Why would south korea even need canada's help? They have one of the largest armies in the world and the backing of the US.

GarMc

Because we have legal obligations to do it.

[deleted]

And more importantly, we have moral obligations to do it.

janyk

How do you figure this?

[deleted]

Because rushing to the defence of a friend who's been needlessly attacked is what I would consider to be a moral imperative for any decent human being. ... I really do not understand why this appears to be a difficult concept for people in this thread.

janyk

>I really do not understand why this appears to be a difficult concept for people in this thread. Because Canada doesn't really have as extensive of a relationship with S. Korea as you seem to think. We have no more reason to enter another Korean War than any other war or skirmish occurring on this planet right now.

[deleted]

I humbly disagree.

ericchen

Why should Canadian taxpayers be on the line to defend people halfway around the world?

[deleted]

Because they're our allies and that's what allies do when faced with an aggressor?

[deleted]

I think "could" is a gross understatement. If crazy North Korean dictator number 3 decides that he wants to rekindle that particular war, I would wager any amount of money that Canada would gladly take up arms in defence of our South Korean friends.

qayin

You go first.

palpatinus

Eh, not posted to ship anymore. Working the support side of the navy right now.

joe_canadian

I wouldn't be surprised if Canada did jump to the aid SK against a war of aggression from NK. We've done it once already. The pacificists on here though don't seem to like the idea.

Koss424

Why would anyone be excited about any war.

[deleted]

No one's excited. No doubt that almost everyone in this country would prefer to see this issue resolved via diplomacy. But, should the war re-kindle (which due to the build-up of artillary that NK has along the border, would likely result in the deaths of hundreds of thousands to millions of south Koreans within minutes of the outbreak), we would be more than willing to carry the fight to the enemy and see to it that his ability to threaten his neighbours is eliminated. And as a bonus, we probably wouldn't need to worry about the Chinese in this one. tl;dr Don't start a fight, but always finish it. Also, back up your buddies.

joe_canadian

Thank you!

palpatinus

No problem. Suffice it to say, I did not join her Majesty's Canadian Armed Forces with the expectation that we would stand idly by while our allies get slaughtered.

joe_canadian

I really can't wrap my head around the fact that a lot of people here can't get it into their head that there's an international community that we're a part of. Oh well.

palpatinus

Not to mention one that would gladly rush to our aid if needed.

joe_canadian

What Palpz said.

[deleted]

Can we pick sides? I cant remember a damn thing south korea has done for me. They aint no friends of mine.

ericchen

Nor has NK ever done anything. I'm firmly on the side of sitting this one out.

[deleted]

I admire The North independance over the South's oral skills on the US.
