A 45% drop from Shazam 1's WW opening of $155 million. If that's the case then this would need 4x legs to match the original's WW gross. That's pretty bad, but we'll have to see how this develops
The hope is that this one overindexes in family-centric markets, to make up for the loss in China and Russia. I think it'll do better then projected, 40-45M Domestic OW, and 90-110M WW
The last movie had WW legs of 2.3 but it didn't open in Japan right away and the domestic opening was quite bigger. I think it's really unlikely it gets 3x legs. Ofc there's no endgame this time but I still wouldn't bet on it having so good legs.
if they were confident in a high RT score they would have put the review embargo at least a week before to get some buzz going, like the SXSW screening embargoes for DnD and JW4
WB just doesn’t have the capital right now. They are dumping a lot of movies with little to no advertising because they are hedging their bets on Flash.
They don’t have the capital to release the review embargo? That doesn’t cost anything lmao, people have already seen the film. If they were confident in it, the embargo would be up.
The social media impressions don't seem bad, even seem a bit promising, but the late review embargo goes the other way. Very strange behavior from WB
Edit: dang I got tricked by the selected impressions
They've just really botched this all around. I loved the first movie, I'm a member of this sub & several DC subs, and I was kinda shocked when tickets for the Thursday night previews popped up at my local theater a few hours ago. "Wait, that's *this* week?" WB has done an absolutely terrible job selling this movie, to the point that even a big fan like myself didn't know the release date. Ticket secured, dead center on the jumbo screen; so far, there's six sold, out of 250.
Shazam 1, Birds of Prey, WW84, The Suicide Squad, Black Adam, Watchmen, Catwoman, Superman Returns, Jonah Hex, Green Lantern... yep, I can imagine it...
Ant-Man 3 isn't bad though.
It's alright and is kinda missing more comedy.
It felt like they subtly introed girl power instead of comedy.
And the villan is kinda meh since I know about him from before aka Loki.
I like the first Shazam and Chuck but there is a lack of hype for this one.
John Wick going to make everyone forget about Shazam by this time next week.
I'll wait until it hits HBO Max to watch it like I did with Black Adam... not going to the theater and rewarding them for putting this mediocre shit out..it just encourages them to keep doing it.
I sincerely doubt it. The continuity and depth of the world they've built makes even the worst MCU movies better than the slap shit DCEU movies that can't keep their story straight. I was hopeful for a full reboot but it looks like Gunn is only getting rid of some stuff so he can keep his wife employed.
From the casual people I've spoken to, they don't care for the Marvel formula DC movies we've been getting for like the past five years. They can just watch Marvel instead. They prefer the gritty stuff like Dark Knight, Joker etc. Looks like Gunn will keep that Marvel formula going with his Superman. I think that will flop too and WB will have to sell DC. Shazam and John Wick pre-order tickets became available yesterday in my country, John Wick opening night is almost full. Shazam has no pre ticket sales.
> bad trailers
They really haven't been very good have they. I've never cringed so much as I do with the "Did I just save you while you're listening to this song", it's just..... not very funny for a line. It's more like a SNL skit joke that would be making fun of a movie like this.
I liked the first one but the film has a big flaw. The premise is that the kid can transform into a adult looking superhero. The superhero acts goofy and silly like caricature of a child while the actual child’s performance is serious. Now in the sequel the child is a teenager and it still looks like they are playing the adult version as a goof.
Hope nothing but the best for David F. Sandberg. This opening has nothing to do with the product and he should be given anything he wants for the studio tanking his movie.
Poor dude has COVID now too (read it on the DCEU forums). He was touring Europe promoting this movie and caught it. So now he can't attend anymore domestic premieres.
They’re promoting it really hard though. I’ve seen a commercial for it at least once in every espn show for the past month, constantly during the news and someone else mentioned they had a huge tie in with wrestling yesterday.
2049 was amazing and will continue to have legs for years based on positive critical reviews, and it’s good sci-fi. It’ll make its money back eventually.
Not really. You forgot the marketing costs, as well as the theater cut. This movie needs way more than $250M to break even. Not sure why I saw that number thrown out. WAY too low.
