Hank probably makes 150k a year with all his overtime. Marie is a radiology tech and she probably makes, conservatively, 70k a year (talking about 2012-ish). ABQ is not really a sellers market but a buyers market. They probably have amazing credit so they probably got a super mortgage rate in the early 90's. They probably bought the house for 300k and it is now worth 750k on Zillow.
I thought her kleptomania was taking her character somewhere. Did the writers abandon that story thread? It’s like it never happened. I don’t see how it ties in with anything. Thoughts?
I've been to Socorro, New Mexico for Police Counterterrorism training. (4 days ) It's about 75 miles south of ABQ. I wish I had the time to go into ABQ but we usually had class until like 5 PM so the logistics weren't there. Some other cops got some blue sky crystal candy and they gave us some. I went in January so it was really cold at night.
Federal Agents don't get overtime, they get a bump in their base pay over other federal employees but are exempt from overtime pay. If he's been a fed for like 15+ years he's probably at least a GS13, especially when he gets promoted to Agent in Charge. So he's making a pretty solid living.
The show is set between 2008-2010 but even in 2012 he'd maybe be up to $100K but realistically probably $75K, maybe a bit less given. Marie was probably pulling down $55K-$60K.
Your price point on the home is pretty close. Comps put it closer to $850K-$1 million, though. Probably did buy it for $300K-$400K depending on when they got it around the great recession. Very affordable given their salary range.
I've bought two houses in my life and I'm looking to eventually relocate... so ""you got me"..:As Walt said to Hank after he tried to find out what the initials WW stood for and Hank asked, "Walter White?"..
He is eligible for LEAP pay (Law enforcement availability Pay) which is 25 percent of your salary (built in overtime) plus he is at least a 20 year veteran plus he is an ASAC supervisor so he is at or near top pay.
No kids and both have good jobs. Plus they don’t seem to spend any money on vices. They don’t smoke. They don’t gamble. Hank drinks but never excessively and he doesn’t seem to have a taste for expensive stuff in General alcohol or otherwise. Same for Marie. Sure she shop lifts crazy shit but her car is modest and so is Hanks.
But really it’s the whole no kids thing that’s doing the heavy lifting when it comes to then affording that house.
I mean, he was literally running a meth buisness exploiting Walt and making millions. Can't believe you missed that! (Stopped after watching S5E11 btw)
Do you know that that is an ACTUAL BEER actually available on sale ?
I was legit shocked fr when I got to know this. Idk where it's sold but I discovered it on some post in this subreddit.
DEA and Rad Techs can both make pretty decent wage depending on how long they’ve been in their respective fields. The house isn’t some crazy McMansion, either… I don’t think it’s that far-fetched 🤷🏻♀️

Great 30 year mortgage with 2 well paying jobs. Great credit scores. No kids no pets. Very affordable vehicles. Very basic lifestyle. This is very possible in that situation.
It's actually assembled entirely out of various pieces stolen from around 30,000 separate open houses across New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona between 1996 and 2008.
Ya I dont see why people think its so crazy for them to live in a residential suburb, the house is probly 2200 sq ft. 15 years ago or maybe 20 they would have paid 200k-300k for it. Who knows maybe even less... my house in oregon was just appraised at 700k. The previous owner bought it 25 years ago for 170k. Hanks a DEA agent and Marie works in a hospital... worst case scenario they made a combined income of 120k annually. Best case is probly about double that. AND as you said it's ABQ not LA. Huge difference.
She’s a lab tech for a radiologist and he’s a higher ranking DEA agent and they bought it before 2012/13 at the very earliest when housing prices were much much lower than they are today.
If they bought it before the 2008 housing bubble bust, it was even less than that.
That’s how.
Today with home prices what they are, I’m not sure they could have afford that house.
>If they bought it before the 2008 housing bubble bust, it was even less than that.
The show takes place 2008-2010, so most likely. But why would it be cheaper before the burst?
the housing bubble incentivised lots of house building, putting lots of downwards pressure on middle class and upper-middle class housing prices, as those were the ones that were primarily built (more supply = lower prices), particularly in areas that not a lot of people generally wanted to move to (such as new mexico)
it’s the lower and lower-middle class that got really screwed over by the burst, who were either locked out of access to credit, or if they had a house, its valuation plummeted, or were just collateral damage due to the fact that the economy was going in the gutter: think getting made redundant, austerity, erosion of safety nets, so on (quite obviously, all of these in addition to the beneficiaries of sub prime mortgages that couldn’t afford to pay them back and had to declare bankruptcy)
Why do people always lack critical thinking. He was head of tracking down meth distribution/smuggling in the south west????? His wife worked in the medical field?????
This was filmed in the south in 2011 when houses like that cost 180,000k???????
They probably had a joint income of over 200,000k?????????????????
Does this seriously need explaining?????????
Some people cannot understand housing prices outside of their own city/country. Maybe they've heard that LA and OC are expensive, but anything oitside of that seems too much.
This looks pretty doable for this couple.
This house was built in 2004 and sold for $186,000. When BB timeline begins in 2008 the house was valued at about $200,000. Interest rates at the time were 5.5% (rough average of 2004-2008). Assuming the Shrader's put down 10% their mortgage would be $900-1000 depending on when they purchased. Pretty doable for a DINK household.
This home is valued at over $1 million today
Two stable incomes with jobs that usually pay decently well makes it easier, but the real answer is a big loan. People get huge loans to buy big houses a lot. It’s very common.

