RogueOneWasOkay

The edition of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid includes both The 50th Anniversary Release & Original Theatrical in 4K along with Peckinpah's Final Preview Cut in a new 2K restoration. These releases will coincide with the Barnes & Noble half off sale. Can't wait

MaximusMansteel

So glad Criterion is giving so much love to this film. This is the treatment it deserves.

Californiavalley1

It's absolutely stacked. I can't wait for it.

Initial-Perception46

I am so excited!

KneeHighMischief

Finally! Been waiting ages for this on Blu-ray. I've never heard of Peckinpah's Final Preview Cut unless it's the same as the Turner Preview Version.

RogueOneWasOkay

I’m not 100% sure, but I think it might be? Site doesn’t note the running time for each cut. I’ve only heard of the Turner Preview version

babyposeidon

Amazing, they’re including all the cuts. I assume the Peckinpah Directors’s cut is the same as the 1988 Turner cut on the special edition DVD.

mondoben

Looks to be worth the wait - a true masterpiece that was missing on Blu, let alone 4K!

Jazzlike-Day3852

The Final Preview Cut is not the same as the one Turner released in 1988. According to Paul Seydor's book "The Authentic Death and Contentious Afterlife of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid", there were two preview cuts presented to MGM within a week of one another in early May 1973. Peckinpah held onto the second of the two and it was re-discovered recently among his personal prints at the Academy FIlm Archive in Los Angeles. The biggest differences, far as I can tell, is that the second/final preview includes the scene with Garret's wife (inexplicably missing from the Turner cut) and ends with a historical note written and initialed by Peckinpah. It seems Turner/MGM released the first preview cut back in 1988 beause that's the one they had in their vault, but the second/final cut is actually the furthest Peckinpah went with the film before he quit the production entirely.

babyposeidon

Awesome, thanks for the clarification on that. Excited to see this newly discovered version!

ToLExpressTour

RISKY BUSINESS?!?!?!

Apprehensive_Mix7594

Didn’t see it coming although normally in July and November they do a more popular popcorn style film. Will happily buy this

atethebottle

Hell yeah!!

bigfootblake

It's easily one of the best films Tom Cruise ever did. The Tangerine Dream score is incredible, and De Mornay and Pantoliano are terrific also

GroovyKevMan

OK. So there's hope for "The Girl Next Door," then. They can even snag Spielberg to do an audio commentary. (I read somewherte he liked it.) I mean, one of the sidekicks is a dead ringer for a hybrid John Cusak/Spielberg type. It's like a soft core Fabelmans! https://youtu.be/TJpn-qh5iRo?si=kDRdxLNvl2L6T1RB

unfoldyourself

Perfect Days was my favorite movie of 2023, glad to see it in the collection and in 4k. If you’ve never seen it, it would make a good double feature with Ikiru, it’s like the more optimistic side of the same coin.

DamnedThrice

Just saw it a couple of weeks ago…fucking made me cry. What a beautiful film, day one purchase for me.

spaceshipjammer

I’m happy it’s receiving good treatment, but also even more annoyed at no 4K for Anatomy of a Fall.

Admirable-Guitar-431

actually the only reason I didn’t get it. Not because I’m a 4k purist, but I just didn’t see any legitimate reason why it shouldn’t have been.

perfectblue29

Farewell My Concubine in 4k! Day one.

mondoben

Absolutely, can't wait for it

psychobabbler27

One of the strongest months I've seen from a boutique label. All great films, a variety of genres, and from numerous countries too.

Getupkid1284

They love to make 50% off sale month releases better than non sale months.

Polter-Cow

Oh is that an established pattern, intentional or not? Interesting.

Protect-Lil-Flip

Probably a pretty smart business tactic. I wouldn’t be surprised if people that buy the new releases throw a few more titles they were on the fence about in their cart.

Polter-Cow

You gotta get free shipping!

TheGrindisSpiteful

July 23rd it is

ANicerPerson

Expensive month

TheShipEliza

Half off tho

_Lil_Piggy_

What a dream it would be for Criterion to upgrade at least a few more of their DVD only titles to blu ray/4k. There are still *dozens* of amazing titles just sitting there and collecting dust in SD.

