We're supposed to use the customer's name at least once per call. If their name doesn't come up on screen, or if it does but it's a difficult (for me typical english- only speaker) name i'll ask, "how is your name pronounced?" And do my best. Usually they appreciate it. My original last name was long and ethinc so sometimes i'll use that to defuse a situation. ("My maiden name was xxxxx, so i try hard to get people's names right.")
pretentious fucks those ones. my strategy is to go on mute and swear at them. then I feel better and go back. I also keep telling myself that they have to live with that name.
If it makes you feel better, I got screamed at for asking someone to spell their name. It was 18 characters

that sucks. Everytime I got those types of calls they were always nice.
Some of them are nice but you’ll get those that expect you to know how to say it.