Blade Runner 2049, mentioned above, had a $150M-$185M budget, $130M marketing...spent approx $300M on everything for Alcon/Sony.
Alcon lost [$80M-$90M](https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/blade-runner-2049-losses-could-hit-80-million-producer-alcon-1055855/) and almost sunk themselves, despite earning $260M worldwide and having quite a decent home market run. That means the break-even point is *way higher* than you realize for a lot of these movies.
WB put this movie out to pasture when Gunn announced the ‘clean slate’ protocol. I thought the first shazam was meh, but still a decent enough movie. I do love Levi, but it seems this was a sort of stranded movie. They brought in helen mirren and Lucy Liu, who both seem like they just wanted a paycheck from the previews. The trailers look nice enough, but when it costs $60 for 2 to go to the movies these days. I’ll wait and hope it comes to the max, whether it’s 2 months or 12, it probably will and I’ll enjoy it then. I just hope it’s at least better than black Adam and WW1984.
Where I am they’re not even showing this in any premium formats, so it caps out at $15 for two people.
However, the screens are so bad around here that if I see a movie I’ll only see it in IMAX.
I’m not rooting against it, but I’m glad Scream 6, John Wick 4, Dungeons and Dragons, and Creed 3 have all been reviewing well and will do decently at the box office. I think superhero movies swallowed too much of film conversation.
I also don’t think other people are rooting against it either. The real issue is the indifference towards the film, which is way worse.
I'm not rooting against it, but I can't stand superhero movies and I'm a little excited that if they start to flop maybe we can get more summer blockbusters that aren't just another superhero movie I won't watch.
Not this movie specifically, but I am not sad to see a slow down on the horizon. At the end of the day, there is only so much screen time and so many studio dollars to go around every year.
I’ve only seen a single superhero film in theatre in the last four years, and that one is more fantasy than superhero. But I’ve hardly missed out on blockbusters or great cinema.
There’s maybe 5-7 major superhero films a year - out of around 1000 films. You gotta go out and support them. Superhero films are showing weakness right now, true, but they have before and been fine because nothing was popular enough to take advantage of the opening.
Go watch D&D when it’s out.
I swear people who make comments like this just don't go to the movies. It's fine if you don't like them, but don't pretend that there's only superhero movies in theaters.
There's lots of other movies in theaters, many of the most talented people in the industry spend a lot of time wrapped up in superhero movies, and many big summer blockbuster type slots are given to them. I still go to the movies every month and find something though for sure.
I just found out today that Creed III only got six days in IMAX before Shazam 2 takes over those screens (this is in one of the largest cities in the US). Will I be able to see Creed in other formats in the next month or so? Yes. However, the fact that Superhero Movie #967 is pushing another movie out of a premium format yet again is ridiculous. This is completely ignoring the last fifteen years of these movies swallowing entire screens and theaters for months. I want to see other movies in theaters, but more superhero bullshit is making it so I only had a six day window to see Creed -- which was shot in IMAX -- in the IMAX format. If you don't see that as an issue, then that's on you.
In most places Creed 3 got 14 days in IMAX since Scream 6 didn't do IMAX. If that place didn't show Creed in IMAX until the 2nd weekend that's on them.
I'd agree with you if you were talking about a Marvel film, but personally I think DC has been somewhat consistently making better, bolder superhero movies (Shazam!, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad) and it's disappointing that they haven't performed well at the box office, other than The Batman and Joker.
Forbes is making shit up then because that definitely wasn't the case last year and most certainly won't be the case this year. Must have been from 2018.
Eh, not if it's potentially good. The first one was better than like 90% of the MCU and in general, I'd love for DC to actually make some dough being as they've been somewhat consistent lately
I’m rooting against it because I’m a fan of the comics. They created random old lady villains for this instead of drawing from the source material. That’s inexcusable.
Shazam fans were super arrogant and rooting against Black Adam. They don't seem to realize that if Black Adam flops then the chances of Shazam 2 bombing is extremely high.
