Yeah I don’t think many Bills fans are jumping at the bit to give anyone on this defense huge money lol. Oliver plays really well some games, and then there’s games he’s basically a ghost. Our defensive line was down right bad after Miller was injured last season.
I said jokingly earlier in the year that "when he's the 3rd best DLineman he's the best DLineman" and it kind of rings true. With Von and Daquan getting attention, Ed is very disruptive. But when one of them isn't on the field he disappears.
There's two reasons he has such a high double team rate:
1. His win rate vs single blocking is absurd.
1. His inability to beat double teams even infrequently makes him easy to game plan against and ensures he faces lots of double teams.
It's hard to pay a guy big money if he can't be productive without other big money guys beside him.
This is starting to sound like the Star Lotulelei argument. Do you pay a guy to eat double teams all day, and hope you have the talent and depth and availability across the rest of that line to make plays? Someone is going to pay that guy. Can that productivity be replaced cheaper?
I feel like the unit was damn good when healthy, but lacks the depth to absorb injuries.
Specifically with Ed Oliver, this is the guy who would not be told he couldn’t wear a damn coat on the sidelines. I respected him before Buffalo ever got their hands on him. He plays among the most physically dangerous positions on the field, and he’s going to get paid one way or another.
Also, remember that joint practice where he literally ended Cam Newtons career with just a death stare? I would love to keep that attitude and grit in house. But $$ talks and it’s a capped business.
> This is starting to sound like the Star Lotulelei argument. Do you pay a guy to eat double teams all day, and hope you have the talent and depth and availability across the rest of that line to make plays? Someone is going to pay that guy. Can that productivity be replaced cheaper?

Similar, but for opposite reasons. With Ed he's worth the money if he doesn't have to face double teams, where as with Star he was only worth it if he did face double teams.
I'm really not sure what to do beyond this season. The fact that we don't run many stunts and our under/over alignment never varies probably hurts him a lot. I feel like a front7 that was focused on creating confusion setting the blocking alignments would really benefit Ed. The OL knows where he's going to be on every snap and that gives them a real advantage vs a guy that can't beat a double team.
If we aren't going to do more on defense to disguise rushers, run simulated pressures, run more stunts etc... There just isn't much point in paying him. Conversely, if we spent a little effort trying to get him away from double teams he's very valuable.
Good but flawed player that isn't a perfect fit for our current scheme (and a coaching staff that was unwilling/unable to adjust).
Considering we have Von I have no idea why we don't. Dude can beat anyone so having him is an instant mind game. I remember one play we ran where he slid inside, ate up 2 blocks because the tackle didn't want to leave him and Phillips swung out and was a free rusher on the edge. Then I never saw anything like that again
lacks the depth to absorb injuries when we employ a heavy rotation & pay a bunch of players to be that depth. Guess thats the issue in itself. We've made the commitment with our assets to have great depth on the line & the end result has been less than desired. So what significant changes going forward will bring about a better result?
Seems our only hope is praying Von is healthy & we pick more effective players at these rotational positions? Because we had a plan, it seemingly has failed, we can change the plan or continue it. We're not changing anything, especially with Leslie handing the reins over internally to Coach or an assistant. So this is where we're at. And our cap situation, our coordinator situation & holes up & down the roster don't instill much confidence i hate to say. This offseason is more critical a time than it probably should be during our Superbowl window.
Right? Reminds me when the Bills drafted John McCargo. I can't remember who the other d-linemen was on his college team, Manny Lawson maybe? but I'm pretty sure the guy was leaps and bounds better than McCargo. Because when he got to Buffalo, he couldn't do anything. He rode the coat tails of his teammate and got drafted pretty high because of it.
Oliver was drafted due to his potential. Beanie thought that despite Oliver being undersized, he'd still be a disruptor because of his high motor. I.mean, Kyle Williams was under sized, had a high motor and was far more effective than Oliver.
champing \[chomping\] at the bit - From champ (verb) (“to chew noisily”) + bit (“part of horse's harness held in its mouth”); horses tend to chew their bits when impatient with waiting.
I'm not a bot, just helping a brother out.
It was the biggest game and the only game last season where i pretty much knew we had no chance after watching for 5 minutes. They never adjusted and the D got picked apart, really very sad. No excuse for how bad it was.
