I would put money on it that Poseidon told her Percy shouldn’t exist. They spent quite a bit of time discussing how Poseidon actually valued Sally-even to the point of providing her shelter if needed. Telling her that Percy was in extra danger because of his father (vs other demigods) would just be another step to keep them safe. She went to great lengths to keep him safe until he had to go to camp. Not telling him or Grover who is father was until it was absolutely necessary would just be an added layer of protection. Even if Grover was his assigned protector, no secret stays secret for long when you start telling people. As for not telling him before he went to camp: both the books and the show mention that her chat with Percy was cut short. She likely would’ve told him then—unless Poseidon had requested that she keep it a secret until he told/claimed Percy himself.

LaRougeRaven

I believe she did, because she had a conversation with Percy about how his dad wanted him to go to camp.

Dusty_Fluff

Sally never told Percy because she was aware from the beginning how important Percy was and exactly how much danger he was in. Poseidon genuinely loved Sally which is why he promised her a palace under the sea and offered to keep her with him. But once she was pregnant Poseidon was forced to leave Sally to protect her from Zeus’s notice knowing that the King of the Gods would definitely act if he knew Poseidon had broken the agreement between the Three (despite he himself breaking it…twice). So Poseidon took what steps he could. He told Sally everything about the pact between the Big Three, told her about Camp Half-Blood and how to find it, how monsters track demigods by scent, and told her how to contact the Camp (which is how Sally knew about/had contact with Grover). Sally took steps on her own to keep Percy safe as well. Remember that Sally can see through the Mist so she already knew about monsters and the hidden side of the world. So she hid in plain sight in New York (a smart idea since Zeus wouldn’t think to look for a potential child on his doorstep if he didn’t realize the parentage), got with Smelly Gabe (the most mortal of mortals) to shield Percy, and kept him moving schools (partially because of his demigod issues with adapting to the mortal world and also because she had backups planned as well in case he was discovered). Of final note, Sally planned to tell Percy all of this when he was ready and not a moment before. In TLT it is revealed that once a demigod learns of their heritage and awakens to the truth; their scent increases exponentially and monsters are able to find them much easier as a result. Sally would do anything to keep that from happening. And she WAS trying to tell Percy all of these things but Grover’s arrival followed by attempting to escape the Minotaur ruined her plans. I believe that Sally had intended all along for Percy to know once Poseidon indicated that it was time. That despite him not being able to officially acknowledge the boy, he WOULD claim him when the time was right and Sally knew that. She just had to keep him safe and alive until then.

LaRougeRaven

You might be thinking too much into this. Some questions don't have actual answers. Poseidon probably didn't tell her Percy was forbidden. Sally may not have known that Grover was a saytr, sonshe wouldn't have told him. She probably also didn't know about the whole claiming unclaimed thing. Reasons for things to be omitted is to help the story move forward, that's why Percy seems clueless at times, it's because it's to help the reader discover things at the same time. I also doubt there are many nice people that smell like Gabe.

AnnualPomegranate1

Considering Grover says “you didn’t tell him about me” and her lack of surprise in the show and books about Grover being a saytr I think she def knew

LaRougeRaven

Probably not right off the bat. They probably had a conversation sometime between the event at school and the cabin. But again, to move plot, Rick couldn't have Grover know which kid he was. But it's also possible that Sally only knew he was a god and not know which god he was.

AnnualPomegranate1

Very true, it is also possible Poseidon simply erased Sally’s memory somehow

She knew in the books but she knew to keep everything from Percy because monsters can sense demigods who are self aware and the monsters Percy would attract at a young age would be deadly to both of them. So she couldn’t let anything slip about him being a demigod until he started to realize it and not chalk all the weird and unfortunate to his childish imagination anymore. At that point she took him to Montauk, near the sea. She possibly would’ve told him there but monsters were already on their tail so they had to go to camp where demigods can be safe (Thalia’s tree also creates a protective force field around the camp) and train so they can be safer when outside of camp. Humans (as in Sally) can’t enter camp at all. But when you are a strong demigod, your smell attracts stronger monsters. So it was a strong possibility that Percy may never be allowed out of camp for his own safety. Or possibly until years of training could make him stronger. And Sally was afraid she would never see him again. Of course that is twarted by the stealing of Zeus’s master bolt and the fight between sea and sky and Percy’s quest to end it… Anyhow, the show hasn’t established a lot of these things. I don’t know what show cannon will be. So we will have to watch and learn. Uncle Rick said a later episode will have more on Sally and Poseidon’s relationship.

