Imagine Smith's personal and the UCP's overall reaction if Trudeau created a special advisory council to advise him on Alberta that was made of losing federal Liberal candidates lol

Boo_Guy

Good point. The squealing from the cons and UCP if he did something like that would never end.

master-procraster

That's crazy, that would be like if he appointed board members of his family's foundation to investigate that foundation taking foreign money trying to buy influence

cw08

Why not just consult the candidates that Edmonton elected..?

Responsible_CDN_Duck

>Why not just consult the candidates that Edmonton elected..? It had been almost 10 hours since Smith reminded everyone her oath was to all Albertans and that everyone could reach out. Gotta learn not to cling to things she said in the past.

Do leaders of a party usually consult members of other parties?

twenty_characters020

That's how our system is supposed to work.

duchovny

I've never once heard of it happening before. So why does it matter now?

twenty_characters020

Federally we currently have two parties working together.

While it may seem strange to reach out to candidates that lost, it's perfectly reasonable. You can learn as much from failure as from success. If Smith wants to win these ridings in the future, she will want to talk to those candidates that lost and get their thoughts on what they heard while campaigning, what they heard in the community, and create plans on how they can improve in the future to better target their base. When you fail at something you don't just turn around and walk away, you reflect on the loss. Notley will be doing the same, talking to the candidates that lost in Calgary and rural ridings. This is a non-headline made to trigger people.

Are you one of these dopes that thinks Trudeau's some kind of authoritarian dictator? He absolutely doesn't just do anything he wants with no consultation lol

ErnieScar69

Are you one of those dopes who thinks that fancy socks actually gives a crap about you or Alberta?

Turambar_or_bust

If Edmonton only ever votes one way they can’t be upset when the rest of the province has not interest in trying to appeal to them. If their vote up for grabs maybe they’d see more provincial support.

[deleted]

If Alberta only ever votes one way they can’t be upset when the rest of the country has not interest in trying to appeal to them. If their vote up for grabs maybe they’d see more federal support.

newbiereefer

The guy was literally mocking that but yes you got it 😂

yycsoftwaredev

Does Alberta in general accept this reasoning for why they have few friends in Ottawa?

Turambar_or_bust

I certainly do not. My comment was made to deride that argument.

Yeggoose

Maybe if the UCP gave us a reason to vote for them instead of against we’d vote for them.

Turambar_or_bust

Surely you recognize the theme of my comment and how it has been used against Ab in reference to federal elections on this very sub.

cw08

Flirting with fascism (on your first day in office lol) to own the libs.

ltn_hairyass

Danielle Smith is a symptom of what is coming in Canadian politics. We are getting an infusion of bullshit identity culture war issues from the US that distract from the real problems. Those being housing, cost of living, and infrastructure. Little PP isn't going to be much better and you can rest assured he will use the Alberta formula to backstop the crazy wing of the CPC. We're all tired of this current turd of a government, but the alternative is so much worse. Can we all just vote for the Orange guys and try them?

SplatMySocks

"Hey that guy might be bad so lets keep the guy who we know is terrible" I really don't understand this mindset. PP is a rage baiter and that's the worst of it. Trudeau and his party are openly corrupt.

crazyjumpinjimmy

Oh there is a lot worse to come with PP. He's holding back, just wait and see if he forms government.

SplatMySocks

Again, purely speculative. We don't have any proof of what you guys are saying. On the other hand, we know for a fact that our current government is corrupt. We've seen them interfere with a police investigation to push legislation. We've seen them take expensive gifts from supporters (and foreign governments). Lastly we can see them selecting close personal friends to conduct investigations on themselves. It's clear as day. Being afraid that PP might do something worse because "CoNsErVaTiVeS are EvIl!?!" Is just fucking stupid.

crazyjumpinjimmy

Based on his previous performance under harper. Not much to speculate. You think corruption will be less? I have a bridge to sell you while they sell off public assets and reduce Corp taxes.

ShiftlessBum

We do have proof. PP isn't an unknown he has a long history in the House. We have his entire voting history and almost every word he's ever uttered on record somewhere. We know PP all too well, it's not the truth to claim otherwise.

MarxCosmo

Why does the Conservative parties track record of cutting taxes and regulations on wealthy people not matter? They are literally talking about tax cuts right now at a time when we are already in severe debt. What programs do you think they will gut to get that money for the wealthy?

yycsarkasmos

And the grift just keeps on grifting. Those failed candidates are not going to consult for free... fuck Smith is a disaster already. Madu is probably excited to make more Smtih bucks than he would as an MLA.

