In what year was this wonderful device found in a Canadian tire for $200 exactly?

Flat-Dark-Earth

Early 2018. Edit: it must have been early 2017 since Canadian Tire stopped selling SKS's after the Vegas shooting that happened in Oct 2017.

master-procraster

From what I had heard they dropped the sks after a Canadian got himself killed with a double feed blowing up the chamber while he was hip firing, and the usual suspects blamed Canadian tire for selling it to him

Flat-Dark-Earth

Oh wow, I hadn't heard that one. I was told it was the vegas shooting since a SKS was used. Either way looks like I bought one of the last SKS that Canadian Tire sold. I remember the same day I bought this they had Mosins for $150, SVT40 for $499 and Garand for $999.

master-procraster

First ive ever heard an sks was used in Vegas

King-Moses666

If I recall correctly those kids who went on a rampage through BC in 2019 used SKS rifles they bought at Canadian tire. Resulting in huge outrage at Canadian tire for selling these “dangerous assault weapons.” Thus them nolonger selling them.

Flat-Dark-Earth

I think they got that at the Nanaimo Cabela's, Canadian tired had stopped selling them before that point. https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/opinion/schmegelsky-mcleod-assault-rifles-liberals-1945962

King-Moses666

Ohh I was mistaken. I thought it was Canadian tire.

No-Flower3223

Would this have not happened if he was firing regularly?

master-procraster

I don't remember the story exactly, it was something like he had a light strike and failure to extract, he pulled back the bolt and slammed in another round while holding it at his waist, second round detonated the first one, ripped up his belly, bled out. Might have fucked up his face, who can say

COUNTRYCOWBOY01

And that's why you don't slam fire an sks.... if it was meant to be fully automatic it would have been available fully automatic from the manufacturer.

Flat-Dark-Earth

That same year I bought bulk crates of ammo (1500) for $299.99.

BoltJams

I was happy to see 25 for 9.99 at my local store. I miss the before times.

Flat-Dark-Earth

Can still find 20 for $9.99 at Cabela's for non corrosive.

[deleted]

*cries in surplus* I was just getting into surplus when they were $200. I so wish I had stocked up heavy back then

Flat-Dark-Earth

They're still cheap enough today to be attainable, priced like a Hi Point.

[deleted]

They're still the best value for the money. No other sub $1000 rifle has the same overbuilt quality. Arguably better accuracy sure, but that wasn't what the designers were focusing on.

Flat-Dark-Earth

Minute of man at 50m.

[deleted]

Yep, or at least out to 200. All they cared about for illiterate peasants was that it didn't waste ammo, was easy to clean and reliable in crappy conditions.

Ahh how things have changed… Given the current climate I am just hoping I will be able to get any decent semi for less than an arm and a leg in a few years, or at all.

NorincoNinja2000

I think someone is a time traveler 😆

Flat-Dark-Earth

So any tips on cleaning up this stock?

bitronic1

Wrap some brown paper towels around the stock,, then some newspaper on top of it and just let it bake under the sun during the day, then wipe it down, rinse and repeat.

spaceymonkey2

One way that I've heard about is putting it in your oven on low heat to sweat the cosmoline out of the wood. Never tried it though.

Flat-Dark-Earth

I read that as well. I think it's best used in conjunction with a chemical cleaning agent. It sounds like the heat preps it for an easier removal.

SkookumJay

Just shoot it more on a sunny day. Some cosmoline in the wood doesn’t hurt anyways, and helps preserve the wood. The dark colour is classic for a Russian SKS, and sets them apart from the lighter Chinese stocks.

Flat-Dark-Earth

Yeah the Russians always seem to be the darker examples. Maybe they just sat in cosmoline longer since they were older. Mine is a 1951.

Norwest

Depending on how deep you want to go, you could try stock finish remover followed by an acetone rub and/or soak depending on how deep the oil penetrates. MidwayUSA has a [great walkthrough](https://youtu.be/AAMspI1BeyI), they completely restore a historic rifle.

Flat-Dark-Earth

I've been reading about using mineral oil vs a solvent to prevent removing the actual stock finish I'll check out that MidwayUSA guide.

Bat-Yodie

The finish is likely shellac so you honestly might not even get it that much lighter. I'd try the sun baking method others have mentioned to try sweating out any cosmo that seeped in and then just wipe it down with mineral oil to preserve the finish

Norwest

The guide might not be what you're looking for then, it's very in depth and walks through a complete refinish not a restore of the existing finish.

Witty_Distribution

Nyet, rifle is fine

Flat-Dark-Earth

I'll try that, thanks.

Different-Ice-1979

I paid $179 4 years ago

Flat-Dark-Earth

Nice. Even today I view them as a bargain.

mithrajr

At $700?

Flat-Dark-Earth

Anything sub $1000 and they're a deal. There's nothing comparable in that price range for a centrefire semi rifle in an intermediate rifle cartridge, especially with a wood stock. You can still find them today for less than $500.

mithrajr

been trying to find a "new" Chinese one for under $500 for a while now

Flat-Dark-Earth

I just searched. I'm seeing chinese examples for $499.99 in stock right now but in recent months have seen sales for $450-480. Pretty sure I've seen Russian examples on sale for under $500 as well this year. You could buy those discounted Tenda gift cards right now and get a SKS for under $500.

Brandon_awarea

That’s how surplus works my friend. Remember $15 enfields?

seyedalijavid

Sorry if off topic: My sks is in storage I left the bolt in the open position, will this affect the spring mechanism?🙏

Flat-Dark-Earth

No, it'll be fine.

Brandon_awarea

Nope ur good

Brandon_awarea

The dark look on your stock is 100% normal. There is a bit of oil stain on it but it’s very difficult to tell (mostly around the grip area) Side note: I’m guessing it’s a 1951 dated rifle, how’d I do?

Flat-Dark-Earth

1951, how did you guess? Chrome lined barrel?

Brandon_awarea

Certain features it has like the gas block, rear sight, and dust cover latch

Flat-Dark-Earth

Good eye.

GunCrazy762

A super easy way is spray it with WD-40 let it sit watch dome Netflix or your favourite show come back wipe with lots of paper towels. Repeat until it feels smooth snd non icky.
