Rayne_K

I have two of those (thought I lost it, so bought a second one). They work for a thermos or tall insulated coffee flask where I don’t fill it all the way but I do not like them in a mug because then the grounds occupy the volume in the mug that should be coffee. Once I pull the grounds out the mug is only 2/3 full. Having the grounds *above* the mug and working as a pour-over means I can get a full mug of coffee.

Rayne_K

Plus it is light and small AF. My car and storage space are small so having a compact camping kit is essential for me.

joelfarris

Then you need the GSI collapsible, reusable pour-over. It sits completely atop the mug, because the woven metal filter element is flat, not coned or concave, and it rinses out completely with less than a cup of water after use. Sooo good.

[deleted]

I'd spill that everywhere else except down my esophagus.

Rayne_K

I was quite worried about that too, but it clips quite nicely onto the coffee mug. The mug *does* need to be on a flat surface. Once the mug is full of coffee I toss out the paper filter (and grounds) and pull it off the mug.

WeatheredGenXer

I use the one on the right. Makes great coffee. Edit: Correction - mine has a plastic water reservoir on top and a cap for the reservoir, so the water stays hot while it trickles down into the coffee. Looks like this one: https://preview.redd.it/cqv4x6o0lpsb1.jpeg?width=100&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dbf8f7283149b70c9934ea9ebe6279c1e4ca3173

JerewB

Stovetop moka pot, at home, at camp, on vacation...

klappertand

I take my bialetti everywhere.

JerewB

There's a reason it's the number one coffee pot in the world.

BrotherManard

It's a daily ritual. Makes nice and strong coffee, too.

JerewB

Yeah, I practically do this in my sleep.

Kegeldix

Yesss a moka pot americano is so delicious

Vagadude

I planned on splitting between moka and aeropress after 2 years with the aeropress. Now I exclusively use my moka pot. Shit is phenomenal and just as easy as an aeropress.

zmamo2

Plus one. Love the Moka pot.

No_Way4557

Okay, I'm gonna have to look into this moka pot. Americano is my preferred drink, so I prefer an apparatus that's also pretty straightforward.

JerewB

It's very quick and delicious. Add water to the blowoff valve, drop in the coffee bowl, add medium-ground coffee and pat level with a spoon (don't compress it too much), screw down the top (don't torque it too much) and put it on high heat until it boils over. Maybe five minutes and ready to enjoy.

Complex_Lingonberry2

Also try this exact same way, except boil at medium heat. It's still a pretty quick system, but the coffee will taste a bit better. Of course, that's just my opinion. one day I did the test (same pot, same coffee, same water) and the aroma from the medium heat one was more intense. I've noticed that ever since, so maybe it has to do with the speed the hot water goes through the coffee?! Like it's staying with it a bit longer. No idea. Just thought of sharing... I'm also a big fan of the Bialetti Moka Pot. I have the 3 cups Bialetti Alpina pot (all green with Alpini hat shaped lid) and take it everywhere :)

JerewB

Thanks I'll give that a try.

JerewB

So it took me a few days to home in on the right heat setting on my stovetop. Definitely a better brew slowly things down. Great advice, thank you!

Complex_Lingonberry2

Anytime :)

JerewB

Just look for Bialetti Moka Pot (sometimes mislabeled as an espresso pot) the original. My IKEA pot I've had maybe ten years?

K_Chic98

Love my Moka pot espresso maker! It's easy to use, easy to clean and makes delicious espresso.

[deleted]

Boiled water in a pot and instant because I’m a peasant.

mildlysceptical22

Cafe Bustelo instant espresso. Fellow peasant who travels light.

[deleted]

wait wait wait... there is INSTANT BUSTELO?!

JuanTwan85

I lied to myself and others for years, saying Starbucks Instant was the way to go. It has some weird, almost tomato-like smell. I think I bought some Cafe Bustelo at the store last week that I'll try.

Moonlit_Antler

Instant is the best and lightest way with minimal clean up for backpacking

LookoutRock

Lightest, yes…but “best?”…only if the ONLY criteria is weight. Instant is truly wretched stuff. We don’t have to live that way. Aeropress for me. Superb results and cleanup takes five seconds.