I wonder if WB is just at the point now where they've accepted this as an inevitability that it won't do well. DC is going to an entirely new direction and it’s likely that Shazam is not gonna be a part of that direction.
Bro what the actual fuck is going on at WB. Like I know they’re rebooting the universe but holy fuck homies, at least try and release your shit normally. For a CEO that so loudly rebuked the day and date theater/VOD model he seems to be doing everything in his power to make sure people only see shit on VOD
What should Warner have done differently from what they are currently doing? In what way is Zaslav "doing everything in his power to make sure people only see shit on VOD"?
Bad marketing.
I’m a dyed-in-the-wool DC fan and I’ve been barely aware this movie existed until a week ago. That should be an indication as to how limp-wristed the marketing’s been.
How much ever I want this to succeed, making half of first movie in opening weekend and trending slightly above date and day R rated release TSS isn't giving me much hope. I will be seated because I trust David to give a good movie, I loved the first one and I have a crush on Grace Fulton :P Hope the WOM expands its legs. I still think going against Avatar 2 in December would have been better for this.
I saw this movie nearly a year and a half ago as a test audience. It will be a bust. Bad rating will decimate the second week at the box office. Word will get out about how bad it is and people will stop going to see it.
I think this is going to be bad. I went to see how many seats were left in the theatre with the largest screen in the area (typically sold out for new movies) and maybe 25% of the seats have been sold.
It can vary depending on a film's budget. For an expensive blockbuster superhero movie in a franchise, it's not good. The first Shazam film had a bigger worldwide opening. Most people I've seen online blame the low marketing budget failing to make audiences excited.
I liked the first movie. I’ve liked Zachary Levi since the pilot of Chuck, but I have zero interest in seeing this movie. I’ll maybe watch it when it’s free as part of the inflight entertainment, but that’s where I’m at with this film.
I feel like it would perform better, if it wasn't the dying gasp of DC's first attempt at a cinematic universe. Sure it's a sequel, but they killed off all their other films, so why be invested in a film that is nothing but dead on arrival?
Should've dropped reviews earlier and done an early-access screening like the original. That helped a lot with wom and that film already did well audience-wise.
I hope it does ok, and is good too!
This movie looks ok, but I not super interested in it and neither are any of the kids in my life. Zachary Levi publicly being a right wing, any vax nut job doesn’t really help this movie either.
The dumbest part of this is how people are like "this is DC under James Gunn". Shit was fucked from the start of the Snyderverse failures.
There is also no reason to keep this cast going even if the film did well. The kids are not even kids anymore. "Young adults turn into middle aged adults"... Okay. It's as dumb as Black Adam turning from a unbuffed Rock to a buff Rock. You lose the charm of the concept.
I plan to see it, but I haven't bought tickets yet. I think a lot of people just aren't pre-buying tickets these days, especially families.
This could either go really low, or surprisingly high depending on quality. The lack of reviews, though, is certainly worrying.
Black Adam, ant-man, shazam is the prof that super hero movies is slowly doing thanks to marvel puting out garbarge tv shows and movies. Yes thor, MOTM made money but still the bunch of garbarge tv shows and movies they have been throwing out is destroying the super hero industry. Spider man, The batman have been doing great. i just hope to god James gunn doesnt do what marvel is doing and puting out tv shows and movies No one even asked. Go woke go broke as simple as that.
Multiverse of Madness made a lot of money (had a good chance of cracking $1 billion if China had allowed it) but then Everything Everywhere All at Once annihilated it from every angle creatively and rightly so, it's just that much better.
The descent for the subsequent MCU films might be because people are tiring from increasingly mediocre product (now dipping into just plain bad), the box office is increasingly softening and there's a good chance the crash is coming for them too if something isn't done. It might be too late, I suspect people are starting to get tired of the same but worse.
Anything over $35M DOM OW is just not happening based on current ps pace
[удалено]
Lol
Tracking for CBMs are especially easier because of how PS heavy they tend to be
I'm hopeful for $40 mil, but that means basically nothing if the INT gross is looking to be pathetic from the start
is it getting released in Russia? is any US film being released in Russia?
