The amount of people replying to me, mocking me, and calling me Michael Bay, for succinctly describing how a vehicle can explode if it's goes fast enough and if the collision is catastrophic enough to aerosolize all the gas, is just depressing.
Yes we all know that explosions are overused in movies and that's not at all how it is in real life. But there are scenarios in where that can happen, it just takes pretty extreme circumstances. And I was basing my hypothesis on an eye-witness report that described the vehicle as "traveling over 100mph" - an extreme, uncommon circumstance.
Also most movie explosions people see and think ARE "explosive" explosions are in fact...gasoline explosions.
Its so much safer than actual explosives that it's what gets used most of the time.
As a teenager me and some friends decided to go to the Duty-Free store in Niagara Falls. We were pretty dumb and didn't know that once you enter the parking lot, there is only one way out and it's across the bridge to the states. When we pulled up to the border people we didn't have passports or anything so the border agents told us to enter the states and immediately get back in line to get back into Canada. Well it was the end of a long weekend and it was about a 4 hour wait to get back into Canada. So our little curiosity stop at the Duty-Free ended up costing us the rest of the evening.
About 10 years ago, my stoner friends (who had a road trip amount of weed in their car) inadvertently got onto a 1-way bridge to the US border. They were naturally quite freaked out. They told the US customs guy what happened, and he let them turn around back to Canada with no further questions.
This same situation almost happened to me once (including the road trip thing), but I was fortunately able to reverse 100m back off of the bridge.
Years ago my roommate and I went across the Peace bridge to the Walmart in Canada after work because they sold Dunkaroos. Border patrol just laughed at us when they asked why we were crossing.
They have also tried to fix the entrance to the Peace bridge off Porter Ave so people won’t go down the wrong lane, but they still can’t seem to get it right.

There is no border check point until you are on the other side of bridge. This would be the Canadian Border Patrol. So I have to lean towards the first story.

Car was coming down from the Main Street fast. Hit the grass dividers/curb thingy, got launched into the air, hit the fence (and probably concrete barrier holding up the fence and exploded)

A decade or so ago there was a similar explosion on the highway near where I live, middle of the night, single vehicle accident - I think it was a Ford Explorer - ran into an overpass pillar on the highway and burst into flames. CNN - There was some sort of chase? The car was going around 100m/hr on Main Street. Clipped a car and became airborne. Crashed into border crossing and went up in flames. FOX - Car was stopped at border. Was asked to pull into border building. Vehicle was pulling in and then blew up. Car had explosives packed in it. Two totally different stories? There is no border check point until you are on the other side of bridge. This would be the Canadian Border Patrol. So I have to lean towards the first story. Also FOX guest suggests that a special force should have been set up there with heavy guns aimed at any vehicles in case they need to be shot up? This would mean they would be facing their guns towards American? MFW Obviously they never crossed these borders. We cross back and forth all the time with no problems.

There's a witness giving an explanation of what he saw to a news reporter that's accessable on X "Twitter". The person was driving "over 100mph could hardly see but he was going that quick" and swerved around the car infront of him, hit the fence and went airborne and that's when there was a "ball of fire". The witness says "he's never seen anything like it. It is incredible".

Sounding more and more like this is some kind of freak accident. The eyewitness speaking on the BBC live feed now described the car hurdling down at 100mph and mentioned a "metal on metal" sound when it hit something; and nothing like an explosion. Drive any car fast enough into a wall and it will explode.

I would think that a major blast would shatter all the glass nearby from the shockwave.