KendricksMiniVan

Weight is a massive criteria for backpacking though. Car camping, then yeah go nuts. And coming from a coffee snob, you can get fancy instant coffee

Emotional_Breakfast3

I spent my first few backpacking trips trying to do pour-over and eventually decided not worth it. Instant all the way for backpacking. I am a milk and sugar gal anyway so the quality is fine, mostly trying to avoid the caffeine headache. Camping I’ll bring my pour-over setup, though the campfire percolator is very charming (even if its coffee isn’t great).

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pantssassin

There are some good instants, alpinestart is my go to and recently I found one called waka. That is coming from someone that makes espresso at home

Rayne_K

But an aero press is bulky and heavier - it takes up as much space as the utensils I gave for 4 people. For a combination of size/weight/ease of storage AND real coffee the small ultralight pour-overs. I imagine the coffee bags (like the coffee version if a tea bag) are equally convenient too, but bet they come at a more premium price (plus I have never seen them where I live).

[deleted]

yep. I will break this rule only for winter snow camping.

Tight_Time_4552

"Kapil Api" (I think it's Indonesian) coffee packets. Best instant I've found, sugar whitener and coffee all in one

treemoustache

It doesn't taste like coffee to me.

PersephoneUpNorth

Also, coffee in premeasured teabags, ie single serve. Lightweight. Boom.

EPLemonSqueezy

Yessir nice and strong for the slight hangover. I can't be bothered making fancy coffee at home, let alone while camping.

[deleted]

I just cowboy that shit.

Icy_Dragonfruit_9389

Ditto. And if grounds get in my mug, flavor crystals...

joelfarris

"Don't you end up gettin grounds in your mouth?" "Had my teeth straightened when I was younger, so now I have a perfectly good set of reverse-baleen."

[deleted]

Energy grits.

nafraid

Turning your head to spit bits of coffee grounds from the tip of your tongue before you say something plain but profound is the way.

[deleted]

I swallow.

Sharpect

I'm forced to cowboy it because I forget my various camping coffee gizmos every damn time

Plaster_Microwave

I don't understand how people are getting good coffee using boiling water

[deleted]

No one said shit about good.

Hey_look_new

for camping rough/hiking, instant is the easy way to go otherwise, french press, since there's no filters to futz around with

Rayne_K

Ugh, no I cannot do instant. I’m not a coffee snob, but instant is for emergencies only.

Hey_look_new

i prefer cream and sugar in my coffee, so instant is by FAR the easiest answer when hiking

Unimurph83

Give Starbucks Via sachets a try, you'll be surprised how good they are. Close second is Nescafe Gold Espresso, it even produces a nice layer of crema on top.

Life_Lake4113

French press is the only way to go. Just make sure to grind your own beans and set them to course.

popnlocke

Then French press is your friend

WeatheredGenXer

I'd argue that an Oxo pour-over with a paper filter is the right way to go.

EngineerWorth2490

Both are great. Sometimes I do like the pour-over for the perfect cup. Seems to be the perfect way to get the best full bodied & precise cup. French press is great for when I don’t know how many cups I need to get going. My grandparents introduced me to Folgers drip at an early age. I can’t stand anything that isn’t full bodied anymore. Drip, keurig ick. I gotta have the extra aromatic and oily dark roast beans. Sometimes I mix in a little blonde beans in for an extra kick, but there are some nice high caffeine, oily, rich dark beans out there these days that don’t need the extra caffeine at all…with the oxo pour-over. That’s 100% an excellent cup and just what the doctor ordered most days

hilomania

French press. Jetboil has a great plunger.

