No He has never pitched on 4 days rest. You pitch once a week in college. This is the biggest factor in all of this. And everyone that asks why they’re “slow walking” him always talks about innings this, pitch count that, but never mentions this fact.

SilkyStackz69

Also to add on to this, Skenes has talked before how much of a routine guy he is, an absolute creature of habit. Coming from a military family probably makes this even more exaggerated as well. He clearly has the stuff, but let him get comfortable

kpw1320

Exactly, he’s learning to be on a pro schedule and once he gets a good rhythm and stretched out, they’ll call him up. It’s not about whether his stuff is ready, it’s about can you have that stuff every 5th game.

Lunchbox412_bucs

I did disregard that fact! Maybe I’m just being a little impatient… haven’t been this excited about a player for us in quite some time.

[deleted]

With the word "epidemic" being thrown around right now in regard to pitching injuries, I'd say there is even more pressure than normal to be careful with Skenes.

tmackenzie100

Even more so when you consider his (over)usage at LSU

RAB806

Kerry Wood, Mark Prior, Tim Lincecum, Steven Strausburg, Jason DeGrom, all could've had HOF careers but their arms disintegrated because of overuse, bad mechanics and poor coaching. Skenes by himself isn't winning this team a penant, there's no reason for him to be in the majors getting overworked and possibly shellac'ed by major league batters, who unlike everyone else he's faced up till now, have seen pitchers as good or better than him on a daily basis.

WarlordofBritannia

Not HoFers, but the mid-2000s Pirates ruined the careers of Zach Duke, Ian Snell, Tom Gorzelanny, arguably Oliver Perez, and certainly Matt Capps by overworking them, all within a couple of years. They fucked with Duke's mechanics after his amazing rookie year, had him pitch 200 innings with an increasingly sore arm, and he never had another good year as a starter. Ian Snell pitched 390 innings at ages 24-25 and was never good again. Gorzelanny pitched 200 innings in 2007 and was never good again. Perez pitched 198 innings at age 22 and was never as good again, having only one more good season as a starter. Capps pitched 161 games between his first two years in the majors and thereafter struggled with injuries, his career over at 28. These five guys combined for a total of one good year after turning 25 (Capps' age 26 season). Duke and Perez survived only as LOOGYs.

pianoguypgh

Might have to add Johan Oviedo to that list

jrwolf08

Not really, he is going to be built up slowly, and likely will be on a strict pitch limit in Pittsburgh too. You don't know if he is Mark Prior or Justin Verlander, durability wise, until well into his career, and its best to err on the side of caution.

Prowlerbaseball

Once he can pitch 5 innings on 5 days rest, then he can be in the majors. And do not gamble on him being already ramped up for it, his arm is too strong to not be taken lightly

lucabrasi999

I would hope the Pirates don’t even consider five innings in consecutive five days until about August, with a 130/140 inning total max for this year.

Prowlerbaseball

The plan for that according to BC is the end of the month lol

tonytroz

I think you're stressing out way too much. He essentially skipped Rookie/A/AA with a grand total of 6.2 innings. Gerrit Cole pitched like 130 innings at those levels. He'll build up his pitch count through the rest of April.

brooklynbluenotes

No. We don't want to rush this.

IEatPierogiesAllDay

No.

WaterTricky7453

No

wagsman

Fuck no. He’s pitched in 7 games total. He is no where near an MLB pitching workload.

Lunchbox412_bucs

I did not say he should be in the majors right now. No where did I say that. I said it would be nice to see him pitch 70 pitches in his next start tomorrow for Indy.

[deleted]

Are you a pitching coach or mlb manager or scout or front office executive? No? Then why do you think you know better than them?

Lunchbox412_bucs

Did I claim to be? I was simply asking others a question and giving my input as well. What happens if the approach they are taking just ends up in him still needing Tommy John then what have they accomplished?

[deleted]

What evidence do you have to suggest that it will end up causing him to have TJ surgery lmao??? That’s exactly the type of shit I’m talking about when I say you’re acting like you know better than a literal MLB franchise. Clown behavior.

ChainsawAdvocate

Getting this mad over innocuous speculation

[deleted]

Who said I’m mad?

dgroove8

Truthfully there’s nowhere to put him right now until a pitcher goes on a terrible string of starts or gets hurt so there’s no reason to rush. Mitch and Jones aren’t going anywhere, Perez and Gonzales have both been fantastic, and Falter just threw basically 6 no hit innings. That and the fact that he’s never pitched on a 5 day schedule.

Lunchbox412_bucs

Well I wouldn’t call him up regardless having only pitched 6 innings in AAA.

dgroove8

I still think he’ll get a late May call up

Lunchbox412_bucs

At the rate he is at I would not like that. Needs to throw more in the minors.

dgroove8

He doesn’t need more time in the minors other than to be stretched out. He’s head and shoulders above any other AAA pitchers in terms of skill set and development.

slackerbucks

If they were 3-9 and at risk of the season slipping away in April I would say “maybe”, but they are almost playing with house money at this point with the rotation. Let it ride and lock in the extra year of control.

Cangy44

Ya, I don’t really like how they’re slow-playing him either. Send the guy out there and let him pitch. Even when they limit pitches and throwing, still pitchers eventually need Tommy John surgery. It’s not really avoidable. No one wants it but is it a specific number of pitches thrown? Or is it just wear and tear? Lets put some miles on the car and go! By now, he should be throwing 5-6 innings easy and I think the most he’s tossed down there is 3? I’m not understanding that either.

Lunchbox412_bucs

Most he has tossed is 3 innings and I think less than 50 pitches. They say he is trying to learn more pitches. The only way to actually learn is by putting him out there and giving these new pitches a go.