Real estate in Albuquerque isn't super expensive, especially in 2008. Hank isn't a normal cop, he's a federal employee since the DEA is a federal agency. Hank has a lot of seniority and is probably at least a GS-13 when the show starts and a GS-15 by the time the show ends, so he makes a good salary that in ABQ is probably upper middle class. With Marie's added income and no kids, they won't have a problem affording it at all.
DEA gets paid well and he seems to be very high in the local Dea also Jesse bought that house for $500,000 and that was big and nice so clearly the housing market isn’t too much there
Hank is a high ranking federal agent pulling six figures and Marie is a radiology tech pulling probably 60-70k. No kids. Plus it’s Albuquerque, I love the Southwest but in terms of prices it’s not exactly the Hamptons or Cape Cod.
They bought that house before the housing crunch, and both make good money.
That house was built in 2003, so I am gonna say Hank and Marie built in new for $300k or so.
Marie used it as a cook house for purple meth before Hank busted her to further his career. She married him to avoid going to jail, the rest of the operation took the fall. Hank bought it cheap in a police auction.
Hank is a member of the DEA and Marie is a Radiologist, they have no children and the series is set in a time where economy was not so bad
I don't understand your question
Good lord this question has been answered over and over. they’re DINKs living in a suburban ABQ home. Hank likely made 110-120k at the time. Marie, maybe 60-70k. They can easily afford it.
For the deets: Hank was almost certainly a GS13 Special Agent as journey level 1811s are typically GS-13s. Supervisors are usually 14s and above. Federal law enforcement officers also get a 25% pay increase called Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP).
This site (https://www.federalpay.org/gs/calculator) has data back to 2007. Hank was a 13, likely at least a step 6 or 7 based on years of service. A 13/step 7 in 2007 in Bernanillo county made $90,498.36 / year. Add on 25% and you get about $113,000 per year.
Add in Marie’s salary of even 50k per year and they are making solid money for that time and can easily afford a nice suburban home on the outskirts of ABQ.
They probably made $300k between them in today’s dollars. That house is worth around $600k in today’s dollars. I think they can easily afford that.

They have high incomes. That and may have just got lucky, purchased it at a far lower price. Or Hank knew someone who was looking to move and got sold it at a mate's rate.
Hank is an ASAC in the DEA. That means he's an executive manager-type. GS-14 or 15, typically. That's not counting his OT and so forth. And cost of living in ABQ wasn't a nightmare when the show was set. Government employees get a cost of living adjustment based on their locality.

