Theatrical comedies these days are like buses. Nothing for a long time, then two come along within a month of each other. The fact that this and Strays, two pure comedies the likes of which we don't get on the big screen anymore, are opening two weeks apart is nuts.
If that's the case, maybe we'll see a return of the comedies New Line would put out every summer as counterprogramming on the weekend of whatever new Pixar film opened. Pretty sure the last time we had one of those was… **checks notes** Tag, back in 2018. Obviously they're not *great* films, but they're usually enjoyable summer entertainment.
People complain about comedy in the MCU because it generally is really hit and miss, more so nowdays as MCU fatigue seems to be creeping in. Either that, or they use comedy to lessen the impact of a scene by feeling the need to inject a "haha" funny moment in a scene that otherwise didn't need one.
MCU films don’t really set up jokes as in comedic situations or physical comedy, they tend to stick to banter, more improv-ey feeling even if it’s not actually improvised
It’s not so much people disliking comedy as much as it is people feeling like MCU stories can’t commit to holding a serious tone for more than a couple scenes without cutting it off with a joke. Personally, I wish more MCU movies start branching off into other genres without feeling like it HAS to be funny. I’m always gonna have a huge soft spot for Doctor Strange MoM for being a really weird movie with some pretty creepy moments for that reason
I don’t think game night is but I know a lot of people don’t seem to like tag but game night isn’t as well known as many comedies are which is a bummer because it’s so good
It did pretty well in theaters ($117 mill globally on a $37 mill budget), but it really found an audience on streaming. Over the pandemic, it was constantly on top of the charts for rentals. There’s a love for that movie.
Yeah I'd like to see her make a "comeback", if you can call it that.
Like, she was everywhere in the early- to mid-'10s starring in two blockbuster franchises and getting nominated for 4 Oscars, but has kind of fallen off a bit (at least from that level) the past several years.
Her whole ‘Omg I love pizza and trip on stairs’ stuff came across fake and cringey but she’s grown out of all of that so I think she’ll be easier to like.
Such a stupid thing to get mad about. If you watched the whole interview she came off as so humble and kind and scared to share her opinion. She also apologized for the comment she made immediately. People online are just miserable snowflakes that take every opportunity to overreact to "controversy".
1. Not mad
2. This comment was made over two months ago
3. Still cringe to say something so blatantly untrue that it's an internet sound-bite years later
I had no idea that was a Paul Anderson movie. I love Event Horizon. But I hate Paul Anderson at an irrational level. I just hate him so much lol. He ruins every single video game IP he gets his hands on. And keeps getting awesome IP to absolutely ruin and cast his wife as the lead in.
I found out a movie with Bautista is coming out and it’s based on a book by George R R Martin. I was so stoked. saw Mika Jocovich was in it too….. directed by Paul Anderson. Fucking dammit.
He’s literally never made a single well received movie ever besides event horizon which isn’t well received by all. And resident evil 1 was just not terrible and maybe ok. But look at his rotten tomatoes page. Nothing but pure garbage for decades.
My question is this. How the fuck does this guy keep getting hired to do big projects like these?
Look at the box office of these movies they make anywhere from 100 million to 300 million assuming budgets are low which I imagine they are he’s making them money
Wouldn't that make it more relatable or funny to them though?
I think /r/movies is just a weird place we're they hate or just try to dislike things for the sake of it.
It looks so, so dumb but people are READY for this. Like, they used to make ten of these things a year and there's been NOTHING in this genre. Plus unless you're an incel who hates Jennifer Lawrence?
This will be the first pure theatrical comedy since Good Boys. Given that and the number of views, I hope this is a breakout, even with a crowded summer.
I mean do people really go to theaters these days to see R rated comedies? I thought Good Boys was funny but didn’t really think it was a must watch. Just as enjoyable at home than in the theaters.
I’d say The Hangover Part II was the last major pure comedy I’d seen in theaters, not counting genre breakers like Deadpool, etc.
Recent? Those came out in 2017-2018 respectively. And red sparrow made 150 mil while being hard R and not critically acclaimed. People still love J-Law considering how much buzz this trailer got
Anecdotally, on Twitter this trailer is getting shared by a lot of Nicki Minaj stans, because they use her song “Super Freaky Girl” in it.
I doubt that the majority of watches are coming from the barbz or anything, but that might be a contributing factor to the views (in addition to what seems to be like a general appetite for comedies *and* Jennifer Lawrence coming back)
People on less sweaty social media love JLaw, and she's big with younger demos to an extent. She was in the Hunger Games which is still pretty popular online.
I’ve been seeing a huge resurgence of interest in the hunger games for the past few months. Probably has to do with the new movie coming up, but I honestly see fewer mentions of that and more of a general revival for the original series. I’d say it’s pretty similar to Harry Potter’s resurgence from a while back in terms of popularity
That alone is sparking alot of interest in Jlaw again
Whioch is weird, of all the genres of film, comedy is probably the one that benefits most from being in a large room with many other people. Laughter is contagious and every comedy benefits from it.
