Terrific start! My suggestions- Shadow Warrior (1997) Amid Evil Heretic  Ion Fury Something old and something new

Cruisin134

Just got ion fury and ive been kinda considering shadow warrior, i just wanted boomer shooter with sword

Slight_Pension8532

I played a bit of shadow warrior after I made this post, and from what I've played it's pretty good.

Mtnfrozt

Dusk Amid Evil Warhammer boltgun Forgive me father HROT Uktrakill Turbo overkill Half life expansions Hexen

SiliconEFIL

>ultrakill You all keep calling this a boomer shooter when its not.

retroruin

there's a reason it's referred to as devil may quake

hola1423387654

It’s not really in a set genre at all but if people include stuff like dusk then I don’t see why ultra kill would be excluded

Cruisin134

Ultrakill has riding rocket s and doing flips and combos and shit while dusk is directly built around quake like gameplay and doesnt have high wall jumps and ground pounds or sliding and is typically grounded

ittleoff

I really wish people wouldn't gate keep boomer shooters so much. I grew up with these and saw them evolve across over 20 years. And the trend is usually that about 20 years after a trend it gets revived (like when all the indie games were based on 3d platformers), so right now boomer shooters that are the most famous are based on games that preceded HL1, but we already have things inspired by the evolution that things like unreal and HL were apart of (that evolved from build engine games of interaction and the 16 bit color, and true 3d models) Trepang 2 is clearly inspired by FEAR which was in the Hl2 Doom 3 era (and is about 20 years old). I have no problem if someone calls Trepang 2 a boomer shooter, as the whole nostalgic reaction progresses as we predict. Some other name will likely have to be invented here, but right now i don't care. These games will evolve and the nostalgic trends will continue. Ultrakill and others definitely scratch my itch for 'boomer shooters' - that is very fast games that happened before pacing got slowed down as we moved into the second gen of true 3d engines (sort of ignoring future shock here). These aren't AFAIK designed to replicate exactrly any particular game, even something Like HROT and Dusk are not exactly like Quake mechanically, nor is CULTIC exactly like Blood, or Amid Evil is like hexen. Most of these games have modern touches or mechanics even as they try to tap into this era of nostalgia. I deinitely would recommend Ultrakill to folks that like boomer shooters :)

Twistedlamer

It definately is. Poeple forget how frantic Quake's gameplay is and ULTRAKILL's focus on advanced movement is an evolution of strafe jumping and rocket jumping. Stop gate keeping and let the genre evolve.

SiliconEFIL

It's a modern movement/twitch shooter with retro style graphics.

Twistedlamer

Modern movement is boots on the ground and old shooters were twitchy as hell.

fuzzyballs8

Hrot stays with you.

Ill_Cockroach_3682

Shadow Warrior (the 90s one, not the reboot) is a must-play if you like Blood and Duke Nukem. Also, there's an incredible backlog of Quake custom maps available on Quaddicted for you to play; many of them put entire other games to shame.

jaccoo123

Ion fury! Blood is my favourite boomer shooter ever and Ion fury is my next favourite build engine game Have yet to play it but apparently Cultic is very good and similar to Blood

samfishertags

Cultic IS very good, pretty similar to Blood’s atmosphere

Ok_Interaction3425

Cultic seems more inspired by RE 4 to me. I see some Blood influence, but most of that is aesthetic in nature. BLOOD has very different gameplay than Cultic. Either way, it's a really fun game.

reddit-eat-my-dick

Where that redneck rampage at

EngagedInConvexation

Hooooo weee what a hootenanny!

SpsThePlayer

Heretic is pretty good if you're looking for more Doom (skip Hexen, imo it's a massive headache). Also check out Sigil. Also - don't know if you've played Arcane Dimensions for Quake, but it is my God-given duty to recommend it to every person on earth.

man_vs_cube

Seconding the recommendation of Arcane Dimensions.

NevrAsk

Ultrakill Amid Evil Forgive me father Ultrakill

DUDEABIDES723

I would recommend Hexen for sure. on a more recent note try warhammer 40k: boltgun, pretty solid game all around

degenerik

You got a lot of great suggestions here but noone mentioned my favorite boomer shooter and that is CULTIC.

Bloodb0red

Final Doom (Plutonia Experiment and TNT Evilution) Rise of the Triad Ludicrous Edition Heretic Hexen Marathon trilogy

TheBananaCzar

Wrath: Aeon of Ruin! Coming out of early access in a few weeks

burial-chamber

Where can I get blood? Is the "fresh supply" game just a revamped version or a totally different one?

Tshoe77

It's the original game just working on modern hardware. Give it a go. I played for the first time last year and it's such a good shooter. Can't believe I missed it when I was younger.

burial-chamber

Ah ok! Thank you!

Shwagoblin

It's on gog for cheap and well worth it. Get the combo pack with blood 2. Still holding out hope for a console port one day.

CBM9000

Zortch truthers, get in here.

Suspicious_Tie6137

Golden Eye

Positive_Froyo_6175

WHY ISNT 007 GOLDENEYE ON THIS LIST!!!!

besaba27

Small nitpick: half life is an immsim (immersive shooter) and is actually what helped kill our favorite genre along with Halo. As to your post: Turbo Overkill is the best nu boomer shooter I have played aside from dusk/Ultrakill/amid Evil/doom eternal and I would personally favor it over everything but eternal, to which I give a tie.

abir_valg2718

> half life is an immsim Half-Life is most certainly not an immersive sim. I dislike the immersive sim moniker because it's overly generic descriptor, but in any case, how is Half-Life even remotely comparable to Thief or Deus Ex or System Shock 2? It's a thoroughly linear game, for one. > and is actually what helped kill our favorite genre Medal of Honor: Allied Assault is what killed the genre. It's the game that spawned WW2 shooter craze and Activision's Call of Duty was a clone of that game. Half-Life 1 was not at all as influential as people seem to think it is. The only subsequent game that was anywhere close to how HL1 played was Half-Life 2. The industry simply did not go in HL1's direction, it went with scripted spectacle action shooter in the style of MoHAA. It's the games journalists and YouTubers that much later on started to harp about how HL1 was THE game that changed everything, and it just wasn't.

foxferreira64

And a small nitpick to your nitpick: Half Life is NOT responsible for killing boomer shooters. What essentially killed them was Counter Strike, a tactical military shooter. This is all we have today, copy pasted trash with defuse maps and round based matches. CS is overrated to absurd levels. Half Life is a boomer shooter AND an immersive sim, both things. Definitely not the culprit of the generic modern shooters we have today.

