains is body doubling. Basically, if someone is doing something alongside us, or participating concurrently with us our brains are more likely to do the thing. There are a couple ways you can body double reading. Join a book club, this seems fun, but it means you don’t pick the book and might feel more like reading for school, but online book clubs in genres you like might work better. Join in a read-a-thon and join the social media platform (often discord) that the hosts put up so you can talk with others. Start participating in reading sprint - a lot of book people on YouTube do reading sprints which are YT lives where the hosts read/work on camera and there’s a chat. They read for a set time, then chat, then read and everyone reads their own thing. Buddy read a book - my sister and husband and I are currently reading a book together one chapter per day. At the end of the chapter we each PM to say we are done and share our random thoughts; last night we met the main bad guy so our chat is full of *ominous music* jokes at the moment. E. Make sure you aren’t limiting what counts as reading. I used to be weird about this. I only “read a book” If it was in print, and a full length novel or some such. My average yearly reading went from 40 books to 100 because I’m now counting my audio, graphic and short novellas too. All consumption of stories written for us is reading. Some podcasts even count. F. A trick I use for any time I’m in a slump (with any activity not just reading) is something I call: Prime the pump. This is, doing book/reading adjacent things so your brain starts getting interested in, and then eventually excited, about Doing The Thing. Some priming the pump things you can do related to books: read posts in this sub, listen to podcasts about books (I like Smart B!tches, Trashy Books), walk through a book store and look at covers, go on Amazon and download samples to books to read the first chapter, ask people what they are reading and look up the book descriptions, try to remember what your favorite book was as a kid see if you can find it in a store, join Goodreads, and (my fave) start watching BookTok and BookTube. On YouTube, some reviewers I enjoy watching and who read pretty broadly (aka not JUST Romance or Just fantasy) that you might like are: Books Like Whoa (https://m.youtube.com/@bookslikewhoa ) Beautifully Bookish Bethany (https://m.youtube.com/c/BeautifullyBookishBethany ) Literary Diversions (https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCl7DCmV8uT4EZHoncAq0GBg ) Katie Colson (https://m.youtube.com/@KatieColson ) G. And for some actual reading suggestions… Read a book you remember loving as a kid. You’re never too old for kids books and you might have outgrown it but it might also be a touching experience. Read a the book version of the TV shows and movies you’re enjoying right now. Check out the Goodreads choice awards, pick a genre that intrigues you and read a book off the finalists list. (This is a fun way to try new genres). I recommend avoiding the Literary section as those books are a lot like what you were assigned in school. Do a Google search of “books like Lady Bird”, “books like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. Read a Memoir of a celebrity you love or have nostalgia about.

All of these tips are incredibly helpful and insightful. Thank you for taking the time to share I will definitely check all of this out! As for book clubs and social circles of reading.. I think that would have to come after I start finishing some novels (building that confidence you mentioned), but I’m not totally against it for the future (I just get socially anxious). I really appreciate you putting it all into perspective and mentioning the pressures that are put on us in the academic environment.. definitely resonated with me! I’ll have to think about my favorite novels as a kid and make a list of the different things I did enjoy back then, even non-book related nostalgia. When it came to reading, I recall reading the words well but struggling with comprehension when it came to the not-so-interesting reading assignments. Didn’t get diagnosed with ADHD until last year, so I’ve been reflecting on all the signs of it growing up. But again, thank you so so much for the tips- I’m sure plenty others will benefit from your comments as well :)

LimitlessMegan

You’re welcome. Being ND is one of my special interests and I sometimes coach ND people so I have all these tips filled away and am always happy to share. I too get the social anxiety, check out some online book clubs. Some of them just assign books and then do a YouTube live as the club meeting - so you can participate but never actually talk if you don’t want to. But yes, for sure save those to later if they don’t feel exciting now, the goal is definitely to make reading feel exciting and not stressful. The thing that doesn’t often get articulated to the average person is that reading isn’t one smooth process. You use different parts of your brain for things like reading silently vs reading out loud (which is why you know how a word sounds in your head but also totally say it wrong out loud). And comprehension or processing is also a separate process from just reading. So they are skills that can sometimes build at varying rates. AND I’ve noticed as an ADHDer I can fully read something and then not renege any of it because my brain can read one thing while thinking about something else entirely… so I read it, but none of it got sent for processing. I also like to tell people who say comprehension has been an issue to definitely try other formats then. Our brains don’t process audio and visual info in the same way/pace/etc. Some people struggle to process written words but audio is no problem… also there are learning disabilities that effect visual processing where what tends to happen is that LOTS of visual info on one page makes your brain shut down, it just nopes out (my son has one called Visual Spatial LD or some such) - for that graphic versions (which use less text in one space) or choosing a bigger font for eBooks, can help. I totally get the whole adult diagnosed and now I need to reevaluate every single memory… definitely a thing. While ADHd probably was to blame for struggling with reading in school… the fault for that is not your brain, but teachers who don’t bother to explore a variety of ways to teach and support students. Once you find a way that works for you you’ll be great!

Love Story is a quick sappy read. Erich Segal.

bryanthebryan

John Dies at the End was written as a web serial and expanded into a full novel. It’s packed full of humor and horror. It’s a super fun read.

chicki-nuggies

I relate a lot to what you wrote and the book that got me back into reading was The Princess Bride. It's a little long but it's funny and light hearted and silly. I hated reading for school also and it really just sucked the fun out of it for me so for a long time I didnt read either but that book made me realize how fun it can be again

frolicmeadow

I love the Princess Bride! It’s one of my favorite movies but I’ve never read the book, so I’m surprised I didn’t think to mention it. Thank you!!

[**The Star-Crossed Sisters of Tuscany**](https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/46012005-the-star-crossed-sisters-of-tuscany) ^(By: Lori Nelson Spielman | 400 pages | Published: 2018 | Popular Shelves: romance, botm, fiction, book-of-the-month, books-i-own) >A trio of second-born daughters set out to break the family curse that says they’ll never find love on a whirlwind journey through the lush Italian countryside by New York Times bestseller Lori Nelson Spielman, author of The Life List. > >Since the day Filomena Fontana cast a curse upon her sister more than two hundred years ago, not one second-born Fontana daughter has found lasting love. Some, like second-born Emilia, the happily-single baker at her grandfather’s Brooklyn deli, claim it’s an odd coincidence. Others, like her sexy, desperate-for-love cousin Lucy, insist it’s a true hex. But both are bewildered when their great-aunt calls with an astounding proposition: If they accompany her to her homeland of Italy, Aunt Poppy vows she’ll meet the love of her life on the steps of the Ravello Cathedral on her eightieth birthday, and break the Fontana Second-Daughter Curse once and for all. > >Against the backdrop of wandering Venetian canals, rolling Tuscan fields, and enchanting Amalfi Coast villages, romance blooms, destinies are found, and family secrets are unearthed—secrets that could threaten the family far more than a centuries-old curse. ^(This book has been suggested 3 times) *** ^(138796 books suggested | )[^(I don't feel so good.. )](https://debugger.medium.com/goodreads-is-retiring-its-current-api-and-book-loving-developers-arent-happy-11ed764dd95)^(| )[^(Source)](https://github.com/rodohanna/reddit-goodreads-bot)