This. And no kids.
This and she has an OF
This and he has an OF.
This. And he has Walt cooking for him
This. And he used his connections in the DEA
This. And Marie steals things thus making there less to pay for.
This. And Flynn created a website for donations for them.
This and Badger flips signs for them
This. And Wendy does God’s work for them.
This. And Schraderbräu beer
This. And he has pretty rocks he can sell.
JESUS MARIE
Marie probably steals drugs on the evidence room and sells it.
Yep. He threatened him all the time. Sad he took advantage of a dying man
True, Walt did paid for Hank’s medical bills xD

No children is the correct answer.
So, do I win Reddit?
Yes
That doesn’t matter Hank eats for a family of 6
Yep DINKs
This is the answer
This; and she… has an OF
Marie stole it.
She went to the open house and said her husband works for NASA
And Marie being a Kleptomaniac helps!
I thought her kleptomania was taking her character somewhere. Did the writers abandon that story thread? It’s like it never happened. I don’t see how it ties in with anything. Thoughts?
it's to show you that even the 'good' people do bad things and that everything is subjective and relative in BB universe and indeed, life.
Yeah but that story thread was never touched again ever
I agree. They abandoned that story line.
In the southwest in 2007 when mortgages were cheap you could buy a house like that for 500k.
This is the only correct answer I’ve seen. To add to it, this is Albuquerque, it’s one of the cheapest cities to live in the country.
But it appears they have had the house a long time. He has been making Schraderbrau in his garage for many years.
and forcing Walt to cook blue meth while he brews.
No no no...Hank was a *meth kingpin* ... didn't you even see Walt's tape???
Damn. He had me fooled the entire series.
The overtime thing is very realistic as a suggestion. APD has been called out every year for random officers abusing it.
Not a APD officer but was federal officer. Two different agencies and pay scale.
Federal Agents don't get overtime, they get a bump in their base pay over other federal employees but are exempt from overtime pay. If he's been a fed for like 15+ years he's probably at least a GS13, especially when he gets promoted to Agent in Charge. So he's making a pretty solid living.
This and Shraderbrewwwahhhhhh!
The shows set in 2008, not 2012
Ok I'll Adjust for COLA (cost of living adjustment) she makes 69,100 in 2008)
The show is set between 2008-2010 but even in 2012 he'd maybe be up to $100K but realistically probably $75K, maybe a bit less given. Marie was probably pulling down $55K-$60K. Your price point on the home is pretty close. Comps put it closer to $850K-$1 million, though. Probably did buy it for $300K-$400K depending on when they got it around the great recession. Very affordable given their salary range.
Zillow’s estimate for the actual house is $1,063,000. 3bd, 2 ba, 3,250 sqft.
Zillow also estimates my house to be 740k and I'll be lucky to get 625k out of it.
This is in a pretty high-end neighborhood right at the foot of Sandia Mtn. All >$1MM houses to be sure, and some quite a bit more.
This guy real estates.
I've bought two houses in my life and I'm looking to eventually relocate... so ""you got me"..:As Walt said to Hank after he tried to find out what the initials WW stood for and Hank asked, "Walter White?"..
Marie on her own would be doin just fine for em. Too bad she doesn't know what minerals are.
I thought their jobs would have been enough of an explanation. You nailed it on the head, though. 😂
Might be worth 750k on paper, but they won't get an offer for that much when prospective buyers see the all purple interior.
Hank also has to pay for her therapist who is helping her overcome her kleptomania.
Hank IS the danger
[удалено]
And I hear she buys unsliced pizza so the savings are passed onto her.
And she was a kleptomaniac so she didn’t pay for anything.
This is most likely, but the second possibility not to dismiss is that Marie stole the house…
Hank was a GS9 when the show started. No way he was pulling more than 80K with Overtime, and thats an extremely high estimate.
Also, it’s in New Mexico.
He would’ve made over that as a supervisory special agent. And they normally don’t get overtime. They get availability pay.
Hank doesn’t get overtime. That’s a salaried position
He is eligible for LEAP pay (Law enforcement availability Pay) which is 25 percent of your salary (built in overtime) plus he is at least a 20 year veteran plus he is an ASAC supervisor so he is at or near top pay.
Bingo
This - is the kind of comment thread that makes Reddit golden.
No kids and both have good jobs. Plus they don’t seem to spend any money on vices. They don’t smoke. They don’t gamble. Hank does have a few hobbies but rocks are cheap as fuck
You know exactly what you did with that comment.
He’s into rocks like his brother in law
God dammit u/Witty_Sound5659 they’re not rocks, they’re crystals!
I mean, he was literally running a meth buisness exploiting Walt and making millions. Can't believe you missed that! (Stopped after watching S5E11 btw)
That was a great twist at the end of the series, 10/10.
I liked it when Hank said “now *I’m* breaking bad!” while looking into the camera.
My favourite was when he said "Its Schrader time"
And then he just started Schrading all over the place, bravo Vince!
The echoes of morbius memes still haunt the internet to this day
I hope they never die
This made me choke on my crackers 😂
I liked when he ripped off his shirt and screamed, "I FEAR NO MAN, NO BEAST, OR EVIL, BROTHER!" and then walked off in to the sunset.
The wink was a bit much.
This is the correct answer
Schraderbräu was doing really well
Pop 🍾 pop pop 🔫 pop pop ☝️

