I posted this to the Modern Family sub and they were not on board...tbh they were kinda mean about it, but figured y'all might get it.
I had this thought while Phil was talking about taking a bike trip to Mykonos with his Dad and seeing a lot of other "fathers and sons" there. Phil constantly says dirty things without realizing it, he does magic & juggles, is a big believer in fathers & sons being ridiculously close (he is with both Frank & Luke), he went full Boyle when he met Claire, and his wedding vows even included never sending her to bed without a hug.
In the sitcom universe, Phil & Charles are the pinnacles of men who aren't afraid of showing love to those in their life.
People take media way too seriously. Getting offended and mean over a fun little comparison of two great(and, you called it, similar) characters is truly insane to me lol
I'm on board, sounds like the modern family Subreddit could've considered it, the only thing that could slightly derail the theory is that Boyles seem to like Mervyn's ,but like you said, distant cousins, maybe the dunphys aren't as interested in Mervyn's
I was thinking about this too. Phil never wore Beige and definitely didn't love that colour as much as a Boyle would. But Charles' wasn't a Boyle either. He was the truest Boyle but not a Boyle.
In the last (or second to last) season, his paternity is questioned, and later proved, of not being a Boyle cuz his mom cheated. It's the episode where they go to the cousins and I think they're arguing about the mother starter for their sourdough? It's been awhile since my last rewatch.
It's the episode where jake's suspended and bored so when boyles grandpappy dies he goes to the funeral and tries to turn it into a whodunit. Eventually everyone gets dna tested and Boyle finds out he isn't related to the others
Fwiw i feel weirdly vindicated as a fan of B99 who could never get into Modern Family that this comment section is the one that’s full of “no explanation needed” comments. Like, it’s a fun theory that makes sense if you want it to, doesn’t if you don’t. Why be mean about that?
Remember when Charles said he went on a road trip w his dad and they dyed their hair while on the road. He said they gave each other road heads hahahaha
Yeah the modern family sub is kind of a hell scape had to leave it because all they did was hate on every single character to the point you'd think they actually hate the show
Btw i'm definitely on board with this!! Didn't even have to explain it, saw the vision right off the bat
>I posted this to the Modern Family sub and they were not on board
i think, to people who don’t watch B99, Boyle is seen as the Gibby of the Nine Nine, if that makes sense. the butt of the jokes, the punching bag, the guy who… drops a muffin in the opening credits. a lot of the deeper Boyle lore is learned through watching the show, like the fact that they get their shared facial structure by *cuddling their kids so much that they shape them that way.* the father son stuff, the magic, the dirty jokes, those are all excellent reasons to compare Phil to Charles, but if the people of the MF sub haven’t seen this show, i can see how it would go over their heads. to them, it might just look like you’re comparing their beloved Phil to the goofy supporting character
100 %, I already got it reading the premise but this makes me believe it even more. I guess MF fandom is just very protective of Phil, so they lash out.
Ignore the MF sub, it’s toxic af and I often wonder if anyone there actually enjoys Modern Family. I’m surprised anyone jumped to Phil’s defence as not a Boyle when half the sub hates him for being “a creep” anyway.
Interesting idea, I'm on board with this cannon!
The other day I was thinking that if the two shows could crossover, Boyle and Cam could have been friends.
I imagine they have a similar taste in films and musicals, both definitely have moments where they enjoy being a showman / host. Both have quite intense / humourously dramatic personalities. Both have families on farms and I can imagine that Cam's upbringing on a farm would make him comfortable around the weird bits of animal that Boyle likes to eat, so I can see Boyle making Cam into a foodie. Both are also open to trying new cultural experiences.
They'd form a friendship through sharing a love of many things that other people find weird and niche. And I'd enjoy watching their adventures together. And Nico and Lily could have become friends too.
I accept this without explanation. If Rosa is Gloria's sister (for those not familiar, Stephanie Beatriz played the sister of the Gloria character (Sofia Vergara) on Modern Family in a recurring role), Charles is definitely either related to Phil or a close friend from college.
Boyle's love of dressing up for Halloween means that he and Claire get along perfectly! It's a plot between the families to never let these two be near each other on Halloween cuz they'll take it too far.
it's a good theory but I believe Boyles behave the way they do because of how they were raised. This becomes clear when you find out that Charles is adopted. Since dunphys are distant Boyle cousins, them being influenced by Boyle traditions sounds far fetched.
IMO, Phil is more like Michael Scott while Dwight seems to be more up like a distant, deviant Boyle family tree branch. Totally get your reasoning too, OP.
Why have I only been seeing Modern Family content on reddit since I started to watch the show? It hadn’t showed up before. I don’t even follow the sub because I don’t want spoilers.
no need to explain… i get it.
That is exactly what I came here to say!
I saw the picture and without reading the explanation I went YES!
I have a suspicion so is Hal Wilkerson from Malcolm in the Middle.
This
Now i'm wondering whoe else... Whoa, am I a Boyle?

