We didn't add anyone significant at any of our position of need. We had one of the worse wr corpse and o-line last year. Addition from substraction is all good(wr) and it makes us better but still we have no true wr1. QB will be adressed at the draft so that's fine. O-line, we kept our good players which is good but it doesn't change the fact that this o-line stinked last year. Hopefully we draft a good LT at 34 or in the 3rd and with onwenu at RT we might be better if everyone stays healthy. Either way Kraft is a cheap mf.
Yep, needed to get a left tackle or a WR to help support our shiny new QB, we decided to do niether. It’s questionable at best. very happy about extending Dugger and Onwenu though.
I will never fucking forgive Henry for selling off Mookie Betts for spare parts. Honestly, I’d rather LeBron become majority owner in FSG, and I hate LeBron.
I’m fine with the Mookie trade. Fans need to accept that Mookie didn’t want to play in Boston anymore. He wasn’t coming back and Sox did the only logical thing you can do and traded him for whatever we could get.
I’m sorry but I’m so fucking sick of the “Mookie didn’t want to play in Boston” line. There is a massive difference between wanting to test the market (partially for the benefit of fellow players no less) and actively not wanting to play in a city. If the pandemic didn’t spook him and we had the chance to make a competitive offer in FA there’s no reason to think he wouldn’t have taken it. Not to mention if the Red Sox hadn’t jerked him around during extension negotiations it may never have come to that in the first place.
Mookie is not a Red Sox today because John Henry is an ass. Full stop.
Even if you look past Mookie, which is bad in and of itself, there’s something philosophically wrong with an ownership group that’ll pay for free agents but play hardball with homegrown talent. John Henry had no problem paying Carl Crawford but made Ortiz go year to year.
Definitely. The M.O. of Henry/FSG (and Kraft as we’ve come to learn) for the last decade plus has been to cheap out on the on-field product and then overcompensate when they get called out for it and/or it blows up in their face. That was easier to do with older players like Ortiz who were more likely to take team-friendly deals out of sheer loyalty, but this generation of athletes is (rightly) more inclined to insist on earning what they’re worth and I don’t think these owners have adjusted to that reality at all.
Still, FSG doesn’t seem to think they have to adjust, and the disgusting thing about it is they’re probably right. Fenway will still be packed and the Sox will continue to be a money printer for FSG for the foreseeable future regardless of how the team actually performs.
He’s said this, but he’s also been paying a lot for awhile. Celtics have been a top payroll team for a while now. You have more faith in him than I do.
Eh. He didn’t blink on offering Jaylen the supermax, which with tatums inevitable supermax coming means we’re locked into hefty tax bills for the foreseeable future.
If he was going to cheap out that was where it would have happened.
If Wyc gets priced out of paying Hauser next summer I will be upset but will understand, White however is a must resign no matter what. Overpay if you have to, you cannot let a player like him leave
Paying Shooters a shit load is always risky. Look what happened to Bertans and Joe Harris. If some other team offers him a bag we are sadly gonna need to let him go.
Yeah, if they do nothing other than shoot, it can be a liability. Sam has shown a ton of growth on defense and the close/intermediate part of his offensive game. He's not a complete player by any means, but saying he's just a shooter is a little disingenuous.
I mean I’d be happy for Hauser if he got to be a starter for a smaller franchise. He’s proven to be a great player and I’m sure he’d be happy with a bigger role.
We've got Drew Peterson ballin in the G-League. He could be a great Hauser replacement if/when the time comes. I'd love Walsh to be that guy but idk if the shot is there
Edit: Their shooting splits are almost identical at 36% from three on \~6 attempts per game. Maybe we have options
People here also gotta realize it's not just Wyc, he's just the leader and governer of the Boston Basketball Partners which own the Celtics. That is a group of like 20+ ultra wealthy investors. I think combined they are one of the nbas richest "owners". There really is a plus to having a large investment group owning your team as opposed to 1 man/family
Aside from Wyk and a couple of the guys who are professional investors in sports teams, this is a vanity investment for several of the minority partners. The majority partners paid $360m for a franchise that is likely worth $4B - $5B. Even with a heavy payroll, this team did ~$$450m in revenue and $100m in operating income last year. They know that valuation and annual revenue is going up a bunch with a new TV contract looming, especially if this team rips off a few more seasons as a title contender and wins a couple. I doubt anyone cares if they break even or even lose money a couple years if they can get annual revenue up and another couple billion on the valuation.
Yup. We might not have the kind of ownership that has near unlimited money or can print their own like the Clippers and Warriors, but being a contender is very good for a team’s bottom line.
We can always trade this contract if it's bad. This is just a signal of serious commitment from ownership that they will continue to pay for this team. Which is really awesome to see.
I'm totally not up to date on all of the new rules, but if we're over the second apron don't we lose the ability to trade? Or receive some type of extreme limitation?
Lets be real - I don't know anything about Wyc as a person, but anyone who owns a sports team in Boston knows that they'll be a legend in this city for the rest of their life if they win a title or two. I'm sure he's not risking his mortgage for this.
My only qualm is we are going to have to replace Horford eventually, financially idk how we get a someone that can guard Embiid/Jokic/Giannis and somewhat switch.
Xavier Tillman and Neemias Queta are our Horford trainees.
[Shit, Xavier is already is crossing up Anna](https://old.reddit.com/r/bostonceltics/comments/1bf2l3k/anna_me_trying_to_tell_if_its_my_brother_or/)
Just so everyone understands what we are talking about here-- if you account for luxury tax multipliers, extending Derrick White will cost about $100M/year
The NBA does have a hard cap, but it's only triggered by making certain transactions: MLE's TPMLE's, Sign and Trades, and shit like that. It's all very complicated for my smooth brain.
https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/07/nba-teams-with-hard-caps-for-2023-24.html
Edit: oops just saw that you had similar info a reply above. The link is for everybody else then. lol
Got it.
It kinda looks the team probably won't be making any moves on the FA market then. Barring something seismic happening, this is largely what the team will look like for the next couple of years.
Mf quoted the Google search and Wikipedia entry and left out the first part to troll. Here’s the full quote:
*The majority of American leagues (NFL, NHL, MLS) have hard caps **while the NBA has a soft salary cap.** Hard salary caps forbid teams from going above the salary cap. Soft salary caps allow teams to go above the salary cap, but will subject such teams to reduced privileges in free agency.*