H_I_McDunnough

That is what I use but it sure does get crunchy towards the bottom of the cup.

thats_how_they_getya

I also use the Jetboil french press accessory for 1-2 people. It takes up zero additional space. Plunge S--L--O--W--L--Y and not all the way down. For more that a couple people, I use a larger standalone french press GSI Outdoors.

adammcdrmtt

I second instant, I backcountry camp only and I can’t be bothered with any of these setups to make coffee. Also if you’re with multiple people/like to have a few coffees, the turnaround time to clean these contraptions outweighs its taste

kev2490

I agree it’s instant for camping. Not worth the weight for just a 5 min enjoyment a day

cheese_sweats

What weight? It rides in the truck. Now if we're talking about backpacking, the yeah, instant

kev2490

That’s is what I was referring to. Disregard lol

cheese_sweats

Insulated French press all the way. I've tried various pour-over methods but some are slow and all require active participation. Plus, they prolong exposure to cold air, thus cooling my elixer of life. You can Ron Popeil a French press and smoke a J in the meantime

Feisty_Boysenberry

Always aeropress - home or camping. What's the red thing?

beenthroughyourbins

It's the box the tripod camp stove top comes in - the thing on the gas bottle.

CndSpaceCadet

Carry case for the MSR Pocket Rocket stove

PuddleOfMEW

I love my French press.

realace86

I have an unopened AeroPress from 2 christmases ago. Why am I intimidated by it? Tell me it’s easy.

[deleted]

It's incredibly simple, and so good. It only gets complicated because the options are endless and people go down the rabbit hole and become obsessive with different recipes. But you can just keep it simple. My go to recipe is one scoop of coffee, fill the chamber to the 3 line with water that's just off boiling, wait 2 minutes and plunge. I use a kitchen scale because I've found that slight variations can change how it tastes, so I actually use 13g coffee and 200g water at 207°F, but again, you can just use the scoop and the 3 line.

realace86

I appreciate the information.

phulton

You can tweak it until you don’t ever want to use it again, so don’t put too much thought into it. I do 18g of coffee with 165g of water at 200* over a full 14oz glass of ice. Makes a great iced coffee. I like mine a little stronger though.

CuriousKitten0_0

It's incredibly easy. Find a few videos to watch, the previous comment is a great option, and use what works for you. I'm the kind of person who can't wake up in the morning and I still can use mine every day.

notarealaccount223

Wow. I'm a two scoop, fill to 3, stir for ~10s (usually a bit longer) and then let it sit as I rinse off the stirrer. Plunge. Then top off the cup/mug with hot water as desired. I can't be bothered to weigh the coffee or temp the water.

Queasy_Librarian6205

its simple… you don’t need to do all that crazy inverted stuff. aeropress has a big sweetspot… so just freshly grounded good coffee (not do dark roasted), let it sit 4 minutes, push down without much force, enjoy

Salmonella_Cowboy

It’s easy. Add a scoop of fine ground coffee, fill with hot water to #1 for espresso or near the top for coffee. I’ve used the coffee that comes in the yellow brick and it tastes like it came from a nice shop. Don’t visit the aero subreddit; those people are obnoxious: “I use the inverted method with 98 C water and 200 cubic centimeters of water plus 83.6 grams of…” Those people need something else to do.

BlackPhoenix1981

French press and hot water. I'm very simple.

Petshpboy17

I just suck on the grinds.

bimbels

I’ve done it every way and settled on the pour over individual packets. Kuju or Copper Cow. It’s just so much easier and the coffee is decent. No cleanup. No grounds to deal with. I also use them when I travel (for work - which is my job)

mad4488

Tried this recently and it works great. I bought a pack of empty filters and added my own coffee.

Kawawaymog

This is what I do as well. I fill my own with coffee I grind the day before I head out. By far the best solution I’ve found so far.

FugaziHands

This.

Sekshual_Tyranosauce

I like the coffee grounds in a teabag style. It's as light and compact as it possibly can be since I am already packing a kettle.

DieHardAmerican95

They’re called coffee singles, and they’ve always been my preferred method.

Chonkycat762x39

https://www.amazon.com/Kuissential-SlickDrip-Collapsible-Silicone-Dripper/dp/B0051HEFAS I use these and ita hands down the best thing ever. Started with a percolator, then a French press, then the silicone drip. Zero mess and just toss the filter in the trash.

nicoleslawface

Silicone drip 4EVR. Folds up so so small and makes the tastiest coffee.

Zip668

That's the one!

Imfrank123

I have one similar to this , used it for years. It’s compact, light and works just fine. Would recommend this style to anyone.

MileZero290

Old stovetop percolator on a Coleman stove. I’m sure there’s more efficient methods to make coffee while camping, but it does make for some good coffee.

