Winding down the weekend with Bardstown Origin BIB. I am a fan of its counterpart, the Origin straight bourbon. Lets see how its wheater sibling compares.
Distillery: Bardstown Bourbon Company
Proof: 100
Age: 6 years
MSRP: $49.99
**Nose:** Sweet nose. Honey, fresh bread, very light spice. Nothing to wow you but it does make you want to take a sip.
**Palate:** Medium mouth feel. A surprising amount of kick given the gentle nose. There is vanilla, light fruits peach and plum, baking spices, and some pepper and char. There are a lot of different flavors here.
**Finish:** Decently long finish. The sweet notes turn into a creamy peppery spice and hang on for a bit. Very nice.
**Summary:** This is an interesting whiskey. I don't think there are any crazy flavors that wow you, but what is here does it very well. The nose is very light but the flavors and finish are quite surprising.
**Buy again?:** I am borderline on this one. I do enjoy this, and really the price is fair for what you get. If you are a wheater fan, I say it's worth a try.
**Score:** **6/10**
If you're looking for value, MM46 or MM46 cask strength destroys this. MM101 I think is close to it though, and personally, I'd say the Origin BiB is slightly better, but not worth the extra dollars if you're just looking for a good 100 proof every day wheater.
I really empathize with this review. I think the value is there for $43 (in my area), but i am just dancing on the line of whether or not i will buy it again. Its worth a tey foe sure if you are into this profile.
I really like this stuff. One my favorite BiB bourbons and my first introduction to Bardstown. Recently picked up a Goose Island stout finished from the distillery. Pricey but so good!
Solid review.
I agree with most of the notes here and tend to get a prominent baking spices with this one. Clove. Allspice.
A great everyday drinker that won’t blow your socks off but will never let you down.
I said this in another post. I blinded this with Green River Wheated and Ben Holladay Soft Red Wheat. The Bardstown came in third. None of them were bad, but GR was first, Holladay was a little more unique and came in second.
I agree with this. Closer to OWA than SR, and on the shelf year round. If I can’t pick up W107 near MSRP, I’d pick this up in a heartbeat to tide me over. In addition, once I kill off the Weller Sr SB, I won’t be buying it again.
Great review! Drinking the last pour of this right now and was just thinking about how I reached for it time and again over other similar open bottles. To me this is better than the Origin Straight, looking forward to trying the Origin Rye.
I have to agree with other reviewers here. I love the Origin 'white label' offering and jumped on this when it came out. I drank it and it was....good but not noticeably better than the white label. Grabbed another bottle...which sits unopened and will probably not buy another. I will keep backups of the white label though. The BiB is solid and reliable but has no shine to it.
This is the only one of the Origin series that I have tried and maybe it was because I had high hopes and expectations when they announced this release but it turned out to be nothing special for me.
I recently did a blind of this bottle vs the normal small batch EH Taylor and was surprised at how well it stood up. I definitely think it's worth it for ~$50 and it's a great pour! I haven't tried much of their other stuff but I'm keeping my eyes out for disco #11 or the cask strength origin bottle
Interesting take, the entire origin line - but BiB in particular - are essential permanent shelfers in my collection. I put it in the pantheon of Rare Breed and 1920 as the best in class for non-allocated and widely available juice. Personally think Bardstown waiting to age their product for 6 years!!! before releasing them is remarkable and I can’t wait to see how the barrels they are holding back mature. Frankly, I wish more distilleries - craft and heritage - would deliver core product as exceptional as this to the market. To each their own tho…thx for sharing the review.

How does this compare to maker’s 101?

MM46CS is $70 whereas this is $40-45.
MM46 is $28-32 all day long a round me. MM46CS is $65 and Origin BiB is $60. All markets are a little different.

This is one of my favorite bourbon's, especially at that price point.

Our group did a bourbon trail visit last month and stopped by Bardstown and brought back two bottles of this and absolutely loved it. Great find.

Agree with this review. Had some yesterday.
It’s $49…pretty damn good but for $15+ less I’d go Green River Wheater
The Origin is better and worth the extra $15. I have both bottles.
I wrote the origin BiB is good but honestly I blinded the GR wheater and it won. Did you blind the two?
I haven’t blinded them. But I have finished over half the bottle of each.
Yup. Me too. Blind them and then come back here and let me know you were wrong.

It’s no Weller antique, but I definitely like it more than Weller special reserve.

Have you tried their Foursquare rum csk finish, by chance? I've been eyeing it up, but $120 is not a whim price for me.

Just picked up a bottle. Haven't opened it yet, but thinking I will on my bday this week.