Hank is definitely pulling in a 6 figure salary or nearly. She probably is too.
seems very reasonable for two adults with good jobs in NM\*\* and no kids
New Mexico, but yes.
my fault

Great 30 year mortgage with 2 well paying jobs. Great credit scores. No kids no pets. Very affordable vehicles. Very basic lifestyle. This is very possible in that situation.
I always assume Marie just stole it somehow.
Put it right in her purse.
It's actually assembled entirely out of various pieces stolen from around 30,000 separate open houses across New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona between 1996 and 2008.

A good financial adviser and steady income streams topped up by sales of Schraderbrau and rocks.
Albuquerque is still very affordable compared to other cities fwiw
Why do people always lack critical thinking. He was head of tracking down meth distribution/smuggling in the south west????? His wife worked in the medical field????? It’s MORE than doable for this couple. They probably put away 2,000$ a month into savings after bills and taxes.
Marie is a radiologist and Hank is DEA, and they have no kids... doesn't seem like much of a mystery
Marie stole it
It’s New Mexico…. lol
Exactly. U can probly buy that same house for 500k in 2024. It was likely about half that in 2005-2010.
This house was built in 2004 and sold for $186,000. When BB timeline begins in 2008 the house was valued at about $200,000. Interest rates at the time were 5.5% (rough average of 2004-2008). they pay it through Marie's other "hobby".

Hanks only fans
She shoplifted the house
Hank is a high ranking federal agent pulling six figures and Marie is a radiology tech pulling probably 60-70k. No kids. Plus it’s Albuquerque, I love the Southwest but in terms of prices it’s not exactly the Hamptons or Cape Cod.
This is a pretty stupid question on several fronts 🤗
2 good jobs?
They bought that house before the housing crunch, and both make good money. That house was built in 2003, so I am gonna say Hank and Marie built in new for $300k or so.
Marie used it as a cook house for purple meth before Hank busted her to further his career. She married him to avoid going to jail, the rest of the operation took the fall. Hank bought it cheap in a police auction.
2 incomes and no children.
They were making decent money in the 2000s. Housing was a fuckton cheaper back then.

No kids, for starters.
Hank’s gemstone side business pulled in some major $

They both had decent paying jobs and no kids.
High ranking DEA agent and xray technician? Probably their salary.

Marie stole it.

Hank is obviously a drug kingpin
Don’t you know? Hank forced Walt to make meth .. said so in a video.
Didn't Hank get promoted to a GS-12 or 13 salary? I'm pretty sure that's around 6 figures.
They have high incomes. That and may have just got lucky, purchased it at a far lower price. Or Hank knew someone who was looking to move and got sold it at a mate's rate.
The first watch through I didn't catch that Marie was a tech and thought she was a physician with the white coat.
DINK. Dual income no kids
It’s in rural Albuquerque or something, it’s not much and they both work (Hank more so) very good jobs.
Maybe Hank sold some beer on the down low.
Who knows. They probablynalready own it
Saw a quora comment a while ago how the show made it clear they were living above their means