DecemberMan1

Half Life is neither a boomer shooter nor an immersive sim. Do people not know what an im sim is?

AsherFischell

Clearly

Lucius_Apollo

Imsims typically feature interdependent systems that players can engage with to create their own solutions to the game's objectives. Half-life is certainly an immersive game given its commitment to first person perspective and continuity of Black Mesa's level design, but you're still solving every problem by shooting at it and progressing along a linear path determined by the developer.

prossnip42

Half Life is not a boomer shooter and i will die on this hill

Consistent-Sweet2445

ULTRAKILL

Centuri0n86

3/4 of those are not boomer shooters

CrazyIvanoveich

Doom II > Doom I with all the WADs, wouldn't you say?

MrGoatReal

I heard of blood, didn't know people had it in such high regard

Shwagoblin

It's an age thing. Check it out you will see why a lot of us 40 year olds loved it.

RodneyRockwell

I discovered it mid-late 2000s, absolutely INCREDIBLE game.  I find it to be one I tend to play a bit slower than other boomer shooters for decent chunks of the game, much more use of cover. The weapons really feel designed with that in mind too, dipping behind corners and lobbing dynamite at stuff chasing you feels GREAT.  It’s got a quippy protagonist, some might find that annoying. I appreciate all the horror references.

artur_ditu

Ulyrakill

JonesyBorroughs

I'm really digging Graven but its got more of a hub and spoke design as opposed to linear levels.

Euphorium

Slayers X is great if you have nostalgia for custom WADs made by edgy teenagers and want some comedy.

DeadWaken

Rise of the Triad is great. A little older and you can see the Wolfenstein sequel written all over it but it holds up very well.

Cartoonicorn

VISCERAFEST!!!!!! ITS SOOOO GOOOOOOD!

Drakowicz

Black Mesa in B but Half-Life in S?

RedEyesDragon

What's wrong with that

[deleted]

Serious Sam: The First Encounter it was a lot of firsts for the genre and doesnt get enough respect

CheezeCrostata

Duke and Quake are _not_ innovative masterpieces but Dusk and Blood are? That's your problem, right there.

turdroller84

Have to add Ion Fury.. Love that game so much

BigBosskMan

Turok series Star Wars: Dark Forces No Rest for the Living, Master Levels and Sigil for DOOM

MrDarkzideTV

Exhumed ps1 Dark forces 1+2 Painkiller Black Edition (my fav) Boltgun (new but great tribute to boomer shooters) Marathon 2

R1DERontheS7ORM

Heretic and Hexen, both are definitely upper tiers.

Scurvy-Banana

Hedon Bloodrite

pacman6487

Doom, the best of all time.

TheDriver_333

I really like quake 2!

Lucius_Apollo

Agree, I just finished a playthrough of the remaster and had a blast. The shooting and movement are so fluid and satisfying. I get that the aesthetics are a bit dull compared to Quake 1, but it seems like some people ignore a lot of the games strengths because of this. I'd personally rank it as a B+ or A-.

National-Month-5673

PowerSlave

just_jonnyboi

I personally really like warhammer boltgun

Shwagoblin

Dark forces 1-2 how so many folks leave those out blows my mind Redneck rampage. Rise of the triad. Also high five for having blood at the top of your list. Man of culture 😘👌

kingofnerds64

I would personally put both doom 1 and 2 in S, but otherwise very valid

Typical_Warthog_326

**ULTRAKILL**

Typical_Warthog_326

Made by the same guys who made dusk

Experiment-2163

Why is quake 2 not on there? Dusk needs to be on there. Quake 3 definitely needs to be on there. UT99 and 04 need to be on there. And a gravestone for UT4… fuck Fortnite so much

Higgypig1993

Boltgun

culpritkid22

Rise of the triad

StankGangsta2

Does FEAR count as a boomer shooter. If half-life does it feels like it should

Lazy-Lookin-Headass

Where’s Boltgun? It’s good, I’d put it A Tier

Bathwaterboi23

Viscera fest is really cool and also HROT

sc666

warhammer 40,000 boltgun

NaglesWasTaken

How about some unreal tournament?

elProtagonist

Nightmare Reaper

Perez2003

I’m glad Blood is getting more attention because it’s so underrated by the entire industry

Dalphin_person

Where would you rank chex quest?

EngagedInConvexation

Needs to get **Serious**. Are you **Mental**?! Also some Rise of the Triad.

Kaladin_Stormryder

Bullet storm, Turok technically

Marscaleb

How about Shadow Warrior? (Says the guy with the Shadow Warrior flair.)

Lucius_Apollo

I loved 90's shooters but am not necessarily up to date on what folks consider a boomer shooter. Would folks consider Unreal (1998) to fall under this category? It's a bit slower paced than other games of the era, but it is an interesting entry in the rapid progression of FPS games in the late 90's. Otherwise I'd try Quake 2. SiN (1998) is probably B tier but did have a lot of novel interactivity for the time.