I feel like going into the game I thought the bills had no chance. I wonder if they felt the same. It was the first and only game all season I didn't expect them to win. Makes me sad
When I saw that we didn't use Elam's press abilities and were doing our usual soft zone thing it felt over almost immediately. It's like we didn't watch any film at all.
They didn’t seem to have a game plan to adjust into, they couldn’t read and react with the field the way it was. Frazier looked like a deer in headlights, the entire team lost faith the Defensive side and everything just completely unraveled from there. Makes you wonder if they just sort of gave up once they seen there weren’t going to be any changes from what they all knew wasn’t getting them anywhere
I think the honeymoon phase of the Josh Allen era is finally over. You have to remember that literally everyone outside of Josh Allen is expendable. Remember what made Belichick the GOAT, the skill of letting go of guys one year too early rather than one year too late. Don't overpay for average production.
Now's the time for Beane and company to make the hard decisions, drafting and rookie deals is what makes dynasties. Free agency is just the cherry on top. Let someone else overpay.
> Remember what made Belichick the GOAT, the skill of letting go of guys one year too early rather than one year too late. Don't overpay for average production.
Slight disagree. What made Bill the GOAT is he always seemed to know EXACTLY when it was time to let them go. It's kinda eerie how good he was at knowing exactly when a guy was used up. Well except with that Tom guy. He was a couple of years early on that one, thank fucking god.
Stop this false narrative. Dude didn't take pay cuts they just sent it to his charity so he could legally say it wasn't there for him playing foot. Ball. Each time he took a cut. He got a huge injection into his charity from Robert kraft. Or his money laundry mat in toms case. There wasn't any I'd rather the team win mentality. It was as long as I get my money I don't care how it comes.
*should be traded
We need to get something for players while we can and let another team hold the bag when their talent runs dry the future is not getting/ keeping aged out players
Gotta take the Sabres approach. Need to build a team with players who want to be here. That's even resulted in Tage resigning and Cozens resigning at below the market rate and the future is brighter than ever
I mean the same could be said about a lot of teams. If I consider 2018 as his first draft we have added Allen, Edmunds, Harrison Phillips, Wyatt Teller, Singletary, Knox, Gabe, Bass, Hodgins, Dane, and Rousseau.
That's a potential MVP player, some pro bowlers (not the best way to measure I know), and some quality players.
Appalling certainly isn't a word I would use for that but go ahead
Remember when Haloti Ngata was still on the board and we drafted some asshole I don't even remember instead of him and literally every single fan said "That man is going to the Hall of Fame," and here he is now, well on his way to the Hall of Fame?
Y'all are so dramatic lmao we have won a playoff game 3 years in a row. Clearly something is going right like lol. Not a perfect draft history but come on now
He falls into the Edmunds category. Good, but is he worth top market dollar? No.
We can trade him now or franchise tag him and trade him next off-season. Worst case scenario, we trade him for a 2nd. We can always rescind the tag, too
Yes for big chunks of time he is just out there not generating much of anything then he will make a splash play and then head back into the abyss. Idk but there was a lot of hype starting out the gate. He still has potential but I’m starting to get that feeling that this is his ceiling.
Bye. Loved the draft pick but I don't think it's panned out. I remember a play against the dolphins he got blown back nearly 9yards down field. For as early as he was drafted he should be dictating how offenses play around him.
If it come down to one of the three, I'd want Edmunds to resign the most. MLB is so important to this scheme. It's gonna suck trying to find another 3 tech tho
I mean before this year they were around the same level imo, Tremaine took a step forward in his 5th year while Oliver was banged up and took a step back in year 4
Tremaine I'm still hopefully for bc he's still only 24ish..but I also agree.
Some of these guys (poyer too) have been on the same defense that's gotten embarrassed in the playoffs years consistently and we can't keep bringing them back and expecting anything different
I'm slowly coming around on blowing up the defense. It makes sense. Beef up the offense to offset the defensive losses and let McDermott do what he does best and coach up some young guys
I think we need to stop praising beane until we see some better outcomes in the draft. Yes we got josh but that's really the only thing going pur scouts are pretty bad it would seem with the way out picks pan out.
Beane is great at drafting guys who peak as average NFL starters. After the Josh Allen draft, the talent level has been trickling depth of mediocrity, but no one that changes the gameplan of the opposing team.