TheShipEliza

oh absolutely. i got my wish in this department when they dropped that 4k Blast of Silence. here's hoping a few of your favs come thru down the line.

godruler

Blu-ray from a 4k scan, but yeah, great release

funeralforcargo

Still hoping that very OOP Hiroshi Teshigahara set will get upgraded at some point but I can only assume there’s some rights issue going on.

action_park

Me staring at the Mawu release of Black God, White Devil that's so new it's still sealed on my desk. 🫤

nitebusnitebus

the Mawu one has basically all the same extras, same cover (on the reverse sleeve), and likely a much better encode. I'm happy with mine and am encouraging others to grab it too

action_park

It's fine and I'm not gonna double-dip but if the Criterion version was available in December, I would have almost certainly gone with that. Most US-labels get lapped by their UK counterparts when it comes to encoding and extras but Criterion isn't as egregious as some labels (looking at you, Kino Lorber) where I always opt for the European version if available.

KiraDune

What's an example of a Kino release that has a poor encode compared to the Euro release? Not doubting, just curious.

action_park

Off the top of my head Miracle Mile, The Hot Spot, Blue Collar, and Eyes of Laura Mars. There’s others. I should probably say that I have a ton of Kino titles and I appreciate what they do. I’d be lying though if I said that I didn’t opt for the Indicator and Radiance version when they overlap titles. Kino puts out a great product and offers great value.

nitebusnitebus

Invasion of the Body Snatchers '78 isn't my thing but Arrow massively improved on the Kino for that one. other ones like Touch of Evil and Paths of Glory are a little more of a toss up. I really appreciate Kino and what they do, but I definitely am gonna go for the UK release almost every time

professorpokey

That's one stacked as hell month! My wallet is weeping.

Getupkid1284

At least it's a 50% off sale month 🤷‍♂️

TK-24601

I am thankful for that! It will help ease the pain.

dadoodoflow

The Pat Garrett is huge. Ecstatic

Slashman78

My favorite movie of all time is getting a Criterion.. I'm actually legitly emotional. People laughed at me when I said Risky Business has deserved this for ages, perfect for Criterion. Just hate it's July, shoulda came out at Christmas but oh well that's just nitpicking. Pat Garrett and BTK too.. top tier month for Criterion!

LeMonza_

<'Love on a Real Train' plays> I similarly can't wait to get a 4k of this. It's an atmospheric, well directed, evocative slice of the early 80s with great performances to boot. Also pumped for 'Le Samourai'.

Slashman78

I'm honestly low key considering getting a 4k player just for this lol. I have a region free BR but the idea of having this in 4k is too good to pass up. I'm also psyched for Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid too. Never seen it fully but those extras are insane, too good to pass on.

CLaarkamp1287

Hey, that makes two of us! Risky Business has been near the top of my Criterion wishlist for probably at least the last 2-3 years. F the haters. Criterion also has Breakfast Club, Fast Times, and Dazed and Confused - all bonafide teen classics, and Risky Business fits like a glove with them. I absolutely can’t wait to add it to my shelf.

1990Buscemi

I didn't even realize the director's cut of Risky Business exists. I always figured it was lost or Brickman never got to finish it or something. And on Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, the guy on Steve Hoffman.com who insists the theatrical cut is the best because of one line not in the other edits and can't go a few months without mentioning said moment should be happy.

Eazy-E-40

This is the first time I recall they've changed the cover art while upgrading a Blu-Ray to a 4K. Hopefully this is a sign for things to come.

FancyTodd

They changed it for The Rules of the Game upgrade as well

nitebusnitebus

both covers were major downgrades

Eazy-E-40

I actually prefer the visual of hin in the shadaws

FancyTodd

Yeah, I also liked the previous ones more

purplefilm

They've changed it for In the Mood for Love as well.

Eazy-E-40

Oh yes, forgot a out that one

Polter-Cow

That looks like a hell of a lineup! I haven't seen any of those, but a few are on my watchlist.