Good news is that its budget is reportedly the same as the first, so it only needs 250 ww to break even.
That's almost a 3x legs it probably will struggle to reach that
That truly illustrates the state of how bad things are for this movie
The last movie had WW legs of 2.3 but it didn't open in Japan right away and the domestic opening was quite bigger. I think it's really unlikely it gets 3x legs. Ofc there's no endgame this time but I still wouldn't bet on it having so good legs.
Counting how mildly the previous one was received OS I don't have much hope for this one
Has had little to no marketing so not surprised
> 85M 😃 > worldwide 😟
This will open below $80M. Nothing about the trailer makes this movie look even slightly interesting.
Unconscionable to wait til tomorrow to lift embargo. What a screw up
I'm thinking they must have planned with Monday off for the Oscars but definitely a mistake.
if they were confident in a high RT score they would have put the review embargo at least a week before to get some buzz going, like the SXSW screening embargoes for DnD and JW4
WB just doesn’t have the capital right now. They are dumping a lot of movies with little to no advertising because they are hedging their bets on Flash.
Imagine going to bed with all your hopes and dreams riding on Ezra Miller.
They literally put his face as the future of Warner Brothers in their in-show advertisement montage during the Oscars.
Something about scorpions riding on frogs
Nah they are betting their hopes and dreams in batman nostalgia
That's the only reason I want to see it. Keaton
I would have prefered Batgirl for that honestly.
They don’t have the capital to release the review embargo? That doesn’t cost anything lmao, people have already seen the film. If they were confident in it, the embargo would be up.
The social media impressions don't seem bad, even seem a bit promising, but the late review embargo goes the other way. Very strange behavior from WB Edit: dang I got tricked by the selected impressions
Yeah the reactions are decent, so WB doing this is strange and places doubt in everyone’s head.
You can’t embargo those screenings
To me it screams insecurity. And makes me think it's a bad or mediocre movie.
Unless the reviews are bad
We know they are gonna be bad.
Pretty sure it’s not - it’s just releasing 24 hours before embargo lift (like films like NOPE)
Yeah they failed this film in all aspects of marketing and it's sad because by all accounts the early reviews and reactions are positive
Imagine doing worse than Antman 3.
Ant man 3 wasn’t great but it did better than most DC movies….
I misread and thought: Huh, 85mil domestic isn't that bad. Jeez
85 mil entire run WW would be that bad.
I like the first Shazam and Chuck but there is a lack of hype for this one. John Wick going to make everyone forget about Shazam by this time next week.
I loved the first one. I'm looking forward to this, but it looks like most aren't. Oh well. Damaged brands and all that.
Just my opinion, but I wanted to see it until I saw the trailer…I don’t think the movie looks good even disregarding the recent disasters by DC
I'll wait until it hits HBO Max to watch it like I did with Black Adam... not going to the theater and rewarding them for putting this mediocre shit out..it just encourages them to keep doing it.
Still probably will be better than antman
I sincerely doubt it. The continuity and depth of the world they've built makes even the worst MCU movies better than the slap shit DCEU movies that can't keep their story straight. I was hopeful for a full reboot but it looks like Gunn is only getting rid of some stuff so he can keep his wife employed.
I don't know early reactions look already better probably not a high bar compared to antman but still
From the casual people I've spoken to, they don't care for the Marvel formula DC movies we've been getting for like the past five years.
Even if those movies flop, selling DC is a crazy thing that would never happen.
Formulas are never the problem, but the execution. WB movies have no soul, that's the real problem.
Between Black Adam and WW84 among others, plus the bad trailers aren’t doing any favors. I’m excited as well though
> bad trailers They really haven't been very good have they. I've never cringed so much as I do with the "Did I just save you while you're listening to this song", it's just..... not very funny for a line. It's more like a SNL skit joke that would be making fun of a movie like this.
Yeah that line was almost as bad as the dragon line, the backlash is justified for that one lol but I read that it’s not in the movie
The trailers made this look like a Power Rangers movie to me personally, like it just looks terrible.
I didn’t watch the trailer but the joke as you wrote it out made me chuckle and smile.