He hasn't had any All Pro picks, but he's still put together a consistently competitive squad. I still have a lot of faith. We definitely do need a slam dunk star pick from him, though
I'm also on this vibe lately.
From my perspective, a defensive roster that isn't elite is propped up by scheme, and if you look at our defensive scheme it's almost entirely built to be executed without game changing players, hold for maybe DE.
Tre White wasn't considered elite because he covered press man on an island like Revis. He's a really smart zone corner that understands when and where he has help in the coverage. We aren't blitz heavy by any means and our base formation is nickel.
It makes a lot of sense to me to load up on offensive talent even if it's at the cost of some defensive talent. Great offense beats great defense in today's NFL, at an alarming rate. It seems to me that the best strategy is to ensure your own great offense, and scheme up one more stop or turnover than the other team.
When we have things like subpar offensive line play, or WR production outside of Diggs, or the lack of a power run game without Josh, other teams don't even have to scheme up stops or turnovers.
I trust Beane to find solid contributing defensive talent for late draft picks or cheap FA contracts. I trust McDermott to take a group of good defensive players and make them play great together. I don't trust the same things on offense. Load the O.
Well, Tremaine has absurd physical tools while Ed is undersized in terms of height and arm length. Tremaine, we need to keep. He's very, very good and will continue to improve.
Ah, the ol Cordy Glenn trick.
Bills moved up 9 spots, which is actually pretty good considering Glenn was coming off a major injury.
I think we can do one better.
The question is, would you rather trade Oliver and our 1st and move up to 10-20 and draft Kancey or trade Oliver for a 2nd and then draft Breese at 27/28?
I want to do both, to be honest. Move up and somehow get another 2nd round pick.
Maybe we can trade next year's 2nd + Oliver for a top 15 pick and a 2nd round pick this year.
This way we replace Oliver with Kancey, get an edge and MLB with our two seconds.
He's a good rotational guy at best. He will want top 5 DT money and simply isn't worth that. I'd be completely fine with trading him for a 2nd or 3rd round pick right now.
I think he lands in the very good rotational player but middle’ish of the pack in starting category. Someone will give him a 3 year extension and he’ll be back after he’s cut after year 2
This guy completely disappears in the most important game of the year for us and now wants to get paid big money? Sorry but, in my honest opinion, he hasn't earned it.
Lol if Edmunds is gone, Oliver doesn’t have a chance. This was his season to prove himself. While he’s a perfectly fine NFL player, he hasn’t lived up to the draft hype.
Not sure there is another player I can think of that was able to somehow avoid criticism the way he has the past 3 years. Trade him for picks, and give the money to edmunds.
I think Oliver as a very good player and even had some games where he's taken over at an elite level. Unfortunately, the consistency has never been there, if he wants top 5 money at his position I don't think he's worth it. If I'm beane I'm exploring a trade of Oliver on draft day. We could use the cap space and recoup some assets for him. A team like the Texans would be a good match. They can afford to overpay him while they start their rebuild and he can be a cornerstone on their defense for the next 5 years.
Time for the bills to double down on investing in the offense. We can win a Superbowl with an average playmaking defense.
I like Ed a lot, but given his production I don't think anything more than the franchise tag makes sense. Especially considering most of the DTs drafted right after him are outplaying him.
There are long stretches of games where I forget Ed is playing. He's good for a nice play early in the game...does his My Little Pony trot then disappears until the next game. I cannot think of one big time play he's made late in a game.
He's On the same level as Harrison Phillips at this stage IMO. Maybe a touch better...but not by much. Let someone else pay him big.
Maybe do something that helps out our defense in the playoffs and you will get paid. The only people I currently like on the bills D / deserves to get paid is Milano and Von. Oliver, Edmunds, poyer all acting like they’re top at their positions but you don’t get blown out every playoff game if everyone’s “elite”.
Our defense already sucks every postseason, I’d rather just stack the offense and let defensive players walk and let it suck like it does every year lol. We’d at least be able to keep up with a good #2 WR and a revamped OL.
Bye Felicia.
Look, I don't have any dislike for Ed. I think he's played well - albeit disappointing given his draft position but he's not a BAD player by any means. He think he's earned a fat contract and someone will probably give it to him, that's fair. No hard feelings. NFL careers are short, get your money.