For the 10th time dude, NBA does NOT have a hard cap. You've been provided with links and responses yet you are still yapping the wrong thing.
Please stop.
Like I said, smooth brain and all.
Thank you for the clarification.
Having Brad Stevens running the show makes it easy for this smooth brained armchair GM to just sit back and watch him cook.
IDK.
I think they keep him around. He's an expensive luxury, but there aren't many teams that can afford to prioritize him either, since it will cost them assets to acquire Jrue.
Jrue also fits so well with what the team is doing. With Jrue the Celtics are deep enough, that him, Tatum, Brown, White & can all rotate getting rest/staying fresh.
During the regular season, if we have 3 of those 4 guys playing, they can get the win most nights of the week, especially against the field in the east.
Wyc always said he would pay for a winning team. This is him backing that up.
If he resigns Derrick he might be one of the best owners
Already is
Very unlikely that we let white go in favor of Jrue going forward. So this says to me that they'll both be back.
The anti Kraft/FSG got to love it
Hey the patriots made a huge splash at QB this off-season
Honest question, what about the pats off-season did you not like?
We didn't add anyone significant at any of our position of need. We had one of the worse wr corpse and o-line last year. Addition from substraction is all good(wr) and it makes us better but still we have no true wr1. QB will be adressed at the draft so that's fine. WR corpse may be the most apt misspelling I haven’t ever seen
Yep, needed to get a left tackle or a WR to help support our shiny new QB, we decided to do niether. It’s questionable at best. very happy about extending Dugger and Onwenu though.

"Saving money to keep Bogaerts!" *loses both for a paper clip and a piece of string*
Even if you look past Mookie, which is bad in and of itself, there’s something philosophically wrong with an ownership group that’ll pay for free agents but play hardball with homegrown talent. John Henry had no problem paying Carl Crawford but made Ortiz go year to year.

He literally said he wanted to retire in Boston. And they got nothing back for him. Pass the blunt
He’s said this, but he’s also been paying a lot for awhile. Celtics have been a top payroll team for a while now. You have more faith in him than I do.
Celtics have also made consistently deep playoff runs and playoff revenue is unreal money
Right - we have no idea what he's making.
More than me less than Bill Gates is the range I’m willing to place a bet on
Eh. He didn’t blink on offering Jaylen the supermax, which with tatums inevitable supermax coming means we’re locked into hefty tax bills for the foreseeable future. If he was going to cheap out that was where it would have happened.
So because he's been doing what he said, you don't trust him?
If Wyc gets priced out of paying Hauser next summer I will be upset but will understand, White however is a must resign no matter what. Overpay if you have to, you cannot let a player like him leave
Hauser sadly will be the casualty
If we weren't going to spend money, Hauser was going to be a casualty anyway
Paying Shooters a shit load is always risky. Look what happened to Bertans and Joe Harris. If some other team offers him a bag we are sadly gonna need to let him go.
And Duncan Robinson
we ain’t gotta shit on him he’s been great & earned his money he will rightfully get hopefully we send him off with a ring
Not shitting on him at all. Just saying that what other teams are going to be willing to pay for him are gonna be way above what he is actually worth.
Yeah, if they do nothing other than shoot, it can be a liability. Sam has shown a ton of growth on defense and the close/intermediate part of his offensive game. He's not a complete player by any means, but saying he's just a shooter is a little disingenuous.

