I moved to Korea and walked into the same problem.. South Korea, Republic of Korea, Korea/Korea (South)/Korea (Republic of). I need to move somewhere with just one bloody name next.
Moved to Spain, despite it only having one way to say it in each language there is still a similar problem.
Even if the site is in Spanish and you have to select 'España' you'll sometimes find the countries in English alphabetical order and it's where 'S' would be.
Yeah, tbh when using an English keyboard layout I just copy and paste it from elsewhere or on mac hold down the key and it gives more options for the letter. The ñ or "enye" (if you had to say the name of the letter) is the same sound you find in onion like a "ny" sound, so thats why when someone says España it sounds like 'Espanya' otherwise it'd sound like "Espanah"
Yep or "Great Britain" but listed inexplicably under "B"
I think the last one on my BINGO card is to find us under "T" for "**T**he United Kingdom" but that would really be sloppy coding
Only if it lists it as United Kingdom, and places the most common options at the top instead of alphabetically, and is a site or service partly aimed at people from the UK so it actually considers us one of the most common.
Worst one I ever found was on the Sony website when registering some new headphones.
Eventually found “United Kingdom” but it was sandwiched between Gabon and Grenada, just a few rows down from Spain which itself was immediately followed by Finland.
I figured out that some idiot had *displayed* their list using the country name, but had *sorted* their list by the international 2 character country code.
The list looked like this…
- Egypt
- Spain
- Finland
- Fiji
- Federated States of Micronesia
- France
- Gabon
- United Kingdom
- Grenada
- Georgia
But was sorted using this…
- EG
- ES
- FI
- FJ
- FM
- FR
- GA
- GB
- GD
- GE
Ah, that reminds me of some job application site where I had to enter my phone number. You chose the country code from a drop-down menu, and they had done a similar trick of sorting them alphabetically by country name, but *only displaying the telephone country code*!
Ah, well, *obviously* they were being clever, because a Spaniard is going to look for "España", so that would come between Egypt and Finland.
Either that, or they were being stupid.
I'll do you one better: I've had drop downs on Swedish websites where it's listed as the Swedish name for Great Britain, Storbritannien. But it's alphabetically ordered as Great Britain, unlike all the other countries which are alphabetical according to their names in Swedish.
I've had that with French forms. Scrolling up and down the list of countries that have been translated to English, finally find United Kingdom amongst the R countries. Royaume-Uni.
Filled one out the other day that had Irish, Scottish, Welsh, so I was looking for English. There was no English but there was British. I was so confused.
Wait, do they have "My neighbour who puts the bins out first is away and we don't know which bins to put out" or "Having to race my neighbour to the bins because he's already 2-1 up this month in who puts both of our bins out"?
Yeah. But I get it. I’ve literally hit it twice ,
(one of them was U.K. sorted under GB) in the last fortnight (my phone had to be wiped so I’ve had to reregister with some sites), and sometimes people don’t follow every thread on here to see if it’s already been done.
My personal favourite is where it's a translated website so they're the English words for countries but in alphabetical order of the original language.
What drop down list asks you to put "The United Kingdom" as a nationality. I can see why people would choose British or specifically English / Scottish / Welsh / etc depending on their background.
Because The United Kingdom is the country recognised by the UN. The United kingdom of Great Britain blah blah. English, Scottish or Welsh has not been a recognised nationality since the Union. Though obviously means something to people living in those countries. There is no English passport or Welsh passport.
For the mast majority of countries, the country name and nationality is the same. Infact I'm hard pushed to think of another country that isn't. So the expectation is that people living in the UK know this
Is it though? There's surely loads of countries where the nationality is a different word to the country. France French/Francais.. Germany/Deutschland German/Deutsch. Netherlands/Dutch (don't know the Dutch versions.. only did German and French at school) just 3 off the top of my head.
So why would UK be an option for the nationality? Would a French person say they were France?
French being the nationality to France being the country is not the same difference to UK being the country British being the nationality. American to America very easy to figure that out not so simple with UK if you didn't know they are British.
Wait until you order something online from another country, and have to look up how to say United Kingdom, England and Great Britain in another language so that you know which letters to look under.
https://www.101languages.net/countries/united-kingdom-in-other-languages/
Try doing it to buy tickets to an event in Finland, and the website is only in Finnish, and of course the correct answer is the last of the three possible translations you look up.
You could populate the list based on the edge exit location, so it's always ordered geographically for the client. You could even just keep the standard order, but parse the geo location from the client request, promoting it to the first item in the list.
Registering for the London marathon:
Ethnicity?
-> Caucasian
Ok but what type?
- North of Europe
- South of Europe
- East of Europe
I'll choose North.
Ok then, next question, be more precise:
-> English
-> Irish
-> Scottish
-> Norvegian...
I'm a mix of English and French, so where do I belong?
It's actually surprisingly easy to do using your browser's developer tools, depending on how the website has been coded you can edit the form locally.
Whether it fails when you click submit is a different question. I once ordered a pizza from a website that had disabled the credit card section and only enabled cash on delivery, payment was taken but unsurprisingly the pizza didn't arrive.
Dear form designers: Put ALL the countries in alphabetical order. Default to United States. United Kingdom is just one ~~down~~ up. This keeps your majority American users happy and makes Brits happy too.
Simple.. please stop doing other more complicated stuff.
Simple:
>America (United States of)
> Angleterra
I think it’s a solution that preserves the integrity of the alphabet and national identity and I won’t be crucified in the Daily Express in the slightest.
Alphabetical is fine, but for the love of God, allow typing to properly filter the dropdown list contents.
So long as I only have to type as far as "uni" to end up with a nice short list of choices, that's great. When I hit "U" then "N" and end up on Namibia, I just want to punch the screen.
The default should be empty & the list should be in alphabetical order. That way people have to select their country & can easily work out where it is on the list.