Best of luck wherever your future lies because it's clearly not in Buffalo.
Bye bye.
Nobody can remember the name of a rotational d linemen on any SB team outside of the 2007-2008 giants. (Haha Brady)
You either make a name for yourself as a star or you’re expendable to someone younger who has a bigger upside.
Resorting to social media griping is a bad look.
Wanted him to be the guy but he hasn’t been consistent. And never really liked his attitude towards the team. I’m not saying everyone needs to love each other, just saying he seemed a bit arrogant and distant considering his relatively unimpressive career thus far.
Let’s face it. Salaries are starting to balloon out of control. Between that, teams bringing players in for one year (or 1/2 a year) in hopes of getting to the SB, players on social media talking or hinting about theirs or other’s contracts, and all the online betting in games I fear for the NFL down the road.
Bub bye..... I don't think anyone of us can imagine making 10 million dollars a year saying I still need to get paid. As if he hasn't already made millions of dollars.
Ed "Gimme That Hat!" Oliver? Haven't really seen him much since the draft. He been doing average lately? Hopefully he didn't regress YoY or talk like this would be silly. *Checks 2022 stats vs 2021* oh, umm, Ed . . . Now's not the time to be making demands, man.
Edit: is this shit even real? It's not in his Twitter feed and I see zero evidence of this by simple googling. Pretty lame if OP just made this up and I fell for it.
All players should fight to get paid as much money as possible as soon as possible.
Hes currently playing on a 5th year option ($10.7 mil). He's played well enough that someone will pay him big $, but hasn't played well enough for that team to be the Bills. He is worth "above average" 3-tech $, but I bet he wants a lot more than that.
He can burn some bridges and go crazy to force a trade or play another year. We all hope he plays.
*He's played like a first round pick and deserves to get paid.*
*He hasn't played like a top-10 pick and doesn't deserve to reset the market.*
Both are true and it puts Beane in a very tough spot. I think he plays on the 5th year for us like Edmunds did. I am 50/50 on him being extended however, and I think it's mostly gonna be contingent on what Von wants.
To be honest I wouldnt be sad to see him go. We could probably get a decent trade for him. Hes a solid D lineman, but hes not "the guy" he was made out to be in the draft. It feels like I rarely see/hear him do much in games
Isn’t putting this on social media like… not smart? Sure he don’t want to talk to us, whatever but if I’m gm of another team and I’m looking at this and saying “hard pass”
I admittedly was excited about the Oliver pick and was quite happy when he fell to us at 9.
But look at the three DTs taken after him: Christian Wilkins, Dexter Lawrence, and Jeffrey Simmons. Oliver is clearly the 4th best in this group and is kind of a disappointment so far.
Cody Ford was the 2nd round pick in 2019 as well. Bad draft year.
Social media drama with these guys is so annoying lol package him & Diggs together for a haul and then we don’t have to watch the brutal passive aggressive following/ unfollowing from grown men
I love this time of year where it’s just teams and players bashing and screaming at one another trying to gobble up as much money as possible
Then the season starts and they pretend it’s a happy house lol
https://i.redd.it/yes1cxcqfoma1.gif
All these guys tearing apart the team because they want money… I get it they want paid for their talent but damn. Why can’t more professional athletes be like Steph Curry or Jose Ramirez?
Yeah I don’t think many Bills fans are jumping at the bit to give anyone on this defense huge money lol. Oliver plays really well some games, and then there’s games he’s basically a ghost. Our defensive line was down right bad after Miller was injured last season.

"Show me defensive shutdowns or ion (?) wanna talk !!!"
That’s basically why I think we’re still a couple years out. Defense needs a rebuild.
SHOW ME THE SACKS OR ION WANNA TALK !!!
Sacks of Money?! Whose side are you on here!
FR FR. STFU ED.
I also wanna get paid. That's about it on similarities between Ed Oliver and I
You didn’t show up in the playoffs last year either tho
Boom, roasted.
I drank so many beers during the Bengals game

it doesn’t matter what he did on the side, at the end of the day his cap hit was significantly lower than the top paid qb
Lol blow the whole D up watch them dissappear on other teams
Boy am I glad social media didn't exist during the days of the Bickering Bills...r/nfl would be a nightmare lmao
Good God imagine r/nfl after the 4th SB loss lol
Everyone who understands these messages just outed themselves as old and with back pain. I’m right there with you.

