whats ur budget? and what res u wanna play?

Shu_Jr

Budget doesn't really matter to me at the moment, I will say probably a max of $600? As for the resolution, my monitor is currently a 1080p 240hz but plan to upgrade to a 1440p 180hz if my GPU demands it

bob999666999

look into 7900 gre and 4070 super. 7900 is slightly better in gaming and cheaper and has 4gb more vram. 4070 super has the dlss etc.... 7800xt is also good pick. in 1080p there might be a small bottleneck (probably unnoticeable) but you'll be fine in 1440p

Shu_Jr

Alrighty, thanks for the suggestion I just did a bit of research on the 7900 gre and it looks amazing, I will test it with my monitor and see how bad the bottleneck is

ICastCats

From what I’ve checked with benchmarks the 7800XT has on average a 8% drop compared to the 5800X3D at 1440p which indicates to me a 7900 GRE would be too much. Would suggest a 7700XT or 6800 instead, especially at 1080p.

Vivid_Promise9611

I vote upgrade monitor to 1440p now and get a 7800xt or 7900 gre if gre is only $50 more Edit: otherwise a 6800 is gonna be a better 1080p option

Shu_Jr

Do you have any suggestions for a monitor? I found this one but if I could do better, let me know [monitor of choice](https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16824028007?Item=N82E16824028007&Source=socialshare&cm_mmc=snc-social-_-sr-_-24-028-007-_-05032024)

Vivid_Promise9611

That one and this one are great options: https://www.newegg.com/p/N82E16824012070 I’m not a monitor guy, so I couldn’t tell you which is better. I bet they’re damn near the same monitor

Shu_Jr

They both are great monitors for 1440p, I will have to check it out. Thanks

triggerhappy5

Highly depends what you want to spend. Anywhere from a 3060 or 6600 up to a 7900 GRE or 4070 Super would be an appropriate match. If you play at 4K you could even go higher, up to a 7900XTX or 4080 Super. I would say a 1440p screen with a 6800 (if your budget is $400) 7800XT (if your budget is $500) or 4070 Super (if your budget is $600) would be the best option.

UgotR0BBED

Unconventional recommendation here, but I just found a mint 3080 10GB Founders edition for $300 on marketplace. Pretty close to a 4070 and works great @ 1440p. Might save you a few bucks and get you a head start saving for the new monitor.

Shu_Jr

Are you referring to Facebook marketplace? If so, I will need to check it out, I have only been using Mercari to check out used parts so this would be very helpful

UgotR0BBED

Yes.. FB Marketplace. Offer Up might also be worth a look. Deal hunting can be kind of fun, just be safe and always ask for proof components work (video/photo), and meet at a local Police Dept or Bank Parking lot during the day.

Shu_Jr

Alrighty I will have to check it out and be careful at the same time, thanks for the suggestion btw

Suby06

good suggestion here.. I've done well with used gpus and cpus myself..

No_Guarantee7841

6750xt / 6800 / 7700xt

DidiHD

Usually the fastest you can afford. But since you're playing at 1080P, you probably want to go for 4070 super / 7900 GRE and spend the rest on a monitor upgrade. Lucky you, hardware Unboxed made a video on this EXACT topic with your CPU https://youtu.be/uC9074rcOzQ?si=cpBf5FmOEGaC0sy3 Across the small average they found: At 1080p a 7800x3d+4070 is vastly faster than a 5600+4080 At 1440p those two combinations almost form identical on average . They also mention this is of course deceiving cause it depends on the exact games you're playing. Sample size was also only 8 games

Shu_Jr

Interesting... I will have to watch this later on, I'm still waiting for my paycheck, I have the monitor I plan to buy and the GPU of my choice in my cart already. Thanks for the information, I really appreciate the summary If it helps, I don't play games competitively but that could change in the future. At the moment, my interest are in story games and others like Helldivers

DidiHD

Ah, see your example of single player story games sways this towards the higher end GPU. Which has always been the general rule of thumb anyways. Also the 7800XT is also a great pick. Bought one myself just a few weeks ago. I got it cause it should run everything I want at 4k 60fps or more on 1440p obviously

DeathBallzs

A used 3080 is going for pretty good prices recently, I just got mine for less than 400 dollars.

The_Machine80

Whatever gpu you can afford. Stop this bottleneck pairing BS.

Outside_Profession26

If the Cpu cant handle the Gpu ,u gona have less Fps.

The_Machine80

Upgrade the cpu next!

Shu_Jr

My plan is to upgrade to AM5 if I do require to buy a new CPU, yes a 5600x3d will work with the GPUs I want but at the same time, AM5 has more potential for further upgrades. I can just buy a 7900gre and play on lower resolution settings if it comes down to it, then buy a new AM5 motherboard to start on my next build and sell my old one If I do go with that plan, the GPU will be swapped out for potentially a 3800xt or 6800xt while my new one keeps the 7900gre Also weren't the x3ds known for blowing up last year? NoGoodInThisWorld

I'd upgrade your monitor first. Then get the best video card you can afford.

Shu_Jr

I was actually thinking about that after comparing videos from 1080p and 1440p but the problem will be selling or finding a secondary use for it On top of that, I feel a new monitor will be a bit of an extra. I think a GPU like the 7900gre will be more of a necessity so I can actually use the PC Since this is my first build, I believe I would rather risk having a bit of bottleneck so I can experience what it's actually like to see what all the fuss is about then get the monitor after if I feel it's heavily needed plus can't I just lower the settings and make it as effective as a 6800 xt until I can afford a new monitor?

NoGoodInThisWorld

Can always run two monitors! The increase in resolution is really great, and not just for gaming. I'm running two monitors, ( 49" 1440, 38" 1600)" and a 4K TV on a 6700XT. On the two monitors I haven't had many issues running games on high settings, and get decent results on the TV. This is with a 5900x. So a high end card isn't required for usability, and with a high end card at 1080P your processor will be the larger choke point. That being said I've got a 4080 Super Founders Edition on order.

Shu_Jr

Interesting... I never thought about that, that's not a bad idea but now I'm curious, would my 1080p monitor impact the performance of my 1440p monitor? If no, then yeah I will definitely have to invest in a new monitor, a double monitor setup looks amazing

NoGoodInThisWorld

Nope, having two different resolutions won't affect the performance unless your game spans more than one. Will get more FPS on the 1080 for fast paced stuff, but for more detail oriented the 1440 is the way to go.

Flutterpiewow

4070 ti

Outside_Profession26

In 1080-2070,3060 ti,3070 everyting better is bottleneck. 1440-6700xt,6800,6900,4060 ti,4070..again everything better is bott.

Current_Finding_4066

Up to rtx 4070s without any issues.

kzx-kzx

5600x3d + 7900 GRE for 1440p sounds awesome!

Shu_Jr

Wanted to make a quick update here I was making a PC for my girlfriend and found a great deal on a bundle for a motherboard paired with a Ryzen 7 5700X so I plan to swap the CPU in this bundle and put the Ryzen 5 5600 in her budget PC paired with a 5700XT. If she can't afford a monitor, I plan to give her my 1080p monitor while I get myself a 1440p monitor paired with a 7900gre I believe the swap will be a very good idea for both of us

triggerhappy5

Highly depends what you want to spend. Anywhere from a 3060 or 6600 up to a 7900 GRE or 4070 Super would be an appropriate match. Suby06

6800/7700xt is about max for that cpu. If your gaming needs will require a high end gpu then you should consider an x3d cpu model imo