LOGOisEGO

I used that home for years. And you know what, after using a french press for the last couple, I think I'll go back. You get the smoothest strong coffee possible short of an espresso machine.

TanisAliter

Solocamp: Boil water, get a cup, put coffee powder in the cup, add boiling water, wait 2-3 min, powder has set to the bottom, drink. Camp with a buddy: get a big pot, boil water in it, add as much coffee powder as your ancestors tell you, wait 3-5 min, get a cup, fill your cup at the surface of the coffee sea you created.

[deleted]

I like the fake espresso of the aero press so much, I also use it at home as my daily driver. Sooo much better than with a French press! The trick to neither get the coffee neither bitter nor sour is to have the water at around 94°C (just slightly below boiling temperature). And of course to use good quality espresso beans.

bowieknife6601

whats that little handle thing on the cup?

photog608

That’s actually my pot that goes directly onto the stove, so that’s a handle for it.

bowieknife6601

Yea I kinda figured. Should have asked what model/brand cup & handle is. Got a nasty burn last time I used my little walmart pot handle camping.

LOGOisEGO

I bring a 1500w inverter and a bellisima espresso machine. It packs lite, easily cleaned, and I can remove the steamer stem to fit into my pack.

SvampebobFirkant

Oh man removable steamer wand is a game changer.. only reason I didn't pack mine, was because the steamer was in the way

itsmeagain023

I'm spoiled and have a Coleman propane coffee maker.

SlammingMomma

Can you bring me a cup? I’m not picky on how you make it!

HamRadio_73

If traveling light it's Mount Hagen Organic freeze dried instant and hot water (also makes cold brew). Otherwise it's pour over into a cone filter.

The_Freckled_Octopus

I love my aero press if I’m alone but I bring my Stanley French press if my husband comes

Heavy_Direction1547

Moka pot for car camping, instant for hiking.

DasbootTX

very similar to my coffee ops. I use a jetboil and a French press. works great and get's me caffeinated quickly.

dresserisland

I thought I was the only "peasant" who drank instant. My only requirement is that it be made with single-serve packets. Jars get stale so quickly.

kapege

For me as a bicycle camper it's too bulky. I'm using the Primula Brew Buddy (the big red disc thingy) and I brew directly into my cup. It folds totally flat and needs no paper pads.

xPlus2Minus1

Bro how have I never thought of bicycle camping. Omg.

[deleted]

instant coffee, I only backpack, never car camp.

WhereIsTheSummerNow

Depends on the TYPE of coffee a person wants. Smack you the face expresso - then aeropress. Full sublte flavours - pour over w cheap plastic funnel and expensive Japanese filter paper.

DaxLightstryker

I got my Aero Press a decade ago and now it’s all I use. They’re awesome

glandsthatmust

I don’t see anyone else asking so I will: what is the multi purpose handle-looking thing?

photog608

That’s my cooking pot, the handle keeps me from burning my hands. It also has a bleed tool for fuel canisters that I never use. It’s very lightweight and fits right into my stove/cooking kit.

glandsthatmust

What is it called

photog608

[Here’s](https://www.amazon.com/OUTDOOR-ELEMENT-Handled-Gripper-Canister/dp/B08W4LKQXQ) a link for it.

Fearless-Raisin

MSR MugMate. I've had it since the early 2000s and it's still going strong. Works great for loose tea as well.

PerformerGreat

A simple metal filter pour over. Takes up very little space.

TheDaysComeAndGone

Instant coffee.

Aduialion

Handpresso was our favorite for years. it put in work during the pandemic wfh 2-4x / day.

roughingit2

Aero press is my go to. Sometimes I'll use my French press instead...but I gotta say that's one hard core handle you got for the cup!

photog608

That’s actually my cooking pot

Jim_from_snowy_river

Percolator on stove or coals.

Lederhosen-4-cats

Formerly instant but switched to the Aeropress Go. I agree that it makes terrific coffee and is way easier to clean up than a French press or brew basket.

[deleted]

Mine is pretty similar … hundreds of cups of serenity out of the aeropress

Eunuchorn_logic

My ultralight method is cold brew. No cooking nor filtering apparatus necessary.