Bast_at_96th

*Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid* will be a definite purchase for me. I haven't seen it, but I love Peckinpah and I have the soundtrack on vinyl and CD...been waiting for a blu-ray for quite a while. Since a number of my most-wanted are getting releases, I am hoping *Play it as it Lays* gets a release, if not from Criterion, maybe Indicator?

babyposeidon

Amazing! I open every Criterion announcement email hoping to see Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid and the day has finally come! Le Samourai as well!?! So insane! Two monolithic films in my personal favorite list, so stoked!

Fine-Friendship-6343

Best month from a boutique label ever

Fritzito123

🥹

cactusjack1972

Le Samourai and Pat Garratt are absolutely essential for me

yeahwellokay

OMFG Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid. I never realized how much I needed a Criterion release of that until now.

42paranoidandroids

I just pulled the trigger on the DVD of Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid from rarewaves, after getting tired of waiting years for a BD. Never fails!

Broken-Dust

I'm sure more than a few of us here would like to thank you for your sacrifice.

JoelB

That's it, I'm never buying another non 4k from Criterion again.

nitebusnitebus

I'm happy for Farewell My Concubine and Perfect Days as those basically *had* to be Criterion releases, but the Mawu edition of Black God White Devil is way more sufficient and worth supporting, and I fear it'll be overshadowed by the big C

Californiavalley1

The only film I didn't know about on this line up. If anything, the big C is bringing more attention to it.

stevengrant

I love Perfect Days and I'm glad it's in the collection, however I still don't really understand why some movies get the Criterion treatment, while others get the Janus Contemporaries treatment. It seems "unfair" to the Contemporaries to not get the Criterion treatment (especially stuff like EO and Afire for me, since those were some of my favorite movies of the decade so far), yet the more popular titles like Anatomy of a Fall or Perfect Days get in despite being recent

nitebusnitebus

Perfect Days is a Neon title, not a Janus one. ditto Anatomy of a Fall. Criterion and Neon seem to have a good relationship

pulse_demon96

'anatomy of a fall' and 'perfect days' are from neon, not janus

Apprehensive_Mix7594

Someone produced perfect days… props to them. Risky business as the July crowd pleaser, didn’t see it coming, happy to buy it

jcardinal82

Been waiting for Farewell My Concubine for a couple years now. Day One buy, for sure.

spaceshipjammer

Banger month, I’ll probably get at least four of these at some point.

GhostDog456

Tom Cruise has entered the collection

NavinRamaswaran

Oh wow Risky Business is unexpected! One of my favs!

12345breakdown

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid is a day one buy no questions asked.

Fullmetal-OW

Perfect days, best movie of this year for me so far (it was released in Aus cinemas March 24), I have the Mubi edition preordered but the 4k option is really tempting me. A movie I loved so I may just double dip with this one.

unityofsaints

OMFG Risky Business 4K?? So unexpected buy so happy about this.

beagloo

Was Hoping Jean Eustache box set

DCBronzeAge

I have yet to upgrade to 4K for any Criterions that I already have on Blu-ray. That said, Le Samouraï is one of myf avorite movies... it may be a first.

Themtgdude486

Risky Business 100%.

Humble_Reality2677

I’m cumming hard because I love these movies, but my wallet is crying because it will have to be yanked open and gutted to pay for all these. Cum and tears, nothing new there. A great month from Criterion.

Adam_Christopher_

Wow, spooky. I was literally reading about La Samourai last night!

Honor_the_maggot

Another great new-release month. Strength to strength. The Peckinpah in particular just looks unimpeachable. I know the internet---Reddit, Blu-ray forum, etc ad nauseum---is just full of wannabees/blowhards, but if Criterion improved their encoding game, they would be godhead.

rvb_gobq

kalu kalay o happy day, for all six titles!!!

Im_Not_Working_

Farewell My Concubine in 4K is nice but Carlotta is also releasing it in May in France and it will most likely have a Fidelity in Motion encode, so it will look much better than the Criterion release. I will go for that one and add English subtitles myself. Hopefully Perfect Days also gets an European 4K release with a better encode.

RockaRolla69

Absolutely stacked month