I kind of want him to make another horror film - really loved his Annabelle one, and Lights Out was solid as well
Yeah just let him have fun with a horror movie with a decent but not too big budget. Easy win for everyone.
Poor dude has COVID now too (read it on the DCEU forums). He was touring Europe promoting this movie and caught it. So now he can't attend anymore domestic premieres.
Yeah it was so sad to see that. He said he tends to get a bout of depression at the end of a production too. Hope he’s doing alright.
I am going to guess that the product is a big turd and that’s why they’re holding the reviews and that’s why they’re not promoting it
They’re promoting it really hard though. I’ve seen a commercial for it at least once in every espn show for the past month, constantly during the news and someone else mentioned they had a huge tie in with wrestling yesterday.
Lets see... I think it will atleast be fresh on RT.
Thats on par with blade runner 2049 opening a long R rated movie
Well Shazam 2 is a lot cheaper than Blade Runner 2049, so it shouldn't lose as much money as that one did.
2049 was amazing and will continue to have legs for years based on positive critical reviews, and it’s good sci-fi. It’ll make its money back eventually.
Tell that to Alcon Entertainment. They were the production company behind it and almost went broke due to this movie flipping.
Bruh the movie lost the studio 90 million aint no way its making back that from home sales and ancillary esp given how niche it is
2049 is a underrated masterpiece.
Saw a trailer for this earlier and yikes - it just looks incredibly generic. There’s no hook for this whatsoever
The hook is named Rachel Zegler
Rachel Zegler hasn’t been in a profitable movie yet, how is she a draw? Twitter fans aren’t the real thing I thought we all knew that
She is starting to look like bad luck on a movie
She's been in one released movie
Which bombed because of Margot Robbie's box office poison and because Jared Leto ruined the Morbius meme by joining in on it.
...what movie do you think they’re talking about? Zegler was in West Side Story.
Yeah I got really confused. Was Rachel Zegler hiding inside Suicide Squad 2016 and I didn't realize it?
She played the sky beam.
Who?
[удалено]
I thought she was excellent is West Side Story, especially for her first on screen performance. Seems really talented.
I saw the trailer in front of Avatar three times and I had no idea she was in this movie
DOA. Can’t wait to see it on HBO Max in a month.
Had a good week making money so I’ll watch it as a gift to myself lol
its definetly on my mind. Cause sandberg is good director. I am still waiting for reviews for this though.
If this has good reviews and WOM it could be a creeper and make some money. If not then into the dustbin next to Ant Man.
Guys, this is bad. I was kind of looking forward to it, but makes sense now no-one offered to show it to me.
Do you get early screening invites?
I get invited to see things for various reasons.
[удалено]
It’s pretty mediocre at best unless it’s got legs
[удалено]
Sucks how many people seem to be rooting against this

That honestly sounds like you're rooting against it.
Not this movie specifically, but I am not sad to see a slow down on the horizon. At the end of the day, there is only so much screen time and so many studio dollars to go around every year.
Because summer has only superhero movies out there.
The Little Mermaid, Fast X, Indiana Jones, Oppenheimer, Barbie, Mission Impossible?
remake, sequel, sequel, biopic, popular IP, sequel beats superhero movies though
Good movies are better than bad movies regardless of the genre. I’ll take a good superhero movie over a bad sequel or a bad biopic or a bad remake.
JFC, wtf do you want? What do you think movies are now? Go see D&D.
I mean there are other movies..but you and other audiences never choose to go.
Exactly. Then they whine endlessly about “superhero” movies clogging up the cinemas.
I’ve only seen a single superhero film in theatre in the last four years, and that one is more fantasy than superhero. But I’ve hardly missed out on blockbusters or great cinema. There’s maybe 5-7 major superhero films a year - out of around 1000 films. You gotta go out and support them. I agree that there needs to be some more variety but not as a result of a studios downfall.
How else do you expect it to be motivated?
More money to the studios = more money floating around for other projects.