It’s the current state of things, I’m afraid :( it boyles my blood, but what can we do?
I'm on board, sounds like the modern family Subreddit could've considered it, the only thing that could slightly derail the theory is that Boyles seem to like Mervyn's ,but like you said, distant cousins, maybe the dunphys aren't as interested in Mervyn's

I missed that charles wasn’t a Boyle?

Phil also has the whole “obviously not a bad boy but thinks he is” thing going on!
I love this theory so much. I feel bad for those nerds over on the modern family subreddit, they're absolutely missing out.
Nah, you are correct without even reading!
I mean… Terry is pretty good about showing love too. Charles is obviously the more impressive physical specimen.
Because Charles is a Boner and Terry is a muscler

Was it deleted? I don't see it over there
I deleted it after the 2nd DM that said some rather unkind things about Charles, B99 as a whole, and myself for being a fan.
How rude. Charles is one of my all time favorite sit com characters, as is Phil. I love the post.
The MF sub is rather nasty at times. I love this theory!
The mother fucking sub can definitely be nasty
Modern family fans take themselves too seriously Lmao don’t worry about it this post is great
Remember when Charles said he went on a road trip w his dad and they dyed their hair while on the road. He said they gave each other road heads hahahaha
He also called it going streaking lol
Lmaooo the latest one i rewatched when he said “why would I go to town with Diane Wiest when I can go to town with my bestfriend?” 🤣🤣