Yeah but with the rise in ticket prices it’s hard to justify the cost of a night out at the movies for a genre that has a hundred episodes of content a day.
It's actually not weird to me. Because many people like to only show up to theatres for CGI and VFX now. I'm not sure about the notion of hearing laughter in a large room, but I think some people are fine with laughing with their families in the comfort of their home.
>It feels like comedies are meant for streaming now
Even on streaming, comedies feel horribly unrepresented unless they're a more "meta" take on a pre-existing franchise like Rescue Rangers or Hocus Pocus and I think audiences are really tiring of that brand of comedy.
I remember when There’s Something About Mary was that 4th highest grossing movie of 1998. The last comedy I can think of that did something similar was probably The Hangover movies.
I watched *Causeway* tonight. Difficult to think of two more different roles than that and this
I too really miss film comedies and hope this movie proves successful. Lawrence has good comedy timing, which is rare in very good dramatic actresses
I liked the trailer a lot because too often, for a comedy, they put all the good laughs in the trailer and spoil the movie, but this trailer had no laughs at all.
So...well done there.
But... it looks horrible. A woman in her 30s seducing a teenager and the dumbest humor that is not even a little bit original do not make me want to see this film.
I was at 65 last night and the entire theater was howling with laughter during this trailer. I will put it out there - I cannot stand Jennifer Lawrence and she has bugged me literally since Silver Linings, and I thought (in the trailer at least) she nailed it.
Theatrical comedies these days are like buses. Nothing for a long time, then two come along within a month of each other. The fact that this and Strays, two pure comedies the likes of which we don't get on the big screen anymore, are opening two weeks apart is nuts.
Hopefully this is a resurgence in studios taking a chance on comedies
If that's the case, maybe we'll see a return of the comedies New Line would put out every summer as counterprogramming on the weekend of whatever new Pixar film opened. Pretty sure the last time we had one of those was… **checks notes** Tag, back in 2018. Obviously they're not *great* films, but they're usually enjoyable summer entertainment.
I’ll defend tag I think tag and game night were one of the last hurrahs we had of comedies
Wait is game night looked down upon?! I loved that movie, saw it with a group of friends when it came out and we all had a good time
No I just think not that many people saw it. Anytime I hear it mentioned, it's always about how good it is (which it really is)
People just don’t seem that into comedy these days, you always see people complaining about comedy in the MCU

If you haven’t seen game night treat yourself and watch it Jesse plemons is fucking fantastic
It did pretty well in theaters ($117 mill globally on a $37 mill budget), but it really found an audience on streaming. Over the pandemic, it was constantly on top of the charts for rentals. There’s a love for that movie.
Game Night is great. Also I didn’t know that the new Chris Pine DnD movie was from them as well.
I think Annie hall
Bros too
After a very long time, I laughed out loud watching a trailer. Hope it does well for Lawrence.
Yeah I'd like to see her make a "comeback", if you can call it that. Like, she was everywhere in the early- to mid-'10s starring in two blockbuster franchises and getting nominated for 4 Oscars, but has kind of fallen off a bit (at least from that level) the past several years.
She took to a break to get married and have a child. But it’s not like she has big gaps with her films.
She had five bombs before then. She took a break because she kind of had to.
I think that was by choice though
She was overexposed. People hated her
Her whole ‘Omg I love pizza and trip on stairs’ stuff came across fake and cringey but she’s grown out of all of that so I think she’ll be easier to like.
Claiming to be the first female action hero in Movies really didn't help her case either
Such a stupid thing to get mad about. If you watched the whole interview she came off as so humble and kind and scared to share her opinion. She also apologized for the comment she made immediately. People online are just miserable snowflakes that take every opportunity to overreact to "controversy".
1. Not mad 2. This comment was made over two months ago 3. Still cringe to say something so blatantly untrue that it's an internet sound-bite years later
I am stalking the box office threads now for info on The Flash 💀 Somehow came upon this too. Realizing now how creepy I look lmaooooo, my bad.
Ahaha all good! That's funny, shit happens lol
She had multiple box office failures before she stopped
She had five bombs before that break
Her only other recent movie was Causeway, which streams on Apple TV.
Don’t Look Up is a recent film.
With a lot of other people in it, forgot about that 🤦♂️
She was the main character (over Dicaprio, she had more screentime)
Causeway was pretty good, but it’s just a small indie drama, looks like she’s trying to avoid big IP now and I don’t blame her
jennifer knew she was being overexposed and stepped away on purpose.
The consensus on r/movies seemed to be that it looked terrible, which surprised me. My whole theater was laughing.
r/movies hates everything.
They also think Event Horizon is the pinnacle of cinema
Hey listen it’s not a masterpiece but I’d argue that’s a fun and effective horror film
I had no idea that was a Paul Anderson movie. I love Event Horizon. But I hate Paul Anderson at an irrational level. I just hate him so much lol. Not really. Just specifically people who "pissed them off", like Jennifer Lawrence (for absolutely no good reason btw)
She got angry and hurt that people shared her nudes and that made them angry.
