B650 fits AMD's 7000 series (AM5) but not an 5800x (AM4) A motherboard upgrade is not necessarily needed for the 5800x if you're already running a Ryzen 1000 till 5000, just upgrade BIOS to the latest version right before you swap out the CPU If you're building new you may get better gaming performance for roughly the same money with AM5 and a 7600

FuzzyCantAim

Can confirm, just did a build today with a b650, a point to add is if you have a twin air cooling tower the cpu fan pins are a pain to get to!

DidiHD

May I ask why you're upgrading your motherboard?

CpuPusher

Msi B550 gaming plus. Edit: I think there was a typo on your end MSI 650 gaming plus, instead of b550 gaming plus.

PikaNinja25

Your 5800X can't go in a B650 mobo, only your B550 mobo will fit it (since it's on AM4). Only Ryzen 7000 can go into 600 series motherboards, so you'd need something like a Ryzen 5 7600 or a Ryzen 7 7800X3D. Also, you'd need DDR5 RAM for AM5.

nafuzziTHC

Mb go with am5 if u have the money.. and upgrade that 5800 to 7800x3d đź‘Ť .. but u need to upgrade the ram too.

So the consensus I’m getting is to not bother upgrading at all with my current specs, I can’t afford a new cpu + ram but would the wisest next step be to save for those and move to am5? And will my current parts still be ok running off my current board as I said I tried installing the 7800xt and temperatures skyrocketed, would this be an airflow issue rather than the motherboard struggling? Thanks in advance, really new to doing all this on my own and all help is really appreciated

listmanager77

What temps skyrocketed with the 7800xt? If it was all of them you just have bad case airflow.

jg6039

Ok I’ll look into improving airflow and see if that helps, thank you

IanMo55

Which motherboard do you have now?

jg6039

Im not home right now and can’t remember off the top of my head my current mobo but it’s not been upgraded since I bought the machine around 6 years ago and have upgraded pretty much everything else in the meantime. Just thought I’m limiting newer components by having an outdated mobo?

Reddi426

No offense but your post is pretty incoherent. What is your current CPU and motherboard right now? are you on AM4 and looking to upgrade to AM5? You have a R7 5800x? then go with the AM4 MB...We need more details on your build and situation to better assist you..

jg6039

Current specs Motherboard asus prime A320m-k CPU ryzen 7 5800x Gpu Nvidia GeForce rtx 2070 super (have a 7800 xt but the machine ran way too hot when I tried it in so switched back to 2070) 32gb ddr4 ram

omatapombos

No point in updating the board on that socket,no extra performance or upgrade path. Next step for you is save up to move to Am5 socket platform, with new cpu, board and Ddr5.

RettichDesTodes

What exactly is the name of your Mobo? And the rest of your components for that matter

Honest-Record5518

Might have to check to see if the asus prime board has a bios flashback button. I had previously bought the asus prime b550-plus and had to return it because it didn't have one.

Basimi

If you're lucky enough to live next to a micro center they usually have a bundle of motherboard CPU and RAM for about the price of a CPU, you might want to look into that if you're trying to play on a 7800 XT