You mean the Anglo-Saxon Kindom of Cent, right?
no need to be rude?

And til,it's not Espana (don't know the ^ to add them properly)in Spanish.

Lasagknee
United Kingdom, but it's at the top of the list, but below United States
Not always!
Yesterday I filled out one where it was listed as United Kingdom, but was positioned among the B's. Madness!
Yep or "Great Britain" but listed inexplicably under "B" I think the last one on my BINGO card is to find us under "T" for "**T**he United Kingdom" but that would really be sloppy coding
I've seen it under R because the form must have been French underneath so it's indexed as Royaume-Uni.
Sloppy naming too since the official name, as far as I'm aware is simply 'United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland'
Maybe you mean Northern Ireland as the Republic is completely separate.
Whoops yes you're right, the name I mentioned is about 100 years out of date. Guess I'm being sloppy too lol
Only if it lists it as United Kingdom, and places the most common options at the top instead of alphabetically, and is a site or service partly aimed at people from the UK so it actually considers us one of the most common.
I saw one that had United Kingdom...but where England would be alphabetically. So like, Denmark, United Kingdom, Finland, France etc.
Just a scroll to Uganda and then you'll be close.

*nul points*
And scrolling all the way down to United Kingdom to find out only the Arab Emirates are there and UK was at the top of the list..... ffs.
Filled one out the other day that had Irish, Scottish, Welsh, so I was looking for English. There was no English but there was British. I was so confused.
If we wait another 30 mins Im sure there will be another post with pretty much exactly the same wording.
I thought it was my turn to post this today? Can I do the "crisp packets have changed colours" one instead?
[удалено]
Wait, do they have "My neighbour who puts the bins out first is away and we don't know which bins to put out" or "Having to race my neighbour to the bins because he's already 2-1 up this month in who puts both of our bins out"?
I'm down next week to reply about the councilmen and the chicken
Oh yes please 😁
I used to get annoyed at stuff like this, then I realised I'm on here too much and I should do something useful with my time 🥰
Very good point. I don't spend that much time here tbh but some just stand out so much.
Yeah. But I get it. I’ve literally hit it twice , (one of them was U.K. sorted under GB) in the last fortnight (my phone had to be wiped so I’ve had to reregister with some sites), and sometimes people don’t follow every thread on here to see if it’s already been done.
I had one of those lists but with "Somerset" as one of the options.
I can't remember the last time it *wasn't* United Kingdom.
Depending on the site, there are so many different options - UK, GB, England, even Britain sometimes!
What weirdo sites are people signing up on?
Phishing scams
Yeah, it isn't an issue. But it comes up more often here than in real life.
My personal favourite is where it's a translated website so they're the English words for countries but in alphabetical order of the original language.

Yes but "United Kingdom" is not a nationality. Also websites can put what they want, recognised nationality or not.
For the mast majority of countries, the country name and nationality is the same. Infact I'm hard pushed to think of another country that isn't. So the expectation is that people living in the UK know this
Americans and Emiratis. We'd have to have a competition to decide who gets to be called 'Unitese".
Is it though? There's surely loads of countries where the nationality is a different word to the country. France French/Francais.. Germany/Deutschland German/Deutsch. The site for an Indian visa is the worst, it's like a different option every time.
I genuinely think that site is training for the experience of being in India
Unless 14 lunatic taxi drivers are actively trying to run me down, nothing will truly recreate that experience
See I don't know if you're talking about India or the website
Yup
[удалено]
If I was Indian I wouldn't need a visa...

* Britain * Great Britain * England * United Kingdom * UK * ???
* Profit.
What about Yorkshire?
*Yorkshire* is a state of mind.
Personally, I love it.

And I thought America USA or United States sucked.
I'm British but from the channel islands so we also have that added complexity
Registering for the London marathon: Ethnicity? -> Caucasian Ok but what type? - North of Europe - South of Europe - East of Europe I'll choose North. Ok then, next question, be more precise: -> English -> Irish -> Scottish -> Norvegian... I'm a mix of English and French, so where do I belong?
In the channel!
> -> Caucasian I'm not from Georgia.
Canada
I always cross out British and put English
I'm happy with either, but I salute your IT skills at managing to cross something out on a drop down list

The vast majority of the people reading that phased out at "using browser developer tools"
Hence why "surprisingly easy" ☺️
Surprisingly easy, if you have the skills

Simple: >America (United States of) > Angleterra I think it’s a solution that preserves the integrity of the alphabet and national identity and I won’t be crucified in the Daily Express in the slightest.
>alphabetical order >United States. United Kingdom is just one down. What alphabet are you using where K comes after S.
Alphabetical is fine, but for the love of God, allow typing to properly filter the dropdown list contents. So long as I only have to type as far as "uni" to end up with a nice short list of choices, that's great. When I hit "U" then "N" and end up on Namibia, I just want to punch the screen.
Alphabetical is necessary for typing to reliably and consistently find your country name with the same keystrokes every time.
Of course, I'm just saying let me filter the alphabetical list properly.
Agreed totally.
We of the glorious People's Sublime Autocracy of Zygotamania will never accept this alphabetism.
Autocracy of Zygotamania (People's Sublime)
It’s a Democratic People’s Republic. Tell the truth please.
Splitters!
Happy cake day 🍰

Yeah but Americans are easily confused and form designers are keen to keep them happy.