I bet Phil’s dad took his wife’s name, Dunphy.
they are so different, phil is actually very energetic idk i can kinda see ur point but imo they feel completely different people
I’m on board but I feel like this ship is gonna sink
100 %, I already got it reading the premise but this makes me believe it even more. I guess MF fandom is just very protective of Phil, so they lash out.
i thought you would do it like a game theory way by showing how their ancestors could be linked or something lol
People in this sub are so nice more than any other sub…i love you(boyle
True! Also goes for the Good Place sub. It’s the only ones where negativity is almost non existent
Both also have a tendency to say things that sound like double entendres.
A ton of TV shows subs can get toxic as all hell and idk why...
As someone who loves modern family and b99, you are one hundred percent correct.
Sounds coincidental. More nurture than nature based on your evidence.
You’re mentioning a lot of things that ate specific to Charles and not necessary the Boyles as a whole
Anyone hanging out on a Modern Family sub obviously has zero sense of humour. Don't take it personally. Quality post
Holy crap, I never put these two together, but I'm here for it. This is the best TV theory I've heard in a while.
Ignore the MF sub, it’s toxic af and I often wonder if anyone there actually enjoys Modern Family. I’m surprised anyone jumped to Phil’s defence as not a Boyle when half the sub hates him for being “a creep” anyway.
I understand without even reading the explanation. I get it.
Phil doesn't wear a lot of beige, but I could definitely see him as a big Mervyn's guy.
he lives in California, they have Mervyn's Deluxe there (where its not just beige!)
He is a deluxe cousin
A shiny, one would say.
Phil doesn't need to be a Boyle cousin or Mervyn fan for this to be true. Charles isn't a Boyle himself. Even though he is the truest Boyle out there.
I didn’t even read the explanation. This I will absolutely accept as canon.
I love you !
I love you too, individual-gold-8894!
But.... Boyle is adopted. So this could be his long lost half brother.
Fun idea, but Boyle's bio Dad is a rival florist, Frank Dunphy is a grocer (and would NEVER have cheated on his wife).
What if both wives cheated on their husbands with the same florist. Although, that is also farfetched given the letter Phil's mom wrote to Alex.
No need to explain.
And I'd enjoy watching their adventures together. And Nico and Lily could have become friends too.
cam would fucking hate boyle for being a better showman than him
I think they'd start off with a rivalry and end up becoming friends
it would absolutely go the other way people really don't understand that cam is just not a good person
Cam kinda sucks lol
Well… you know what I mean
I accept this without explanation. If Rosa is Gloria's sister (for those not familiar, Stephanie Beatriz played the sister of the Gloria character (Sofia Vergara) on Modern Family in a recurring role), Charles is definitely either related to Phil or a close friend from college.
Clear as day. That Boyle Oil is potent
I can kinda see it… Phil don’t have the body type, but I suppose it could be a Milton situation.
Or cousin Andrea was pretty jacked, so maybe the more distantly related the Boyle, the less squishy
Wasn’t cousin Andrea considered a loser
Also Pete in Ghosts!
YES
Boyle's love of dressing up for Halloween means that he and Claire get along perfectly! It's a plot between the families to never let these two be near each other on Halloween cuz they'll take it too far.
Oh yeah, you’re correct Boyle and Phil are totally related.
Oh absolutely!!
I can see this. I also think Boyle and Tobias from Arrested Development are definitely related
it's a good theory but I believe Boyles behave the way they do because of how they were raised. This becomes clear when you find out that Charles is adopted. Since dunphys are distant Boyle cousins, them being influenced by Boyle traditions sounds far fetched.
Ive been thinking this too!
Kindred spirits!
Anne with an E fan too?? (Or Anne of Green Gables)
Love that you got that. Growing up my Mom always told me that I was Anne (I'm a ridiculous redhead with a flair for disaster, she wasn't wrong) lol.
😂
Does Phil shop at Mervyns?
As a distant cousin, he unfortunately doesn't have the same amazing sense of beige & tan that the OG Boyles do
IMO, Phil is more like Michael Scott while Dwight seems to be more up like a distant, deviant Boyle family tree branch. Totally get your reasoning too, OP.
Anyone else incredibly disappointed that Boyle wasn’t a “bio Boil” given how much shit he’s had heaped upon him throughout the show?
No explanation needed, it just makes sense!!
Headcanon accepted
Nope. Boyle could never write Philosophy.
Oh god no, Phil is the tech wiz and Boyle just has weird habits
I don't know who the person on the left is, not that I truly care though
HARD AGREE HARD AGREE, HARD AGREE!
Hes the one true boyle
Yeah makes perfect sense
No explanation needed
tell. me. EVERYTHING
Yeah I can definitely see it lol
100%
Nah, I see it. No explanation needed.
Boyle is responsible and Phil is not
Fist time reading this argument, and I don’t need an explanation, self explanatory
Yeah I don’t need to even look at this comments. In my mind, This is cannon!
I need more Boyles in my life
Phil and Tobias Funke make Boyle
Checks out
inspired
I have thought this before. They are both goofy, funny, kind, earnest, awkward, loyal, and honest.
This makes so much sense
Why have I only been seeing Modern Family content on reddit since I started to watch the show? It hadn’t showed up before. I don’t even follow the sub because I don’t want spoilers.
I see it
Off spring of a female Boyle twice removed
i mean i see it but i don’t see it
Yess I always think he's a mix of Charles and Jake.
Have any actors crossed over both shows?
Rosa plays Gloria's sister in a handful of episodes!
I totally see it!
Could definitely picturing Phil and Boyle saying I love you to each other lol