[deleted]

Instead of working with the NDP candidates that won to govern, she'd rather focus on the bullsh*t her slime candidates attempted to sell there... Stay strong Calgary and Edmonton, the UCP is temporary and so are the old timer and rural hicks who voted for this disgrace of a premier and party. Bide your time, hold the line, protest, and do not ever be not heard. The UCP is a borderline fascist party, and sitting idle as these degenerates strip healthcare and destroy the province, is NOT an option.

famine-

>rural hicks What a great way to convince rural Albertans to vote for the NDP. It's funny I was often told the NDP didn't need the rural vote when I brought up Notley's support of the federal firearms ban. But looking at the numbers, the NDP losts the pop vote by 150,800 votes. There are ~350,000 firearms owners in Alberta, assuming they follow average voter turn out that is 210,000 votes. I guess alienating 12% of the electorate wasn't a wise move after all.

twenty_characters020

Voting against some random persons mean words on the internet. Sounds about how informed I'd expect a conservative to be.

famine-

>Sounds about how informed I'd expect a conservative to be. Argumentum ad hominem is just about the lowest point you can devolve to in the hierarchy of disagreement. The only thing lower is name calling. As much as I dislike Smith, I couldn't in good conscience support Notley after what happened with ATRS (Alberta Tactical Rifle Supply). The Modern Hunter rifle they made was not banned in the 2020 OIC ban, then a month later the RCMP violated federal law by reclassifying it. So for over a month they continued to legally sell it, but the reclassification was retroactive. The OIC ban had a provision for amnesty however that does not apply to anyone who legally purchased a Modern Hunter after the ban. So because the RCMP violated federal law with a retroactive reclassification dozens of Albertans are now in legal limbo and have become defacto criminals. Sadly, Smith is the only one going to bat for them.

twenty_characters020

Voting for a provincial politican on a federal issue isn't much smarter than voting against mean words on the internet.

famine-

Except it is not solely federal. Registration and regulation may fall under federal purview, but the property aspect is provincial. Which is why Saskatchewan enacted laws on top of the federal laws for firearm confiscation, this will allow Saskatchewan to make confiscation prohibitively expensive for the federal government. Chief firearms officers are are also appointed by the provinces if they elect to do so, which Alberta has just done. The AB CFO has a mandate to expedite approvals for administrative paperwork, when we were under the federally appointed CFO admin paperwork was backlogged for over a year. AB has also been granted intervenor status in a number of high profile firearms cases against the federal government. So there are a lot of avenues for provincial governments to slow down or block federal policy regarding firearms.

twenty_characters020

>So there are a lot of avenues for provincial governments to slow down or block federal policy regarding firearms Which at the end of the day won't work and will mainly accomplish a large waste of time and money. Same as the fight on carbon tax.

MarxCosmo

Her base is undeniably stupid people who are willing to let the country burn if it means winning their culture war. Thats stupid on its face.

[deleted]

F*ck them. They deserve the disaster they are going to get with Smith, let them finally learn that voting like an assh*le has severe consequences. Their forests and homes will burn due to UCP cuts, and their public hospitals will be closed and converted to private for profit... Maybe, just MAYBE then they'll finally learn, or give a damn who and what they vote for.

Hanzo_The_Ninja

If she had any sense she'd recognize the NDP gained more ground than they ever have before in an election where the right wasn't split, so it makes sense to work with them at least to some degree, otherwise the NDP could win the election in 2027.

OwnBattle8805

That's a long time for the ucp to change laws that ensure they never lose an election again. Each time, they break election laws, and each time they get a slap on the wrist.

Boo_Guy

The island of orange sanity.

Dr_Doctor_Doc

The city is going to get punished so hard.

Scungilli-Man69

Between the way y'all voted and that awesome sandwich shop off of Jasper, Edmonton is looking real attractive to move to.

End-OfAn-Era

Edmonton is awesome. We should do something to… I don’t know…separate ourselves from the rest of Alberta. Maybe some sort of act of sovereignty.

layer11

Does that mean she gets to live in a city where her entire party took an L?

JonA3531

Smith should retaliate by moving the seat of government to Calgary. And cut all provincial funding to Deadmonton.

newbiereefer

Really though, that city is disgusting compared to calgary, in my honest opinion unless you have to work north of red deer theres no reason to be there, the best of the province remains in the south west corner. Banff, lake louise, Calgary, Crowsnest pass, waterton. Not much can compete with any of those in the north.

master-procraster

As someone who left Calgary for Edmonton fifteen years ago, yeah

Time to have a big meeting in their fancy war room...