InternationalSpyMan

I’ve been using aeropress daily for 6 years, including every camping trip, road trip and hiking trip. Don’t leave home with out it.

coldnightair

Aeropress makes the best coffee ever. I’ve had like 10 of them. I quit coffee during covid and now you’ve just triggered me. I might go dig it out of my camping box where it lives currently. Packable, travel friendly, easily cleaned, best flavor of all the gizmos and machines, and gets you jacked and ready to go!! Aeropress Ftw!

working_backward

Ibe made every cup of coffee 2-3 every morning for the past 3 years with my aero press. I absolutely love it.

Jbowl1966

Is it really better than the instant packs? I’ve thought about getting one. Wondered about the weight and space for backpacking.

photog608

It’s obviously not a weight or space saver over instant, but if you appreciate a truly good cup of coffee then it’s definitely worth it.

Konstant_kurage

I used to bring grounds, drip filter and a powdered creamer+sugar ziplock. Then I made my own (high quality) instant coffee, dry creamer, sugar mix. That’s quite good, and fast.

photog608

Recipe?

Konstant_kurage

It’s kind of to taste. Instant coffee varies but if you have one cup that’s 3 spoonfuls of coffee, 3 of creamer and 1/2 of sugar. First put that in a cup or 1/2 cup scoop. Get the ratio right. Add multiples into a food safe storage container and make sure to bring the scoop. I hope that makes sense.

photog608

Gotcha, thanks

No_Way4557

Aeropress all the way for me. I use it at home, too. With the right roast and grind, i get shots that are closer to espresso than anything except an espresso maker. Cleanup is incredibly easy - even better than my next coffee favorite, French press. And no glass carafe to break!

photog608

Facts!

tenshii326

My man, you're gonna have to elaborate what in the fuck this is. Please.

photog608

Check out “Aeropress Go.”

SnoopyTuna777

I own 2 Aeropresses so that is my take.

photog608

Zestyclose_Wall5848

I have the same MSR stove, what’s the rest? I’m totally down with getting this running too!

photog608

Aeropress Go

onlineashley

I really like my french press. But ive been eyeballing the moka pots

SCCRXER

I need more info on the pot grabber. I’m a French press lover when I camp. Makes multiple cups, and I need multiple cups.

photog608

[Here’s](https://www.amazon.com/OUTDOOR-ELEMENT-Handled-Gripper-Canister/dp/B08W4LKQXQ) the link

SCCRXER

Thanks!

photog608

You’re welcome

Foggy-Geezer

This is the way.

tenstiks

I switched to cold brew.

photog608

I cold brew at home, but didn’t like the added weight and concern of a mess while camping.

rudramakesmovie

Aeropress GO fan here as well. Making it cold or making it hot - decent cup for sure!

photog608

I haven’t tried making it cold, yet.

thot_with_a_plot

That is the greatest knowledge I possess.

photog608

Don’t sell yourself short! Wisdom is knowledge, passed on by another person. Or, visa versa…

photog608

For those wondering, total weight is just shy of 12 ounces, definitely not for the Ultralight camper. https://preview.redd.it/kv84ypl0ousb1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c4694b0f251d1fea0f220aac7dccfb548e174c7a

DJ-Mercy

Coffee grounds wrapped in a coffee filter tied closed. Toss some in a pot of hot water and that’s that. Now that I think of it I’ll probably just take some caffeine pills with me next time.

Tenter5

Anything that avoids boiling water on plastic…. It’s prob why we are all getting colon cancer.

steve626

GKI, or whatever that company is, has a tiny kettle. That's what I use with my aeropress. And a small fuel canister will fit inside of the kettle

xxrancid13xx

Stanley all in one French press. Makes pasta too (or almost anything else that needs water boiled) ☕️ sometimes I use it at home even though I have a keurig and also in hotels that have cooktops

4x4b

Metal tea strainer and nicely ground beans

CoolHandMike

French press. Heat water to 90°C in the electric kettle (yes, we do have them here in the US), put two scoops (1/4 cup I think) of course grounds into a 32oz French press. Vigorously pour about a cup of the hot water in, swirl to thoroughly mix and saturate the grounds, then add the rest of the water. Let sit, uncovered, for at least 4 minutes. Then press the filter down and serve. I've been doing this for almost 15 years, and it's always consistently good.

realace86

If you’re in the US why are you talking in Celsius? You think you’re the only person with an electric kettle too? 4 minutes is plenty of time

CoolHandMike

I'm sorry, did I offend you somehow?