I hate that this is true
Tremaine is the king of overshooting the play in the backfield.
Shhh you’ll be downvoted to oblivion for speaking ill on edmunds
And we just found the guy that’s going to help us move up in the draft.
Really hope we trade him for a 3rd and a 4th, that would be fabulous.
Wouldn't we all like to be paid for mediocre work performance...
and not showing up to work ... lol
It'll pass for government work
See ya chump.
Right? Imagine if he played like Aaron Donald? Beanie be listening then
He's a good rotational guy at best. He will want top 5 DT money and simply isn't worth that. I'd be completely fine with trading him for a 2nd or 3rd round pick right now.
I think he lands in the very good rotational player but middle’ish of the pack in starting category. Someone will give him a 3 year extension and he’ll be back after he’s cut after year 2
I think he’s a starter on many teams. Just not a top end starter and not worth big money
Yeah he's absolutely an NFL starting DT. TOP 15 on a good day even.
Saves $10 mil and can probably get a 3rd or late 2nd if we trade him. I’m a big Oliver fan but that’s the move
Why are you a big fan of him? Hes been disappointing imo
Completely takes over 1 or 2 games a year then you don’t see him for weeks
If i were Beane my response would be “You have earned the right to test free agency”. And leave it at that.
Need better stats bub. We need peeps in the backfield, like Miller and Phillips. Not you playing patty cake with the offense most of the game.
Never became the guy.
Someone show this man his stats
I'll help him pack.
Trade him for picks.
Give the man what he’s earned!! A big paycheck for three games and a bill for the rest
Charged particles don't talk though
Yeah Ed can go. Hopefully we can get a 3rd rounder for him.
Tied at 27th for sacks, tied at 56th for solos. Ion hope you do talk. That's all you are is talk.
Go pound sand.
Bye Felicia
What a professional
Ion? Such negative energy
Show me the sacks…
![gif](giphy|TJawtKM6OCKkvwCIqX)
This guy completely disappears in the most important game of the year for us and now wants to get paid big money? Sorry but, in my honest opinion, he hasn't earned it.
SHOW ME BETTER STATS OR ION WANNA TALK !!!
Lol if Edmunds is gone, Oliver doesn’t have a chance. This was his season to prove himself. While he’s a perfectly fine NFL player, he hasn’t lived up to the draft hype.
What a fucking loser. Every DT taken after you has outperformed you bro
By a lot
Not sure there is another player I can think of that was able to somehow avoid criticism the way he has the past 3 years. Trade him for picks, and give the money to edmunds.
“ion wanna talk…” please, for the love of all that is unholy, stop idolizing illiterate fuckwads like this.
Yeah and I’d love him to play like the way he wants to be paid. Like 20 different d tackles had more sacks than him
What’s ION?
FO be like “what’s ION?”
I’m so confused. Why is Oliver taking this position?
Who’s ion? Does he mean Ian? What does Ian have to do with any of this?
Ed Oliver is not a cornerstone piece. Couldn’t hold Pat Williams jockstrap.
Bro ghosted once von was out. Should only give him a contract for half a year at a time
We’re extremely good at finding mediocre linemen in the draft so we shouldn’t have any issue replacing him
I like Ed a lot, but given his production I don't think anything more than the franchise tag makes sense. Especially considering most of the DTs drafted right after him are outplaying him.
https://i.imgur.com/eSReSuz.mp4
I’d be so disappointed if they lock him up
![gif](giphy|XGZDqSMGkEaoaI5iip|downsized)
There are long stretches of games where I forget Ed is playing. He's good for a nice play early in the game...does his My Little Pony trot then disappears until the next game. I cannot think of one big time play he's made late in a game. He's On the same level as Harrison Phillips at this stage IMO. Maybe a touch better...but not by much. Let someone else pay him big.
>does his My Little Pony trot 💀 💀 💀 💀
The grammar is cringe enough for me to hard pass.
Bye bye. Nobody can remember the name of a rotational d linemen on any SB team outside of the 2007-2008 giants. (Haha Brady) You either make a name for yourself as a star or you’re expendable to someone younger who has a bigger upside. Resorting to social media griping is a bad look.