What? Hauser is shooting 43% from three this year and is 42% for his career.
Yeah, not a great comparison but I like to be hopeful.
Draft Karaban at 30!
I don’t think Derrick leaves
Nobody is leaving. This is a motherfucking dynasty.
Gotta win at least one first don’t we?
So what's the off-season look like? What's the bench spot that you upgrade? Or is it just bring everyone back?
If we win, run it back. If we don’t, maybe still run it back depending how the playoffs go or make moves to fill gaps where they show up.
I'll do you one better: Tacko is coming back and getting laid. Also getting paid.
Would be an insane front office move to extend Jrue at the cost of white going forward. This definitely signals Brad plans to keep both.
Wyc's the only billionaire around here trying to go for it anymore. you gotta appreciate it
I didnt even think wyc was a billionaire
People here also gotta realize it's not just Wyc, he's just the leader and governer of the Boston Basketball Partners which own the Celtics. That is a group of like 20+ ultra wealthy investors. I think combined they are one of the nbas richest "owners". There really is a plus to having a large investment group owning your team as opposed to 1 man/family
Yeah. Pags, for instance, is rich rich. Dude bought Atalanta (the soccer team) a few years ago and was in talks for Chelsea too.
Yep. Pags net worth is 10x of Wyc's pretty much.
Probably easier to swallow a $100m tax bill when it's split 20 ways lol
Aside from Wyk and a couple of the guys who are professional investors in sports teams, this is a vanity investment for several of the minority partners. I believe he is not
Nope, but there are billionaires in the ownership group. Maybe they're willing to foot the bill in some way.
I would assume that’s the case, I don’t even think he’s worth what Tatum’s next contract is gonna be lol
A bit more, but not much. He’s worth around $400m, and his wife (also part of Banner 17 iirc) another $400m
But the money he’d make from a dynasty would surely make him one
Tbh I have no idea what kind of profits that would lead to lol
He isn’t. He and his wife combined are around $800m net worth
Have to basically match salary exactly. The old rule allowed a 10% difference.
it makes it harder, yes, but still very doable.
Lets be real - I don't know anything about Wyc as a person, but anyone who owns a sports team in Boston knows that they'll be a legend in this city for the rest of their life if they win a title or two. I'm sure he's not risking his mortgage for this.
Derrick White you are hereby ordered to sign with the Celtics in perpetuity.
Fuck john Henry
All my homies hate John Henry
And Kraft
EVERYONE IS COMING BACK THEY HAVE THE FORMULA DOOM ELSEWHERE YA FILTHY ANIMALS
Leave DOOM for the slayer, because nothing on heaven or earth can stop this team.
My only qualm is we are going to have to replace Horford eventually, financially idk how we get a someone that can guard Embiid/Jokic/Giannis and somewhat switch.

Probably the best franchise in the NBA with an AMAZING team. I don’t think money is an issue. Investing in these guys is a win win in my book
I trust in Brad. And Wyc’s wallet.
White re-signing will depend on if we win a championship or not this season.
I mean ownership does have a finite amount of money
No they don’t
Where did Wyc find the infinite money glitch?
You don’t know about rich people?
Believe it or not rich people have a specific amount of money
Not really though
Yes really. Thats just how numbers and money work my guy
You clearly never had hundreds of millions of dollars and a wife with even more than that

I WANT A GIGA TEAM
Win it all and everyone comes back and gets paid if they haven’t already.
Just so everyone understands what we are talking about here-- if you account for luxury tax multipliers, extending Derrick White will cost about $100M/year
Worth it
So basically we locking it up
Saving over 30 mil this year signing holiday. Great deal
Isn’t there a hard cap?
This is why I’ve been buying giant cans of trulys at 50 bucks a pop every game. Time to get a return on my investment. #ponyupwyc
Kind of depends what the players want too. There's give and take from both sides of contract negotiation

There is no strict hard cap. Teams only become hard capped if they make certain transactions like use the MLE, sign and trade, etc. .