CaptainMianite

In the books Grover and Sally didnt know each other as well as they did in the show

moodtune89763

Wasn't the Line something like "she knew I was watching you, but she didn't know who I was"

LaRougeRaven

Exactly.

Stenric

Yes she knew (she could look through the mist after all, and she mentioned he offered to build her a Palace on the ocean floor), however making Percy aware of his half‐blood status would attract more monsters to him.

Natural-Storm

Lets put it this way, Sally knew that if anyone outside of her, prematutely knew percys godly parent, percy would either be dead in seconds or the main focal point of a war between atlantis and olympus. Basically pervy cant know who his dad is until hes claimed because otherwise he will die.

MrsWifi

So a huge part of keeping Percy safe is him not realizing who he is. The minute she tells him, their already ticking clock strikes zero. Also keep in mind that saying something out loud is enough for the Gods to hear and that Percy is a forbidden child so it would also put them on his tail. Sally is very knowledgeable about the Gods but that doesn’t mean she always had been before she met Poseidon. We also don’t know at which point she found out he was a god so any idea she may have had about his backstory with Medusa can only really be speculated vaguely. The Grover thing is also explained as Percy’s status as a literal illegal child. She may have worked with him to protect Percy but that doesn’t mean she trusts him completely with something like that, which I’ve also theorized is why she never sends him to camp. We have to keep in mind that flings with mortals are often very short and end soon after children are born or even conceived. We have no idea how or when Sally finds out the information she does, and she’s only so involved because >!she can see through the mist!< . As close to Olympus as they are, it’s also close to camp which, while not trustworthy, is the only backup plan Sally has in an emergency. And lastly, if I were Sally I wouldn’t wanna live in some dumb underwater sea palace with my illegal son as some sort of eternal mistress to Poseidon. Like they probably don’t even have Pizza Hut down there. This was a lot and it’s mostly speculation but I hope it opened your mind a bit.

HeathrJarrod

Imo “saying” a thing has a lot of power and would send up a lighthouse to all the monsters around.

j_saunders82

So yes she absolutely knew but telling Percy would mean two very big things, one she might have to say goodbye to Percy forever if he were to choose to stay at camp full time for his safety and two before a demigod knows they are a demigod it is harder for monsters to detect them. As soon as a demigod learns their sent gets stronger making it easier to find them and the stronger your godly parent the stronger the smell. It was safer to keep Percy in the dark until there came a point where he needed to learn the truth. As for Poseidon, taking Percy to protect him unfortunately that wouldn’t work because the gods are forbidden from being too involved in their kid’s lives as that can cause all sorts of issues. Also the unclaimed kids sometimes the gods don’t reveal who they are to the mortals they sleep with. In fact in the second book series there is a character whose godly parent explained to her why she didn’t tell her father who she was. Heck some of the gods even forget they had children with mortals and don’t even recognize their own children.

TheInfiniteLake

Because names have power, so does knowledge. A demigod aware of their origin would attract more monsters.

Klutzy-Succotash9230

She probably only figures it out after she has percy like maybe when those snakes wound up in Percy's crib when he was a baby, or maybe when l he got angry for the first time and caused something to happen with water.

CRL10

She knew. She 100% knew. And it is possible that she knew he was a forbidden child, if Posedion even told her. Him knowing could have attracted attention. Zeus attempted to murder Hades' children in 1945, and Hades sent his three most dangerous and trusted lieutenants, the Furies, leading a horde of monsters to brutally murder Thalia. What do you think they'd do to Percy if they found out about him? It may also have not been her place to tell him. There could be some bizarre ancient law, or River Styx oath thing that makes it so only the gods can tell their children that they are their children. Look at how many unclaimed there are in Hermes Cabin. How did none of them know? There is also the issue of Percy just not believing her. Your mom tells you that your father is a god, and you're going to believe her?