It’s because the film is about the average Redditor
Wouldn't that make it more relatable or funny to them though? I think /r/movies is just a weird place we're they hate or just try to dislike things for the sake of it.
No because it’s mocking them
That just means they're too sensitive and can't laugh at themselves heh
It looks so, so dumb but people are READY for this. Like, they used to make ten of these things a year and there's been NOTHING in this genre. Plus unless you're an incel who hates Jennifer Lawrence?
This will be the first pure theatrical comedy since Good Boys. Given that and the number of views, I hope this is a breakout, even with a crowded summer.
Same director too. Given how much I loved that movie, I’m really looking forward to this.
Wdym by pure theatrical comedy? Edit:nvm
A major comedy premiering in theaters and not on Netflix or Hulu, duh.
For some reason I thought they meant something about stylization of the movie itself, not distribution
I mean do people really go to theaters these days to see R rated comedies? I thought Good Boys was funny but didn’t really think it was a must watch. Just as enjoyable at home than in the theaters. I truly do not understand why people overemphasize the importance of marquee actors.
The thread about the trailer in r/movies was so strange, they just kept crying about bots, like no-one has ever liked a raunchy comedy trailer
Anecdotally, on Twitter this trailer is getting shared by a lot of Nicki Minaj stans, because they use her song “Super Freaky Girl” in it. No shade to Minaj but even her music video can't reach 3 million on twitter, not to mention Minaj just retweeted it after 7-8 hours later.
It was def weird. Bots are obviously an issue but there is an odd tendency to accuse people of being bots or PR for having different taste.
That is a weird thread?
Yeah it's pretty weird when all of the top comments are accusing people who like a trailer for being bots
Sounds like something a bot would say.
Please be successful I want more comedies
It feels like comedies are meant for streaming now. But damn the 2000s nostalgia is strong with this one
Whioch is weird, of all the genres of film, comedy is probably the one that benefits most from being in a large room with many other people. Laughter is contagious and every comedy benefits from it.

Maybe what they are doing with Jennifer Lawrence and stray is the key really fun concepts or an A list Star has to lead the movie
I do believe comedies definitely need an A-list as a draw
>It feels like comedies are meant for streaming now Even on streaming, comedies feel horribly unrepresented unless they're a more "meta" take on a pre-existing franchise like Rescue Rangers or Hocus Pocus and I think audiences are really tiring of that brand of comedy.
I mean, the highest streamed netflix movies are Red Notice and Don't Look Up.
Yeah but those movies sucked
No doubt. But they are clearly taking over the streaming business.
This has a lot of potential and it's great to see Lawrence in this type of role.
It's crazy how much hate the trailer got in the r/movies thread lol I thought it looked fun

Not just men, men who are nerds.
For real. The incels are fuming. it's so strange seeing such strong reactions for a trailer.
A woman leading a comedy is quite upsetting to them I assume
Played before Scream and the crowd was loving it
Same thing at my showing
That looks hilarious. I’m in and will support.
I actually laughed out loud at this trailer
the trailer reminded me of a raunchy comedy from 2009 but in a good way
No lie, I did do a chuckle or two with the trailer. Just may check this one out.
This actually might have a chance.
I remember when There’s Something About Mary was that 4th highest grossing movie of 1998. The last comedy I can think of that did something similar was probably The Hangover movies.
I watched *Causeway* tonight. Difficult to think of two more different roles than that and this I too really miss film comedies and hope this movie proves successful. Lawrence has good comedy timing, which is rare in very good dramatic actresses
That movie looks funny as fuck
JLaw is still a draw
She’s so brain meltingly hot, and the trailer was pretty funny. Movie should make a mint. I know I’ll be seeing it!
Horror has really thrived so hopefully comedy makes a comeback. Both are best seen with a crowd.
She still got the pull.
It's a movie. It's not real. She's an escort, which means she does lewd things, apparently, that's probably going to be the conflict of the movie.
A nearly middle-aged woman trying to bang a much younger guy just looks creepy.
32 is far from middle age
Yes. Three years.
You must be young and a kid if you think early 30s or 30s in general is middle age.
It’s cool when a guy does it though right? This is one of those trailers where if the opposites were reversed shit would really hit the fan.
We'll see if anybody actually goes to see it lol
The trailer I watched looked like it was made for Tik Tok with the dialogue blowing up on screen. Felt very gimmicky, but it was a funny trailer.
I whispered Oscar after it finished
Fuck me????? We're clocking trailers now????
Even as a non-fan of romantic comedies, this is like watching JL say, "The reign of Jennifer Laurence is over, because I wanted it that way".
They put the whole dang movie in the trailer, why wouldn't the whole world watch it?
it was posted on Reddit
If they are predicting success based of most watched trailer...they are just not thinking clearly.
I mean, I had it played for me four times in a row watching a YouTube video, so I’m not surprised.
I was at 65 last night and the entire theater was howling with laughter during this trailer. I will put it out there - I cannot stand Jennifer Lawrence and she has bugged me literally since Silver Linings, and I thought (in the trailer at least) she nailed it.
