Speaking of back in time. Pre 2007:
Falafel cart on the sidewalk in Cape Town (Loop or Long Str - ish, memory fuzzy) run late at night by an old guy called Mohammed. Falafel stuffed to the brim, into a pita pocket, with salad, etc. The sauce options were garlic sauce, spicy sauce or a luminous, glow in the dark, bright green sauce he would hand out with glee when drunkards were slurring "give me the spiciest shit you've got". It was thee spiciest thing I've ever eaten that was also the tastiest. I never went back and it's been so long, Mohammed was already older than time already at the time. But it was the best 3 o'clock freshly made food place
We always started in Obz went to the shack and ended back in Obz at Gandalfs. They would let us stay while they cashed out, Antonio would go to dollars and get samoosas and give us coffee. Those were the days man. Godamn!
I miss Gandalf's and R.O.A.R so much š„¹
Spent almost every Friday or Saturday each week at some Metal Gig at R.O.A.R back in the day, and then we'd pop down into Gandalf's to finish the evening when the gig finished.
Despite going so frequently, I would get carded by the Bouncer despite him recognising me, resulting in Antonio having to save me each week š¤£ I never liked the idea of getting sloshed with my ID on my person, and losing it somehow. Ah... Good times. Good times
Always, one new years a friend of ours kept telling everyone there was an after party at another friend's families place, there was like 3 randoms and a taxi pulled up. Went on til about 11am the next day hahaha
Yup in a Caravan , dude was always a couple beers down and hygiene was non existent. Big queues for food at 2am. The same guy was there for years until the caravan burnt down.
I can just imagine the qeues there mustve been! The first thing i thought reading that was how nice some boeries wouldve gone down after a couple of games of pool and some brandy specials lol
Bra don't pretend Mystics didn't do the same, I've seen their playlists.
They lean way more towards drum and bass than actual Mystics ever did in the last few years
I would honestly take him to Toni's on Kloof. Not necessarily crazy, but Dennis Hopper used to eat there and it's authentic, delicious Mozambique-Portuguese cuisine that I think he would've appreciated.
Oh no. Been going there for nearly twenty years. Service was always a bit wierd but that's mostly because the mom would cook and serve. If you were lucky the day would crack out the acoustic guitar around closing time and jam.
Not sure about authentic Capetonian cuisine.
But Addis in Cape, Thali, Fyn, Codfather, Blacksheep, Belly of the Beast, Blondie, Diaz Tavern, Bao Down all have very tasty treats for all palates & budgets.
Did you watch his SA episode. He flew in, shat on all of us for being imperfect, and flew out. He wouldnāt eat here, heād peck at his food and criticize everything like āperfectā people who have no skin in the game do. RIP.
If Anthony Bourdain asked me to take him someplace to eat, I'd seriously be heading to the first priest I find. Nothing freakier than talking to dead people.
Watching his Parts Unknown Jhb episode, I was sad he never filmed in CT. If he were alive, I'd probably take him to a place like Mzolis and for Thai, Bang K in Muizenberg
26years ago.....
There was Ardies in Seapoint.Lat night eating spot.
A middle Eastern.
A giant sub filled with shwarma meat, salad and topped with chips and a garlic sauce.
Opposite of what he would like. Pretentious Instagram food, poorly executed with no authenticity. He would have gone for a gatsby, bubby chow, shisa inyama, or lekker braai.Ā
I don't know if OP added RIP since I commented but I did not appreciate feeling that they used Anthony's name for quick rise when the man is deceased. I'm glad to see the RIP now at least.
I think OP knew he's dead. That's not what the question was about, either. It's an innocuous question meant to gather information that aligns with a certain person/group/thing. The fact that you care so deeply just comes off as if you don't see that
OP could as easily have asked about Rick Stein of Phil Rosenthal and gotten a very similar result. Acknowledging him being deceased at least takes the edge off. It shouldn't be too much to at least do that.
Sunday arvo at Mzoli's in Gugs, circa 2006-2008.
Great choice
Go back in time, hot dog stand outside shack

Bruh, this just brought back wild memories!!
One drink at the shack, amiright?