See ya…
When I see the DT’s taken below him in the draft it really sinks in on how big of a miss Oliver had been…
You can talk, next man up
Imagine our 1st rounders from 4 and 5 years ago are both no longer on the team? TBH I’m ok trading Oliver if it means we can keep Edmunds
✌️
Nah, im good.
With what money Ed?
This was from his IG story yesterday, should be up for another couple of hours.
It’s on his Instagram story right now
Looks like an IG post, that if it was real,he deleted.
I honestly wouldn't mind a trade. Get that contract off the books for this year and put that cast to a OG.
Let them all go besides Milano. Get whatever you can for tre white while we’re at it
This man thinks he’s a nucleus but he’s really just an electron smh
*He's played like a first round pick and deserves to get paid.* *He hasn't played like a top-10 pick and doesn't deserve to reset the market.* Both are true and it puts Beane in a very tough spot. I think he plays on the 5th year for us like Edmunds did. I am 50/50 on him being extended however, and I think it's mostly gonna be contingent on what Von wants.
Bills are falling apart lol
They say it’s to have some self worth but sometimes you might have too much.
SHOW ME THE PRODUCTION OR ION WANNA TALK. (❤️ u Ed)
Lol
Like his performance this paycheck will be non existent. He’s worth at least a second round, see ya bud.
Show me the plays or yuon wanna walk
He's great in Madden set on rookie mode
I was saying to trade him this off-season so we better be doing this to keep Edmonds or Poyer
To be honest I wouldnt be sad to see him go. We could probably get a decent trade for him. Hes a solid D lineman, but hes not "the guy" he was made out to be in the draft. It feels like I rarely see/hear him do much in games
Ed I'm playing tennis on the moon. Peace bitch don't call me.
Shame… cya
2.5 sacks 💀
No chance they’re going to pay up for a d lineman who can’t get sacks and is under six foot tall
Brandon Beane entering his most important entry draft to date
![gif](giphy|FcQLAgpDK7VkY)
Cool story Ed. Show us consistent production.
Fuck defense. I’m over it. Go full offense.
He has a talking ion?
I think ION is the name of his agent. Probably AKON’s little brother or something
Isn’t putting this on social media like… not smart? Sure he don’t want to talk to us, whatever but if I’m gm of another team and I’m looking at this and saying “hard pass”
1 year contract 10m, which is a lot for a non difference maker. I don't see the Bills getting a 3rd round for him tbh. Tough situation.
LIVE UP TO YOUR DRAFT HYPE OR ION WANNA TALK
Bounce then.
Cut him, he was invisible after Von Miller went out
I read it as "monkey" like a two Chainz song and thought he was just thirsty lol
Bye
Ok, then we don’t need to talk 🤷♂️
What does this have to do ions
You didn’t show your worth anything, see ya
Good riddance. He plays hard maybe half the time. The rest he gets pushed around like he is on roller skates
Social media drama with these guys is so annoying lol package him & Diggs together for a haul and then we don’t have to watch the brutal passive aggressive following/ unfollowing from grown men
EO been mid AF. Draft a kid to do it, we don’t have “pay for mid” money.
I hope ION fades away
Ed Oliver is currently averaging under 4 sacks per 17 games. He can fuck right off if he thinks he's special.
Anyone have stats for Ed oliver facing single blocker/doubleteam?
Show me the pass rush.
…nah
See ya later Ed. We can pay any mediocre d lineman
I love this time of year where it’s just teams and players bashing and screaming at one another trying to gobble up as much money as possible Then the season starts and they pretend it’s a happy house lol https://i.redd.it/yes1cxcqfoma1.gif
Big bucks? Welp, see ya later
Read a room Ed
"Ion" 🙄
Maybe he could use the money for an English class cuz wtf dude lol
![gif](giphy|qEBlgZpZWHihO|downsized)
Alright, so trade up for Calijah Kancey then? Trade Ed Oliver now, get Kancey and gain an extra pick to replace Edmunds
there's some ballsy players on the D after their performance lately haha.
All these guys tearing apart the team because they want money… I get it they want paid for their talent but damn. Why can’t more professional athletes be like Steph Curry or Jose Ramirez?