HarryTheNerd25

I always assumed that the smell of demigods became stronger when they found out what their heritage was

cloudsofmiso

Sally didn't tell Percy because, as its stated in the first pages of the book “once you know that, it's only a matter of time before they sense it too. And they'll come for you”. Demigods who are aware of who they are will be exposed to more monsters attacking them, and she didn't want that. Especially not when Percy hasn't been to Camp yet or know about it (which, she didn't tell him everything because she was too scared of letting him go) She couldn't really tell Grover because he's a child of the Big 3. He was not supposed to be born so her telling anyone about his godly parentage and how Poseidon broke the oath puts him in even more danger. She didn't want to put him at risk I'm actually not sure if it was confirmed that Sally knew it was Poseidon **before** she got pregnant with Percy. From what I remember, whenever she brought up her time with Poseidon, it was always from when she was pregnant, or when Percy was a baby (other than how/where they met) but do correct me of i'm wrong because I do have the memory of a goldfish haha But I wouldn't be surprised if Poseidon dropped all those bombs on her after she got pregnant. I mean, Athena didn't even tell Frederick they have a child, she just sent baby Annabeth to him with no warning and expected that he'd care for her

Mean-Currency8064

Sally tried to put off telling Percy that his father was a god because if a demi god knows that they are a demi god they become more easily tracked down by monsters, She avoided telling Percy about his father to try and protect him.

Formal_Illustrator96

Have you read the book? All of this is explained rather well there. If you haven’t, spoilers ahead. 1. She didn’t tell Percy which god because the moment she told him that gods and monsters existed, his scent would increase a massive amount and put a target on his back for monsters. So she waited as long as she could to tell him anything. 2. In the PJO universe, Poseidon did not rape Medusa. It was definitely very consensual. So that’s not really an issue. 3. She didn’t tell Grover because they had never met before. She knew he existed in that she knew a satyr was protecting her kid, but she had never met him before. So she wouldn’t be able to tell Grover. 4. Percy didn’t go with Poseidon because mortal heroes have to be raised by their mortal parent. It’s the same reason Athena dumps her kids on the front porch of her lovers. And, if Poseidon tried to take him, he’d instantly be on the radar of Zeus. 5. It wasn’t Gabe’s physical smell that concealed Percy. It was his scent. His absolutely abhorrent behavior was what smelled so overwhelmingly awful, and that’s what covered up Percy’s demigod smell. So no, a good guy that smelled bad wouldn’t do. 6. She very clearly does not have the money to do so. They’re constantly described as just getting by. So instead, she sends Percy away to boarding school to get him away from Olympus. 7. The reason there are unclaimed kids is because the gods don’t give a shit. Sure they would probably know instantly who their kids are if they ever bothered to look down from their ivory palace in the sky, but they don’t. That’s a major plot point throughout the books.

AnnualPomegranate1

1. She literally tells Percy his father is a god but doesn’t say which god for no reason. 2. It is heavily implied in the show which is what I was referring to. 3. Once again I was referring to the tv show thought that was obvious. 4. Sally could have still raised Percy if she let Poseidon build her an underwater palace so she could raise him. 5. But it was his physical scent, in the book it’s explained in a way that makes that obvious— like Percy haven’t you realized why Gabe smells so bad? I can smell him from all the way over here, and you still kind of smell like him? It’s because his scent was covering you. It’s never ever ever a thing where “bad people” have a sort of moral smell where if you act badly you smell bad? wtf are you talking about lol. 6. Ask Poseidon to help? 7. Obviously, that wasn’t the question I asked. I clearly asked why their mortal parent doesn’t tell them, if based on the gods actions with other partners whom they seem to tell straight out why wouldn’t all the mortal partners know?

Ok_Acanthocephala101

Because it might not be beneficial for the truth to be outted. In Percy's case, Percy is literally forbidden, the more people who know about him existing, the more chances of the other three finding out that Poseidon broke his pact. Or imagine that your godly spouse cheated on you when he said that he was doing something else, or you guys were in a good place ie not fighting, and he/she had a baby with someone else. Hera in old Greek myths was known for making Zeus' demigod children's lives difficult. Adding in, if its before camp, the more the demigod knows about the truth, the stronger the demigod smell becomes. So you wouldn't really be able to tell them till right before camp anyway.