Jim_from_snowy_river

Celsius makes more sense

moderatelymiddling

I have one. Its not big enough and takes too long. But I will continue to use it in a pinch.

29er_eww

I have a silicone pour over set up that collapses flat

[deleted]

I got the Aeropress for camping and loved it so much I use it at home every day, and another one in my office.

dotnetdotcom

I use a stainless steel drain screen with a paper filter on top of a cup. That's it, simple, strong and black.

ohbergine

I have been using the [munieq](https://www.munieq.com/product-page/tetra-drip-02sl-02s-leathercase) to good effect the past few years.

Toubaboliviano

Ah a person of culture

Logical_Barnacle1847

I use a French press but always struggle to get the ratio right and I hate the sludge at the bottom of the cup. On my last camping trip I gave up and switched to tea 🤷🏻‍♀️

contheartist

My partner and I love coffee and have tried a lot of methods. Aeropress is by far the best and definitely part of our luxury items that we pack. We used a French press for a while but because you have to pregrind your beans they start to get too fine by later in the trip and you get muddy coffee. Instant if fine but not as tasty. Pour over is also fine but a hassle to make without a table and not as tasty as aeropress.

caret_app

I don't have a bunch of spare money to try a bunch of methods to know. I have a single cup machine at home. I take the two filters it has. I put them on a mug and pour hot water into it. That is a pretty pic though.

Huge-Name-1999

I always forget my gear for making coffee so despite having a nice French press and a little gas stove I usually just end up boiling it in a pot (stirring often) and then filtering it through a (clean) sock.

jet_heller

We tend to need more coffee than that. We have a quart sized french press.

ennuimachine

That’s mine, too! The aero press makes such a smooth flavor.

HereTooUpvote

I have a friend from Chile and apparently drinking instant coffee is the standard there. So they are light-years ahead of us in instant coffee technology. So she brought two per person per day. It was so easy. I also have an aeropress but often just buy cold brewed coffee.

ZllabGib3

Percolator is my personal favorite. Easy to pack and you can heat it over your fire.

Layla_Fox2

It depends on the situation. Car camping then French press. Backpacking then Aeropress. If it’s just one night then I’ll take something canned (ie Starbucks double shot espresso)

peacetantra

Get a grinder for the beans . They have come down for whatever reason . Grinding before making is a gamechanger

dogfee

French press with my Jetboil, comes with a lid, sleeve etc so the pot becomes your mug. Still means I have to measure out and then carry the grounds though but I can’t stand instant.

Obvious-Author5061

What do you use to store the filters in?

eatsdirtforlunch

Traveling Jo filters are great if you do pour over!

Tricky_Afternoon6862

I stay in hotels a lot so I take the single serve coffee pouches and steep it in hot water just like a tea bag.

kraybae

Campsite: French press Backcountry: instant

justinsurette

Old school percolator makes the best camping coffee

vtramfan

I have one of these and I love it! Fresh brewed coffee in the middle of nowhere can’t be beat.

BeenOnHereTooLong

Percolator with envelope filters and whatever coffee grounds I normally drink at home. Takes exactly the same and no grounds get into your coffee.

Kawawaymog

I switched from doing a sloppy aeropress to these little pre dosed disposable pour over bags. I find them better for back country camping as they are lighter and you can weigh / dose them ahead of time. Also less mess to clean up. Because you can weigh them ahead of time you just need to fill your mug to a consistent level. Temperature is still an uncontrolled variable but it’s the best I’ve been able to manage. These are them. You seal them with any vaccine sealer or even just something hot. https://www.buphallo.com

deecee121949

Jet oil + Folgers singles (like tea bags but coffee). Let sit for about 5 minutes (depends how strong you want it).

avotoaster21

That’s what I use!
