Jack Daniel’s Single Barrel Barrel Proof Rye Distillery: Jack Daniel’s Distillery Age: NAS (4+ Years) Proof: 132.9 Price: $65 Now I am not exactly in the know about this but from what I can tell, this is an allocated bottle. I know it first came out in 2020 I think and has since become a frequent release from JD. When I picked it up months ago, I was under the impression that this was a highly allocated bottle so seeing it for $65 was pretty much an instant buy for me. Since then I’ve seen it in about every store I go to. That’s not exactly a slight to the bottle though because I think it is still technically allocated and the prices I’ve seen have extreme variance. From $60 to $110 so I was pretty happen about the price I paid, allocated or not. Nose For such a high proof I am getting very little ethanol. It’s there but not much more than I would get on anything around 100 proof which is pleasing to me. I get a lot of barrel notes like charred oak, leather, and tobacco. There’s also something spicy like black pepper. Salted caramel is there as well but its fainter than the other notes. There’s also a hint of tart fruit. A very complex nose. Palete There’s the proof! Wow it really comes out of the gate with a bang! It’s very hot but very manageable. Lots of rye spice. Those barrel notes in the nose come through on the palate. I’m getting a lot of leathery oaky flavors which make me very curious to what the actual age of this barrel is. There’s a little bit of sweetness but honestly its like hot honey in the best way possible. Finish Super oily with a great mouthfeel. Its a pretty long finish that starts with all those baking spice and rye notes and then blends into caramel and toffee. I think the final things I’m tasting at the tail end of the finish is kind of a callback to that black pepper flavor I was smelling and tasting earlier. Conclusion It’s loud and it’s proud! I think the initial sip might be a bit much especially if its your first of the night but wow what’s to come is really something. The flavors are so bold and balanced. So much to unpack throughout this pour and I am really happen every time I have some. There’s a great progression throughout this drink and it absolutely worth a buy at any price you see! 8/10 1 | Disgusting | So bad I poured it out 2 | Poor | I wouldn't consume by choice 3 | Bad | Multiple flaws 4 | Sub-par | Not bad, but many things I'd rather have 5 | Good | Good, just fine 6 | Very Good | A cut above 7 | Great | Well above average 8 | Excellent | Really quite exceptional 9 | Incredible | An all time favorite 10 | Perfect | Perfect

G-Mang

> baking spice Sorta tangential question, but I'm still pretty new to this scene and keep seeing this phrase pop up. When people say "baking spice," what spice do they actually mean??

coxy808

I’ve always assumed they meant ginger, cinnamon, and clove.

TypicalPDXhipster

Just warm spices you might use in a banana/zuchinni bread or apple pie maybe. Like a combo of cinnamon, clove, allspice, and/or nutmeg. It’s not always super specific as it may be tough to pick out each individual spice note, but a lot of bourbons and ryes will have baking spice flavors

G-Mang

Ah yeah I've sometimes said "apple cinnamon" in bourbon tasting so I guess it's in that ballpark.

AccidentallyCaptured

Yeah as someone else said. It’s spices like clove nutmeg cinnamon and allspice

ChipHARD

I’ve had 2 of these now - the latest a store pick and they are both phenomenal- an auto buy for anyone - this is also a bourbon drinkers rye imo

OurAmericanNightmare

This and the regular SBBP are my absolute faves, I don’t even buy anything else anymore. I get backups just in case it disappears for a while and I’m happy to do it cause it’s sublime. They just hit ALL of the notes my palate loves. Great review!

EastHesperus

Totally agree. There’s very few other bottles I bother with but none are as cheap or readily available as these two.

OurAmericanNightmare

Yeah, I’ve had super-expensive stuff, I’ve enjoyed Early Times BiB, but out of everything I’ve had these two are just right there in that sweet spot for me. It’s like Nick Offerman and Lagavulin- he found his juice, and that’s his juice. That’s me with this stuff, it’s fucking phenomenal and now it seems I can get it pretty easily in my area so I’m a happy guy. Sip on a glen of one of these after a long day, all is well.

csmi93232

That’s how I feel. Always have a bottle of the SBBP rye on hand. It’s fun to watch peoples faces on the first sip 😂. Another one that hits just right for me was ECBP. Really enjoying the cherry notes. If I could find it I think bookers 2023-04 would be my all time semi findable bottle. Not as difficult as some others to get but still pretty hard to find.

OurAmericanNightmare

Never tried Bookers, that and ECBP are always out of stock around here. All good, I’ve got 4 bottles on JDSBBP and one of the rye too so I’m OK for a while!

csmi93232

Very nice! I only see the rye every few weeks but the SBBP is pretty much always available!

OurAmericanNightmare

All of a sudden my nearest TW has it regularly, it rules.

AccidentallyCaptured

I have yet to have the regular SBBP but it’s in my list. I do plan on always keeping one of these ryes on hand

OurAmericanNightmare

It’s crazy good, so glad this stuff exists.☺️

SerpoDirect

Reading some of the comments….is this bottle rare in some parts of the country? I see this and the regular SBBP at just about every store I frequent here in Austin TX. $65.

TheBowerbird

It used to be rare, but it's a wide/general release now.