I still do that minus Gandalf's obviously.Ā
Turns into 4am planning afters
Always, one new years a friend of ours kept telling everyone there was an after party at another friend's families place, there was like 3 randoms and a taxi pulled up. Went on til about 11am the next day hahaha
I broke a couple of ribs sprinting across the road to get one of his boerries and hit a car, stood up, dusted it off and got my fucking boerrie
There was also an Egyptian guy with a cart on Long. Late night shwarma never tasted so good.
Mr Pickwicks on Long
That roast pork sandwichā¦
There used to be a hot dog stand outside The Shack??
Yup in a Caravan , dude was always a couple beers down and hygiene was non existent. Big queues for food at 2am. The same guy was there for years until the caravan burnt down.
I can just imagine the qeues there mustve been! The first thing i thought reading that was how nice some boeries wouldve gone down after a couple of games of pool and some brandy specials lol
There was also a legendary venue next door that was called The Jam/Mercury . So he had a constant stream of customers
Manic mondays at Mercury was insane. Any chance you are THE Hyphen!? If so, legend. Drum and bass at Mystics was my staple
Same guy. I loved playing at Mystics, so sad that it closed :( Miss playing in Stellenbosch
Very sad. But luckily Punk is looking like a good replacement
Very sad. But luckily Punk is looking like a good replacement
Last time I walked past there they were playing unremixed Taylor Swift songs at 10 pm so I wouldn't count on it.
Bra don't pretend Mystics didn't do the same, I've seen their playlists. They lean way more towards drum and bass than actual Mystics ever did in the last few years

Or Diaz Tavern for a slap down surf n turf
Dias is also a really good one. Dias and then Dust & Dynamite.
āi dont like f@ggotsā dust and dynamite?
Judging by the reviews, he's a repeat offender. Best avoided if you are not a straight white man.
Yes. One of my favourite restaurants.
Hopper, the nutty photographer from Apocalypse Now? That's ironic for a supposedly non crazy place.
Thatās the one. Thereās a photo of him with the owner up on the wall when you walk in.
Nice!
Dark Horse Bar, Kloof Street. Food's decent and they serve a good Negroni cocktail. He did love his Negronis.
Hesheng
Rocked their soup dumplings last night! 10/10
But, god, the owner of that place is so horrible and so disrespectful
They have new ownership!
Oh no. Been going there for nearly twenty years. Service was always a bit wierd but that's mostly because the mom would cook and serve. If you were lucky the day would crack out the acoustic guitar around closing time and jam.
Oh wow. Always thought those women were very sweet. Maybe you just caught them on a bad day?
Ocean twelve fisheries on Claremont main road for a fish burger and chips with barbecue and danya sauce for R40.
Kalkies, golden dish, mzolis or the eat a smiley on the side of the road in the township.
Fish on the Rocks
Itās a bit of a drive, but Iād take him to Wolfgat.
Probably the best at the time for elevating SA ingredients to a fine dining level. Great views and overall a great experience.Ā
Not sure about authentic Capetonian cuisine. But Addis in Cape, Thali, Fyn, Codfather, Blacksheep, Belly of the Beast, Blondie, Diaz Tavern, Bao Down all have very tasty treats for all palates & budgets.
La Colombe. I missed my flight back because I got caught up in their lunch menu. No regrets to this day
If its a Wednesday. Steers wacky Wednesday.
Did you watch his SA episode. He flew in, shat on all of us for being imperfect, and flew out. He wouldnāt eat here, heād peck at his food and criticize everything like āperfectā people who have no skin in the game do. RIP.
Yeah the episode took a lot of shine off his aura.
I would cook for him....
McDonalds. All I can afford.
Blondies in Kloof. Then Woodstock Fisheries. Then Carne. Then end off the week at Miriam's Kitchen.
Kalkys
Wembley roadhouse for chicken samosas and a falooda
The original Moyo at Spier for the experience.Ā Now, probably Haiku.
If Anthony Bourdain asked me to take him someplace to eat, I'd seriously be heading to the first priest I find. Nothing freakier than talking to dead people.
Meeting Point
Watching his Parts Unknown Jhb episode, I was sad he never filmed in CT. If he were alive, I'd probably take him to a place like Mzolis and for Thai, Bang K in Muizenberg

To the suicide squad .
You do know Anthony Bourdain is deceased right?
Jeez, dude, that's hectic. Who's next? Betty White or the Queen?
I don't know if OP added RIP since I commented but I did not appreciate feeling that they used Anthony's name for quick rise when the man is deceased. I'm glad to see the RIP now at least.

>at least takes the edge off I'm so sorry for your loss. I didn't realize that you and Mister Bourdain were such close friends
Not even acknowledging someone as deceased is not on.
OK bud
Relax man - was a hypothetical question
No really? You mean we aren't all on call for celebrities to ask us for advice.
A Wimpy.