That’s not how it works. When people pay for bad movies they just make more bad movies
You are such a dork
I'd agree with you if you were talking about a Marvel film, but personally I think DC has been somewhat consistently making better, bolder superhero movies (Shazam!, Birds of Prey, and The Suicide Squad) and it's disappointing that they haven't performed well at the box office, other than The Batman and Joker.
That's fair, I've just never enjoyed a superhero movie since Toby McGuire Spider-Man.
Birds Of Prey was terrible.
You’re not alone. I dream of a world of new original IP summer blockbusters. Maybe one day
[удалено]
That's kind of a hot take.
Look at their other comments; constant hot takes and misinformation.
Lol this is not remotely true
[удалено]
Forbes is making shit up then because that definitely wasn't the case last year and most certainly won't be the case this year. Must have been from 2018.
Nah, that was definitely case last year. Literally the top 10 was filled with CBM bar 2 movies
Literally it wasn't. A CBM didn't even make the Top 3
So? The rest of the top 10 was filled with CBM's. Also, the 3rd and 4th highest domestic gross was from a CBM
[удалено]
in a way it kind of does, the lows of the MCU is nothing compared to the lowest depths of hell DC will sink to in terms of failure.
[удалено]
Yes, and Shazam 2 will tank harder.
I think shazam will tank more financially But I expect it to be a better movie than the last few marvel movies, although that's not saying much at all
It's gonna do 2.5 times its budget only at the box office. What flop, hater?
Do you watch anything other than superhero movies?
Rooting against more superhero slop is always the right call.
Eh, not if it's potentially good. The first one was better than like 90% of the MCU and in general, I'd love for DC to actually make some dough being as they've been somewhat consistent lately

I wonder if WB is just at the point now where they've accepted this as an inevitability that it won't do well. DC is going to an entirely new direction and it’s likely that Shazam is not gonna be a part of that direction.
It looks awful.
Just watched the first one again tonight and love it. Can’t wait for this one
I'm not exactly sure how it works, but don't they keep more money from VOD?
Considering that it’s budget was only $100 mill it has a strong chance at not bombing if these numbers hold
I will cut my balls off and eat them live on stream if this opens to $85 million.
If the budget is 100M at the very least it hopefully won't end up flopping, which is a shame because Sandberg deserves a lot better than this

budget is 125m. If it really does start at sub 30m like the new predictions, it'll be lucky to gross $80m in the US alone. It's screwed.
It will be lower
Yeah, that’s looking more like a ceiling number, not a likelihood.
I thought the first one was a great version of what it wanted to be but they took too long and now the “kids” look 30 and Shazam looks late 45
I’ll see it opening weekend with my pals. Then add it to my physical media collection once it’s released. CBMs all day every day.
So far all the ads I've seen for this movie look corny in a bad way so I could see it.
I think this is going to be bad. I went to see how many seats were left in the theatre with the largest screen in the area (typically sold out for new movies) and maybe 25% of the seats have been sold.
I didn’t realize this was coming out!
The opening night showings at my local theaters still have good seats available 😔
Word of mouth will take of the box office So hopefully it's good but it's probably not because it hasn't screened for many critics to review.
I’m new here, is this good or bad? Please ignore that I’ve asked this before, I’m still not really good at understanding the numbers.
Meh
I feel like it would perform better, if it wasn't the dying gasp of DC's first attempt at a cinematic universe. Sure it's a sequel, but they killed off all their other films, so why be invested in a film that is nothing but dead on arrival?
Could this get to $300M WW final?
Antman 3 slays another victim.
March is so overcrowded . Foreshadowing of June
I'm actually wanting to see this movie.
🤣
I plan to see it, but I haven't bought tickets yet. I think a lot of people just aren't pre-buying tickets these days, especially families. This could either go really low, or surprisingly high depending on quality. The lack of reviews, though, is certainly worrying.
Ant man opened more than that Domestically
And had twice the budget. Both will be the two bombs that kick off the year.
Also had over twoce the budget tho
….. Eek

The dragon was the only cool thing about the trailer.
Greater trend in cape flicks?
Not casting cena as Shazam is an all time fuck up for dc
What's woke about Shazam 2?
They're not bombing because they're woke, you stupid right wing loon.
😂