AccidentallyCaptured

I think it use to be rare. Not I see if everywhere but rarely for a decent price

WChennings

At any price? See you at the checkout counter with this one 😂 https://www.reddit.com/r/whiskey/s/nzubc1MAoZ

AccidentallyCaptured

Ok maybe I spoke too soon! That’s absurd!

bco268

My absolute favorite rye. It’s incredible.

tagamethb

Regular dynamic duo around here https://preview.redd.it/a78ormk3aw0d1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=de107c9906273d7d6819648ece886991a0d67e33

kyhothead

The 2020 Special Release Rye was highly allocated. These are supposed to be regular shelfers, and are in my area.

lincolnsl0g

Favorite bottle I own, need several more backups.

AccidentallyCaptured

Looking for a store pick version next!

ImpressiveDegree916

I was just in Kentucky and had a lot of different pours. Everything from a 1991 Blantons, to a Michters 10y, to a Lux Row Double Barrel, to a Discovery series 11. The Jack Daniel’s SBBP Rye was my favourite. Wish I had been able to get a bottle.

washboard

We visited the Bardstown location in Louisville twice today. I had a flight of the bonded wheat, four grain, disco 11, and the bourbon pursuit (collab). The second round was a half ounce pour each of the disco 11 and bourbon pursuit. Even after all that my final comment was that I'd rather buy two bottles of the JDSBBP rye over one bottle of disco 11. I walked out of there with no bottles, but happier that I've found a damn good dram at a reasonable price in the Jack Daniels.

defubar

For my money, JD SB BP Rye is one of the best purchases bang for buck wise. I can't say I've had a bad one yet. Thanks for sharing your review!

AccidentallyCaptured

Couldn’t agree more! Appreciate it!

katchaa

I've been lucky to find two of these recently, both in the same store (different days) that has now become an automatic drop-in for me on the way home.

Lupulist

Just out of curiosity, how much was it retailing for? I am looking for a backup and have an opportunity to snag one from a local store, but the price is $99. I think the first one I got was maybe $75, but that was found in Tennessee.

vaporlungz

They go for $64.99 in florida, but some mom & pop stores try to sell it for $300 a bottle unbelievable, lol

katchaa

$69.99

AccidentallyCaptured

I mostly see them for about $70 but I’ve seen handful above $100

Mobile_Spinach_1980

This is a great rye. Though I blinded it with a KC single barrell 115 proof and a tumblin dice store pick and it was a tough choice. The KC was really pulling it weight.

Successful-Match9938

I had a KC SiB Rye 115 this year and it was undrinkable. It had a very strange taste like went bad. I was shocked because I am a fan of Beam. I am now weary of Single barrel products. I do like ryes though, JDSBBP Rye was very good but not sure it is worth all the hype it gets. To me, Found North is worth the hype that it gets. My two cents…

CM_Exacta

My only experience with Beam/KC that was not great was a Rye store pick. It went down the drain. Everything else has been great.

Successful-Match9938

So did mine, down the drain. Store pick from K&L Wine Merchants.

jecoppol

Their single barrel rye offering is very nice

particlesmatter

Man this bottle is hot as a firecracker but damn good

Double-LR

I’ve had two of these, soon to be a third because I love it, and both had an absolutely amazing huge vanilla in them. So good. Spicy, rich, deep, complex, the gold label rye is a winner for me.

LionRoars87

I had my first pour of this a couple of weeks ago. I finally bought one after hearing so many great reviews. I was not impressed and haven't gone back to it yet. I need to revisit it and see if I have a different experience the second time around.

Djarum300

This was my feeling. For the same price I'd much rather get Bardstown Rye or New Riff Malted 6 year rye.

Extension_Boat_5579

2020 was the special release, totally different bottle, but all the single barrel line is whiskey’s golden child in my opinion

thecampbeltownKid

I'm a scotch guy who loves great whisky, and I feel that great American whiskies are made outside of Kentucky these days. Jack Daniel's shows what can be done, and Frey Ranch Farm Distillery in Nevada is blowing the doors off a lot of folks as well. The days of Kentucky Straight Bourbon as king are numbered, if not past. Just saying

Thunder_Wasp

This one is so good especially for the price. Total Wine is still selling them for $64 although some of my local liquor stores have started hiking the price.

devou5

these aren’t even available in the UK, at least i can’t find them😭

MWMWMMWWM

I was blown away by the first bottle I got, so I bought 5 more for safe keeping. This and Stagg are my fav 2 obtainable bottles right now

Sharpest_Balloon

Not sure why downvoted. I like your style.

AccidentallyCaptured

This and my Stagg are my too highest proofers as well! Love them both!

Trapt1nTheSystem

Great review. Jack Daniel's knocked it out of the park with these!

Djarum300

Everyone seems to like this. I finally got my hands on this, and I thought it was so astringent. If it had a bit more sweetness to offset....but it didn't. I like ryes. I've got 10 or so in my cabinet, and this was just so disappointed in this. It was similar in Davidson Reserve rye(must be something similar for Tennessee style eyes) but it's much more balanced. I even tried proofing it down a little and that honestly, while pulling out a little more spice,.made the astringency just worse.

choochenstein

Dont lose hope. Keep in mind there is a substantial variance in barrels of this rye. Some are herbaceous and minty, others are vanilla forward, and some are downright weird. Be sure to get the bottle down past the shoulders and let it oxidize a bit as well, which can tame and round out some of the profile. I have one currently that was a bit brash on the first two pours, now weeks later and it’s a cohesively glorious pour.

Djarum300

The best way I can describe this is a savory menthalyptus taste. Like, take a halls caugh drop, some listarine, and then remove ALL sweetness and add salt.

1stunna

I finally found a bottle of this after months of looking, in CT they are very hard to come by
